After suffering three heartbreaking losses this season to keep the team from reaching six wins, Ole Miss used 24 second-half points to run away with a 41-24 win against rival Mississippi State in the annual Egg Bowl to clinch bowl eligibility and snap a three-year losing streak to the Bulldogs. BY MATT SIGLER mcsigler@go.olemiss.edu

It was a crazy scene inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Saturday night as Ole Miss fans celebrated the Rebels’ 41-24 win in the Egg Bowl over Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), which snapped the Bulldogs’ three-game winning streak in the series. Students rushed the field after the win and surrounded players, coaches and the Golden Egg trophy. “The feeling was unreal,” redshirt freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche said. “The THOMAS GRANING | The Daily Mississippian

Well, it’s business as usual with a case of the Mondays. The semester’s end has come and we’ve only a bit further to go. Whether or not you’ve utilized your Thanksgiving time wisely flows as water under a bridge. Now, the proving grounds are here and despite our eventful fall let us finish strong. Over the next two weeks letter grades can be made and lost by your choices. For the young ones, I hope that you’ve acclimatized well and, as you enter the gauntlet, don’t refrain for fear or worry to ask us veterans for advice on these two weeks. deficiency. But, the last thing you need is getting zonked on an excess of energy supplements and chattering at a table in the library like a sewing machine. I’ve been there before so consider it my two cents. The stress endured over these two weeks can cripple steel, don’t lose focus. For the veterans, you’ve done this final exam shuffle enough to know. You don’t need me to rehash the basics like you’re Billy Madison. Keep your head up and remember that set examples have lasting impressions. For the faculty, staff and administration: would it be ‘hypothetically’ possible to give us all answer keys for the finals? No, you say--well, I tried. cussions, thank you all for the invested interests and helpfulness provided for us in our education. I also can’t leave out the blue collars here at our campus for the continuous hardwork they’ve put in this semester. Truly, it is a special talent to have to put up with us students sometimes. I know that we are not always as appreciative with our actions as we could be. But if it weren’t for that blue collar force, our campus (our ship) would not leave port. Going along with that we can’t forget to offer our appreciation to the city of Oxford in general. It is a wonderful and helpful community that provides a strong cultural backdrop for the university. Drones: War without rules

BY BRITTANY SHARKY brittsharkey@gmail.com

In President Obama’s first term, 300 drone strikes killed an estimated 2,500 people. Drone strikes are a powerful tool in the war on terror, but they are also a tool without rules. The New York Times reported yesterday that in the weeks before the presidential election, the Obama administration was scrambling to create guidelines for the use of drones. These rules were to be created in case Obama wasn’t re-elected; the new president would then have a clear set of directives to determine when the use of drone strikes was allowed. While Obama’s re-election should have seen this issue put on the back burner, the resignation of CIA director David Petraeus in the wake of his adultery scandal may bring this issue back to the forefront. For the third time in his presidency, President Obama has the task of appointing a new director for the CIA. This director will play a large role in shaping the United States’ policy on the use of drone strikes. The first U.S. drone strikes

began in 2002 against targets in Afghanistan. Combining intelligence with technology, drones are able to strike specific targets with accuracy and precision, while causing minimal collateral damage. These strikes are also carried out with no danger to our own troops. It’s easy to see why they are perceived as the new face of modern warfare. The U.S. has justified the use of drones by relying on the law of war. Because the U.S. is at war with terrorists who pose a threat to the country, whatever measures are necessary to quash those threats are justifiable, including the use of drone strikes. This is a total reversal of policy from when the U.S. criticized Israel’s use of drones to take out likely terrorists in foreign territories. There is a great deal of international skepticism about

the justifications for the use of drones in the war on terror. The United Nations has announced its plans to start an investigation into the U.S.’s use of drones next year. The U.N. has recognized that there are no rules in the international sphere governing the use of drones and that the U.S. is likely to create those rules through its actions. The war on terror is far from the traditional conception of war, and yet we began fighting it like it was. Drone strikes are an evolution from that traditional conception of war and utilize the best strengths of our military, intelligence and technology. However, President Obama ran on a platform of ending questionable practices in fighting the war on terror. He called for the closing of Guantanamo Bay and the end of “enhanced interrogations,” or

ting the precedent for the rest of the world. Currently, that precedent is that it is acceptable to use drone strikes to take out enemies on a foreign territory, and that has terrifying implications. Drones are a technology that has been in use for 10 years now, and for the first time in a decade, there is an attempt to regulate the use of those weapons. Hopefully it’s not too late to turn the tide and keep other countries from using our new favorite wartime technology against us.

