From your run-of-the-mill fans to that girl with the pink sweater who came here last year to LeBron James himself, it’s obvious that tons of people love Ole Miss football. Also, tons of people hate Ole Miss football, but most of them are wearing houndstooth fedoras and looks of despair. So it’s okay to completely disregard their opinions about everything, anyway. Check out the tweets below for some of the best Rebel cheers and the tastiest Tide…well, tears.

‘It’s our time now’: Students react to ’Bama win BY TAYLOR BENNETT AND ARIEL COBBERT

Matthew Holloway Theatre Arts Sophomore

Allison Hanby Public Policy Leadership Sophomore

Gage Bolesta Accounting Sophomore

“It was pretty crazy. I feel like we’re the new Alabama now. Alabama had its reign, and now it’s our time. We went to their house, we took over, and we walked out with our heads high. And they had to walk out of their own home with their heads low, so I feel like it’s just nothing but boost for this school. We’re a big contender now.”

“I knew we were going to win the whole time, and I can’t wait to come back here next year and destroy them on our own turf. I think that ‘Bama needs to step aside ‘cause we’re number one now.

“It feels really good, because last year they said that we won by luck, so now that we’ve won two years in a row, it just shows that we have skill. And it’s not by luck. It feels really good to beat them, especially because they’re like our second biggest rival next to State.”

“I think it’s great. I got to stand in the student section, and it brings a feeling of unification among the student body knowing that we’re improving and we’re there to cheer on the team when the game is that close.”

“It was awesome being there for the rivalry game and then for the revenge game and the fact that they didn’t get it. It was only our second win in Tuscaloosa in school history, so it was awesome. I was in all of my Ole Miss stuff - only one in their student section. My life felt kind of threatened, but it was definitely worth it. It was an awesome game.”

“I feel good about us beating ‘Bama. I think it’s a great accomplishment for the school, and everyone in the nation realized we’re not no little school in the SEC anymore. We’re trying to take over the SEC, and we’re letting everyone know that by beating ‘Bama two years in a row.”

“I grew up an Alabama fan, so as soon as the game was over, I called my family ‘cause they’re all Alabama fans, and I told them ‘Hotty Toddy.’ And I did the chant to them, and now they hate me. Everything is fine, so Hotty Toddy.”

John Brahan Public Policy Leadership/Theater Junior “I was pumped. I was jacked. I feel really good about it. I think that it really says a lot that we were able to beat that team two years in a row. I’m really excited about the future of Ole Miss Football and the direction that we’re going. I see a lot of W’s in our future.”

“It was just one of the best games I’ve seen in a while. I mean, I think that’s going to be one of the best games all year, and it was fun to experience it.”

THE NEXT MORNING:

I wake up spooning a bag of chips, my dead phone in my hand. After charging it up, I recall messaging and snapchatting pretty much everyone I’ve ever met to tell them all about how the Rebels defeated the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa for the second time in the history of the world. I am so proud to be a Rebel and I am so joyous that we won. My throat hurts from screaming at my TV, but I don’t care.

FOURTH QUARTER:

I have made my way back to my apartment because I apparently cannot handle watching the game in public. But that is probably for the best because as the clock counts down I am literally on the floor pencil rolling and screaming with excitement. Every time Alabama has the ball I am convinced they are going to take the lead, and we’ll run out of time, and everything will be bad. I keep picking up the pillows on my couch and throwing them on the floor. I feel like I haven’t exhaled in 80 years.

HALFTIME:

Things are getting pretty heated. I have punched a ceiling fan and accidentally hit someone with my elbow. There have been so many ups and downs, and it’s only the first half. Can we beat Bama? This obviously isn’t a cupcake team, so, we probably won’t score 1,000 points. But I am really hoping the Rebs show the Crimson Tide we mean business. Forget just playing a good game, I want to win, damn it.

