Parking services plans for positive changes BY LOGAN KIRKLAND thedmnews@gmail.com

University of Mississippi Parking Services continues to develop plans for the upcoming school year to improve campus parking. Parking Services Director George Michael Harris said his department is looking to improve students’ and faculty’s experience with various outlets. Harris said numbers and statistics from the past were taken into consideration in order to better plan for the upcoming semester. “We are going to limit those commuter tags,” Harris said. Harris said based on last year’s numbers there will be a 10 percent decrease of people parking on campus, leaving a significant number of spaces open for drivers compared to last year. “This will take a strain off of the central campus,” Harris said. The new parking garage will add 500 open spaces that will be paid for hourly. Around 300 of those openings will be divided between faculty and staff. The

remaining spaces will be designated to graduate assistants and students based on classification. Harris said students would be given the opportunity to purchase a pass for the parking garage even if they have purchased a tag already. “You would just pay the difference,” Harris said. “I think it would hopefully cut down the traffic.” Students will also be able to take advantage of the Park and Ride option the university offers. There is an abundance of space for students, Harris said, and additional services have been added to make Park and Ride a viable option. “We are trying to get people to those open areas,” Harris said. Those who decide to use Park and Ride will have a bus that shuttles them from their cars to campus from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and there will be an extra bus introduced this fall to help improve the service. Harris said for students who

Challenge of Cochran win still days away JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — It could be days before Chris McDaniel challenges his loss to six-term Sen. Thad Cochran in Mississippi’s June 24 Republican primary runoff, an attorney for McDaniel’s campaign said Monday. The attorney, Mitch Tyner, said representatives of the campaign were in most of the state’s 82 counties on Monday to examine ballot boxes, including absentee ballots. He said they were looking for examples of people who might have violated state law by voting in the Democratic primary June 3 and the Republican runoff June 24. Tyner said it could be days before he reviews what the McDaniel representatives have been finding during their examination of ballot boxes. After that information is available, state law says a first challenge of election results would be filed with the Mississippi Republican Party executive committee. Tyner said that 10 days after a challenge is filed with the party, a lawsuit could be filed in state circuit court to seek a new election. Dear white gays, BY SIERRA MANNIE ssmannie@go.olemiss.edu

I need some of you to cut it the hell out. Maybe, for some of you, it’s a presumed similar appreciation for Beyoncé and weave that has you thinking that I’m going to be amused by you approaching me in your best “Shanequa from around the way” voice. I don’t know. What I do know is that I don’t care how well you can quote Madea, who told you that your booty was getting bigger than hers, how cute you think it is to call yourself a strong black woman, who taught you to twerk, how funny you think it is to call yourself Quita or Keisha or for which black male you’ve been

bottoming — you are not a black woman, and you do not get to claim either blackness or womanhood. It is not yours. It is not for you. Let me explain. Black people can’t have anything. Any of these things include, but aren’t limited to: a general sense of physical safety, comfort with law enforcement, adequate funding and appreciation for black spaces like schools and neighborhoods, appropriate venues for our voices to be heard about criticism of issues without our race going on trial because of it and solid voting rights (cc: Chris McDaniel.) And then, when you thought this pillaging couldn’t get any worse, extracurricular black activities get snatched up, too: our music, our dances, our slang, our clothing, our hairstyles — all of these things are rounded up,

continued from page 2 bad enough, but pairing it with patriarchal structures that intend to undermine women’s advancement is like double-fisting bleach and acid rain. At the end of the day, if you are a white male, gay or not, you retain so much privilege. What is extremely unfairly denied you because of your sexuality could float back to you, if no one knew that you preferred the romantic and sexual company of men over women. (You know what I’m talking about. Those “anonymous” torsos on Grindr, Jack’d and Adam4Adam are very familiar hypermasculine, hyper-heterosexual faces to the public.) The difference is that the black women with whom you think you align so well, whose language you use and stereotypical mannerisms you adopt, cannot hide their blackness and womanhood to protect ourselves the way that you can hide your homosexuality. We have no place to hide, or means to do it even if we desired them. In all of the ways that your gender and race give you so much, in those exact same ways, our gender and race work against our prosperity. All of this being said, you should not have to stop liking the things you like. This is not an attempt (of mine) unnecessary to try to suck the fun out of your

life. Appreciating a culture and appropriating one are very, very different things, with a much thicker line than some people think, if you use all of the three seconds it takes to be considerate before you open your mouth. If you love some of the same things that some black women love, by all means, you and your black girlfriends go ahead and rock the hell out. Regardless of what our privileges and lack of privileges are, regardless of the laws and rhetoric that have attempted to divide us, we are equal, even though we aren’t the same, and that is okay.

