Your guide to Holy Week events H

oly Week marks the most solemn and revered period on the Christian calendar. Holy Week helps to mark the Paschal Mystery, which includes the Passion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. Many events unfolded in a short period of time during the final days of Christ’s physical existence on earth. These events are marked during Holy Week. To understand them further, here’s a day-byday guide.

Palm Sunday Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, a 40-day period of solemn prayer and repentance. Palm Sunday recalls Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem when he was received with lavish praise and excitement. Catholic Online, the online guide to the Catholic faith, says Jesus arrived humbly on a donkey to show he came in peace as a man of the people.

As signs of respect, townspeople placed clothes, branches and palm fronds in front of Jesus.

was paid 30 pieces of silver for his information.

Holy Monday

On this evening Christ dined for Passover with his disciples at The Last Supper, creating a template for Holy Mass and Holy Eucharist celebrations. During the meal, Jesus predicted the events that would immediately follow, including his betrayal, the denial of Peter, and his death and resurrection.

Matthew 21 and Mark 11 indicate that Christ returned to Jerusalem this day and cleansed the Temple area from shameful practices. Luke 19 indicates that Pharisees warn Jesus that he should silence the crowd’s praises toward him.

Holy Tuesday As described in John 12:20-36 and John 13:21-38, some people observed Christ’s predictions of his own death on this day. He was also confronted by Temple leadership for the cleansing of the Temple the day before, and they questioned his authority.

Holy (Spy) Wednesday This day marks Judas’ betrayal of Jesus when he met with high priests. Judas

Holy Thursday

Good Friday Pontius Pilate bowed to the pressure of the Temple leadership and the crowds, condemning Jesus to death by crucifixion. Christ was forced to parade through crowds wearing a crown of thorns to symbolize his status as King of the Jews, and carried a massive wooden cross on his back. He was nailed to the cross by the ankles and wrists and hanged for three hours. He died at 3 pm. His body

was hastily removed and put in a tomb.

Holy Saturday Christ’s disciples were heartbroken at his death and observed the Jewish Sabbath in sorrow, forgetting about the promise of resurrection.

Easter Sunday The public discovered that Jesus’ tomb was empty and that he fulfilled his promise to rise from the dead. This is a great feast day with worship and celebration. Easter Sunday is the foremost day of religious observance within the Christian faith.

Planning The Future Of Kingsway Outreach

K

ingsway Prison and Family Outreach was chartered as a Chris an non-profit with a 501(c) (3) tax status in 1983. Shelton and Louise Jennings were founders and co-directors un l 2012 when Shelton died. Since that me Louise has been the director. Kingsway is growing and Louise feels like it is me to consider hiring an Office Assistant that would be able to step up to the plate when she is no longer available. Hiring someone does not mean she is leaving or re ring, just that she is ge ng older and is planning for the future. Louise would like to help train the next director while she is s ll healthy and able. She does not want the outreach of Kingsway to die with her. Our Kingsway office is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 l 2 to help returning ci zens with whatever they need to succeed. It could

be food, clothes, transporta on or just a listening ear. Kingsway cannot be described in just a sentence or two because it has so many components. We now have over 1,500 inmates on the birthday card list. Easter and other holiday cards are also sent. The Apple Tree Project provides Christmas gi s for the children of inmates and toiletry gi s for over 6,000 inmates in prison and jails close by. Many coming out of prison need housing which is really hard to find. We do not have much success there yet because affordable housing just is not available. Church services are held in Augusta Correc onal Center every Friday night and every other month at Coffeewood. A bible study is offered at Fluvanna Correc onal Center for women and two bible studies are held for the ladies at

Middle River Regional Jail. There is also a Thursday night group at the Kingsway office. Un l recently Louise was the Chaplain for the women at RockinghamHarrisonburg Regional Jail, but all of the women were moved to Middle River Regional Jail. Louise visits them if they do not have a pastor and request a visit. To learn more about Kingsway and how you can par cipate, check out the website at kingwayoutreach.org and also on Facebook. We are located in Duke’s Plaza Shopping Center, 2217 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801. Kingsway is also par cipa ng with the Great Community Give on April 17th . You can find that link on kingswayoutreach.org. Our Power Hour is from 12-1 pm whereas we will be eligible for cash prize if we have the most donors during that hour. You’re Invited To Visit Truth & Grace Fellowship

