Since you’ve been gone
Harrisonburg, Va.
City shops, eateries open and close throughout summer
By SHELBY MERTENS Daily News-Record
In the three months since students left college campuses and the Harrisonburg community, restaurants and retail shops have opened and closed. Things have changed. To keep you up to speed with what’s new in Harrisonburg, here what’s been happening since you’ve been gone:
Olive Garden Just as students were leaving in May, the long-awaited Olive Garden opened its doors on May 22 at 45 Burgess Road, taking the place of the former Best Western Harrisonburg Inn, which was demolished to make way for the Italian chain. Since then, Olive Garden mania has caused an increase in traffic along U.S. 33 (East Market Street).
Sipe’s Restaurant and Bar Not far from Olive Garden, a new sports bar moved into the old Boston Beanery, which closed earlier this year. Sipe’s Restaurant and Bar, located in the shopping center at 1625 E. Market St., opened the last week of June. Sipe’s serves the usual bar food, including burgers, sandwiches, hot wings, nachos and fried appetizers. The bar keeps 18 beers on draft. The restaurant has dozens of TV screens, a Golden Tee golf machine and live music on Thursdays.
Agora Downtown Market For those looking to do a little more shopping this fall, the former Wine Bros. building downtown was renovated into an open-space market over the summer. The market currently has six businesses: Heartworn Vintage, The Isle Co., Mandy’s Candy, Broad Porch Coffee Co., New Creation, 8Bit Oasis Gaming and the newest addition, Wooden Trout Art Gallery. Agora Downtown Market is located at 165 S. Main St.

and art books, as well as board games and card games. Meridian Books and Games is located at 61 Court Square.
WithSimplicity on the move WithSimplicity, the beauty and makeup boutique that opened last summer in a trailer in the parking lot next to Jack Brown’s, announced in July that it is moving to a bigger, brick and mortar store at 108 S. Main St., next to Shirley’s Popcorn.

Students looking to explore outside of Harrisonburg’s city limits should know about Cafe 33, which opened late last spring along U.S. 33. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, in addition to brunch on Sundays. The menu includes burgers, sandwiches and appetizers like southwest egg rolls, quesadillas, beef sliders and battered cheese sticks. Cafe 33 specializes in “off the wall” burgers (Ask about the Triple Threat.) Cafe 33 is located at 5471 Spotswood Trail. Contact Shelby Mertens at 574-6274, @DNR_smertens or smertens@dnronline.com

Harrisonburg no stranger to trivia with events abound By JUSTIN McILWEE Daily News-Record
As classes begin and stress levels start to rise through the roof, students are always looking for something to do to blow off a little steam. In the last few years, the downtown area of Harrisonburg has exploded with bars, breweries and restaurants. One other form of entertainment that’s also seen a boom in popularity is trivia. Whether people play with a date or bring their nine closest friends, the combination of book smarts and pop culture knowledge are formida-
ble traits for anyone hoping to take home that night’s prize. Here are some local places students and residents alike can frequent to show off their mad Jeopardy-like skills:
Brothers Craft Brewing After a long weekend of studying or relaxing, students and families can head to Brothers and partake in their Monday night trivia special. Greg Williams runs the trivia, and it starts at 7:30 p.m. While it is a brewery, there isn’t an age limit on who can play, but no underage drinking is allowed. People can play in a team
or can elect to play by themselves. It is free to play, and Brothers offers a discount of $1 off drafts to participants. Contestants will be treated to four rounds, with four questions each followed by a bonus round, and then a bonus round with an activity/game/challenge for a prize. After the rounds, if you’re feeling frisky, you may wager points final Jeopardy style. The winner is playing for a $30 gift card to the brewery. Williams, who comes up with the questions himself, just wants to make sure that trivia is keeping people’s attention and giving people

of all ages something to do on a weeknight. “I try to change up the themes pretty regularly, keep it interesting,” he said. “It’s not just a bunch of random stuff. It’s relevant to things that are going on. I spread out the breadth of the questions so they’re not all just directed at people in their 20s, or older people; anybody can come in and play.”

