After a quarterback battle that lasted for the entirety of fall camp, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt named sophomore Barry Brunetti the starting quarterback for the season opener against BYU on Sept. 3. Nutt also said that junior Zack Stoudt will play,

Seven arrested at ATO party Saturday

Seven underage students were arrested in the backyard of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity on Aug. 20.

University police officers approached the rear of the ATO house, according to incident reports.

They were able to hear loud music being played and witnessed a large group of individuals in possession of

“intoxicating beverages,” both of which are university violations in regards to parties at fraternity houses.

The police first observed three individuals holding cans of Keystone Light. When approached by UPD, all three individuals admitted to being underage. All three were arrested for possession of beer under 21.

The officers then noticed four more students in possession of alcohol. Officers approached the individuals and determined that they were underage. All four were then issued post-arrest citations

for possession of light wine or beer below .05 percent alcohol.

The officers disposed of what was left in the containers before keeping the beer cans as evidence.

According to university rules, receiving a minor in possession while on campus is grounds to receive a strike.

Scott Wallace, assistant dean of students, said punishment for the fraternity has yet to be determined.

“There have been incidents of alcohol in and around fraternity houses,” Wallace said. “We are in an informa-

tion gathering stage to figure out if charges should be brought.”

Wallace said he is unsure of a timeline on when a decision will be made about punishment and noted that there are several steps in the process of making a decision.

“Anytime there is alcohol at a fraternity or sorority house, there is the possibility that they will receive some type of university charge, which may result in a violation of university policy,” he said.

Representatives of the local chapter of ATO were unavailable for comment.

Quarterback Randall Mackey was arrested for disorderly conduct late Monday night, early Tuesday morning.

Mackey was not at practice Tuesday due to a class conflict.

After practice Tuesday, Nutt said Mackey will not play the first game Sept. 3 against BYU. “I’ll take care of it the right way,” Nutt said of his discipline of Mackey. “I always have, always will. Randall Mackey will not play the first game. I’m still looking into everything. The bottom line is he got in a fight.

“The bottom line, like I tell them, even though there may be 50 arrests, your arrest is headlines. Walk away. Turn the other check. It’s tough to, but we try to preach that all the time — walk away.”

Mackey, a junior from Bastrop, La., was received at the Lafayette County Detention Center at 12:26 a.m. on charges of disorderly conduct — failure to comply — at the Lyric Theater.

According to the affadavit of arrest, “a large fight broke out” inside the Lyric. In the affadavit, the arresting officer, Hildon Sessums of the Oxford Police Department, and other officers, tried to break up the fight “when Mr. Randall Mackey came forward and hit said officer in the lip.”

Mackey insisted he was pushed in the affadavit of arrest. Mackey was then taken outside and placed into custody.

Mackey was released later that morning at 9:05 a.m. He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m.

“I have tremendous respect for our authority, but when you have that big of a get-together party coming back when school opens, all in one place, that many people and especially when people come from out-of-town, it’s not a good scenario,” Nutt said regarding Mackey’s arrest.

“So you have got to use good judgement. You have got to think. And the bottom line is, wasn’t a good decision made.

The writing on the wall

In a world of technological advancement, we naturally look to replace outdated, obsolete traditions with newer ones to make our lives more convenient.

The typewriter, the telegraph and the icebox each present their own grim stories of how they used to be back in the day.

The typewriter gave way to the computer, the telegraph became the telephone and the icebox became a refrigerator.

Something that is of very common use to us may become the next obsolete item in the world: cursive hand-

writing.

Many schools in the United States are beginning to stop teaching the art of cursive handwriting to elementaryaged children – most recently, the states of Indiana and Hawaii.

The continuous, artful type of writing that we spent hours learning as children is dying very quickly.

Replacing cursive handwriting in the schools’ curriculum are typing courses that teach children how to type effectively for the evolving, modern world.

In a New York Times’ “facein-palms” quote of the day in 2009, Carl Brown, principal of Manatee Elementary School in Viera, Fla., said, “With all the other subjects we must teach, we just don’t have the time to spend a lot of effort on cursive.” Brown, like many other educators in

the world today, has become inhibited by the ways of the world.

The hustle and bustle of today’s world takes a toll on everyone.

Specifically in the education sector, legislatures are putting immense pressure on educators to teach our children more.

Now the story is beginning to fall on our country’s education system as a whole. Instead of trying to teach more to our children, we should keep the workloads to a minimum while teaching children the basics more effectively.

A “basic” in my book is cursive handwriting.

