Rebecca Holloway grew up with the farm. Her older brother and older sister had been showing animals before she was able to. Her parents were involved in the fair as well.
Holloway had one “normal” summer fair before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020.
Over the years Sadie has noticed that the fair has added more events throughout the year, not just during fair week, which has drawn more people to the fair when it happens annually.
Holloway hopes to be on the youth committee when he gets older. Like Begoon, Wyatt has seen the facilities at the fairgrounds. He hopes in the future to see the fair offer more of their sales events on the weekend of fair week to give owners and sellers more time to show their animals.
When Holloway was old enough to begin showing animals herself at 11, it was a nobrainer. She showed market hogs and market steers and continued as a volunteer after she aged out of showing animals.

“The challenge has been keeping everything going,” she said. The fair took place in 2020 but it was a pared-down occasion for health and safety reasons. But everything is pretty much back to how it was in 2019, Holloway said. The fair has had many presidents and managers in its almost 75-year history and has grown exponentially since its first three-day run.
Sadie Houff is a rising eighth-grader and has been showing goats and volunteering with the fair since she was 8 years old. When she is older she hopes to get more involved with the fair and wants to pursue a career in agriculture.
The first fair in 1949 made a profit of approximately $130 and there were about 5,000 people in attendance, according to the fair website. From 1950 to 1951, the Rockingham County Fair was four days long; from 1952 to 1963, five days long; and since 1964, the fair has run for six days. The event is scheduled to begin on the third Monday of August each year. It will begin on Aug. 15 this year.
In two years the Rockingham County Fair will reach a milestone -- 75 years since the first time it was held at Linville-Edom High School north of Harrisonburg from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, 1949. Many people have helped shape the fair along the way and the fair itself has gone through many changes over the last almost 75 years. But who will take over the fair when the current manager, Rebecca Holloway, and board members pass the torch? Only time will answer those questions, but there are already youth who have been involved in the fair since they were children, have a family history of fair involvement, have an interest in the future of the fair, or all of the above.
Wyatt Holloway is Holloway’s son and a rising freshman at East Rockingham High School. Holloway has been showing lambs and steers since he was 8 years old. Besides that he comes to the fairgrounds on a regular basis to help with landscaping and whatever else they need.

Delanee Holloway is a rising fifth-grader at South River Elementary School and this is her second summer showing goats. Holloway, who is also the daughter of Rebecca Holloway, said she’s not sure what she wants to do with the fair when she gets older but that she wants to stay involved and wants to go to Virginia Tech to study something involving agriculture.
Courtney Begoon will be a freshman at Virginia Tech this fall and has been showing lambs, hogs and steers at the Rockingham County Fair since she was 10 years old. She is on the youth and education committee for the fair. As part of the youth and education committee, Begoon comes up with ways to engage youth in what is going on with the fair. Over the years Begoon said she has seen the fair change mostly in the facilities. The facilities have grown and improved.
In 1980 the first fair was conducted at the current location and included a 21,000-squarefoot exhibit hall, a barn complex with more than 80,000 square feet providing space for hundreds of hogs, sheep, goats, beef and dairy cattle. It also included a farm museum, a building for horticulture, flowers and farm crop displays, and numerous food concession buildings operated by local civic organizations, according to the fair website.A3,200-square-foot Virginia Poultry Industry Center, including a museum and animal display facility, have been added to the assets of the property.Contact Megan Williams at 574-6272 or mwilliams@dnronline.com. “It’s just something we all grew up with,” she said. Her career path has also been formed by the fair and agriculture. She was an agriculture teacher at Spotswood High School and East Rockingham High School before applying for the job as fair manager in 2018. Holloway had served on the fair board from 2004 until 2012 with one year off to have a baby, so when the job to manage the fair came open she knew what it entailed. But still, there has been a learning curve. “My heart has always been in that barn,” Holloway said of where the livestock shows are held during the fair. “I didn’t have to learn about that.”But other aspects of the fair such as the vendors and grandstand events took some time to figure out. However, Holloway will be the first to tell you that volunteers handle much of that aspect of the fair. It takes about 500 volunteers to run the fair when everything is said and done. For Rebecca Holloway, the Rockingham County Fair general manager, while working the six days of the fair, one thing she doesn’t have to worry about is packing lunch, breakfast or dinner.“Ihave a go-to from each booth,” Holloway said. “Chicken tenders, hand-cut french fries, fried pickles, mozzarella sticks. You can get anything.”Takingplace Aug. 15 to 20, the Rockingham County Fair is a renowned agricultural fair, but food, snacks and beverage options are no afterthought, with 10-plus food booths sprinkled throughout the the center of the fairgrounds, between the barn complex and the Exhibit Hall.Much of the proceeds from the sale of treats — which include steak and cheese subs, hot dogs, fried chicken, hand-cut fries and ribeye steak sandwiches -- go to groups’ annual fundraising efforts. Each booth is staffed by volunteers from a different community group. For early risers, the Rockingham County 4-H Food Pavilion will have sausage, bacon and Western ham biscuits, gravy, orange juice and more, located near the barn complex, with the sounds of roosters crowing included in the ticket price.
Once the sun is a little higher in the sky, local FFA chapters will offer a mouthwatering menu including FFA-raised beef hamburgers and cheeseburgers at the center of the festival grounds, while the Cross Keys-Mill Creek food booth will have fresh-squeezed lemonade, chicken tenders with fries and fried chicken legs near the barn complex.