the use of torture to elicit information from terrorist suspects. Under his presidency, the use of drones has shifted from taking out specifically targeted terrorist suspects to taking out suspected strongholds of suspected and potential terrorists. Drones are an incredibly powerful tool, but there’s no limit to who else can gain access to that tool. If we use them on foreign soil to take out targets that we have deemed are enemies, who else could use drones for the same reasons? Limiting the use of drones is absolutely necessary. We are treading down a dangerous path with the use of drones. Whether we like it not, as a nation, we are set-

Robert Nkemdiche expected to commit in two weeks Grayson High School (Ga.) defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1 football prospect, will commit to Ole Miss in two weeks, according to his brother Denzel, a redshirt freshman linebacker for the Rebels. Robert Nkemdiche was in attendance at Saturday’s 41-24 win against Mississippi State. “Robert told me personally — I don’t know if I’m supposed to say it — but he told me he’s committing (to Ole Miss) in two weeks,” Denzel Nkemdiche said. “That’s just the honest truth. That’s what he told me, and he wouldn’t lie to his brother. I’m really excited. That’s a big deal. All of this is really exciting for Ole Miss.” Robert committed to Clemson on June 14 before decommitting from the Tigers and opening his recruitment back up on Nov. 7. The current 21-player Ole Miss recruiting class is ranked from No. 19 to No. 21 in the team rankings, depending on the recruiting service. The 6-foot-5, 270-pounder from Loganville, Ga., would be the highest-ranked recruit to ever commit to Ole Miss and would boost the Rebels to a top-15 class. National Signing Day is Feb. 6.

Rebels capture bowl berth with Egg Bowl win Ole Miss became bowl eligible Saturday night, winning its sixth game of the season against in-state rival Mississippi State, 4124. The Rebels will wait to learn their bowl game destination on Sunday. BY MATT SIGLER mcsigler@go.olemiss.edu

For the first time since 2009, Ole Miss will be playing in a bowl game. The bowl berth was even sweeter this season because the Rebels (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) captured it on the last game of the year against in-state rival No. 25 Mississippi State (8-4, 4-4 SEC), with a 41-24 win Saturday night in the annual Egg Bowl. “I cannot be more proud of this group of young men and coaches,” head coach Hugh Freeze said. “I’m first and foremost happy and thrilled for them, and then secondly for our fans, administration and the people of Rebel Nation who had to go through losing the momentum in this series. I understand that was difficult. “I’ve lived it. I’ve been through it, and I know how important it is to this state and to our university, and our kids were very aware of that tonight.” Not only did the win secure postseason play for Ole Miss, it also brought the Golden Egg trophy back to Oxford after it had been in Starkville for the past three years. Things got off to a quick start in the game, with Ole Miss

striking first after barely any time had ticked off the clock in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace found senior tight end Jamal Mosley from 25 yards out, giving the Rebels an early 7-0 lead. However, the lead was short lived. On the ensuing kickoff, Jameon Lewis went 100 yards to bring Mississippi State even at 7-7. The Bulldogs would strike again and take their only lead of the game with just under three minutes left in the first quarter on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Russell to wide receiver Chad Bumphis. Ole Miss would answer with a field goal to draw within four, and later in the quarter, Wallace hit sophomore wide receiver Donte Moncrief on a 77-yard pass for a touchdown, pushing the Rebels into the lead, 17-14. Mississippi State tacked on a field goal to tie things up at 17 heading into half, but in the second half, a completely different Ole Miss team emerged from the locker room. To have the game tied at 17 at half seemed like an accomplishment for Ole Miss, which played a mediocre first half compared to its performance in the second half, when it outscored the Bulldogs 24-7. “The difference was no two

shanked punts, no three turnovers, no kickoff return, no blown coverages,” Freeze said. “If you look at the first half, the reason they scored the points they did was we blew two coverages, gave up a kickoff return, and we shanked two punts and gave them short fields. Second half, we didn’t do those things.” Freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche said the halftime message was simple. “We know how it is to be heartbroken and to lose those close games in the second half, and we aren’t going to let it happen again,” he said. “That was what was going on in the locker room.” Ole Miss began the scoring in the second half with a 41-yard field goal from senior Bryson Rose, his second of the night, giving the Rebels the lead, which they would not surrender the rest of the night.