Think back to when you learned cursive. Flashbacks of the tedious repetition of looping lowercase L’s, dotting lowercase I’s and crossing T’s have me cringing as I type this column.

Those handwriting tablet books may have seemed miserable at the time, but we can all agree that the time and effort we contributed to those books were completely worth it.

In the latter paragraph, I mentioned that I am typing this column.

Carl Brown might argue that I am making an illogical point and contradicting myself.

To Brown and others that support the abolishment of teaching cursive I ask, “How do you receive compensation for your employment?”

A signed check in cursive handwriting. How do you most effectively personalize a thank you note or card? A note or card written in cursive handwriting. How do banks often verify your identity? A signature in cursive handwriting.

While we are not teaching our children cursive, we should

also stop teaching basic math as well. We have computers to replace cursive handwriting, right?

Essentially, we have calculators to replace basic math skills, too. The fact that people want to do away with cursive handwriting is simply unbelievable to me. It is a timeless art that has been in existence for centuries.

If anything, the idea seems to be lazy instead of innovative. The idea that my children and grandchildren may not know how to write in cursive completely amazes me.

Once again, the American way of life that we are so accustomed to wins again.

This time, it’s just plain embarrassing.

I thought I would travel more, go out more and take spontaneous trips to random places for no reason other than wanting to go.

Now I’m afraid I won’t have time to get to experience all these things before it’s over.

And while I was having a mini panic attack over all this, I realized that I’m not dying.

Who says that every amazing experience I have has to occur while I’m young and in college?

That’s not to say that people shouldn’t pursue their dreams young, but who says dreaming has to die after I graduate?

Why can’t I be 45 and still chasing excitement, still doing

what I love? College, in my opinion, is all about figuring yourself out.

Yes, the education is extremely important, but that’s only part of the experience.

During our time here, we learn a lot about ourselves. We find things we’re passionate about and things we absolutely hate. We discover how well we handle being on our own for everything from laundry to studying when we’d rather be out with friends.

This is an important time in our lives, there’s no doubt about that, but it’s not the only time in our lives.

College should be a beginning, not an end. It would be a waste to discover so much about ourselves and then throw

it all way by being convinced that the time for dreams and goals is over.

During my time at Ole Miss, I’ve learned a lot. I learned that everyone here is almost as clueless as I am about what they want to do with their lives, and that’s OK. Life is meant to be figured out as we go. I’ve also learned that everyone is at least a little socially awkward; I’m not the only one.

There’s no shame in it; I should get to know people anyway. Most importantly, I’ve learned that it’s best to not stress about the future.

I’m not dead yet

I feel so old.

My first two years of college flew by. Now I’m in my junior year, and I’m not entirely sure how I got here.

I know every person older than me is rolling their eyes, but surely you can understand where I’m coming from. Junior year is crazy and full of change.

My teenage years ended in June when I turned 20. I can no longer blame irrational behavior on being a teenager, and to be honest, I don’t know where those years went.

They’re all a blur.

Everyone expects me to be grown up now, but sometimes

I still want my mommy to fix all my problems.

Until this year, people have always acted like I have plenty of time to settle on a career path, get married and settle down.

But now I’m expected to know what I want to do with my life, and sadly, being a MightyMorphin’ Power Ranger (the pink one, of course) is no longer a valid option.

Graduate school and “the real world” are looming on the horizon, and it’s terrifying. I was just getting used to undergraduate school, and it’s already halfway over.

I feel like someone who is approaching death and thinking of all the things they would have liked to have done but

continued from page 2 oneself to only one path and only one set of opportunities is a mistake that too many people make.

College isn’t the last chapter of our lives, and the years that follow aren’t merely the epilogue. Rather, college is the first chapter, and everything that follows is the actual plot.

C.S. Lewis, the author of “The Chronicles of Narnia” series, once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

I’ve found a great deal of comfort in those words. So instead of trying to cram every dream I’ve ever had into four years, I’m taking it one day at

a time.

My life doesn’t end when I leave Ole Miss. If anything, it’s just getting started. We have plenty of time to achieve our goals.

So if you find yourself in your junior year, or whichever year, scrambling to achieve as much as possible before you have to “grow up,” realize that the majority of your life is yet to be lived. It would be a shame to settle for less than what you want just because you think you’re too old to still have a chance at fulfilling your dreams or because you think it’s foolish to pursue them.

