Park View Federal Credit Union is Neighbors Serving Neighbors® Park View Federal Credit Union has been serving the community since 1969 and will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary next year. The credit union has five branches in Harrisonburg, Dayton, Broadway, and on the campuses of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community and Bridgewater Retirement Community. In November, members and employees of PVFCU gathered to serve the community commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day, now known as Veteran’s Day. In its fifth year, PVFCU’s Community Connection continued to show PVFCU’s vision of “Neighbors Serving Neighbors®” by volunteering over 375 hours in appreciation of the men and women who have served at home and abroad. Volunteers stacked and split wood, sorted books and donations, cleaned, raked leaves, trimmed bushes, and provided other help as needed at nine local non-profit organizations in the community.

Church Renovation Lifts Christmas Spirit In Bethlehem By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH, Associated Press BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — A historic renovation of the Church of the Nativity is lifting spirits in the biblical town of Bethlehem ahead of Christmas, offering visitors a look at ancient mosaics and columns that have been restored to their original glory for the first time in 600 years. City officials hope the renovation at the traditional birthplace of Jesus will boost tourism and a weak economy in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and perhaps slow a decades-long drain of the Christian population from the lands where the faith was born. “Christians are leaving the Holy Land due to the lack of peace and economic hardships and we are struggling to keep them in their homeland,” said Bethlehem Mayor Anton Salman. “This is one of the ways.” The renovation started in 2013, a year after UNESCO declared the church
a world heritage site, and is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The Palestinian Authority formed a committee of local Christian leaders to oversee the renovation and contracted an Italian company to carry out the project. Ziad al-Bandak, the committee head, said it has collected $14 million out of $17 million needed. Roughly half of the funding has come from the Palestinian Authority and local Muslim and Christian businesses, and the rest from foreign donors. “It has become such a beautiful church,” he said. “Every Christian in the world would love to see it now.” One of Christianity’s most sacred shrines, the church was built in the 4th century by St. Helena over a cave where the Virgin Mary In this Dec. 6, 2018 photo, restoration experts work on a mosaic inside the Church of the Nativity, is said to have given birth. “… being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1.6 Thursday, January 17 marks the 150th Anniversary of Harrisonburg Baptist Church and we will begin our year-long observance with a Service of Celebration on Sunday, January 20 in our Sunday morning worship service at 10:30 a.m. We would love for you to join in on any and all of the celebrations planned to mark the year! On the 20th, Dr. Bill Tuck, who was pastor of HBC from 19661969 will join us once again to bring the message. There will be special music from the James Madison University Student Brass Quintet as well as other folks from the church. After the service there will be a reception in the fellowship hall for everyone to continue the festivities. Events continue to be scheduled throughout the year. In March, we will celebrate our Baptist Heritage through a joint adult Sunday School study. In addition, we will be joined throughout the year by others who are no stranger to HBC—Dr. Tom Reynolds, pastor from 1983-2002, and HBC home folks Dr. Corey Fields, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Newark, Delaware, and Dr. Jo Ann Stancil, a leader in Baptist education in Wake Forest, North Carolina. On Sunday, September 29, we will host an old-fashioned Homecoming Service complete with dinner on the grounds. A special guest from the 19th century will be joining us for that occasion (aka Fred Anderson, former Executive Director of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society). Field trips, a memory book, a community appreciation event to show our unending gratitude to the City of Harrisonburg, art showcases and more are also in the works for the celebration. You are invited to join us for all of these! You can check our HBC website from time to time for updates on the events. The year-celebration will culminate in a Service of New Beginnings in January of 2020 where will we give testimony not only to what God has done in our past but what God is doing even now and to the work God continues to do through Harrisonburg Baptist Church in the Shenandoah Valley! We are grateful for our time in this community and for the ways God has called us to minister here and be apart of this neighborhood. It is an honor and we want to thank you for what you have meant to us during these past 150 years. And by God’s grace, we will continue to minister in this place with so many other beloved church families for 150 more!

Church Renovation In Bethlehem continued mostly see today is the basilica built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, who ruled from 527 to 565. Neglected for decades before the renovation, the roof of the church was leaking, windows were broken, mosaics were covered in grime and walls and columns were damaged. After five years of work, it has been transformed. Emad Nassar, a Palestinian engineer overseeing the renovations, said the project started with the ceiling. Roughly 10 percent of the beams were replaced with wood imported from old destroyed churches in Italy, windows were fixed, and outside stones and walls were renovated. Perhaps the biggest challenge has been repairing the badly damaged 2,000 square meter (21,500 square foot) wall mosaic. So far, 120 square meters (1,292 square feet) have been restored, depicting images of Christ and Christian saints. Workers are also restoring a floor mosaic. The restoration process is meticulous and painstaking. As Nassar spoke, three Italian workers were cleaning a mosaic
with tiny brushes and covering them with protective material. “In the coming year, we are going to continue renovating the columns, the floor mosaic, the tiles and the front yard floor,” Nassar said. The delicate relations between the Holy Land’s major Christian denominations have factored into the poor condition of the church. The Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian churches have traditionally viewed each other with deep suspicion. Under a 19th-century agreemen called the Status Quo, each denomination has its own areas and responsibilities. But over the years, turf battles have erupted into arguments and even fistfights among clergymen. The Rev. Samour, a 70-year-old Greek Orthodox clergyman who has served at the church for nearly half a century, said the Palestinian Authority managed to get the rival churches on board. The construction did not touch the altar crypt with the 14-point silver star marking the spot where, according to Christian tradition, Jesus was born.