Wallace hit Moncrief two more times for touchdowns of 21 and 16 yards, respectively, increasing the Ole Miss lead to 34-17. Wallace then found sophomore wide receiver Vince Sanders from 16 yards out early in the fourth quarter to seal the game for Ole Miss. Mississippi State would add a late touchdown to make the final 41-24, but their fate had been decided much earlier. Statistically, Ole Miss dominated the game Saturday. The Rebels gained 527 yards of total offense, which was the third time this season they eclipsed 500 yards of total offense. The total included 233 yards rushing, which was the fifth time Ole Miss eclipsed the 200-yard mark this season. Moncrief finished the night with seven catches for a career-

bright for the Rebels. Players stressed the importance of winning that sixth game to become bowl eligible and how big it is for a program going forward. “It is huge,” sophomore quarterback Bo Wallace said. “We have all these recruits here, and they wanted to see that, and they saw how awesome of an atmosphere it was. We’ll go to a bowl game and try to get momentum going into the offseason.” Nkemdiche added that the success of this season was judged on whether or not Ole Miss was able to get the win over its in-state rival to become bowl eligible. “This year being a successful year was depending on whether we made it to a bowl game or not,” Nkemdiche said. “We competed all year, competed against the best, but that’s not good enough. We needed to take the next step and practice in December, and that’s what we are going to be doing.” Now, all the Rebels can do is wait until Sunday when the bowl matchups are released to see where they end up in the bowl season. Moncrief also tied the school record with 10 touchdown receptions on the year. “It was great feeling how it felt to beat State,” Moncrief said. “This is my second time playing them. The first time they got us, and it hurt me, so I knew I had to come out and help get my team the victory because I knew they really wanted it. Our seniors needed to go to a bowl game, and I didn’t want to let them down.” Wallace also had a big night offensively, despite having a rough start to the game, throwing for 294 yards and five touchdowns. His five touchdown passes in the game tied for the third-most in school history. Wallace also moved into fourth place in school history for passing yards in a season with 2,843 yards. “I think I was clicking in the first half; I was just trying to make too many big plays,” Wallace said. “My emotions kind of got to me. and it made me make some bad decisions, but in the second half I just came out and started playing football.” Defensively, the Rebels also shined, giving up only 333 total yards to the Bulldogs, but perhaps the most noticeable stat was Mississippi State gaining only 30 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Ole Miss also intercepted Russell twice on the night. “I’m so proud of them because I told them at halftime, ‘Eleven and a half games, this is it. It could be the seniors’ last chance to put on their pads,’” defensive coordinator Dave Wommack said. “They just came out and played one snap at a time fired up, and it is a lot more fun than those other three games we lost in the last few minutes. “I just thought the second half especially we played like we were supposed to play as a team, offense, defense, kicking game.” Ole Miss heads into the bowl season, and they will find out their destination in Sunday’s selection show. Likely destinations for the Rebels include the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl in Shreveport on Dec. 28, the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville on Dec. 31, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on Dec. 31 and the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham on Jan. 5. 03 Temp. The Ole Miss men’s basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season as they defeated the Lipscomb Bison, 91-45, on Friday. It was the fourth time the Rebels had reached the 90-point plateau this season. Senior forward Murphy Holloway led the Rebels (5-0) in scoring with a season-high 23 points, and senior guard Nick Williams chipped in 14. However, it was Holloway’s play that set the tone for the Rebels, in-

cluding 12 first-half points. Holloway also led the team with eight rebounds. “I think the approach was great,” Holloway said. “We came out fired up. It’s just being active. Getting to the ball and putting it in the hoop.” Ole Miss jump on the Bisons (2-2) early in each half as the Rebels scored 31 points in the first half before Lipscomb reached double digits. Defensively, Ole Miss held Lipscomb to 12-of-49 (24.5 percent) from the floor, forced 26 turnovers and blocked nine shot,

including a season-high five from senior forward Reginald Buckner, who also finished in double figures with 10 points. Junior guard Marshall Henderson, the Rebels’ leading scorer, finished with 10, but was just 3-for14 from the field, including 2-for-12 from 3-point range Next up for the Rebels will be Rutgers (4-1) on Saturday as part of the SEC/ Big East Challenge. Tip-off from Tad Smith Coliseum is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.

AWFUL HOLIDAY GIFTS (AND WHAT TO DO) Santa is someimes awfully naughty. The DM tackles the most awful Christmas gifts and how to deal with them.

The Short Version Sometimes it is hard to hide disgust and slap out a “Thank you!”

Recommended Action: While the gift may have your identity embedded, it is not a portion of your soul. Find a friend with the same monogram or donate.