It’s never too late.

city news briefs Quake rattles nerves but infrastructure holds up; Senate in session in nearby building Stones, tiles and plaster came crashing down from landmarks around Washington, D.C., and a nearby nuclear power plant shut down during Tuesday’s surprisingly strong earthquake that rattled buildings over hundreds of miles along the East Coast.

The region’s infrastructure and communications networks were tested and generally appeared to have held up well.

The White House said advisers told President Barack Obama, who is vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., that there had been no reports of major infrastructure damage.

Still, at least three of the four pinnacles fell from the towering Washington National Cathedral, said the Episcopal landmark’s spokesman Richard Weinberg. And a crack was found near the top of the Washington Monument.

Elsewhere around the nation’s capital, 90 miles northeast of the quake’s epicenter in Virginia, ceiling tiles fell to the

floor at Reagan National Airport. The gothic-style Smithsonian Castle, built in 1857, had minor cracks and broken glass, said Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough.

And vigorous shaking left a crack and hole in the ceiling at historic Union Station when a chuck of plaster fell near the main entrance. Officials strung up caution tape around a large area of floor.

--------The Senate held an unusual session away from the Capitol after Tuesday’s earthquake led to the evacuation of the building.

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware presided over a 22-second technical session in a conference room in Postal Square, a building next to Union Station and two blocks northeast of the Capitol.

The session was necessary because Congress has not formally recessed, even though lawmakers are on a monthlong vacation.

DuPree wins Democratic nomination for Miss. gov Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree on Tuesday won the Democratic nomination for Mississippi governor, becoming the first black candidate to win major-party nod for the state’s top job.

DuPree defeated Clarksdale attorney and developer Bill Luckett in a Democratic primary runoff.

DuPree, 57, advances to the Nov. 8 general election to face Republican Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, 56, of Brandon. Bryant already has spent $3.1 million

on his campaign — more than twice as much as DuPree and Luckett, combined.

Independent Will Oatis of Silver Creek is running a lowbudget campaign for governor.

Two rival factions of the Reform Party also want to put a candidate in the race, but the state Board of Election Commissioners has not yet decided which Reform candidate — if either — can to run.

Republican Gov. Haley Barbour could not seek a third term this year.

O.U.T Bus to build new facility

With a growing student population, the demands of the O.U.T. bus system have increased, calling for a better facility.

The Oxford University Transit bus system has been available to Ole Miss students since October 2008. The bus offers free transportation for students in efforts to decongest the crowded campus parking lots.

Ron Biggs, General Manger of O.U.T., said the transit commission has known that a new facility would eventually be needed.

“This was merely a temporary location that we started out in, and we knew from the beginning that we were going to have to build the transit a facilitation for the system to be as successful as it is,” Biggs said.

The current location of the O.U.T. office and facility is on University Ave. “This particular facility was the old Armory building and Boys and Girls’ club and is not suited for a transit and equipped for work that needs to be done on the buses,” Biggs said.

This creates problems for the overcrowded routes, and Biggs said he hopes that O.U.T. will be able to accommodate the passengers and need for transportation throughout the city.

“I’m happy to be a part of this new transit system,” Biggs said. “It has turned out to be quite successful. Hopefully we will do what we need to do to make this system effective for the people of the city of Oxford.”

major, has always taken advantage of the O.U.T. bus. Patel said there is a significant difference in the amount of people on the buses this year.

“Last year the buses ran every five minutes. You could always rely for the bus to be there on time,” Patel said. “This year, I took the bus from the south lot. The bus to campus was not crowded, but going back it was very crowded. The air conditioners were not working.

Seats were not available, so everybody was crammed in the aisle.”

Construction for the new O.U.T. facility has been approved with a hope to break ground this winter, Biggs said.

The facility will be located on McElroy, south of the Animal Shelter. Although construction is behind schedule, O.U.T. plans to complete the facility by summer 2012.

The estimated cost of the new facility will be $1.2 million. Biggs said most of the money to fund the new facility will be from Federal Transit Administration, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and different grants, along with contributions from the city and the university.

Planning for the new facility was a collaborative effort between FTA, Miss. Department of Transportation, Board of Aldermen, Transit Commission and others. Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson, said that his contribution was simply being supportive.

Patterson commended everyone on doing an excellent job in planning for the new facility.

“I think it serves our community and the University students well,” Patterson said. “I think it has been an absolute hit.”

Man arrested in serial exposure investigations

Another serial case of crude crime has struck Oxford.

However, this lewd criminal didn’t get away with as much as the “Panty Thief.”

University Police Chief Calvin Sellars confirmed that someone who matches the description given out by the police has been arrested by the Oxford Police Department.

