As students and families plan for their Fourth of July weekend activities, the city of Oxford prepares in its own way to reassure the safety of its citizens. Deputy Chief James Owens of the Oxford Police Department said the Fourth of July is one of the biggest holidays, but just like any other holiday the department focuses on what needs to be accomplished. “We do kind of change gears,” Owens said. “Patrols will be a little bit more vigilant of motorists.” Owens said this year the department will have a team of officers coming out and running driver safety checkpoints throughout Oxford to ensure safety. He said they’ll mainly be looking for those who are being distracted while driving, fatigued and those who are in- See SAFETY, PAGE 6
Pak Mail Center to be housed in Crosby Hall BY LACEY RUSSELL dmeditor@gmail.com
Beginning July 14, the first floor of Crosby Hall will house a new 2,200-square-foot Pak Mail center. The new facility will have up to 5,000 mailboxes and a package center to serve students, faculty and retirees within the University of Mississippi community. UM Housing Director Lionel Maten says the new mailing center will offer more services than the campus’ U.S. Postal Service branch, which is scheduled to close permanently Aug. 1 as a result of the $50 million renovations to the Ole Miss Student Union. “I believe that the service will provide many of the functions that are offered through our university post office as well as additional services,” Maten said. “Students will be able to have money wired to them. Students who are studying abroad will be able to have pictures taken for passports.”
Opinion:
Pak Mail customers with a mailbox will have access to the mailing center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For others, the center will be staffed 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays. “We were trying to make sure that we were providing the (mailing) service to the students who would be residing in our facilities,” Maten said. “Otherwise, we would have put a lot of pressure on our downtown postal service. We realized this partnership had the potential to really serve the entire community.” The Pak Mail center will also offer students the option of moving and storing items from their residence hall rooms before arrival in the fall and while they are absent for the summer. “My experience has been, students really like conveSee PAK MAIL, PAGE 6

The fate of my uterus BY RACHEL WILSON rwilson1@go.olemiss.edu
Growing up, I believed that religious freedom meant that I was lucky enough to live in a country that allowed people to be who they wanted, believe what they want and practice how they want. Recently, however, the term religious freedom is being used as a basis of discrimination across our country. In the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby trial, I wouldn’t say the Supreme Court ruling is a huge win in religious freedom. Not being able to receive the proper health care you deserve because of someone else’s views is not freedom. I believe that I have the freedom to make my own decisions in the terms of religion, but I don’t see how I, or anyone else for that matter, can force others to comply with my own beliefs. The belief in your opinions should not control

the fate of others. If you don’t believe in birth control, don’t use it. If you don’t believe in abortion, you don’t have to get one! Don’t let your views get in the way of the health of others. The great thing about opinions is they are just that - there is no right or wrong answer. It’s just what you believe to be true for yourself. Companies nationwide are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of religion when hiring their employees, yet can now harm them because they don’t share their same beliefs. The healthcare of a woman should be decided between her and her doctor, not by the owners of a multi-billion dollar corporation. The main argument by many is that there are still other forms of birth control covered, but they aren’t looking at the bigger picture. With this Supreme Court ruling, anything is possible. What’s next? Denying blood transfusions or coverage of

same-sex couples in states where same-sex marriage is legalized, all in the name of religious beliefs? Most importantly, I am tired of the fate of my uterus being determined by men. Never in their lifetimes will they be faced with the need to take an emergency contraceptive or the decision to implant an intrauterine device. Yet, they controlled my right to choose. It’s easy not to understand a woman’s rights when you’re not a woman. I’m sure it’s easier to be pro-life when you’re not faced with carrying a child for nine months. It’s easy to think you’re killing a child with an emergency contraceptive if you don’t know your female anatomy and realize it’s just preventing conception, not destroying a life already formed. It’s easy not to understand being denied proper health care when your Viagra will still be covered by companies