It may be that awful sweater, the ugly blanket, the knick nacks your apartment really didn’t need, a candle, or something that smells awful and vaguely resembles “lotion.” There is hope. Holiday movie picks: Going beyond ‘A Christmas Story’ While I was home for Thanksgiving I noticed that most TV stations were broadcasting basically one thing other than football: Christmas movies, a veritable smorgasbord of Christmas movies. These weren’t the good ones though; these were the bargain basement ABC Family and Lifetime original movie types. They’re made for the lowest common denominator and they suck. This did get me thinking about my favorite Christmas movies, though; the ones that really get me in the holiday spirit. I doubt I’ll be throwing you any curveballs here but if there’s something on my list you haven’t seen, maybe you can keep it in mind for when you come out on the other side of the hellish finals tunnel.

Josh Presley | joshpresley@hotmail.com

Elf (2003) From back when Will Ferrell was somewhat tolerable, “Elf” is a Christmas tradition that’s sort of snuck up on me. I’ve never really gone out of my way to watch it, it’s just that USA routinely shows the movie an average 2809 times from the last week of November to the first week of January. “Elf” is syrupy sweet and filled with Christmas spirit but also very funny. Plus, you know, Zooey Deshanel. Scrooged (1988)

And this would be my second favorite adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.” A dark-humored modern take on the story, “Scrooged” is one of those great “alternative” yuletide flicks, but it still manages that warm fuzzy feeling at the end. It’s not perfect but seeing Bill Murray play such a jerk continually pestered by increasingly obnoxious ghosts is comedic gold. His turnaround at the end may feel a little forced, but the ensuing sing-a-long is infectious.

Jingle All the Way (1996) Some movies are so bad they’re good. “Jingle All the Way” is so bad it’s awesome. What is my generation’s fascination with this movie? Perhaps it’s because we loved Arnold Schwarzenegger and watching a giant Austrian man go to great lengths to get his extremely annoying son a Turbo-Man doll for Christmas is just hilarious. Maybe it’s because we hadn’t gotten sick of Sinbad yet. Maybe it’s the late Phil Hartman at

the top of his game playing the disgustingly smarmy neighbor, Ted. Maybe it’s the completely insane ending that sees Arnold flying around with a jet-pack. Maybe it’s all of those things and more. “Jingle All the Way” was moderately successful when it was first released but has gone on to become a genuine cult holiday classic. Gremlins (1984) Sure this movie is about mean-spirited little monsters that gleefully terrorize a small

town, but it’s also very Christmasy. I really miss gaudy 80s Christmases so this one really brings back fond memories. Amid all the dark comedy and gremlin antics, there is the touching tale of friendship between a boy and his Mogwai. Die Hard (1988) It’s set at Christmas so it counts as a Christmas movie! I think more and more people are adding this to their DecemSee MOVIES, PAGE 7

Holiday shopping on a student’s budget thedmnews@gmail.com

Holiday shopping can be hard for anyone, especially for a college student with a low budget. People are always worried about getting the right gift for their girlfriend or boyfriend, their parents and their siblings. When shopping for others make sure that you are buying for them and not yourself. Often times you might find yourself wanting to buy something you like instead of what the other person would want, so be careful not to do that. Though it can be tough to buy great gifts for everyone, take note to this holiday shopping guide for help!

Getting your boyfriend or girlfriend a holiday gift can be tricky. A great idea is to buy your significant other his or her favorite television show on DVD. Another is to give is a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant for a date night. If your boyfriend or girlfriend’s favorite band has a concert coming up tickets to the show are a great gift. A great gift for a girl to give her boyfriend is tickets to his favorite sporting events. For men with significant others, jewelry is always a good route. Another great gift to give is a subscription to his or her favorite magazine. Shopping for your boyfriend or girlfriend can be

Sometimes people buy gifts that they think are funny but not everyone else does, so watch out. Parents always enjoy gifts like calendars that you can make online with different pictures for each month. Check out Minted.com for a multitude of create-your-own calendars that ship in a hurry. For those who have parents who enjoy reading, an ereader like a Kindle or Nook might be a great holiday present. For something extra, stock it in advance with their favorite books or a subscription to their favorite newspaper. For fathers, things like tools or a gift card to Home Depot can make good presents. An excellent gift for moms might be taking her to go get a manicure or a facial with you so you can spend time together while getting pampered. Other great gifts for moms are cookbooks or gift cards to places like Target. Parents will always appreciate and enjoy what their children give them so make sure it is great. Siblings can sometimes be very tough to buy presents for. Though it might not seem very personable, gift cards can make great gifts, especially for those much older or younger than you. You can buy a gift card at their favorite store, and then you don’t have to worry about getting it wrong. iTunes gift cards are always a favorite so they can pick music, movies or TV shows they want. Siblings are usually receptive to funny gifts, too. Remember when you used to get presents and play all day Christmas? Relive it with an old favorite board game or something silly. DVDs and seasons of shows are great gifts to give See BUDGET, PAGE 5