No charges have been formally filed as of yet.

According to Mississippi law, a “person who willfully and lewdly exposes his person, or private parts thereof, in any public place, or in any place where others are present, or procures another to so expose himself, is guilty of a misdemeanor and, on convic-

up to his second victim, got out of his truck and began “shaking his penis” at her.

This was the only incident where the suspect was reported to have a passenger in his car, who was also described as a male in his 20s.

The latest reported exposure by a suspect matching this description was at the Ford Center a day later.

He exposed himself to the victim while driving. Following the incident, OPD was advised and spotted a blue Ford Ranger, but described the driver as a male in his late 20s or early 30s, with dark brown hair, which did not match the description of the suspect.

If the suspect is charged for all three exposure cases, he could face up to $1,500 and 18 months of jail time.

There were three cases of indecent exposure where the descriptions of the perpetrator were the same, or similar.

In each incident, the suspect was described as an overweight, white male in his early 20s with short, blondish brown hair and bangs, driving a metallic blue Ford Ranger with a Mississippi license plate.

In the first incident, which took place on Aug. 11, a white male was reported to be masturbating while driving his truck between Lamar Hall and the Inn at Ole Miss.

The next incident took place in the Megalot parking lot on University Place on Aug. 16.

Ole Miss introduces Rebel Go

Ole Miss introduced Zipcar, a car-share program that is used internationally yesterday.

Zipcar is part of a new program being introduced by the Office of Campus Sustainability called “Rebel Go.” “Rebel Go is a new kind of umbrella brand for our transit programs on campus,” said Jim Morrison, director of strategic planning and campus sustainability.

Morrison said that the Office of Campus Sustainability has been working on this program for several years.

“It is a new comprehensive program that includes Rebel Pedals, the O.U.T. busses, Zipcar and we just recently announced Zimride, our new ride-share program,” Morrison said.

Richard Paisner, a university account manager with Zipcar, was at the Union yesterday to help the university promote the new program.

“For the university, it’s a situation where (they) are trying to become carbon-neutral,” Paisner said, while handing out flyers to students. “They are trying to re-

claim some green space. So it’s a win-win.”

Paige Donaldson, a freshman nursing major, said that she is considering using the program.

“It’s pretty cool,” the Southaven native said. “I don’t have a car and it would help me get around.”

Morrison said the new program is already looking to help their different wings expand.

“Our bike-share program ran out of bikes in the first two hours (Monday), so we need more bikes,” Morrison said. “Zipcar will expand as more and more people use them.”

Morrison also said the number of students using the bus program has grown exponentially over the last two years.

“Five thousand students used it in August two years ago, and 3,000 used it on the first day of lass last year,” he said.

Morrison said that he hopes the programs help both students who own and don’t own their own transportation.

“We want to expand the program, especially for the students who don’t have any form of transportation, but also for the students who are looking to lower their cost-of-living,” Morrison said.

The Zipcar tent will be outside of the Union for one more day.

Democrat Sylvia J. Baker won not only the run-off for the democratic candidacy for Lafayette County tax assesor/collector — she will also win the general election since there is no Republican candidate running against her.

She won the primary run-off with 71.37 percent of the votes, against democratic candidate L. Hickman Spragins.

Baker worked under previous tax assessor/collector, Martha Thornton, who did not run for reelection.

Republican Trammell P. Wells won the Republican nod for District 4 Supervisor, with a 56.99 percent over Cecil D. Locke. Wells will face Chad D. McLarty on Nov. 8. Incumbent Lloyd Oliphant was ousted in the Aug. 2 primary by McLarty.

Democrat Mike Roberts defeated incumbent District 5 supervisor, Ray Sockwell, Jr., by 51.48 percent in last nights run-off. Roberts will now face Republican candidate Greg Bounds for the supervisor position.

Jack Theobald won the democratic nomination for Southern District Constable, defeating Joe Maples by 63.03 percent.

Theater Oxford brings community together

Minutes before the start of the final rehearsal, the director gives Stella a note about her performance.

The cast (Stella included) begins to laugh, and the nervous energy from the final dress jitters begins to wash away.

But despite the jovial demeanor, the group is not only here for fun; they have worked for weeks on end to bring a strong performance of a local favorite to the Oxford community.

Theatre Oxford, the community theater of Oxford since 1997, is honoring the 100th birthday of Tennessee Williams with a production of one of his most well-known gems, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” this week at The Powerhouse to close out the 2010-2011 season.

