Horticulture Building Is New Addition To Fairgrounds By LAINE GRIFFIN Daily News-Record

H

ARRISONBURG – Construction for the new horticulture building at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds is almost complete. Rebecca Holloway, the general manager for the Rockingham County Fair, has been working with fair vol-

unteers to rebuild the horticulture building, which houses vegetables, fruits, flowers and flower crops, ever since she took on her role as the general manager in January. But conversations became serious about the project in March, and by June 1, the building was being torn down. The old horticulture building was one of the oldest buildings on the

fairgrounds and had also been used on the old fairgrounds, Holloway said, adding that it had been around for over 39 years. “The last few years we were using it, we had been renting air conditioning units to put inside the building to make it cooler, but it’s gotten hotter and hotter every year,” she said. With the Valley having weather in the 80s and up in to the upper 90s this summer, Holloway recommended it was time to build a new horticulture building. The building, which is about 24 feet longer than the last with its dimensions being 40-by-124-feet, had a total cost of $107,000.

She said Tim Mines, who serves as a volunteer project manager for the fairgrounds, raised the money for the new building with the help of Charlie Whetzel, Jeff Germroth, and a few others. The building had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 7, at 10 a.m. Holloway said there are several other potential projects the fair has for the future, such as a new barn for animal showings. “We also are having ventilation issues in our main showing area barn, but that will be more of a costly project,” she said. “I’d like to see that we get working on that soon but we aren’t sure that will happen.”

Carnival Lights & Country Nights A letter from the Fair General Manager

Rebecca Holloway Rockingham County Fair General Manager

I have spent many “Carnival Lights and Country Nights” here at the Rockingham County Fair since 1991. A lot has changed since my first grand champion steer at the Rockingham County Fair in 1993, but my involvement in the Rockingham County Fair has only increased. From Livestock Exhibitor, to Ag Teacher and Fair Board Member, and most recently Fair Manager, I can ensure you that my heart is in the Rockingham County Fair. The opening of the new horticulture building will just be one highlight of the week, please make sure you plan to stop by and see the newest building on the grounds. The Carnival Lights will light up our sky as our Country Nights

will be filled with livestock shows, Grandstand Events that include Rafter Z Rodeo, Morgan Wallen, Aaron Lewis, Scotty McCreery, Demo Derby, and Tractor Pull; along with our “free” grounds entertainment like Mike Walker, Krossing Jordan, Kandu Magic Show, and much more. The activities do not end there, the Harrisonburg Ford Arena will be packed with “free” events the whole week. I am excited as we prepare for the 2019 Rockingham County Fair to work with all the volunteers, community organizations, local businesses, and the 4-H and FFA members that makes our county fair the BEST in the STATE! Mark it on your calendars

to celebrate “Carnival Lights and Country Nights” at the Rockingham County Fair August 12 – 17, 2019!

Rebecca (Begoon) Holloway flashes one of her ribbons from her days of showing at the Rockingham County Fair.

PRE-FAIR, ONE-DAY EVENTS PRE-FAIR ACTIVITIES SUNDAY, AUGUST 11

7:00 pm Free Gospel Sing Concert- HarrisonburgAutoMall.com Tent- Sponsored by: WBTX, WLR Jeff & Sheri Easter For Jeff and Sheri, gospel music is genetically programmed into their DNA. As members of acclaimed musical families Jeff’s father is one of the Easter Brothers and Sheri’s mother is a member of The Lewis Family, they grew up surrounded by the sound of people praising God through their musical gifts. Apart from their frequent appearances on the Gaither Homecoming tour and videos, Jeff & Sheri have a fairly heavy touring schedule of their own. “When we perform, we want people to leave a little different than when they came in,” Sheri explains. “We want them to have a great time smiling, laughing, crying and healing. We want them to know God loves them and that He is in control.”

Larry DeLawder as Barney Fife Do you remember one of America’s favorite TV Show’s in the early 1960’s, “The Andy Griffith Show”? And do you remember Barney Fife, the bumbling but dedicated deputy in that sleepy little town of Mayberry, N.C.? We all looked forward each week to see just what Barney was up to. Well this is your opportunity to experience “Barney’s” special humor again. From Branson, Mo., you will not want to miss this performance with Larry DeLawder as he impersonates the unforgettable Barney Fife of the Andy Griffith Show. Larry is of the same size and stature as Barney and has perfected all of Barney’s mannerisms so well you will think he really is Barney.
