The University of Mississippi inducted 10 students into the 2021 Hall of Fame in person on Friday, April 9, one of the most prestigious honors a UM student can receive. The inductees were selected by a committee in accordance with policy developed by the Associated Student Body. Selections are based on outstanding contributions in all aspects of campus life. This year’s Hall of Fame members included Shelby D’Amico, a public policy leadership major; Harrison McKinnis, a chemical engineering major; Robert Wasson, a chemical engineering major, all from Madison; Victoria Green, a pharmaceutical sciences major from Canton; Asia Harden, an integrated marketing communications major from Greenville, MS; Swetha Manivannan, an international studies and spanish major from Collierville, TN; Joshua Mannery, a political science major from Jackson; Gianna Schuetz, a managerial finance and theatre arts major from Huntsville, Alabama; and Robert “Cade” Slaughter, a public policy leadership and integrated marketing communications major
and Madison Thornton, a public policy leadership and biological sciences major, both from Hattiesburg. All of the inductees are members of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Brent Marsh, assistant vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students, said that 2021 inductees are individuals who have positively impacted the campus community by being “remarkable leaders, learners and community servants.” “These 10 students were humble and gracious in their acceptance, which reinforced that the committee made great decisions in accepting them,” Marsh said. “These are students who excel academically, serve their communities and take on leadership roles - not to add another line to their resumes, but to make a difference in the world around them.” Schuetz accredits her accomplishments to her teachers, advisors, administrators and peers for helping her become the person she is today. “I am humbled to be recognized for this award alongside nine other amazing individuals and some of my dearest friends,” Schuetz said. “The University of Mississippi has given me so much and I will forever be grateful.”

Ten students from the class of 2021 were selected by committee for induction into the University of Mississippi’s Hall of Fame. Green believes this honor would not have been possible if she did not have the love and support of the people in her life. “Being inducted into the University of Mississippi’s Hall of Fame is a moment that I will cherish forever,” Green said. “Without God, my family, friends, professors and everyone else I’ve encountered the past four years of my collegiate experience, this opportunity

Class of 2021 seniors reflect on graduation ceremonies CAROLINE BEACH
thedmnews@gmail.com
As the class of 2021 at the University of Mississippi trades their school clothes for a cap and gown this week for graduation, the seniors are having mixed feelings over their graduation and the extenuating circumstances regarding it. In adherence to the safety measures of the university, this year’s graduation will be divided by academic school, location, varying sessions and time slots. The ceremony – limited to a small number of family and friends – will also require each person in attendance to respect social
distancing boundaries and wear a face mask. Seniors Ariel Riley and Austin Newcomb are among the thousands of students preparing to begin their journey outside of the University. Austin Newcomb, an integrated marketing communications major, has participated in several organizations during his time at the university . He has served as co-director of special events and public relations for the Student Activities Association, an MPower leader, an Orientation leader, an Apex leader and more. “This year has been a challenge for a lot of people,”
Newcomb said. “Holding leadership positions was difficult.” While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted students in a variety of ways, Newcomb has faced the unfortunate ramifications of a viral disease. Alongside the loss of an internship in Ireland, he missed almost all the senior year traditions his preceding classes enjoyed. As Newcomb approaches his graduation session on Saturday at 7 p.m., he is filled with a mix of excitement and disappointment. While the university is working hard to ensure the best graduation experience possible under the weight of a mass pandemic,

Newcomb said he can feel the loss of tradition. “I do not think I will be able to experience what I always pictured my graduation to be,” Newcomb said. Newcomb will return to Oxford in the fall to begin his two years of graduate school. While obtaining his master’s in clinical mental health counseling, he will work as a graduate assistant for the School of Education. He said he is filled with excitement at the idea of returning to a normal university environment and hopefully having the graduation of his dreams in two years. Disappointment and frustration from the longlasting effects of COVID-19 seem to be the general consensus among this year’s graduating class. Riley, a biological sciences major, said that she is also filled

with mixed emotions as her graduation date approaches. She will be attending Texas A&M University-Commerce this fall. In her short four years at the University of Mississippi, Riley has been an orientation leader, been a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, attended MPower, been part of The Pride of the South marching band and more. Like many other students, Riley’s college journey was altered drastically by the pandemic. Shortly after joining Pi Beta Phi during her junior year, the COVID-19 pandemic began. Despite the many challenges she has faced this past year-and-a-half, Riley remains excited and optimistic about graduation. “I feel I will have the best graduation possible in the current national situation,” Riley said.