Set in late 1940s New Orleans, La., “Streetcar” tells the story of the overly-dramatic and self-indulgent Blanche DuBois’s return to her sister, Stella Kowalski, after quite a few years of lackluster correspondence.

Her lengthy visit brings Kowalski’s husband Stanley extra stress and frustration, building to one of the most iconic scenes and lines of entertainment history.

Jared Davis, University of Mississippi theater alum and current university staff member, stepped in to direct the production after a last-minute drop-out by the original director.

Having worked closely with the Ole Miss theater department during his undergraduate career, Davis was recommended for the position.

As he darts around from the man hanging lights to the stage manager calling times to the actors questioning their blocking, Davis fights to bring a professional, high-scale feel to a lowbudget production.

Since the production was set to honor the great Southern playwright, Davis voted to leave the script virtually untouched.

While the production might be longer than what a modernday audience is accustomed to, he felt it was important to do the show the way Williams’ intended it.

“I was trying to do Williams’ full script without cutting it to bits — I wanted to do what he wrote,” Davis said. “He put a lot of work into every single line, not just the important parts of the scene. Other scripts I wouldn’t feel as concerned about cutting, but Williams… he really slaved over every word, and that’s important to me.”

Davis was willing to step up not only because of his love for Williams, but also because of

the opportunities the local arts scene has to offer.

“At this time, there are few boundaries as to how far it can go,” Davis said. “The idea of building up the arts in this town, shedding new, younger light, is incredible.”

At the auditions in April, students from the university mingled with the community members for the first time in the company’s history, which is a sign that the community is growing and attracting more attention among young adults.

“The scene, the community — it’s growing,” Davis said.

“It’s not as distant as professional theater, so it draws in people who wouldn’t usually take in a show. Coming to watch is coming to support your friends and neighbors, not just someone’s bank account.”

One of the most overlooked aspects of the theater are the people working tirelessly backstage in the dark to make sure no skirt catches fire and no shoelace gets snagged on a nail.

A major attribute of the cast and crew of Theatre Oxford is their willingness to work day and night without pay, using

the motivation that their work will not only help the production, but the community as a whole.

The current schedule for their upcoming season includes a 10-minute play festival in late September, “A Christmas Presence” by Dinah Swan in December, “Glengarry Glen Ross” by David Mamet in February and “Steel Magnolias” by Robert Harling next August.

Tickets are $12 for the Wednesday and Friday performances and can be purchased at The Powerhouse or theatreoxford.com. House opens at 7:30 p.m. with a curtain time of 8 p.m.

Tickets for the dinner theater performance Thursday night are $40. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. with an 8 p.m. curtain time.

Members of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will receive a discount, and Theatre Oxford is always looking for willing volunteers to help with their productions.

Turner Center kicks off semester with class in the Grove

Let’s face it: college is typically an unhealthy environment.

Living on a low budget, drinking alcohol and going on midnight Taco Bell runs doesn’t help anyone achieve his or her optimal levels of health and fitness, but this Saturday you can do something to help combat the negative effects of the college lifestyle.

The Ole Miss Fitness Center is having its Fall Group Fitness Kick-off in the Grove from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., and the event seems to have something for all exercise tastes.

The classes featured are Zumba, a Latin-inspired cardio dance class, kickboxing, cardio mix, athletic conditioning, HABIT (Hips, Abs, Butt, Inner Thigh) and yoga/pilates.

Each segment will last around 30 minutes, and attendees can stay for as many or as few classes as they want.

The kick-off is a good way for people to get a preview of what group fitness classes have to offer this semester.

Julia Koch, a junior exercise science major, is one of the instructors planning the event.

She said that her goal for the kick-off is to give students a “little taste” of what group fitness is about.

Koch also hopes it will get people excited about the programs at Ole Miss and encourage them to check out all the classes offered.

The group fitness aspect of the fitness center has continued to gain more and more interest from students each semester.

Koch said that she enjoys teaching classes, and her goal is to provide an enjoyable way for people to “get moving and pumped about taking care of themselves.”

The event will also be a great way for freshmen to get acquainted with the department of campus recreation, which includes Ole Miss Outdoors, intramurals, aquatics and sports clubs, along with the fitness center.

She believes that many students’ first exposure to fitness is campus recreation and that group fitness classes often help students find guidance in and gain familiarity with the gym.

Hall said she feels group fitness can often give people confidence in their ability to work out.

Last spring, the fitness center hosted a few group fitness classes in the Grove.

Not only was it nice to be outdoors, it also allowed for more participants. The classes were a success, so the fitness center decided to host this year’s kick-off outdoors as well.

