Evaluate the space Look at the lot and decide what will go where, such as where to place the party space, where to create a quiet hideaway and where to locate a pool house or outdoor shower. A large, flat yard can be divided into a series of patios that serve different purposes. Yards that are built on a hill or a slope can still be utilized

Gardening during a drought

During the early and oftentimes rain-drenched days of spring, it can seem like there may never be a time when plants will struggle to get their share of water. But drought can affect any area, and arid climates in particular. Ensuring gardens can survive drought takes patience and forethought. Drought can be particularly troubling for avid gardeners because it can wreak havoc on lawns and gardens. In addition to causing changes in the physical appearance, including wilted, dried out leaves and stalks, drought can weaken the integrity of plants. This makes plants more susceptible to disease and attacks from plant-preying insects, according to Better Homes & Gardens. In addition, it can take years for plants to recover from drought. So what can gardeners do? While they may not be able to prevent damage to plants from drought, gardeners are not helpless. • Water well infrequently. Get plants used to a thorough watering every week or every other week. This will help develop strong, deep roots rather than shallow ones that will need frequent watering to thrive.

Easy food and drink access Traipsing in and out of the house for refreshments can become tiresome when entertaining outside. In such situations, people also can track dirt inside of the home or leave a trail of pool water in their wake. Outdoor kitchens allow easy access to food and drink that makes outdoor entertaining much easier. The experts at Angie’s List suggest outdoor kitchens be built close to the house to make it easier to run electricity and plumbing to the outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens should include a sink, small refrigerator, built-in grill, and bar area. Creature comforts Homeowners should think about

Fire it up Many homeowners enjoy having fire elements in their yards. Lanterns and candles may create a romantic feel, but a fire pit or outdoor fireplace may help extend use of the outdoor entertaining area beyond summer. Entertaining outdoors is made that much more enticing with a dream outdoor living space full of amenities.

• Choose drought-tolerant plants. Homeowners can work with garden centers and landscape professionals to create gardens that are full of water-wise plants and flowers. Some examples of plants that can survive with minimal water include the blanket flower, Spanish lavender, euphorbia rigida, and kangaroo paw. • Apply a layer of mulch. Mulch can protect delicate plants and the rest of the landscape by reducing the evaporation of soil moisture. Mulch will keep soil cool and moist. • Skip the fertilizer. Since fertilizers encourage plant growth, itÕs best to skip them during drought, Succulents are good drought-tolerant plants as growing plants require extra to include in landscape designs. water. • Invest in rain barrels. the things that make the inside of their homes so comfortable and then replicate that outside. Sofas and loveseats covered in fabric suited for outdoors and plenty of pillows can make for great lounging. Lighting that can be adjusted for day or night, or even to set the mood, is another consideration. Shade structures, like a trellis or retractable awning, will keep the area comfortable and can also define outdoor “rooms” and establish privacy.

Upon the arrival of warm weather, many individuals prefer to spend their free time outside, relishing the fresh air and sunshine and evenings spent under the stars. But cracked patios and makeshift chairs and tables may not establish the desired ambiance. An outdoor entertaining area that offers the same amenities found inside a home can make outdoor retreats both comfortable and functional. Creative planning can help homeowners design dream areas perfect for hosting friends or family.

Five tips for creating a Zen garden Would you like to create a relaxing, harmonious outdoor space inspired by the famed Japanese gardens? Here are five tips that will help you turn your backyard into a pleasant Zen oasis. 1.Don’t overcrowd the space. When it comes to designing a Zen garden, always think in terms of simplicity and sobriety. This means you should avoid including too many showy decor elements, which would create a cluttered effect. If you want the space to feel pure and minimal, keep accessories (lanterns, statues, fountains) to a minimum — two or three is plenty. 2.Choose organic materials. Stone tiles, sand pathways peppered with pebbles, a wooden bridge — organic materials are key in a Japaneseinspired garden. Any furniture you’d like to incorporate (a chair for

meditation, for example) should be plain, simple and high quality. 3.Incorporate aquatic elements. Water, which symbolizes purity and relaxation, is a key element to showcase in your Zen garden. To do so, you could set up a calming fountain or even a small pond. 4.Choose inspiring plants. Select trees, shrubs and flowers that inspire serenity. Japanese maple, alpine pine, boxwood and bamboo are just a few varieties that are ideal for creating a peaceful haven. 5.Say yes to asymmetry. Avoid the straight, regular lines — such as a pathway bordered by parapets — often associated with Western gardens. In a Zen space, asymmetry and irregularity should be highlighted in celebration of the unpredictable randomness of nature.

embellish your yard with a pond Adding a pond to your property is an excellent way to embellish your outdoor space and give it personality. To incorporate a pond that harmonizes with the rest of your landscaping, keep these tips in mind. LocATion Determine the ideal spot for your pond. First of all, you’ll need to consider sunlight, because your water feature might house various living species (plants, fish, frogs, etc.) with different needs. Make sure that your pond will receive

enough sunlight for flora and fauna to thrive. Furthermore, avoid placing your pond next to a tree, because its roots may eventually damage it. Size After finding the perfect spot for your water feature, you’ll need to determine its size and shape. To choose the appropriate size, consider how big your yard is. if it’s relatively small, a giant pond would only make it feel more cramped. The opposite is also true: a tiny pond might go unnoticed in a sprawling yard.

Remember that your pond should complement your yard and that everything is a matter of balance. Preformed models (made of fibreglass, resin or polyester, for example) in various sizes and shapes are available on the market; you’re sure to find one that perfectly matches your yard. FiniShing Touch once you’ve set up your pond, you’ll be able to highlight it with plants, a sculpture, solar-powered lanterns, a rustic bench, or any other accessories you’d like.