Church Renovation In Bethlehem continued Although it also needs renovation, the churches have not yet reached an agreement on the crypt. Bethlehem is heavily dependent on Christmas tourism, with hotels, restaurants and gift stores doing much of their business during the short holiday season. Some of us have worshiped in the Episcopal Church our entire lives while many of us were raised in secular homes or in other faith communities. We are an inclusive congregation of the young and not so young, workers in and out of the home, married, and singles of all descriptions. As Anglicans, we encompass wide-ranging traditions that are Catholic and Protestant, ancient and reformed, progressive and conservative. Emmanuel is a faithful Christian community that celebrates God’s presence in our worship, learning, fellowship and service to others. We serve others in many ways, including our weekly food pantry, and providing shelter and meals to the homeless in the winter through the Open Doors program. We would love to become your church home. Church Renovation In Bethlehem continued
A visitor photographs a renovated part of a fresco inside the Church of the Nativity, built atop the site where Christians believe Jesus Christ was born, in the West Bank City of Bethlehem. (AP Photo/Majdi Mohammed)
A 2017 census in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem counted just under 47,000 Palestinian Christians, or about 1 percent of a Palestinian population of close to 4.8 million. Twenty years earlier, Christians still made up more than 1.7 percent of the Palestinian population, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. Roughly half of Palestinian Christians live in the Bethlehem area, where their share of the population has also declined significantly.
Wadie Abunassar, a senior adviser to church leaders in the Holy Land, said the Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has treated Christians well, but that lack of progress toward a resolution over Israel and Palestinian statehood have driven emigration. Despite lack of hope, he urged Christians to stay. “This is our homeland. We are called to be witnesses for Jesus in his homeland,” he said. “This is a great privilege, which most Christians in the world don’t have.”

Kingsway Prison and Family Outreach was established and chartered as a Christian non-profit ministry by Shelton and Louise Jennings in 1983 and have maintained an office in Harrisonburg since 1994. The goal is to show Respect, Love and Compassion and to be a comprehensive outreach to those impacted by the criminal justice system. Kingsway does many things for those inside of prison, from having Bible studies, furnishing Bibles, providing holiday and birthday cards to encouragers and inmate Christmas gifts. Upon reentry, returning citizens face many challenges such as finding housing, a job and a record that will follow them everywhere they go for the rest of their lives. Kingsway provides Bible Studies, group mentoring and resource referrals. The one thing we have not been successful in is find housing for those returning. Any help in that area will be greatly appreciated. The Apple Tree Project, providing gifts to the children of those incarcerated began in 1985 as a response to the massive flooding that hit the area that year. The ministry relies solely on donations and help from volunteers to operate and would not exists without their vital support. Kingsway has been able to continue without a payroll. Louise Jennings, Director is not salaried. She says she does not feel comfortable taking a salary when their are people without even a roof over their heads. Donations and volunteers are needed year round. Stop by Kingsway Outreach, 2217 South Main St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or call 540-433-5658. Office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 10 am til 2 pm or by appointment.. Kingsway will strive to always help inmates both inside and outside get back on their feet and stay out. FAITH AND VALUES
Harrisonburg, Va.
Pleasant View Dream Endowment Project “Jars of Clay” Extended Pleasant View’s newly revised mission is to support “individuals who have disabili es in living out their goals for meaningful work, rela onships, and spiritual development.” When Richard and Helen DeBu s’ estate was received, our board of directors designated the Dream Endowment to encourage employee-ini ated “dream” projects to support our mission. Each year, grants are awarded for projects, one of which was the “Jars of Clay” project submi ed by Pleasant View’s Pastor Dave Gullman. The purpose of the “Jars of Clay” project was to encourage spiritual development for people with developmental disabili es as well as increase community involvement in our local Faith and Light services. As part of the project, Pastor Gullman and those on the planning commi ee reached out to area churches, colleges, and organiza ons to invite par cipa on in a monthly meal before a ending the Harrisonburg Faith and Light prayer mee ngs. Through the meals and fellowship, long standing rela onships were strengthened and new rela onships were forged. The last weekend in June 2018 the Shenandoah Faith and Light Communi es of Harrisonburg and Broadway came together for a weekend retreat at Camp Brethren Woods. The retreat was the culmina on of the six-month project proposed by Pastor Gullman with funds provided from the Pleasant View, Inc. Dream Endowment. Each Faith and Light Community welcomes individuals who have disabili es, their families and friends, and is a place where each person is accepted and has value. The services generally last an hour, during which there is me for prayer, spending me in sharing, and me celebra ng the gi s of each person. Faith and Light is not intended to take the place of one’s local church, but rather add to the faith community. With the “Jars of Clay” grant from the Dream Endowment extended, we will hold another Faith and Light retreat at Camp Brethren Woods June 21-23, 2019. We invite you to expand your faith community and a end a Faith and Light service. For more informa on, contact Dave Gullman at 540-433-8960. Keep informed about mee ng places and mes through Pleasant View Inc.’s Facebook or website event pages.