O

ur purpose at Truth And Grace Fellowship is to love God and love people. Our focus is not on brick and mortar but on how we can use our gi ings and resources to be a blessing to those around us. Jesus said, as recorded in Mark 8:32, that if we hold to His teaching, we are really His disciples. Then we “will know the truth, and the truth will set us free.” We all want to walk in freedom don’t we? Quite o en, however, we take God’s truth and try to make people “eat it” without adding the necessary ingredient of grace. Truth without grace becomes law and places people in bondage. Truth, seasoned with grace, however, makes the truth palatable and leads to freedom and life. At Truth And Grace we are commi ed to teaching the truth of God’s word seasoned with His marvelous grace.

If you do not have a church home, we invite you to come and visit with us some me. You too can experience the transforma on that is possible when we apply God’s seasoned truth to our lives. We meet on Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM, at the John C. Myers Elementary School in Broadway.

We will join the most important conversation followers of Jesus Christ can have based on John 1:35-39 summarized here as: What are you seeking? Where does Jesus live? Come and see. Come and join us at the table and be inspired to carry the fragrance of Christ through your life to the world. There is no cost for this event but a love offering will be received to help cover expenses. Lunch is included. To register, you can call or text at 540-578-0825. Crea ng A School Culture With Dignity For All By Andrea Wenger

S

i ng in a circle and talking sounds easy. But using a “circle process” to ensure every voice is heard and respected takes discipline and hard work. That’s what K-12 teachers at Eastern Mennonite School are learning as they commit to restora ve prac ces in educa on. Using a “circle process” is one way administrators and teachers help to make sure every voice is heard and respected at EMS. In a circle, par cipants face each other and pass a “talking piece.” Only the person with the talking piece may talk; others listen. Par cipants can “pass” when the piece comes to them. Everyone has a chance to be heard. Each week, middle and high school students meet in Neighbor Groups of eight to 10 student where they o en prac ce the circle format to discuss a common theme. A recent theme was the role that technology plays in each person’s life and the impact that it has on rela onships, study habits and learning. In a disciplinary situa on, the circle provides space for those who have been hurt to share how they were affected by others’ ac ons. Perpetrators listen and learn to

understand the consequences of their choices; they get a chance to talk too. At a prac ce session with teachers, Jus n King, high school principal noted that some students -- and adults -- may be skep cal about the process. “What is this ‘mumbo jumbo?’ students may ask,” he laughed. But, he explained, there is something special about si ng in a circle. “It slows us down. When we make me for one person to share and others to focus on them, it’s hard not to listen.” “We are commi ed to making sure we -- students and teachers -- are accountable to each other,” says Maria Archer K-8 principal. “When restora ve prac ces become a part of our everyday lives, conflicts are addressed and, most importantly, each person has a voice.” EMS has openings in several grades for the 2019-20 year. Interested people are invited to schedule a tour and me for middle and high school students to shadow a student with similar interests. Elementary families are welcome to an Open House on April 25 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Call Marsha Thomas at 540236-6021 with ques ons or to schedule an appointment.

Above: Heidi Byler’s third grade class uses a circle process regularly so if it is used in mes of conflict, the process feels familiar and comfortable. Le : Jus n King, high school principal, chats with a student 1:1. Administrators and teachers know each EMS student by name, building rela onships toward a school culture that respects the dignity of all.

Explore the true meaning of Easter According to scripture, Jesus was enjoying the Passover dinner when he sat down with his disciples. Understanding that this would be his last earthly meal and that someone close to him would betray him, he took bread and gave thanks to God for it. He broke the bread and said it was his body that should be given up so sins would be forgiven. He did a similar gesture with wine, indicating that it was his blood that should be shed as a sacrifice for all. Christ instructed the disciples to do the same ritual in the future in memory of him. Jesus was subsequently betrayed and turned over to the authorities. He was sentenced to crucifixion and perished on the cross. His body was cleansed and placed in a tomb sealed by a stone. His followers were unaware

of the miracle that would ensue in the days to come. On Easter Sunday, the tomb was discovered open and empty. Jesus had risen from the dead, providing irrefutable proof that he was the Son of God. In turn, Jesus fulfilled all he was born to do and preached. Easter did not always symbolize Christ’s resurrection when it was first celebrated. It was once a pagan ritual of renewal and birth. However, when early missionaries began spreading Christianity’s message, the holiday — falling around the time of Christ’s actual resurrection — was adopted to commemorate the religious miracle. Today it stands as a testament to ultimate sacrifice and the promise of eternal life for all who believe in him.