Best albums of the year so far BY CONNOR WROTEN connorwroten@gmail.com

We are halfway through the year, so now is a perfect time to have an arbitrary “Best Albums of 2014 So Far” list. Which albums made the cut and are considered the official choice cuts approved by me as of the publication of this article? The first album I would like to mention is the recent release from Rhode Island turned Oregon-based band The Body. The album, titled “I Shall Die Here,” was produced by dark ambient/drone electronic producer The Haxan Cloak, and it is a collaboration that I hope continues. Haxan Cloak’s production adds an intense roar on top of the already thick sludgy sound of the band that will rattle any sound system and darken the atmosphere of any room. Heavy and percussive bass thuds form the groundwork of the album while distant, shouted vocals rip through the haze of dark instrumentation. It delivers strong emotive performances akin to White Suns, who also had a great re-

lease this year titled “Totem.” Another album worth noting, if only for the production, is “Shelter” by Alcest. “Shelter” is an album that further progresses the French band’s evolution from metal music to more shoegazing territory. For those unfamiliar with the term, shoegaze is a genre of

music popularized by British bands like Slowdive (whose singer appears on the seventh track of “Shelter”), Ride and My Bloody Valentine that focuses heavily on textures of sound created by guitar effects pedals. Shoegaze generally features subdued vocals and thick, heavily layered in-

strumental tracks. “Shelter” was produced in Sundlaugin Studios by Birgir Jón Birgisson, known for his involvement with bands such as Sigur Rós, The Album Leaf, and múm. But the album shines in far more than the production. Each track increases in velocity as it trudges along, inevitably delivering moments that feel almost euphoric in just the listening experience alone. Lastly, and most importantly, is Swans’ instant classic “To Be Kind.” Swans is a band that would not be described as adhering to either contemporary song structure or brevity, with the longest track on “To Be Kind” reaching a mindmelting thirty-four minutes in length. Known for their intensity and creativity, Swans have released the two-hourlong album as a follow-up to 2012’s “The Seer,” which also featured exceptionally long tracks (almost three reaching a twenty minute mark) and an enormous overall length. Although very unique and innovative in the current day, Swans is a band that has been pushing limits and push-

ing buttons for decades now. Their first full length album, “Filth,” was released in 1983 and is still considered futuristic and terrifying by some. Still maintaining that sense of terror, “To Be Kind” features aggressive, all-out assaults from all members instrumentally, and also samples everything from unsettling laughter to whistles and to a stampede of horses. “To Be Kind” is an album to set aside and ingest just as you would a movie, as it will take you on an adventure of terror, apathy, nihilism, and beauty, much like Lars von Trier’s 2011 film “Melancholia.” While I could spend paragraph after paragraph talking about other incredible releases of the year so far like Liars’s experimental electrorock album “Mess” or more about Swans’ “To Be Kind,” I would much rather just save my long-windedness. If you have any albums that you think I should check out, please email me at the address provided with the article, since there has never been such a thing as too much music to listen to.

tends to challenge his loss, based on his belief that there might have been thousands of crossover votes from the Democrat primary to the Republican runoff. McDaniel has not released documents to support his claim. The Cochran campaign said Monday that it has representatives in every county to watch as McDaniel representatives examine ballot boxes. “The county-by-county results reported thus far are revealing an extremely low number of crossover votes from the June 24th election,” Cochran campaign spokesman Jordan

Party spokesman Bobby Morgan said results would be filed with the secretary of state’s office on time. It was unclear whether the numbers would be publicly released Monday. The Republican nominee will face two candidates in the Nov. 4 general election: Democratic former U.S. Rep. Russell said in a statement. “As the process moves forward, the conversation is shifting from wild, baseless accusations to hard facts. As we have said from the beginning, the runoff results are clear: The majority of Mississippians voted for Senator Thad Cochran.” Russell told The Associated Press the Cochran campaign had found one crossover vote out of more than 2,000 votes cast in Perry County; three crossovers out of more than 4,000 votes cast in Pontotoc County; five crossovers out of about 2,000 votes cast in Leake County; and seven crossovers out of more than 11,000 votes cast in Lauderdale County. He said the biggest challenge the University Police Department will face is making sure traffic does not become an issue for pedestrians. “We’ve got a big concern with the safety of our pedestrians,” Sellers said. “That’s what we have to focus on.” Banks Carlisle, sophomore math major, said he hopes last year’s problems will help improve the upcoming school year’s parking situation. Carlisle said he fears students will be faced with the same issue of more hangtags being given out than there are spots available, and thinks the options for drivers should be simpler. “I don’t think people should have multiple options on where they can park,” Carlisle said. “They should just be able to get parking where they live on campus, or if they are commuting

