Talk Nerdy To Me Gifts For A Self-Proclaimed Geek From Kid To Adult By JUSTIN McILWEE Daily News-Record

Nerd. Thirty years ago, when somebody said the word, images of someone with high pants, a pocket protector and glasses came to mind. Today, however, “nerd” is worn like a badge of honor and used more so to describe a person who is passionate about a particular subject, whether it be video games, dance, art or otherwise. Chances are, you

know a nerd. In fact, there’s a high probability that you have a nerd in your life in some capacity. And, if you are lucky enough to have a nerd in your life, you probably have to shop for them with the holiday fast approaching. But much like the superheroes your nerd probably loves watching, have no fear, because here are some gifts to buy that special nerd in your life:

Video Games Video games are always a hot item come Christmas. Last year, it was the NES Classic Edition that immediately sold out, and this year, Nintendo released the SNES Classic Edition. But if you weren’t lucky enough to get your hands on one of those consoles, Christmas can still be saved with this year’s

popular video games and systems. “If you don’t have a Nintendo Switch, you should get one. They’re awesome,” said Lauren Davis, owner of 8bit Oasis Gaming in Harrisonburg. “‘Super Mario Odyssey’ is definitely one of your top hitters, ‘[The Legend of Zelda:] Breath of the Wild’ is another one. As far as PS4 and Xbox One, the new ‘Call of Duty’ just came out and people love ‘Call of Duty.’ ‘Star Wars Battlefront II’ is coming out, that’s going to be a big one. A lot of [role-playing games] are coming out that I think are going to be popular.”

Board And Role-Playing Games For most people growing up, board games were a way to pass a rainy day or something you were forced to do with your family on a

Friday night. But in the past decade, according to a Jan. 23, 2017, NewStatesman article, the board game industry has exploded, and as of August 2015, is worth $1.2 billion. If your nerd is a fan of tabletop games, here’s what you should be looking for. “It’s not your typical Uno or Sorry — more ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ style board games now,” Davis said. “Ones called ‘Mass of Darkness’ or ‘Chronicles of Ascension,’ they’re almost character building board games. It’s a lot of fun because it’s a bunch of you trying to outwit the board. ‘Terraforming Mars’ is a really hard one to find because it’s so popular. We get it in and it’s out the door.” And while “Dungeons and Dragons”-like games are popular, the original D&D is also seeing a resurgence, according to Steve Lotts, owner of The Secret Lair, a comic book store in Harrisonburg. “The thing that’s constantly a big seller for us is ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ books and supplies,” he said. “Dice, and the player’s guides and the dungeon master guides and different adventures that people can run, we have a hard time keeping a lot of that stuff in stock.”

is really popular, ‘Batman and Superman,’ ‘Justice League.’ Marvel has recently restarted a bunch of their series, also related to The Avengers and Captain America and the Netflix shows like ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Luke Cage.’ A lot of those are big sellers all around.”

ABOVE: “Magic: The Gathering” cards are making a resurgence in popularity this year. LEFT: Retro video game systems are a popular gift and available this year at 8Bit Oasis Gaming. Comics movies recently have brought with it a surge in superhero comic books. People who get their first experience with Wonder Woman or The Avengers then want to immerse themselves in the differ-

ent worlds and learn as much about them as possible. A lot of the comics that are selling now are related to comic book movies,” Lotts said. “The current Batman series for DC

If none of the previous ideas have struck a chord, don’t worry, there’s still hope for finding that perfect gift for your nerd. “Magic [The Gathering] and Pokémon are coming back. People are coming in and wanting those card games,” Davis said. “You can’t go wrong with anything ‘Rick and Morty,’ and crossovers, which is what ‘Rick and Morty’ does so well. We have the X-Mon stuff, where it’s Pokémon with X-Men.” She continues, “[Funko] Pop figures will never go out of style. People love them because there’s so many. There’s a “Stranger Things” set coming out. Q Figures are becoming more popular. They look a little different than Pop. They’re about the same size, but they’re much more detailed.” Contact Justin McIlwee at jmcilwee@dnronline.com or 574-6265

Pawsitively Perfect: A Pet Giving Guide By SHELBY MERTENS

Daily News-Record

Surprising a loved one with an adorable puppy on Christmas morning may sound like the perfect present for the kids or spouse. Maybe a friend recently lost a pet and you want to cheer them up. The sentiment is there, but pets are lifelong commitments. They require lots of care and attention, as well as expense. The adoption fee is just the tip of the iceberg. So, before you rush to a shelter to find a companion, make sure a pet is the right choice for your family or friend. “I know we all like surprises, but we’re talking about a being,” said Anne Anderson, executive director of the Rockingham/ Harrisonburg SPCA. “We’re not talking about the blender or the VCR player.” A study by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found that 86 percent of pets given as gifts stayed in the home. However, Anderson said she has seen

What we encourage you to do is to pay for the adoption and the spay/neuter fee, then we give you a gift certificate and have the recipient come in and actually pick the pet that they would like to have as part of their household. Anne Anderson, Rockingham/Harrisonburg SCPA

cases of pets returned to the SPCA after the holidays because either the person

didn’t actually want a pet at the time, or the animal didn’t work out in terms of breed or personality type. The SPCA doesn’t prohibit holiday adoptions, but they do ask that you have a conversation with the person you’re thinking about giving a pet to, and consider giving them a gift certificate. After all, you are helping a needy pet find their forever home. “What we encourage you to do is to pay for the adoption and the spay/neuter fee, then we give you a gift certificate and have the recipient come in and actually pick the pet that they would like to have as part of their household,” Anderson said. Kelsey Cler, the community outreach and engagement coordinator at Anicira

Veterinary Center in Harrisonburg, said the decision needs to be well-thought out. The key is to “figure out what the right thing is for the recipient, and not just finding something cute to give to somebody,” she said. If a parent wants to give their child a dog or cat for Christmas, they need to be ready to take on the responsibility. “The thing that we really emphasize is putting the thought into it,” Cler said. Everybody has preferences. Some prefer cats over dogs, or vice versa. Some may like a black cat more than an orange one, or they may want a Great Dane and not a tiny Chihuahua. If the pet will live in the home of the person buying it, and the buyer knows exactly what breed the recipient wants, that may be fine for them to select the animal themselves, Anderson said.