Relax. Enjoy. Live.

B

unnies and baskets, chocolates and candies. It’s that time of year when parents scramble to ensure their children wake up to a trove of treats, and families decide on who is serving the lamb dinner this year.

Easter, above all, is a religious commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the culmination of the holy period known as Lent, and it the most significant date on the Christian liturgical calendar.

These are some of the familiar Easter traditions, but much more is involved with the holiday than egg hunts and brightly adorned bonnets. For the religious, it can be important to delve into the true meanings behind Easter and let those discoveries help shape celebrations.

Jesus Christ was the Son of God, who fulfilled the prophesies that he would give his own life for his people so they could enjoy eternal life after their own mortal bodies perished. Easter, from Jesus’ very own words, marked a new covenant for the faithful.

The Old Legend of the Dogwood ~ Unknown

Two thousand years ago, few trees in the Middle East were not big enough to construct anything. However, one tree was valued above the others for its thick trunk and fine, strong wood. When the Romans came to rule over Jerusalem, their government used this same timber to build the crosses for executing criminals. A group of workers were assigned to gather wood for the crosses. Before long, every Roman official knew the best wood came from these gatherers of execution wood, so those workers became popular. One day, the wood gatherers received a special request. An officer of the Roman court came and said, “The King of Jews is to be put to death. Deliver an extra-large cross made from your finest wood.” So, a fresh tree was cut from the forest of the trees with thick trunks and fine, strong wood. An extra-tall (and extra-heavy) cross was quickly made and delivered. Three days after the death of Jesus of Nazereth, the chief wood gatherer got alarming news. “All of our finest trees are withering!” the messenger whispered. The wood gatherer hurried to the forest and saw that it was true. Several years later, the chief wood gatherer heard that, every spring, many people visited the old forest that had once made his job so easy. Despite his advancing years, he set out to discover why. He saw the remains of forest, now like a salty bottoms, with only a few trees still standing tall, baked, lifeless and rotting. But what was this? As he drew closer, his feeble eyes could make out the people walking among thousands of beautiful, flowering bushes. Seeing one of his own workers there, the old man said, “No one could ever make a cross out

Good Friday, April 19 - 7 pm of this twisted wood. Our finest tree has gone to the dogs!” He noticed the beautiful white flowers, each blossom looking as if it had been burned from the touch of a miniature cross. So...an old and beautiful legend has it that, at the time of the crucifixion, the dogwood was comparable in size to the oak tree and other monarchs of the forest. Because of its firmness and strength it was selected as the timber for the cross, but to be put to such a cruel use greatly distressed the tree. Sensing this, the crucified Jesus in his gentle pity for the sorrow and suffering of all said to it: “Because of your sorrow and pity for My sufferings, never again will the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a gibbet. Henceforth it will be slender, bent and twisted and its blossoms will be in the form of a cross -- two long and two short petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be nail prints -- brown with rust and stained with red -- and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, and all who see this will remember.

What is the Last Supper? Many important events took place during what’s now known as Holy Week, which commemorates the final days of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the son of God. The Last Supper was one of most important events to take place during the final week of Christ’s life. Contradictions within the Gospels make it hard to say with absolute certainty when the Last

Supper took place, but according to Catholic Online, Evangelists and critics generally agree that the Last Supper was held on a Thursday that was very likely the evening of preparation for Jewish celebration of Passover. The Last Supper is depicted in the Gospels as the final meal Jesus shared with his 12 apostles before he was crucified. Christians believe that, during the meal,

Jesus predicted that his disciple Peter would deny knowing him three times before the following morning, while also predicting that another disciple present at the meal would ultimately betray him. Many Christians also believe the Last Supper marked the institution of what is now the sacrament of the Eucharist. The Gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke include accounts of the sharing of

the bread and wine, though each account differs slightly. While the Gospel of John, which differs in various ways from those of Mark, Matthew and Luke, does not describe the bread and wine ritual, the Bread of Life Discourse (John 6:2259) has been interpreted as Eucharistic. The Last Supper is a significant event in the life of Jesus Christ and one that merits special consideration during Holy Week.