Preseason watch lists for two of college football’s top awards – the Maxwell Award and Chuck Bednarik Award – were announced Monday, with Ole Miss seniors Bo Wallace and Cody Prewitt among those listed. Wallace, entering his third season as the Rebels’ starting quarterback, makes the Maxwell Award watch list for the second straight year. The Pulaski, Tennessee, native who has claimed bowl game MVP honors each of the last two seasons has also been named preseason All-SEC by Phil Steele, Athlon and Lindy’s. He enters his senior year ranked second in school history in total offense (7,085 yards) and passing (6,340 yards) and first in passing efficiency (140.2) and completion percentage (64.3). Former Rebel Eli Manning won the Maxwell Award in 2003. Prewitt earned first team All-America honors as a free safety last year when he led the SEC and ranked among the nation’s leaders with six interceptions. The Bay Springs, Mississippi, native has been tabbed by most of the preseason magazines to repeat as an All-American in 2014. He was also a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive back. The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, has been given to America’s College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell’s contributions to the game of football were extensive, including as a player,

It’s every young baseball player’s dream to one day play professionally in the major leagues. For 10 Ole Miss Diamond Rebels, that dream is now a reality. It was a record-setting year for the Rebels, as nine players were selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball draft and will begin their careers as being professional baseball players. The number would soon increase to ten Rebels from the 2014 team being in the majors. Throughout the season, you would normally see thensenior John Gatlin coming in off the bench as a pinch hitter and coming up with timely hits in clutch situations. On June 24, Gatlin signed as a free agent with the Houston Astros organization not as a position player, but as a pitcher. Gatlin hasn’t pitched in a game since he was a junior in college, but

that’s what he will be for the Astros. He is currently in the Astros’ rookie team in the Gulf Coast League in Florida. No Rebels were selected on day one of the 2014 MLB Draft. On day two of the draft, the first Rebel selected was RHP Chris Ellis with the 88th pick of the third round by the Los Angeles Angels. Ellis was the ace of the Rebels’ pitching staff all season long, going 10-2 for the season with a 2.45 ERA in 17 starts. Ellis picked up big wins for the Rebels throughout the whole season, including wins over South Carolina, Mississippi State, Kentucky and a complete game against Jacksonville State in the first game of the NCAA tournament. He is starting his MLB career in Utah for the Orem Owls, the rookie minor league affiliate team for the Angels. Austin Bousfield was the next Rebel taken in the fifth round by the San Diego Padres. The Tampa Bay Rays selected leadoff hitter and outfielder Braxton Lee in the 12th round on day three of the draft. He is currently playing for Hudson Valley Renegades, the class A short-season affiliate for the Rays. Lee has made three starts for the Renegades, batting .33 so far going 5 for 15 from the plate with three RBI. The Detroit Tigers added another Rebel to their orga-

field was one of the best hitters for the Rebels all season, batting .349 for the season with 50 RBI and 96 hits. Bousfield is currently playing for the single A affiliate Eugene Emeralds for the Padres. He’s batting .111 so far. The Baltimore Orioles selected Austin Anderson with the 271st pick in the ninth round. Anderson served as one of the co-captains, along with Will Allen, for the Rebels. Anderson batted .331 for the season and was a key part of the middle of the lineup all season long. Anderson is currently on the roster for the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the class A short-season affiliate for the Orioles. RHP Josh Laxer was also selected in the ninth round. The Detroit Tigers selected him with the 280th pick. Laxer was one of the best arms coming out of the bullpen for the Rebels and had the most appearances out of the bullpen with 22. His 1.32 ERA was the lowest ERA out of any pitcher in the bullpen. Laxer also led the team in saves with six. Laxer is currently playing for the Connecticut Tigers, the class A short-season affiliate for the Ti-

nization by drafting former co-captain and catcher Will Allen in the 13th round. Allen was a finalist for the Johnny Bench award as the nation’s best catcher and was certainly deserving of the award, batting .345 for the season and leading the team in RBI’s with 61. The Seattle Mariners selected RHP Hawtin Buchanan in the 20th round. Buchanan played as a relief pitcher for the Rebels, only making 12 appearances for the season. Buchanan is currently pitching for the Everett AquaSox, the class A short-season affiliate for the Mariners. He has pitched 1.2 innings for the club so far, giving up no earned runs and hits on one walk and three strikeouts. The Houston Astros also have multiple Rebels in their organization by selecting RHP Aaron Greenwood in the 28th round. Greenwood was another key pitcher for the Rebels coming out of the bullpen, making 20 appearances out of the bullpen with a 1.96 ERA and collecting four saves in 41.1 innings work. Greenwood is currently pitching for the Greenville Astros, the rookie affiliate team for the Astros. He owns a 2-0 record in four games pitched. So far he has pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one earned run on four hits on no walks with four strikeouts. LHP Christian Trent was selected in the 20th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, but is very likely to come back to be the ace of the pitching staff for the Rebels next season.