OPINION An ASB President’s farewell address
JOSHUA MANNERY
thedmopinion@gmail.com
What has fascinated me the most about Ole Miss is the sheer amount of variety in our student experience. As Associated Student Body President, I have had the privilege to witness everything from the innovation of organizations like the Student Activities Association and the United Nations Children’s Fund, to the unwavering resilience of the Ole Miss Vietnamese American Student Association and the Black Student Union. I’ve heard the complaints, the successes, the failures and the humanity of much of the student body, all of which I can’t truly do justice in 400 words. These are the aspects of UM that I have come to love the most and that I will miss dearly. This campus is bursting at the seams with some of the most authentic and
compassionate people in the world. If I am able to make one last request for anyone willing to listen, it would be this: an increased focus on fellowship. While we still have so much work left to complete in areas like DEI and communication, what has surprised me the most is that this institution, from administration down to students, isn’t emphasizing community. We pride ourselves on being a “UM Family,” yet what do we have to illustrate that notion? Individually, our communities are robust and flourishing. Imagine then what would happen if there was an increased push for collaboration and intimacy across these groups? What would more partnership between FSL chapter organizations, ASB and multicultural organizations look like? Or tangible ways for

What if, when events occur that challenge the place of minority groups on campus, the UM community affirmed its members rather than forcing those targeted groups to defend their existence? These are but a small fraction of the methods that can unite this campus community in ways we have not tapped into before. I hope that my ask for fellowship isn’t taken as an indictment, but as recommendations from a has-been on the way out. The University of Mississippi has invested in me in ways I never imagined, and saying goodbye to it is tough. It really is. But, “The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.” So, one last time, farewell UM, and when we meet again, I can’t wait to meet the new you.

OPINION A farewell to The Daily Mississippian HADLEY HITSON
thedmopinion@gmail.com
Over my past three years working at The Daily Mississippian, I’ve been told that I hate a lot of things I love. Greek life, the Associated Student Body, the School of Journalism and New Media and the University of Mississippi in general are just a few examples. Any time I would hold these institutions accountable to their promises, purposes or values, at least a few naysayers would come forward on social media — or occasionally, in person — to tell me I was wrong. I was wrong for asking those questions, for devoting space
to negative opinions and for painting the university in a bad light. That’s the thing, though. The news articles published in The Daily Mississippian don’t aim to paint any of these organizations in a good or a bad light — only a truthful one. When I write about the pay of Greek house workers or highlight the struggles of minorities on campus, I do it because I love this university. And when you love something, why would you not want it to be a place of progress? Why would you not want to examine your organization for the good and the bad with the goal of making it the best it can be? Still, with all of the
criticism and all of the anger, interacting with Oxford and the UM campus as a DM reporter has changed my perspective. This campus showed me that a 114-year-old Confederate monument can move. Law students can fight for the release of ICE detainees. Black student leaders can convince a university with a violent racial history to commit to reconciliation. And Mississippians can enact change. When I began working at the paper in January 2018, my plan was to report on a few campus events, get some clips for my portfolio and make a little money while doing it. Instead, I’m leaving
the DM office for the last time with so much more. My coworkers have become my friends and mentors, my understanding of why Mississippi is important has grown immensely and I feel like the work I have done here has made a difference. It has been nothing short of a privilege to report for this award-winning paper on a campus community
that refuses to stop pushing for change. I’ve loved every minute. Hadley Hitson is a journalism major from Birmingham and the outgoing managing editor of The Daily Mississippian. Jacob Meyers will take over as managing editor for the 2021-2022 school year.
