Election bill going back to ASB Senate floor BY ALLISON SLUSHER ajslushe@go.olemiss.edu
The Associated Student Body Judicial Council met last night for a hearing on a complaint filed against the ASB Consitution and Codes. Senator James Parrett, chair of the Governmental Operations Committee, filed a complaint regarding the use of the term “present and voting” in ASB Campus Senate Rules and ASB Code. The complaint stated that the ASB senators had taken it upon themselves to determine the meaning of the phrase. Parrett noted that this had been done at least twice. The most recent time the senate determined the meaning of the phrase was on Nov. 12. Pillow presented a bill he authored that would change the way student election campaigns are held on campus. Twentyfive senators voted in favor of the bill, 19 voted against the bill and 9 senators abstained. Parrett said he filed the complaint because “present and voting” was confusing as it
didn’t clarify how the abstention votes would be counted. “There was some confusion as to how we count votes in the senate. We were looking to clarify this,” Parrett said. “We believe we had a clear reading of it, but we weren’t following that reading, so it was necessary for us to get a determination of what the Code actually means so there is no question in the future.” The bill failed on Nov. 12 because it was decided that there were not enough votes either way to make a strong majority. Pillow thought the meaning of “present and voting” should be addressed in order to prevent any confusion in the future. “It has caused a lot of problems in the past,” Pillow said. “Some of the bills that have come forth have failed including this one that did not have a majority.” The Judicial Council ruled that abstention votes should not count as a vote of affirmation or negation. Since the judicial council has clarified how an abstention

vote should be counted, Pillow hopes to represent the bill at the tonight’s ASB Senate meeting.
“I want this to go into effect for the next elections. If this isn’t passed (Tuesday night), I’m not going to implement if
it’s passed next semester because that wouldn’t give the candidates enough time to plan and prepare.”

BCS confusion BY: TIM ABRAM
toabram@go.olemiss.edu
After arguably the wildest finish to a college football game that I have ever seen, Alabama is outside of the national BCS Championship conversation … for now. Even with the loss to Auburn, I would still contend that Alabama deserves to be in the national championship game. In what is to follow, I will break down the resumes of the three teams ranked above Alabama to distinguish whether or not they deserve to go to Pasadena. First, let’s look at Florida State. This year, Florida State has the second-highest-rated offense, led by phenom Jameis Winston. The Seminoles have averaged 53.7 points per game, while holding opponents to 11 points a game, which places the Seminole defense as the statistically best defense in the country. The Seminoles have victories over then-ranked No. 25 Maryland (they finished the season 7-5), then ranked No. 3 Clemson in a rout (51-14) and then-ranked No. 7 Miami in a blowout (4114). Florida State has defeated its opponents by an average of 42.6 points per game. However, these numbers may be inflated by the 63-0 rout of Maryland, the two T H E D A I LY

back-to-back, 56-point wins over Syracuse and Wake Forest and the 80-14 obliteration of Idaho. Florida State has not been closely challenged in a football game since the early season win over Boston College by six points. With the presumed win over No. 20 Duke this Saturday, Florida State will boast wins over four ranked teams, while having arguably the best defense and offense in the country. In my opinion, Florida State deserves its assumed spot in the BCS National Championship game. Next, let’s look at the body of work that Ohio State University has put together. Off the top, we have to mention that Ohio State has yet to lose a game under Urban Meyer. Also, Ohio State has the third-best offense in the country, putting up 48.2 points a game. In addition, Ohio State is home to the country’s second-best rushing attack. The Buckeyes average 321.3 yards per game on the ground. Ohio State’s resume does not have the list of impressive wins that I have listed for Florida State and will list for Alabama shortly. Ohio State has victories over thenranked No. 23 Wisconsin and then-ranked No. 16 Northwestern. In retrospect, the Northwestern victory is not impressive, as the Wildcats finished the season 5-7. On Saturday, the Buckeyes have the opportunity to get a signature win over a top-ten opponent in the Big Ten Championship versus Michigan State.

However, my only question about Ohio State if they win out would be: How many times can you deny a team that has had back-to-back undefeated seasons a shot in the national championship game? But due to the lack of impressive victories over superior competition, I do not believe Ohio State deserves to be in the BCS National Championship game. War Damn Eagle. Honestly, I did not begin taking Auburn seriously until after they defeated Johnny Football and the Aggies on Oct. 19. The Tigers bolster a top-five running attack coupled with a top-20 offense. Auburn holds victories over the thenranked No. 24 Ole Miss Rebels, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 25 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama. To be fair, Auburn defeated both an injury-plagued Georgia and Alabama on miracle plays. However, what counts is the final result, so speculation is no good here. Plus, if Auburn beats a No. 5 Missouri in the SEC Championship game, I will find it difficult to NOT have the Tigers in Pasadena. Keep in mind that Auburn accomplished all of this while coming off a 0-8 performance in the SEC last season. The University of Alabama is my second-favorite SEC team. Let me go ahead and put that out there before I begin. Alabama holds the second-best defense, a top-15 offense, and a top-25 rushing attack. Alabama has also held three of its oppo-

