The season of Lent and Easter Spring is eagerly anticipated, as many people look forward to enjoying the great outdoors once more. Spring is also a special time of year for practicing Christians.

is a very important time of year for Christians. During Lent, Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, selfdenial, and spiritual discipline. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and While the Bible does not reference lasting 40 weekdays until the arrival Lent, the practice of observing Lent of Easter Sunday, the Lenten season has become a standard.

The following focuses on each of the special days of this church season as they pertain to Western Christianity (Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent somewhat differently).

Ash Wednesday The Day of Ashes commemorates the repentance of sin. On Ash Wednesday, Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross in recognition of their need to repent. Many churches host Ash Wednesday services, and those who receive the ashes are not only reminded of their mortality and sinfulness, but also of the opportunity for absolution. Christians typically fast on Ash Wednesday, though some simply abstain from eating meat.

Palm Sunday On what is now called “Palm Sunday,” Jesus Christ rode a donkey into Jerusalem while villagers welcomed him and waved palm branches. This is mentioned in each of the Biblical Gospels and occurs a week before His subsequent resurrection. Jesus possibly rode a donkey rather than a horse as a sign of peace, as a war-waging king might ride a horse. The “Passion of the Christ” is typically read during Palm Sunday masses.

Holy Thursday Holy Thursday is sometimes referred to as “Covenant Thursday,” “Maundy Thursday” or “Thursday of Mysteries.” Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper

of Jesus Christ with the apostles. According to Catholic News Agency, Holy Thursday might be one of the most important, complex and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood.

Good Friday Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

Holy Saturday Holy Saturday marks the final day of the Triduum, or the three days preceding Easter Sunday. Scripture states that Holy Saturday was when Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb.

Easter Sunday A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Typically, Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended Sunday services for Christians. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season.

Easter symbolism complements the holiday Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special.

Eggs

Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hard-boiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life,

according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of

fasting and penance became a way to celebrate Easter.

Crucifix The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to

give new life to people after death. In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season.

Rabbit The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb.

Lilies Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing

the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection.

Lamb The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were originally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all — the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.” Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday.

History of Passover celebrations Every year Jewish people celebrate Passover, a commemoration of the liberation of the Jews from slavery under Egyptian leaders. Religious texts tell that God helped the children of Israel escape slavery in Egypt with the assistance of Moses and 10 plagues. Israelites were employed as slaves to build new monuments to Egypt’s far-reaching power. Moses was the adopted brother of the Pharoah at the time. Moses had fled the palace years earlier due to disillusionment over his Egyptian upbringing and his ties to the Israelite slaves. One evening Moses was contacted by God via a burning bush that would not be consumed by fire. God called out to Moses and commissioned him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt after hearing their pleas and witnessing their suffering. Moses asked God to choose another for the mission, but the Lord was adamant. Moses set out to speak to Pharoah, but was unsuccessful in his

efforts. It was then that God helped Moses’ effort by inflicting the 10 Plagues, also referred to as the Biblical Plagues in the Christian bible. The plagues were designed to contrast the overwhelming power of the Israelite God from the importance of the Egyptian gods. One of the plagues occurred when God turned the Nile River’s water into blood. He also brought on hordes of frogs, lice and flies. God brought pestilence to Egyptian livestock and then boils to Egyptian people. Plagues of hail, locusts and darkness followed. When these efforts did not produce the freedom sought by the Israelites, God said he would go through Egypt and all of the firstborn sons of the Egyptians, including Pharoah’s own son, would perish. Moses was informed to tell the Israelites to mark their own doors with lamb’s blood so that the Lord would pass over these homes and spare the Israelites’ children from harm. This final plague devastated the