Another great catch of fair food, the Broadway-Timberville food booth will have fried catfish sandwiches and platters served with coleslaw and french fries near the Exhibit Hall. While the main “diet” at the Rockingham County Fair might be diet soda, the Rockingham County 4-H Food Pavilion will have tossed garden salads with chicken strips, taco salad and salad wraps, according to Holloway. “After that, you’re done. There’s no other healthy food,” Holloway said. “[Fair] food is meant to be fried.” For those with a sweet tooth, the 4-H Food Pavilion will have milkshakes, and the Young Farmers booth will have ice cream bowls and root beer floats. The McGaheysville booth will focus on a fair classic funnel cake. The vendors pay 18% of revenue to the fair, which pays for permitting and fees for selling food, Holloway said. The organizations keep the rest of the money . Holloway doesn’t have just one favorite thing from the fair — she has a list of favorite foods that usually come back each year. “I’m here for six days, so I’ve got to plan accordingly,” Holloway said. Also participating in this year’s Rockingham County Fair demolition derby is Trenton Knight, 31, of Timberville. Participating in the demolition derby is a family affair, he said, and he started when he was 15 years old. “It’s a lot of work and money. ... We pretty much modify the whole car,” he said. He said he’ll be riding a 1964 Ford Galaxy Wagon he got from his stepdad in the pro stock class. It took him about three months to build the car. Finding the time to build the cars can be challenging, as it can get time-consuming with other responsibilities, he said. But participating in the demolition derby is a fun thing, Knight said. His family comes to watch him at the county fair, and other competitors are supportive as well. “Everyone’s up to help others, even though they want to tear you up,” he said with a laugh.

While preparation is different for each class, Corral said it takes about five months to get a car ready for the derby.Corral, who also runs in competitions in Shenandoah County and Luray, said there’s nothing like running at the Rockingham County Fair.“It’s a different feeling. It’s your hometown crowd,” he said. “Once you get through the first set, the nerves go away and you’re ready to go.”For Ricky Simon Jr., of Grottoes, the thrill of driving and the adrenaline rush are what make it all worth it. “What I enjoy, more so than running, is meeting new people,” Simon, 33, said. “We all have a love for the same thing.”

“I spend time in the shop with my dad and uncle,” Corral said. “I’ve learned to become better every year and have learned from my mistakes and what I did wrong.”
Worth all of the time, effort and money
Corral, 18, of Broadway, is one of the derby drivers in this year’s demolition derby at the Rockingham County Fair. The annual auto destruction competition is Aug. 19 at 8 Corralp.m. said he’s been running in the derby for the past couple of years, and grew up watching family members participate in the events.

Jarred Cline, 20, of Tenth Legion, said the adrenaline rush and excitement drivers get before the Rockingham County Fair’s demolition derby can’t be described. Cline said he’s been riding since he was 17, after seeing how much fun his dad and brother had while participating.“Themost enjoyable part is building the car,” he said. Cline said he’ll be driving a 1976 Lincoln he purchased outside of Winchester in the derby’s pro stock class. In the pro stock class, riders can do more welding to their car than in the wire class, Cline said. “Everything we run ... we pretty much build it all,” he said. “It’s lots of headache and time going into the car, but it’s all so fun and enjoyable.”
Simon said those who participate in demolition derbies are like a “brotherhood,” having similar interests to destroy things, but are able to hang out and have fun afterward. He said the friends he’s made while running, as well as his family and some sponsors, have supported him since he started competing in 2005. He got involved in demolition derbies from watching his uncle, who started in 1993, participate in them. This year, Simon said he plans to run a 1999 Ford Crown Vic -- a former police vehicle that he found on Facebook marketplace -- in the wire class division. He’s been in other competitions in Maryland, Pennsylvania and South Carolina, but running in front of the hometown crowd is classic, he said. “Every year, people always ask, ‘Are you doing it this year?’” he said. “People just love it.”
Last year, Corral placed first in the full-size wire stock derby at the fair. At the Rockingham County Fair’s derby, drivers are classified in different classes based on engine size and improvements to their car. In Corral’s class, cars could be welded for driver safety, but not to strengthen the overall car. “It’s a pretty simple, easy build,” he said.
All of the time, effort and money is worth it, says Antonio Corral, as he works on his 1987 Ford Crown Vic, just to destroy it in a couple of weeks.