nents to zero points (Ole Miss, Arkansas and Chattanooga). Alabama holds wins over thenNo. 6 Texas A&M, then-No. 21 Ole Miss and then-No. 13 LSU. The only blemish on the resume of the Crimson Tide’s record is the legendary loss to Auburn last Saturday. I have yet to be convinced that Alabama is not the best team in the country. So, what does all of this mean? Well, for me it means that I hope both Florida State and Ohio State lose on Saturday. Even though I think Florida State deserves to be in the national championship game, I would much rather the national championship streak of the SEC remain intact. I would like to see an Auburn-Alabama rematch. If somehow this magically happens, I do not expect any 100-plus-yard missed field goal returns or coaching miscues by Nick Saban. In closing, I want to give a huge shout out to MY OLE MISS Rebels, and specifically to Bo Wallace. I am sorely disappointed in the Ole Miss fans who publicly lambasted this young man over the result of a football game. People all too quickly forget that he, too, is just a human being and he is someone’s son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew, etc. Stay strong, Bo! I look forward to a spectacular finish to the ending of the college football season. Hotty toddy! Tim Abram is a senior public policy leadership major from Horn Lake.

Suspect named in Otter assault case BY CATY CAMBRON thedmnews@gmail.com
The Austin Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for a man suspected of assaulting University of Mississippi senior Carson Otter in downtown Austin, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013. Joshua M. Ramirez, 25, has been charged with aggravated assault with severe bodily injury, a second-degree felony. His bond has been set at $10,000, according to the police department. Ramirez’s warrant was filed Tuesday, Nov. 26 in Travis County, according to the Austin Police Department website. Otter was in Austin at the time of the accident for the Ole Miss vs. Texas football game. According to the initial incident report released by the Austin Police Department,
authorities were dispatched to Trinity and East 7th streets in response to an emergency call around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 14. The report states there was a verbal disturbance between Otter and some men in a pass-

ing car. A passenger in the car, who police now believe to be Ramirez, got out of the vehicle and hit Otter once, knocking him unconscious with a skull fracture. The suspect(s) then

returned to the vehicle and left the scene. After having emergency brain surgery, Otter spent more than two weeks recovering at University Medical Center Brackenridge and at Central Texas Rehabilitation Hospital. Withdrawing from classes for the fall semester, Otter returned home to Bloomington, Ind., in early October to start physical training along with speech therapy and cognitive training. Otter is expected to return to classes at the University of Mississippi for the spring 2014 semester, according to Dean of Students Sparky Reardon. “It is evident how much he loves Ole Miss,” Reardon said. “I know that Carson’s family has been a great support to him and this development has to be encouraging as Carson continues his recuperation.”

At 7:30 p.m., Miss University 2014 Anna Beth Higginbotham and Homecoming Queen Megan McBeth will be reading several Christmas stories taking place in the Student Union Lobby. Other events include Christmas karaoke and a Movie Series featuring Elf. “Throughout the evening, attendees can participate in “Make-Your-Own” Christmas cards in the Student Union Lobby,” Nathan Darce, Coordinator of Student Activities said. “Participants will be able to create their own card and then have the option of keeping the card or having their card delivered by the Student Activities
Association to the Graceland Care Center of Oxford.” Higginbotham says she looks forward to the event because it is a great way to help those in Oxford during the holiday season. “This event is a great way to gather students and locals of Oxford for the holidays. It is a fun opportunity for students to volunteer for the community during the Christmas season.”

