3 Home Projects That Offer a T
Great Return On Investment
he warmer months present an excellent opportunity to get outdoors and spruce up your home’s exterior. But if you have limited time and resources, it’s important to prioritize the focus of your efforts.
For guidance, consider Remodeling Magazine’s 2018 Cost vs. Value Report, which shows that not all remodeling projects are equal. Here are three spring renovation ideas that will give your property not only a facelift, but offer a great return on investment to boot. Garage Door National data from the 2018 Cost vs. Value Report shows that the project that delivers the highest return on investment is a new upscale garage door. This is a good choice for those looking for better noise control, greater security, curb appeal and convenience.
Manufactured Stone Veneer In the number two slot for sound renovation investments, according to the same report, is manufactured stone veneer, which is a great way to add visual interest to your home exterior (or an interior room, for that matter).
Be sure to select products that mimic the texture and color of natural stone, such as the choices from ProVia, which are molded and cast to look like stone harvested from various U.S. geographic regions and are offered in a variety of style and color palettes. Entry Door Replacement Your home’s entry door is one of the first things prospective home buyers will notice, so it’s no surprise that upgrading yours could be a wise investment. The Cost vs. Value report named a new steel door as the third highest cost recouped. However, steel or fiberglass are both good choices for materials when it comes to functionality, durability, energy efficiency, security and versatility in style. Installing a fireplace or woodstove in your home is much more than just adding another source of heat; it also adds warmth to the décor. Creating a cozy atmosphere is easy with one of the many different types of heating units available on the market. Here are some tips to help you to figure which kind will best suit your needs. Wood stoves There’s nothing more enjoyable than a crackling fire. Today’s slow burning stoves are extremely efficient and emit far fewer particles to pollute the atmosphere than the previous generation of models. However, the fact remains that some towns are now banning the use of wood burning stoves and fireplaces, so be sure to check with your municipality before buying and installing either one.

Pellet heating This type of heating uses compacted sawdust or other biomass materials that are less polluting than ordinary wood. Like wood stoves, pellet stoves produce plenty of heat, but
they do require some maintenance. Gas fireplaces Whether they use natural gas or propane, these devices are affordable as well as attractive and efficient. They require very little maintenance and, when equipped with batteries, can continue working even during a power failure. What’s more, heat production is easy to control. Ethanol fireplaces These units beautify the home, are affordable, and
the visual effect of the flames is realistic. However, the room where the device is installed has to be ventilated, as they do emit carbon dioxide. They are not an efficient source of heat, either. Electric units They are eco-friendly and extremely easy to install; just plug them into a regular electrical outlet. However, while an electric fireplace is ideal for creating atmosphere, it emits very little heat.

Major Home Renovations That Are Worth the Effort B
uilding a new home? Overhauling an existing one? Here are three renovation ideas that will add beauty and value.
Expand Your Living Space
Jim Kruger / Steve Herder Landmark Photography / Herder Photography
Don’t let that basement sit unfinished and unused. Substantially expand your home’s livable areas by turning your attention to the bottom floor. Finishing a basement is an involved project, potentially requiring electrical and plumbing work, insulation, drywall and more -- but the end result is worth the effort and expense. What’s more, some of the less technical aspects of this renovation could even be DIY-ed. Before getting started, consider what type of space would most benefit your household long-term. You may even be able to recoup some cost of the investment. For example, turning your basement into an athome fitness center means ditching the costly gym membership. Want to reduce time and money on your commute? Your basement may just make an ideal home office. Add a Focal Point Is your interior design in need of a little something? The right eyecatching elements can make a room pop while adding vitality to your living spaces. A fireplace, for example, adds ambiance and comfort while also creating a natural gathering space. What’s more, new models pair the charm of a traditional open-front fireplace with the design flexibility of gas models. The Phoenix TrueView from Heat & Glo offers the convenience of gas without the
glass, giving homeowners an unobscured view of the flames against the traditional brick or fade-resistant reflective black glass liner. An optional Bluetooth speaker system allows one to hear the fire as well as see it -- making it a focal point for the ears as well as the eyes. Boost the Backyard
If you find that your household spends very little time in the backyard, figure out why. Is there a lack of shade? Are there not enough places to sit? Take a poll so you can diagnose the problem and take steps to correct it. Consider also how to make this space usable for a larger portion of the year, such as adding a
fire pit or an enclosed, heated patio. Lastly, consider aesthetics. A bit of landscaping can make your backyard as visually appealing as your home’s interiors. This season, consider the renovations that will go furthest to boost your home’s livability, beauty and value.(StatePoint)

