PAGE 2 | GRADUATION 2023
DEAR OLE MISS, DEAR OLE MISS,
Thank you for the best four years of my life.
As an almost college graduate, I can confidently say that this university has offered me a lot of unique opportunities that I likely wouldn’t receive anywhere else. It allowed me to find the intersection of things I’m interested in through my majors. It allowed me to help other students choose the University of Mississippi through Ole Miss ambassadors and get students to read a newspaper, some for the first time, through The Daily Mississippian. It allowed me to join the best sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and meet some of my closest friends.
For all of those things and more, thank you Ole Miss.
This journey wasn’t always easy. My mom wasn’t here flicking on the light to tell me to go to class. My professors weren’t reminding me to submit my homework by 11:59. It was years of learning how to be on my own. It was consistently juggling school work,
homework, organizations and their thousands of meetings. It was navigating a social life alongside a million other tasks. It was learning how to balance it all. What I can say is this: it has all been worth it.
Academics have obviously been important, but the real value of this experience has been the relationships and connections I’ve made. When I needed an internship, job, or recommendation, I always knew who to call and that I could call them at any time. The faculty and staff here have been the biggest help to me, and I couldn’t be more appreciative.
The absolute best thing about this experience is that I was able to find my people. I can’t begin to tell you how significant it was when I finally found the people who became my biggest supporters and much needed critics. These are the people who’ll be by my side for a lifetime, and I have Ole Miss to thank for those connections.
I can’t put into words how
happy I am that I chose to go to college, and specifically that I chose the University of Mississippi. It’s the university that provided a path for me to study abroad in Ghana. It’s the university that helped me win a Fulbright Award to teach abroad in Zambia and the university that prepared me to continue my education at Harvard University.
The University of Mississippi has had a significant impact on my life. Everything I wanted out of college, I received at this university. Ole Miss became my home away from home. When I came here, I didn’t know a single soul. Now, I feel like I know almost everyone at the university. When I came here, I didn’t know much about this campus. Now, I know more about this campus than I should (thank you ambassadors and orientation). This has been the experience of a lifetime. I’ll graduate from the Harvard of the South and go to Harvard. But, first: Zambia. Thank you, Ole Miss.