like Hobby Lobby, and you’ll be able to treat your erectile dysfunction so you can inseminate a woman who may or may not be receiving the proper birth control coverage in her health plan. So while SCOTUS ruled that certain heath care plans discriminated against religious freedom, the discrimination against women is apparently no discrimination at all. I believe we are entitled to practice religion freely without repercussion. I believe we are entitled to act in cohesion with our opinions and beliefs. I believe that women are entitled to decide what’s best for them and their own reproductive organs. But as the ruling stands, I believe 5 Supreme Court Justices denied us these rights. Reasons why I’m single sswigley@go.olemiss.edu
As I am growing into my adulthood and being sucked into all of the engagements on my Facebook news feed, I cannot help but ask myself, Summer, why are you single? My first thoughts were the external reasons. Summer, you‚Äôre not pretty enough. Summer, you‚Äôre not thin enough. Summer, you don’t dress nice enough. I discovered that it isn’t the external reasons the more that I thought. It’s the internal reasons. So, you might ask, Summer, exactly why are you single? Well‚ 1. I’m single because I do not know God’s love. I’m not ashamed to say that
because it is true and I am guilty. I’ve strayed away from my relationship with Him. I focus on earthly pleasures and not on serving Him and His divine love. God is love. 1 John 4:8 teaches us this. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. The question I have to ask myself is, How can I love someone else when I do not truly know love? To know, in this context, isn’t to recognize something. It’s to understand. It’s to believe. It’s to practice. It’s to fulfill. I cannot honestly say that I know God’s love, but I am working, I’m praying and I am begging to know His love because I am without a doubt empty without it. Until I know God’s love, I won’t know how to truly love someone else.
I struggle with self-discovery every day. I’m aware that I won’t always love the person I see in the mirror and that I will be ashamed of some of the decisions that I make. I desire to know‚ actually know‚ who I am. I’d like to think I serve an amazing God, I am surrounded by beautiful family and friends that will aid in my self-discovery. When I truly know myself, I will be able to truly know someone else and love for him in a way I would have never before. When I truly know myself, I will know the true value of another human being. When I truly know myself, I will be able to love and be loved.
2. I’m single because I don’t know who I truly am.

3. I’m single because I am too busy and don’t always have time for myself
can be physically and emotionally exhausting, especially at the beginning stages when connecting and figuring out the kinks are imperative before the establishment of an emotionally involved relationship. I am way too involved with academics, organizations and extracurricular activities. I have no idea how I could have a successful relationship when I cannot even make time for myself. I made a promise to myself that I wanted to be the best version of myself for my man. I want to be able to give him all that I can, including my time. No one deserves to be in a commitment when those promises aren’t fulfilled or at least attempted.

Independence Day in Oxford: a festivities guide BY GRACE LOVVORN eglovvor@go.olemiss.edu
Oxford will be jam-packed this weekend for the Fourth of July. While most towns lose a bulk of their population for the Fourth, Oxford is expected to see plenty of visitors. Since the town will remain its vibrant and happening self, students, residents and visitors alike will find nonstop action throughout Oxford and the Ole Miss campus. Here is a breakdown of this weekend’s schedule. Needless to say, there will be activities for absolutely everyone. THURSDAY Firecracker Bash The fun begins a day early with the Firecracker Bash. The event is hosted by Leap Frog, a tutoring and mentoring program benefitting students in Oxford and Lafayette County. Firecracker Bash will be held at the Lyric from 7-10 pm. For entertainment, Memphis, Tenn.-based “The Bouffants” will be covering a range of classic hits. Other attractions include door prizes, a silent auction and a Mr. and Miss America contest. The event calls for casual dress, and tickets can be purchased for $25. FRIDAY Stars and Stripes on the Square 5K and Fun Run The Fourth of July will begin bright and early for the ninth annual Stars and Stripes on the Square 5K and Fun Run. The 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m., with race-day registration beginning beforehand at 6:00 a.m. The 5K will be followed by the familyfriendly Fun Run at approximately 8:30 a.m. The race is sponsored by the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, and all proceeds will benefit the animals they shelter. 4th of July Children’s Parade The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 4th of July Children’s Parade. The traditional parade will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the lineup beginning at 8:30 a.m. beside Something Southern on East Jackson Avenue. Parade entries will be judged and prizes will be awarded for “Most Patriotic” and “Most Unique.” Children on bicycles, pets and antique cars are welcome. The parade will include a “Dress Your Pet” section, which will also be judged with awards given. Participants and spectators alike are encouraged to show off their patriotic spirit with flags, banners and streamers. Don’t forget your red, white and blue! Slice of Americana Pizza Competition