Mats will be provided at the event so all patrons need to bring is their student ID or Turner Center member ID and a bottle of water.

Prizes will also be given out between classes.

The rain site location for the event is Turner Room 305.

It may be easy to be unhealthy while in college, but there’s no greater time to get in shape.

“I’m excited,” Stoudt said. “It’s a great opportunity. I came here to get that opportunity and now I’m getting it. We (Brunetti and Stoudt) are not angry that we are both playing. We think we’ve got a good game plan going in, and we should come out strong and have a good offense.”

Through fall practice, Brunetti showed he could be a strong runner, while Stoudt showed he could be a strong passer.

Stoudt thinks their two styles of play complement each other going into the season opener.

“I think that it’s hard for a defense to have to adjust to two totally different styles of offense,” Stoudt said.

“But, yet, we can both run the entire offense, just one of us runs each section of the offense better.”

Brunetti is also said to be the quarterback the coaches can trust the most to be where he is supposed to be and do what he is supposed to do. Brunetti has shown mobility both inside and outside the pocket this fall camp. Through the first two scrimmages, he was unofficially 6-for-14 passing for 100 yards and one touchdown.

After an average spring, Smith turned it on during fall practice and worked himself into a starting spot by the close of fall camp.

“I started off with the second (team) defensive line and struggled a little bit during the spring, but I’ve been working hard this summer,” Smith said. “We’ve got a lot of competition on the defensive line, and all of us have been pushing each other.

There’s been a lot of competition, and I think it has helped the defensive line as a whole.”

The progress made by Smith during fall camp did not go unnoticed by Nutt. “(Smith is) another senior that is playing really good for us,” Nutt said of Smith.

“I am very proud of him.

He has been very tough throughout camp. His leadership has been outstanding.”

Mosley arrested for being drunk in public late Saturday night/early Sunday morning Ole Miss tight end Jamal Mosley, a junior from Memphis, was arrested late Saturday night, early Sunday morning. He was received at the Lafayette County Detention Center at 1:15 a.m. on charges of being drunk in public on North Lamar Boulevard. The arresting officer was Christopher Wray of the Oxford Police Department, and Mosley was released from jail later that morning at 8:05 a.m. He is also scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m.

Molsey practiced on Tuesday and Nutt briefly addressed his discipline following practice.

“We’ve already disciplined the (players) that are supposed to be disciplined,” he said. “Jamal Mosley — same thing. Discipline, done, finished.”

Morris pushes for playing time After the Aug. 13 scrimmage where head coach Houston Nutt described him as the “most physical lineman,” freshman offensive lineman Aaron Morris pushed through to firstteam offensive line at left guard during practice on Aug. 15.

“Aaron Morris has made a huge jump,” Nutt said. “He is very mature for his age. He was the most physical offensive lineman in the scrimmage Saturday, and that is why he is in that starting spot.”

Ole Miss offensive line coach Mike Markuson also praised the impact Morris had during fall camp but mentioned the depth chart continues to

change, with sophomore Patrick Junen regaining his starting position in the next day of practice.

“For a true freshman, he’s done a lot of good things,” Markuson said of Morris.

“We’re really pleased with his progress. (The depth chart) is subject to change every day.

You just keep working and see what the next guy does compared to that guy and just keep working on it.”

Golson makes decision, returns to Oxford It was a whirlwind week for Senquez Golson, and the talented cornerback returned to Ole Miss practice last Friday after turning down a substantial offer from the Boston Red Sox earlier in the week.

“I’m glad to be back,” Golson

said last Friday, Aug. 19. “I feel kind of slow, I guess because I haven’t been running the past couple days, but I’m happy to be back out here.”

Golson flew to Boston on Aug. 15 to meet with Red Sox representative and to continue negotiating for a potential contract at Fenway Park.

“It was a long day, a very long day,” Golson said of the negotiations. “We probably sat around and talked about contracts from 5 p.m. to 12 (midnight).”

More than anything, Golson said he was just glad to have the decision behind him.

“Now I can concentrate on one thing rather than going back to my dorm and thinking about what I wanted to do,” Golson said after returning to practice. “I can’t look back

“Some of these younger guys are growing up, and some of the older guys like (Kentrell) Lockett and Joel Kight are helping the younger guys,” Nutt said.

Nutt mentioned senior running backs Brandon Bolden and Enrique Davis, as well as senior offensive tackle Bradley Sowell and junior tight end Ferbia Allen for their play at practice.