Recommended reading for winter lounging BY SAMANTHA ABERNATHY slaberna@go.olemiss.edu
Thanksgiving is officially over and Ole Miss students are anxiously awaiting the winter break. However, during the six weeks you are free from academic slavery, you may get a little bored with the lazy routine, but then, you are also far too committed to your couch-potato state to get up. What do you do? Here’s a solution: Read a book. You don’t know which book to read? Well, you’re in luck. Here are a few of this break’s “must-read” books: The “Divergent” series: If you enjoyed “The Hunger Games” series, you definitely need to meet Beatrice Prior of
“Divergent.” Veronica Roth’s No. 1 New York Times bestsellers, “Divergent” and “Insurgent,” will get you through the winter break, and at the end you’ll wish you had longer so you could finish “Allegiant,” the finale of the series. A tale that is sure to make you want to read it and then read it again, this book makes you feel as though you, too, just caused a revolution in the world of dystopian injustice. “The Cuckoo’s Calling”: If you are a die-hard Harry Potter fan and were sorely let down by J.K. Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy,” then you are in luck. Penned under Rowling’s pseudonym, Robert Galbraith, “The Cuckoo’s Calling” is definitely a book
to be read. This book provides very compelling characters and some of the whimsical magic of Harry Potter but is targeted to the more grown-up audience that may feel as if it has outgrown the Harry Potter stage. The story follows the death of a beautiful model and the discoveries that are made afterward. This is definitely one to read. “I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban”: This book is already very popular on campus. Many students have picked it up and decided to read about the life of this amazing young woman and have utterly enjoyed it. “This book made me realize just how lucky I am,” freshman history major Katie Lovett said. “I will definitely recommend it to anyone who has the time to read it.” This novel ultimately shows the power of education, the difference it can make and how we all should be thankful for our time at Ole Miss. “Rebecca”: If you are the type that wants to clutch a book as the plot twists tighter than your vivacious grip on its pages, pick up “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier. I kid you not, although this book starts off slow, once it hits its climax you will be hooked until the very end. The mystery and suspense in this story are through the roof. So, if you like mystery and want something that is truly riveting, Rebecca might be just what you’re looking for. “Completely loved this book,” said Kandice Clayton, a recent graduate. “Could not put it down.”
Courtesy of Mulholland Books | The Daily Mississippian
The book cover of the “The Cuckoo’s Calling.”
“A Song of Ice and Fire” series, containing “A Game of Thrones”: This series is as long as “The Lord of the Rings” series, if not longer. However, once you pick these novels up, you will not be able to put it them down. It is truly a tale of intrigue and adventure to the very end, or at least, to the end of the current novel. You will not be able to help but form a bond of some kind with the main characters. “I love this book,” senior Laura Williams said of “A
Game of Thrones.” “I could not put it down, and I do not even like to read this type of fiction.” For readers and nonreaders alike, this will be a busy holiday season. With multiple movie adaptations coming out, not to mention the recent releases adding to the evergrowing pile of books you really want to get through, we won’t have a moment to spare.

Aubrey Edie named SEC Freshman of the Week Following her record-breaking performance in Ole Miss’ victory over LSU on Wednesday night, the Southeastern Conference announced Monday that Ole Miss setter Aubrey Edie was the SEC Freshman of the Week. The Fayetteville, Ark., native passed out a career-high 61 assists Wednesday in the Rebels’ thrilling 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 16-14) victory over LSU in Ole Miss’ season finale. Edie’s 61 assists is a single-match program record at Ole Miss. In addition to her 61 assists, Edie also had a team-high and career-high tying 16 digs against the Tigers, giving her a teamhigh eight double-doubles in her rookie year. Edie’s eight doubledoubles this season was tied for the second most in the conference among rookies. Edie finished the year with 949 assists, the fourth most in Ole Miss single-season history during the rally scoring era, and the most ever by a freshman.

to lead this program,” Getzin said. “I’m proud of the success we experienced in our time here. I believe we are leaving this program in a great position, and I’m certain they will be successful for many years to come.” Getzin came to Ole Miss in January 2002 and guided the program to its first three NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006, 2007 and 2010. Twice named SEC Coach of the Year, Getzin recorded a 159-199 mark with the Rebels and was 80-142 in conference play. “Our goals are to be much more competitive in the sport of volleyball, and a national search will begin immediately,” Johnson said.

OXFORD, Miss. – After 12 years of guiding the Ole Miss volleyball team, head coach Joe Getzin will not be retained for the 2014 season, Director of Athletics Ross Bjork announced Monday. “We appreciate the leadership that Joe has provided to our program during his 12 years,” said Lynnette Johnson, Ole Miss Executive Associate A.D. “Joe is a good man, and we wish him and his family all the best.” The Rebels posted a 14-17 mark this season, including a 4-14 mark in Southeastern Conference play. It marked the program’s third straight losing season. “I want to thank the administration, both past and present, for the opportunity

SEC Bowl Outlook BY MATT SIGLER mcsigler@go.olemiss.edu
It seems like just yesterday the college football season was kicking off. Now, we are staring at conference championship games and everyone’s favorite thing to do besides pick winners: guess who is going to what bowl. Despite everyone thinking they know exactly where their team will be heading this postseason, a few expert sources are taking a crack at it and may have a few surprises in store for fans. The Southeastern Conference has 10 teams that are bowl eligible, and here is where the experts anticipate them going. Missouri (11-1, 7-1 SEC) Missouri still has to face Auburn in the conference title game, and, depending upon the results of that, things may change.