Overlooked Items For Your Family’s Emergency Supply Kit
B
uilding a new home? Overhauling an existing one? Here are three renovation ideas that will add beauty and value.
Don’t let that basement sit unfinIf you prepped an emergency supply kit for your family, you most likely have the basics covered: batteries, first aid and non-perishable foods. Here are five often overlooked items that can help keep your family safe, comfortable and informed should the unexpected occur. • Water filter. Tap water is not always safe to drink in emergency situations. While you should have a store of bottled water on hand, you can be extra safe with a highquality water filter. Consider a portable model, so that if you have to relocate, you can have access to clean water on-the-go. • Reliable Technology. In an emergency, you may require technology that doesn’t need information from cell towers and doesn’t have to be recharged constantly, such as Casio’s PROTREK PRG600Y-1, which features an altimeter, compass and barometer (great for staying aware of changes in temperature or air pressure). It also delivers this information hands-free, which can be useful any time, but extra valuable in an emergency. Additionally, it features Casio’s Tough Solar Power, allowing the watch to be charged in low or fluorescent light. After a fullcharge and without further exposure to light, the timepiece has a battery life of approximately seven months, and a special power save feature conserves energy by enabling the timepiece to power
Africa Studio/stock.Adobe.com down when not exposed to light. • Back-up Generator. If the power goes out, a generator can keep you up and running, helping you protect against extreme weather conditions and keeping food from spoiling. Just be sure to operate your generator properly, following all the manufacturer’s safety measures. Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space.
• Something to do. The truth is, emergency situations often yield a lot of downtime. Don’t be caught with nothing to do. Find forms of entertainment that can be enjoyed without power, such as books, board games, musical instruments, pen and paper. • Medication. Beyond first aid, your family likely has other medical considerations for which to prepare. Always have a several days
supply of prescription medication for each member of the household. For those who wear glasses, keeping an extra pair handy will keep you seeing straight should your main pair break in an emergency. To be truly prepared for any emergency, be sure your prep kit goes beyond the standard checklist to include these often-overlooked items. (StatePoint)

Built in a factory and delivered to home sites, this efficient process translates into lower production costs that are passed on to the consumer. The good news is while manufactured homes cost less than sitebuilt homes they are just as high quality. The average new manufactured home costs around $70,600. The cost for a smaller new singlesection home can be as low as $20,000. In 2016, manufactured homes accounted for 80 percent of all new homes sold under $150,000. Unfortunately, when many people think of manufactured housing, the old stereotype of a run-down trailer park enters their minds. However, most of the more than 37,000 manufactured housing communities in the U.S. are a far cry from that negative image, boasting amenities like community centers, organized activities and children’s play areas. Yesterday’s Factories Could Be Tomorrow’s Offices and Homes
T
o counter generic new construction projects, many cities and towns are converting older structures into vibrant tech offices, loft-style residences and even art institutions -- a process known as “adaptive reuse.”
As midcentury facilities designed for oncehumming industries are finding new leases on life, cities are retaining their architectural character. What’s more, adaptive reuse can be an eco-friendly option. By avoiding demolition of existing structures, architects reduce the amount of waste generated by the project. In North Adams, Massachusetts, a former textile printing plant of more than 25 buildings has become a cultural center and home of the