But every animal has a different personality. For that reason, she discourages the gifter picking the pet out themselves. “You have some labs or jack russells that are very calm and quiet and a person may want that personality versus one that’s more exuberant, for example, or one that needs a lot of exercise and attention,” she said. “So, I really do think it’s a personal thing that the recipient is in a much better position to pick that puppy or pet of their own choosing rather than someone else.” A gift certificate can be purchased at the front desk of the SPCA and it does not have an expiration date. “So, if we don’t have the particular pet you’re looking for, whether it be breed or species or color or personality or whatever it is you’re seeking in a pet, it’ll probably come in at a later date. You can redeem it then,” Anderson said. The SPCA’s regular adoption fee is $65, plus a spay/neuter deposit that can range anywhere from $35 to $65, depending on whether it’s a cat or dog and male or female. The shelter animals receive vaccines, a microchip and flea and worm medication. Anicira, a veterinary clinic, has ani-

mals available for adoption, too. They also offer gift certificates. The adult adoption fee is $200 and puppies are $300 to $400. The adoption fee includes vaccinations, microchips, spay/neuter, flea and tick medication, heartworm test and a physical exam. If you think a pet is the right choice for your family or friend, Cler said to just “go for it. Give a pet a home.” “We do hope people look toward adoption [this holiday season],” she said. all over the world.”

Zola’s Nestled in the quaint Dayton Market off John Wayland Highway, the next shop specializes in “lovely textures, colors and fragrances that will help you create a home that reflects your personality and creativity.” Zola’s opened in the Dayton Market in 2003, selling silk flower arrangements, in-home decor, bath and body fragrances, scarves and jewelry. Owner Zola Showalter prides herself on being a local business because, as she explained, her customers have developed a level of trust with her and her products. “Each store here [in the Dayton Market] is individually owned, so you can get to know

the owner, and it’s small business supporting local people,” Showalter said. “I think local ownership puts more into their business, and there’s more of a trust factor. There’s more of a relationship, that you know who you’re buying from and what they’re all about.” She also added that while shoppers may be able to get slightly better prices at chain stores or online, when they shop those outlets, they miss out on certain aspects of the local experience. “It’s hard to compete with buying things from Amazon or the big box stores, because you may be able to get things at a better price, but then you don’t have some of that customer-friendly service, loyalty and extra things

that come along with shopping locally.”

Snow & Ice Christmas Store Dustin Kline and his family love decorating for Christmas. But, like many people, he grew tired of searching for unique decorations outside of what was being sold in the big chain stores. He wanted a local place he could go and find something a little different. That’s when Kline got the idea to open Snow & Ice Christmas and Gift Store. It’s located off Evelyn Byrd Avenue in Harrisonburg and, as their website states, is “the Shenandoah Valley’s premier one-stop shop for gifts and decor for all seasons, as well as all things Christmas, and we specialize in hard-to-find and high-quality items perfect for

use in your home or business.” For Kline, the big thing that makes his business the place to shop rather than the chain stores is that he said he can provide unique things that other bigger stores don’t offer. “The selection that we have is very unique and different from what the big box stores carry,” Kline said. “Literally almost every day we have customers coming in and expressing excitement over the items that they found that they had no idea was even available to get. They had been looking through the big box stores and weren’t having any luck finding that item that fit their desire or their need.” Many people choose to do their shopping on Black Friday, where they can find the best

deals at different chain stores. But if shoppers wait a day, they can support local businesses by participating in Small Business Saturday, which is held every year the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The day encourages shoppers to shop small and local. For people interested in being part of SBS, Snow & Ice plans to have different deals set up throughout the days to encourage customers to stop and keep their business local. “We do usually do some things for that,” Kline said. “We will run some specials throughout the store on various product categories and different product lines.” Contact Justin McIlwee at jmcilwee@dnronline.com or 574-6265

Oprah Unveils Her 2017 Favorite Things By LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Oprah Winfrey’s back with her longest holiday gift list

Winfrey’s elves, the magazine’s editor-at-large Gayle King and creative director Adam Glassman, spend much of the year scouting items for the list, with Oprah herself making the final decision on what to include for everyone — men, women, pets and kids — in apparel, tech, home goods, beauty, food and other offerings. “What Oprah always challenges us to do is to find some new brands, some indie brands, mom-and-pop kind of brands. We always have a fabulous mix of tried and true, and big people, but we also like to infiltrate new brands and also brands made in the USA,” Glassman told The Associated Press in a recent interview. Oprah was a bit skeptical at first, Glassman said. “She said, ‘Really? My parents grew up on the Lower East Side,” Glassman said. “Nobody makes pastrami better.”

Model Bakery English Muffins ($35) Due to Oprah’s obsession with these muffins, they’re back for a second year, Glassman said. She even travels with them and brought a batch to the set of “A Wrinkle in Time” in New Zealand for cast and crew to enjoy.