For any Ole Miss Rebel, football isn’t just a game we watch on Saturday. It is a religious experience, a spiritual journey. This weekend, the Rebs took us on an emotional rollercoaster ride I will probably tell my grandchildren about. Have I recovered? Not yet. But that’s okay, because, based on Parker Barrineau’s tweets, Alabama hasn’t emotionally recovered after a stunning Rebel Victory. How can one really describe the feels experienced during Saturday’s game?

Intense competition matched with crazy plays CODY THOMASON

csthoma1@go.olemiss.edu

The matchup between Ole Miss and Alabama was sure to be a game for the ages. No one could predict the crazy twists and turns the game would take en route to a 43-37 Ole Miss victory, however. The standout play of the game came when junior quarterback Chad Kelly bobbled the snap and flung the ball to Laquon Treadwell to avoid the rush. The ball was tipped into the air, but fortuitously fell into the hands of junior wide receiver Quincy Adeboyejo, who immediately raced to the end zone to score a 66-yard touchdown. “I didn’t catch the snap right away, and I just figured with Laquon, he’s 6-foot-3. He can jump the highest out of anybody, so I gave him a chance and, the Lord is great,” Kelly said. Head coach Hugh Freeze also seemed almost dumbfounded by the play. “The only thing I can say about that is to God be the glory,” Freeze said. Freeze said his first thought while watching the play was, “What are you doing, Chad?” “He came over and I said to him, ‘Brother, you need to pray hard tonight and thank God, and let’s not do that again,’” Freeze said. Junior defensive tackle Rob-

I was so happy for him and for everybody,” Nkemdiche said. “Sometimes, just good stuff happens to people that do good. I was just so happy for Quincy

(Adeboyejo) and happy we got the win.” Adeboyejo was just as shocked as anyone when the ball somehow fell into his hands. The recipient of the play gave an account of the moment from his own eyes. “I saw Chad fumble the snap, I had a feeling he was just going

to throw it up,” Adeboyejo said. “I was running up under the ball. I thought the other guys misjudged it so I thought from the start it was going over their heads and I’m about to run up under it. Once they got to it they tipped it in the air, I saw the ball, grabbed it and from there, I just had to go score.” The play went so fast that the shock didn’t hit Adeboyejo until he stepped off the field. “I wasn’t surprised until I was on the sideline, then I was like ‘Wow, that just happened’.” The unlikely touchdown proved to be a momentum boost for the Rebels— one that carried on throughout the game. “Right after that you think, hey we’re winning this, and that’s exactly how we all thought, we knew this was our game,” Kelly said. With the way fortune favored the Rebels, it was hard not to foresee Ole Miss coming out with the win. Nkemdiche agreed. “I was like, ‘This is our night.

Things are going our way and we’re playing really hard for 60 minutes,” Nkemdiche said. Another pivotal play came on a long-passing touchdown from Kelly to wideout Cody Core. The play was originally ruled an illegal forward pass, and the play was reviewed to see if Kelly had crossed the line of scrimmage before the pass. The ruling was changed to a Rebels touchdown. “Both legs and the ball have to be over the line, and I was pretty confident that his back leg was behind the line at least, if not more,” Freeze said. Overall, Freeze said the twists and turns of the game were exhausting for him. “I really thought after Laquon scored the touchdown the game was over, they come back and take a little time getting it in then get the onside kick,” Freeze said. “It was a great onside kick it hopped right at the right time and just went too high for our back line to grab it, then they made it a one score game.”

continued from page 12 third quarter, it never quite felt safe in Crimson territory. Alabama quarterback Jake Coker came off the bench for Cooper Bateman in the second quarter and led the Crimson Tide to four scoring drives, inching closer to the Rebels and cutting the Ole Miss lead to one score, twice. Alabama fought until the very end, but five turnovers and facing a 20-point uphill climb proved to be too much to overcome. “It was an emotional rollercoaster,” Freeze said. “I thought we had it put away a couple of times. They just wouldn’t go away.” The Ole Miss defense looked drained when Alabama starting finding their momentum at many moments during the