Oxford-based PMQ Pizza Magazine is hosting the “Slice of Americana Pizza Competition” at the Powerhouse. This is no ordinary pizza competition. The winner will receive a free trip to Italy and a spot on the United States Pizza Team to participate in the World Pizza Championships in 2015. Up to 20 pizza makers, or pizzaiolos, will be coming to Oxford from all over the nation to participate in this unique event. The competition’s name comes from Oxford’s central location in the Americana
Music Triangle, which consists of Nashville, New Orleans, Memphis and the area in between these cities. The Americana theme will hold strong at the Powerhouse on Friday, with children’s activities and live music. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 for ages 13 and above and $5 for children ages 5-12. Children four and under will be admitted for free. A ticket purchase includes a ballot, refreshments and last but not least, free pizza. The pizza competition begins at 10:30 a.m. and is ex-
pected to last until 3:30 p.m. Fun in the Grove Starting at 4 p.m., the Grove will be providing nonstop fun to people of all ages. A number of activities will be available, including face painting, pony and train rides, a petting zoo and many more. At 6 p.m., the Independence Day Ceremony will be conducted to honor our local men and women in service. Live music will then be performed from 6:30 p.m. until nightfall. Once nightfall makes way, the fun will continue at Swayze Field for fireworks.
Fireworks over Swayze Field The evening will go out with a bang at 9 p.m. with a fireworks show over OxfordUniversity Stadium at Swayze Field. The stadium gates open at 7:30 p.m., with access to premium stadium seats costing $2 each. Coolers are not allowed, but refreshments will be available. The fireworks will be a majestic way to conclude this lively Independence Day.

Fritz Valerio, a senior math major, said he believes that the Fourth of July is a big weekend for both students and citizens alike. He said other than having fun, safety should be everyones number one priority for this weekend. “Safety is important everywhere on July fourth because of the hazards of using fireworks and the citizens feel liberated to drink for this holiday,” Valerio said. “Those two don’t mix well if not handled with decent care.” Valerio said the police department and fire department will definitely be needed this weekend and he’s glad they are going to be ready

nience,” Maten said. “I think this Pak Mail Store will provide that convenience and readily available services that I think students are in need of throughout the year.” Maten said the area for the new facility is almost complete and close to 400 mailboxes have already arrived. He hopes by the end of July all of the mailboxes will be installed and fully functional. Designated parking spaces will also be created and available for Ole Miss Pak Mail customers who choose to drive to the center. This summer, the university began a four-year, $50 million renovation and expansion of its Student Union increasing its size from 97,000 square feet to about 157,000 square feet. The post office there will shut down permanently Aug. 1. Maten said the new mailboxes are available on a first come, first served basis. He encourages students, faculty, staff and retirees who would like to continue receiving their mail on campus to sign up for a Pak Mail box as soon as possible. A look ahead at the running back position for Ole Miss BY CODY THOMASON csthoma1@go.olemiss.edu
Heading into next season, one of the hottest position battles on the Ole Miss football team will be the running back position. The team returns it’s top two leading rushers and has plenty of younger backs that will compete as well. The likely top two in the Rebels rushing attack next season will be I’Tavius Mathers and Jaylen Walton. Mathers led the Rebels in rushing with 563 yards on just 95 carries, and scored three touchdowns. Walton, a speedy outside runner, rushed for 523 yards on 113 carries and scored six touchdowns. In addition to his efforts on the ground, Walton also caught 29 passes for 322 yards and two more scores, and was also the Rebels’ primary kick returner. Also looking to be in the mix is sophomore Mark Dodson, redshirt freshmen Jordan Wilkins and Eugene Brazley.
Dodson saw time in a backup role last year, and carried the ball 22 for 124 yards and a touchdown, in addition to catching a 30-yard touchdown as well. Dodson has solid size at around 5-feet-10-inches, 200 pounds, and showed great potential in limited chances last year and should get a significantly larger workload this coming season. Brazley is a small back at 5-feet-9-inches, 183 pounds, but he showed good burst and quickness in the spring, and will look to get carries for the Rebels as an elusive, change-of-pace back. Wilkins, on the other hand, has showed potential to be a bruising back, as he came to Ole Miss at 6-feet-1-inches 209 pounds and added even more weight during his redshirt season. The Rebels will also have a newcomer fighting for carries in the backfield next semester. tribute. Judd has good size at 5-feet-11-inches, 215 pounds, but also has the quickness and speed to be an all-purpose back. The biggest problem with Ole Miss’ rushing attack last year was the lack of a power back. The Rebels did not have a larger running back that they could hand the ball to on short yardage situations. As a result, the Rebels would go to Mathers or Walton for those situations, even though neither one is listed as over
200 pounds, or would turn to quarterbacks Bo Wallace and Barry Brunetti to carry the ball. Ole Miss needs a back that can come in and push for the first down or touchdown, and pound the ball down the middle when opposing defenses are shutting down the outside. Ole Miss hopes that Judd or Wilkins will be able to fill this role, as both players have the size for this. Wilkins looks to be the more physical of the two, but Judd offers value with his junior college
experience and complete running style. Look for Ole Miss to continue using multiple backs to fill out it’s running back rotation. Also look for an increased workload for some of the younger players on the roster, as well as the offense to implement a power running element that was sorely needed last year.