Buffalo Wild Wings BDubs is the place to be on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. if you’re looking for some midweek entertainment. David Jordan runs what he calls “Trivia Pop,” a game designed specifically for Buffalo Wild Wings. Manager Shannon Zimmerman said he “designed it for BDubs in mind that, it doesn’t have to be everything is completely about trivia,” she said. “We also have sports games and other stuff going on, so you can be here with your friends, you can talk to each other, you can still hear each other,

but you can look at one of the TVs and play trivia at the same time.” Zimmerman explained that BDubs averages about 35 teams a week, and as it is a family friendly restaurant, there is no size or age limit on the trivia teams. Trivia lasts a little over two hours with six normal rounds and an extra bonus round, consisting of identifying pictures placed on the screen. There are three prizes handed out at the end of the night, with first place winning a $50 gift certificate to BDubs, second place gets a $30 gift certificate and third place gets a $20 gift certificate. Jordan comes up with the questions himself and varies the questions from round to round. Zimmerman said that one of the best ways she’s seen people play is to bring a group with multifaceted knowledge sets. “It’s kind of just a crap shoot; you don’t know what you’re gonna get,” she said. “You can tell the teams that have done this a lot bring in a lot of well rounded teams. They’ll be like, ‘Oh, she’s really good at pop culture, she’s really good at history.’ I think it just brings in a good dynamic and diverse group of people.

Gests participate in a Tuesday night trivia at Clementine in 2013.
One of the more popular trivia places in Harrisonburg is Clementine. Readers of the Daily News-Record and Rocktown Weekly voted it Best Trivia Night in the 2017 Best of the Valley survey, and in terms of players, it’s easy to see why. Clementine draws around 150 people for trivia nights, which is held every Tuesday starting at 9 p.m. In a previous DN-R article, Clementine manager Luke Watson said trivia started taking off once their hosts were brought in. “Once Jody Dodson took over two

Getting in the spirit
Harrisonburg, Va.
Trail outlines wineries, breweries and more throughout the Valley Staff Report
For those 21 and older, the Shenandoah Valley is ripe with vineyards, cideries and other drink makers. Students who’ve spent some years in Harrisonburg may be well acquainted with a landscape that includes Three Notch’d Brewing Co. and CrossKeys Vineyards. But even those with experience may not know the 30-plus destinations within a 60-mile stretch north of the city. Each location is perfect for a day trip, spending time with family or, in some cases, an event space for fundraisers and clubs. Check out a couple of our favorites:
North Mountain Vineyard/Winery With 35 years in business and an original owner who worked for NASA, North Mountain’s story is as fascinating as its product. Current owners Brad Foster and Krista Jackson-Foster serve 12-15 varieties of wine — including Rieslings and a Virginia Apple Wine — on a picturesque vineyard that also hosts live music. The winery is located at 4374 Swartz Road in Maurertown, which is about a 45-minute drive from Harrisonburg. For more information, visit northmountainvineyard.com.
Third Hill/DeMello Vineyards Wendy and Edward DeMello serve up a handful of reds and whites at their Third Hill Winery in Quicksburg (2110 Quicksburg Road), about 25 miles north of Harrisonburg. After a rough first year dealing with Mother Nature, the couple is now on their way to celebrating the business’ twoyear mark. The winery also has a cozy tasting room. Ballot basics: voting in the Valley By SHELBY MERTENS Daily News-Record
As freshmen adjust to new classes and campus life, students should keep in mind that the Nov. 7 General Election will be here before you know it, and the deadline to register to vote is fast approaching. The main election this fall is the gubernatorial race between Democratic candidate Ralph S. Northam, Republican Ed W. Gillespie and Clifford D. Hyra, who’s running as a Libertarian. Northam, a military veteran and former state senator, is Virginia’s current lieutenant governor. Gillespie most recently served as the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia. He was also a past chairman of the Republican National Committee and counselor to former President George W. Bush. Hyra is a patent attorney. A few local races will be included on this year’s ballot as well in Harrisonburg.