Cyber Monday likely to be busiest online sales day NEW YORK — Bye-bye Black Friday. So long Small Business Saturday. Now, it’s Cyber Monday’s turn. Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed online sales spiked on the Monday following Thanksgiving, is the next in a series of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season. It’s estimated that this year’s Cyber Monday will be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up 20 percent from last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers have ramped up their deals to get shoppers to click on their websites. Amazon.com, which is starting its Cyber Monday deals at midnight on Monday, is offering as much as 60 percent off a Panasonic VIERA 55inch TV that’s usually priced higher than $1,000. Sears is

offering $430 off a Maytag washer and dryer, each on sale for $399. And Kmart is offering 75 percent off all of its diamond earrings and $60 off a 12-in-1 multigame table on sale for $89.99. Retailers are hoping the deals will appeal to shoppers like Matt Sexton, 39, who for the first time plans to complete all of his holiday shopping online this year on his iPad tablet computer. to spend up to $4,000 this season, already shopped online on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday and found a laptop from Best Buy for $399, a $200 savings, among other deals. “The descriptions and reviews are so much better online so you can compare and price shop and for the most part get free shipping,” said Sexton, who lives in Queens, N.Y., and is a manager at a utility company. Sexton also said that it’s easier to return an online purchase to a physical store than it had been in previous years. “That helps with gifts,” he said. How well retailers fare on Cyber Monday will offer insight into Americans’ evolving shopping habits during the holiday shopping season, a time when stores can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue. With the growth in high speed Internet access and the wide use of smartphones and tablets, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when Shop.org, the digital division of trade group The National Retail Federation, introduced the term “Cyber Monday.”

“People years ago didn’t have ... connectivity to shop online at their homes. So when they went back to work after Thanksgiving they’d shop on the Monday after,” said Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org. “Now they don’t need the work computer to be able to do that.” As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday has become busy for online shopping as well. Indeed, online sales on Thanksgiving Day, traditionally not a popular day for online shopping, rose 32 percent over last year to $633 million,

according to comScore. And online sales on Black Friday were up 26 percent from the same day last year, to $1.042 billion. It was the first time online sales on Black Friday surpassed $1 billion. For the holiday season-todate, comScore found that $13.7 billion has been spent online, marking a 16 percent increase over last year. The research firm predicts that online sales will surpass 10 percent of total retail spending this holiday season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall retail sales in November and December will be up 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion But as other days become popular for online shopping, Cyber Monday may lose some of its cache. To be sure, Cyber Monday hasn’t always been the biggest online shopping day. In fact, up until three years ago, that title was historically earned by the last day shoppers could order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day changes every year, but usually falls in late December. Even though Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest shopping day this year, industry watchers say it could just be a matter of time before other days take that ranking. “Of all the benchmark spending days, Thanksgiving is growing at the fastest rate, up 128 percent over the last five years,” said Andrew Lipsman, a spokesman with comScore.

ber movie rotation. It really does have that holiday atmosphere and I can’t hear “Let It Snow” without thinking of this movie. Heck, I even watched Die Hard over the summer and still felt Christmasy. On top of being the best action

movie ever made and turning Bruce Willis into a megastar, “Die Hard” also introduced the world to Severus Snape himself, Alan Rickman. Rickman’s role in “Die Hard” continues to be ripped off by pretty much every action movie villain to this day. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989) Yeah, we don’t do that “It’s A Wonderful Life” crap at my house. This is the movie

that my family watches every Christmas. A hilarious study of how everything can go wrong, “Christmas Vacation” is a holiday classic that belongs in the same company as “Miracle On 34th Street” and “It’s A Wonderful Life.” A friend of mine once told me that she didn’t think this movie was that funny. My response was “you must come from a normal family.” For the rest of us, we can relate

to many if not most of the zany situations shown in Christmas Vacation, and most of us have at least one family member that reminds them of a character from this movie. I actually have several. A hilarious study of how everything can go wrong, Christmas Vacation is a holiday classic that belongs in the same company as Miracle On 34th Street and It’s A Wonderful

Life. So those are just some of the movies that get me in the holiday spirit (I’ll spare you my examination of how “Silent Night, Deadly Night” is a great Christmas movie) and if there’s one you haven’t see or haven’t seen in a long time then maybe you can check them out. If I missed any of your favorites then you’ll know what to ask Santa for next year.