Alabama ran 100 total plays on offense to stage two furious comebacks, but the Rebel defense found life and made the necessary plays to pull off another win over Alabama. “We just found a little left,” Freeze said. “We were drained, man.” Junior defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche played arguably the best game of his career Saturday night. Nkemdiche finished the game with six total tackles, including 0.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for losses. Nkemdiche looked explosive on the defensive line and a half step faster than any Alabama lineman. There is no doubt last year’s win over Alabama was a memorable one, but Nkemdiche felt

this time was different. “This one is better,” Nkemdiche said. “I just feel like there was so much more on the line and it’s going to set up for something great this season.” After the victory, “The Outsiders” by country music star Eric

Church was blaring through the locker room speakers. Church, the guest picker at ESPN’s College Gameday, was in the locker room with the Rebels singing his famous song and celebrating with Ole Miss. That was the icing on the cake

for Freeze, capping off a historic night. “That’s one of country music’s heroes, man,” Freeze said, laughing. “I appreciate our fans and our administration and everything they’ve done to building this program.”

Ole Miss makes history, upsets Alabama 43-37 DYLAN RUBINO

thedmsports@gmail.com

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. - Football is a collection of fleeting moments. Split-seconds when the right choice has to be made to win, and if not, to suffer the consequences. For Ole Miss Saturday night in Bryant-Denny Stadium, there were many of those moments in the historic 43-37 upset over then second-ranked Alabama. None perhaps more memorable than junior receiver Quincy Adeboyejo’s tipped reception and 66-yard touchdown to put Ole Miss up 24-10 early in the third quarter. A bad snap caused junior quarterback Chad Kelly to chuck a lob in Laquon Treadwell’s general direction. The ball was deflected and fell into Adeboyejo’s hands and he raced for the end zone, right in front of the howling Alabama student section. “That happened in my prayer time today,” Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss head coach, said. “That’s the only thing I can say about

that.” “Right after that, you automatically think ‘Hey, we’re winning this.’ That’s exactly how we all thought,” Kelly said. “We knew this was our game.” Adeboyejo’s reception is already receiving titles, but Adeboyejo laughed when he heard ‘tip-six’. “That’s definitely my favorite one,” Adeboyejo said. “It’s just crazy how it all happened so fast.” Led by another stellar performance from Kelly and the ‘landshark’ defense’s forcing five turnovers, the Rebels did something they’ve never done before; they beat Alabama consecutively. More than 100,000 screaming Alabama fans packed Bryant-Denny Stadium and never saw a lead for their beloved Crimson Tide as the Rebels won in Tuscaloosa for the first time 1988. “Oh man. What a game,” Freeze said. “The great thing about it is we can improve so much from this. There’s so many things we could’ve done

better tonight. If our kids will stay hungry and with the right demeanor and stay humble, I know we can get a lot better than we played tonight.” With the rare road win in Tuscaloosa, Ole Miss vaulted up to third in the weekly AP Poll. With the loss, Alabama has dropped to 12th, the first time the Crimson Tide haven’t been ranked in the AP Top 10 since 2010. It was another outstanding performance for Kelly in his first true road start in an Ole Miss uniform. Kelly dazzled and

Kelly made many plays happen to extend the Ole Miss lead throughout the game, but his 73-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Cody Core early in the 4th quarter only added more magic to a euphoric night. Chased by Alabama defenders, Kelly sprinted for the line of scrimmage, looking to take off for another run. He pulled up at the last second and found Core wide open, and Core dashed for the goal line. Kelly was flagged for an illegal forward pass, however. The call was overturned

towards their section. “I was convinced he threw it behind the line,” Freeze said of the play. “Our guys upstairs were pretty confident so it was easy for us.” “This just builds confidence for us,” Kelly said. “I personally have to get better in the film room and on the field. I understand that I have to take each play and understand what each play is meant to do. Play within yourself and in the system and everything will be alright.” The wide receivers made plays for Kelly and the Rebels all night long. Kelly and Adeboyejo continued their strong relationship on the field as the pass-catcher finished with two catches for 71 yards and one score. Laquon Treadwell hauled in his first touchdown grab of the season with five catches for 80 yards. Core led the team in receiving yards with 123 yards on four catches and one touchdown.