What’s next for team USA and soccer in the United States BY DYLAN RUBINO thedmsports@gmail.com
After the United States’ 2-1 loss to Belgium Tuesday that knocked the them out of the World Cup, someone went on U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard’s Wikipedia page and changed his profession to “secretary of defense.” It may sound weird because the United States lost, but whoever changed it is not far from accurate. Tim Howard recorded the most saves in a game in World Cup history with 16. It seemed as if all game he was diving left and right, making acrobatic saves with his arms and legs and giving his team a fighting chance until the very end. However, it was too little too late for the United States. For the second World Cup in a row, they were sent packing in the round of 16. The United States found themselves down in a 2-0 hole to Belgium, as the Red Devils scored both of their goals in extra time. Nineteen-year-
old Julian Green scored a goal in the 105th minute to give the Yanks hope, but it wasn’t enough. The hero of the game was Tim Howard, who put it all on the line for his team and his country. Even before his valorous performance, the country knew how good of a goalkeeper Tim Howard is. He’s widely regarded as a top five goalkeeper in the world and commands the net for English club Everton. The country not only seemed to rally around the heroic performance of Howard on Tuesday, but supported and followed this team from the very start, even when they were not expected to make it out of their group. After advancing out of the “group of death”, anything was possible for the United States and beating Belgium would have been a moment of epic proportions. A victory over Belgium would have pit the United States against Lionel Messi and Argentina, but it just was not meant to be.

United States’ goalkeeper Tim Howard celebrates after United States’ Jermaine Jones scored a goal during the group G World Cup soccer match between the USA and Portugal at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus, Brazil, Sunday.
When the 2018 World Cup in Russia starts, you will see a very different team out on the field for the United States. Tim Howard will have turned 39 years old. Clint Dempsey will have turned 35. Both of these iconic U.S. players will most likely not be on the roster. Jermaine Jones will have turned 35 years old, so his status for 2018 is unknown. Michael Bradley will have turned 29, but with his struggles in Brazil this World Cup, his status for 2018 is a question mark. Landon Donovan will certainly not be on the team. The young faces you got to know this World Cup run will play bigger and more expanded roles come 2018. Players like Jozy Altidore, Julian Green, John Brooks, Aron Johannsson, Matt Belser and
Fabian Johnson will all be big faces next World Cup. Who will replace Tim Howard in the net remains to be seen. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann made it clear this summer that he wants his roster to be full of young talent with fresh legs, speed and the ability to defend up and down the field at a high level. The cutting of Donovan is a sign that it’s Klinsmann’s way or no way, and that’s how it should be. Jurgen Klinsmann knew what he was getting into when he took the job as coach of the United States. He knew all the work he had to put in to build a quality team to make a run in the World Cup. Klinsmann also had to deal with changing a culture in the country that he coaches for. Soccer in the United States
isn’t the driving force that the sport wants it to be because there are four other major professional sports that the country rallies behind and pays their undivided attention to year round. Klinsmann not only built and coached arguable the greatest United States soccer team assembled, but he is starting to change the culture in our country. This process will definitely take time, but Klinsmann understands that and he’s the right man for the job. Soccer will grow in the United States, but give it time.