Egyptian people and proved so horrific as to warrant the freedom of the Israelite slaves. Pharoah freed them, and Moses led them all on a mass exodus from Egypt. Passover, or Pesach, is first mentioned in the Torah’s account of the Exodus from Egypt. The word “pesach” is believed to mean “he hovered over, guarding,” which is the image evoked by the retelling of the Passover story. Today there are many Passover traditions that date back to early history. Jewish people may dine on lamb or goat meat in memory of the lambs sacrificed. All forms of leavened bread or leavening agents (chametz) are avoided as the fleeing Israelite slaves had no leavened bread to take with them on their journey. Homes are cleared of all leavening agents. Firstborn sons are commanded to observe the Fast of the Firstborn. Passover seder feasts are enjoyed, and men and women drink four cups of wine during the meal. Homes are made Kosher for the purpose of the

holiday, and a separate set of Passover dishes, glassware and silverware that have never touched chametz are used. Games, songs and traditional readings are all part of the Passover celebration, which lasts for seven or eight days depending on the area of the world in which it is being observed. Historically, together with Shavuot and Sukkot, Passover completes the trio of the pilgrimage festivals of the Jewish people.

Holy Myrrhbearers: Worshiping He Who Is Risen! The Orthodox Church is the ancient Church founded by Jesus Christ through his apostles in the Middle East 2,000 years ago. Holy Myrrhbearers is an Orthodox Christian Church in Harrisonburg, VA, serving the cities of the Shenandoah Valley including Harrisonburg, Staunton and Waynesboro and the counties surrounding them. We keep to ancient ways, following the Old Calendar (Julian) and other traditional practices such as head coverings for women, modest dress, confession before taking Communion, standing for the services, and the chanting of the Liturgy without instrument. Some of us were born Orthodox, but many of us are converts to the Faith. Our parish venerates the Holy Myrrhbearers, who went to Christ’s tomb to anoint His body with myrrh, not yet realizing that He was not dead, but Risen! They were the first to learn of Christ’s glorious Resurrection. Our Rector, Priest Gabriel Weller, was born and raised here in Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley and the Tidewater area. A former Methodist and UCC, he encountered the Orthodox Faith while he was in Seminary, he converted to the Orthodox Faith, and was ordained to the priesthood in 2009.

Create religious Easter traditions Easter is on the way, and practicing Christians across the globe have spent the Lenten season preparing for the day when they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is a season best spent in the company of close friends and family, and the following are a few ways for Christians to celebrate their faith in the weeks leading up to Easter Sunday. • Give Easter eggs a different meaning. Easter eggs are popular among youngsters, and that popularity can be used to teach kids about their faith. Eggs are frequently viewed as a symbol of new life, so parents can use them to show their children how Christ died and was born anew. Eggs can be filled with small items that symbolize something related to Christ’s story. Or they can be left empty to represent the empty tomb after His resurrection. • Eat food that conveys Biblical stories. For Easter dinner, enjoy foods that are mentioned in the Bible. A fish

dinner can convey the story of how Jesus multiplied fish to feed the crowds, or dine on lamb and share the story of Passover. • Participate in church services. Throughout Lent, many parishes offer Easter vigils or specialized services that relate the account of Jesus’ life and subsequent death on the cross. Some churches may recreate realistic stations of the Cross. Employing pageantry to bring biblical stories to life can help young children visualize and better understand the meaning of Easter. • Create a Christ-centered Easter basket. Parents can still fill kids’ Easter baskets with some of the familiar confectionary treats, but those parents who impart lessons about their faith to their kids also can include books about the story of Easter, rosary beads, a crucifix for a child’s room, and maybe a children’s Bible. • Make time for volunteer work. Many families reserve volunteerism

for the Christmas season, but Easter also marks a great time to volunteer. In a season that focuses on the ultimate sacrifice, families can open their hearts to others. Invite someone over for Easter dinner who has nowhere to go. Share your holiday celebrations with a person of another faith so that he or she may be able to see what makes this time

of year special. Create a service jar filled with small, loving tasks everyone in the family can do each day. The Lenten season, including Easter, is the most celebrated time of the year for Christians. Families can enjoy the festivities by blending many different traditions together and by focusing on the spirituality of the season.

The meaning of Good Friday Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including non-Christians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. Good Friday is one of the holiest days of the year for Christians across the globe.
