Wellness Benefits Of A ‘Dry January’ By JEREMY DOUYLLIEZ
Director of Sales and Marketing, Bridgewater Retirement Community
As we usher in the New Year, many individuals embark on a transformative journey known as “Dry January.” After enjoying the excesses of the holiday season, Dry January encourages people to abstain from alcohol for the entire month, promoting a fresh start and fostering well-being. By abstaining from alcohol, the body undergoes detoxification, leading to increased energy levels and improved overall well-being. Embracing Dry January can also positively impact sleep patterns, leading to improved cognitive function and emotional well-being. Despite the health benefits of cutting back alcohol consumption, it can be challenging for those accustomed to enjoying a nightly glass of wine or a social cocktail. Fortunately, several options are available on the market to help you get through the month alcohol-free.

Hello! My name is Candy Grimes and I would like to share my journey of reaching a milestone in my life that most individuals take for granted everyday, having a BEAUTIFUL SMILES! I had crooked teeth in the bottom as well as having chipped-rotten teeth on the top, during my early adulthood other traumatic events made maintaining any oral hygiene work totally unreachable, causing many problems for me not only in appearance but in continuing infections and a real difficulty in eating certain foods. In the early years of having my own family I never let my guard down in ensuring total confidence and self esteem instill these traits in both of my children, knowing all along that the general public always looks @ me differently when you have a rottenbroken tooth when you smile. The treatment received from Dr. McIntyre and his staff @ SMILES FOR LIFE was AMAZING! All of my procedures in extracting broken rotten teeth on the top and bottom, as well as the implatation process of my bottom screw implants, was a journey we shared together. The experience of being in the Dental chair at his office is an environment full of warm, caring, sharing individuals, not only are you made to feel that you are his only patient when your work is being done but the whole entire staff works together as a team making every visit feel like you are an extended part of this working family environment. This whole experience of receiving a beautiful SMILE has been a surreal life-changing event for me. I no longer have poor self-esteem and suffer from reprisals from others. Since receiving my new SMILE, I feel like a new person. I now have self-esteem and confidence in my new smiles and it shows. When at work & out for leisure everyone notices my beautiful SMILE, it captures the attention of others. I would recommend SMILES FOR LIFE, Dr. McIntyre and his staff for any and all dental procedures, it’s more than a dental visit.” Candy G.

ion, laughter filled the room, and we knew this Christmas would be one for the memory books.
Check out these tips to help keep you upright this winter! 1. Do not walk with your hands in your pockets! Arms help with balance when walking and can help us stay upright if we slip. 2. Take short steps (shuffling steps) and slightly widen your base of support. Try walking somewhat like a penguin! 3. Wear shoes with rubber soles. Avoid smooth leather or plastic bottomed footwear. 4. Do not carry large loads. If carrying objects, try to position them so you can maintain equal weight on each foot. And be prepared to toss the load out of your way if you slip! 5. When getting in and out of the car, be extra cautious. Falls often happen when we are shifting weight and momentarily standing on one foot to lift our leg into the car. Try turning and sitting on the seat first, then pulling both feet into the car. Just reverse the process for getting out of the car. 6. Not all falls can be avoided. However, landing on your back, el-
bow, hand or wrist can cause significant injury. If possible, try landing on the fleshier part of your body, such as your side. If you hit the back of your head during a fall, please seek medical evaluation. Hitting your head can cause injuries that may or may not be immediately apparent but can be very serious. 7. Use handrails, handles, and stable surfaces when you can. Ask for a hand or the arm of a friend! 8. Be vigilant of commonly slippery surfaces such as the edge of a step or porch, areas of a sidewalk that remain shaded throughout the day, and black ice. 9. Salted sidewalks and parking lots might be free of ice, but walking on salt can be akin to walking on marbles. Plan for solid hand support or use of a steady device. 10. Call a friend or neighbor to help with outings! Create a fun day out for the ladies, guys, or couples! Or just give a call for an updated report on road conditions and parking lots where you may be heading. Enjoy the winter using some of these simple strategies to ensure you arrive safely to and from wherever your travels take you!

Level Up On Joy: Gaming For Seniors By JEREMY DOUYLLIEZ
Director of Marketing and Sales, Bridgewater Retirement Community
Would it surprise you to learn that one of the most popular Skyrim streamers (boasting over 1.3 million subscribers) is an 87-year-old grandmother from Ohio? Did some of that sentence sound like Greek to you? Let’s break it down. Skyrim is a fantasy role-playing game available to play on all the major gaming consoles; a streamer is a game-player who broadcasts their play sessions online; and 1.3 million subscribers is 1.3 million people tuning in to watch her play! So, as the cold winter winds sweep in, there’s a perfect opportunity to explore a world that transcends the chill outside— the world of video games. Contrary to popular belief, video games aren’t just for the younger generation. Seniors, too, can find immense joy and a host of benefits in embracing this interactive form of entertainment. Many assume video games are exclusively for the young. However, older adults, with their wealth of life experiences, can derive unique enjoyment from gaming. Whether it’s solving puzzles, embarking on epic adventures, or simply enjoying a game of cards, there’s a diverse gaming landscape that caters to all tastes. Another common misconception is that gamers are socially isolated. In reality, many video games today are designed for social interaction. Online multiplayer games enable seniors to connect with friends, family, or even make new acquaintances, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Additionally, while some may believe video games hinder physical activity, there are options that encourage movement. From virtual bowling to dancebased games, seniors can find entertaining ways to stay active while enjoying the gaming experience. Benefits of Gaming for Older Adults Video games often involve problem-solving, strategic thinking, and quick decision-making. Engaging in these activities can provide valuable cognitive stimulation, potentially enhancing memory and mental acuity. Meanwhile, online multiplayer games

Getting Started
As with any new hobby, the hardest part is often just knowing where to start. Today’s video game market is sprawling, with multiple consoles, genres, and platforms to navigate. But getting started can be as simple as opening the app store on your cell phone, where mobile gaming blockbusters are ready to download directly to your device. Start with games designed for beginners. Many platforms offer a variety of easy-to-learn games that can be enjoyed at a comfortable pace. And, look for a game that aligns with your personal taste. This winter, dust off that old Nintendo 64 your kids grew up with or explore the latest gaming technologies. The world of video games awaits, offering not just entertainment but a gateway to new experiences, connections, and joy.

The question of “where to start” is a common dilemma for many Virginians when confronted with new life phases, such as taking on the role of a caregiver for an aging relative, adjusting to post-military life, or navigating services for a disability. In 1987 a small group of active people wanted to see more organized activity with its older citizens. The goal of the group was to promote health and wellness. Fast forward to 2023 and the National Senior Games have grown from those initial games in 1987 with 2,500 participants to over 10,000 for most of the last 15 years. The games have been held throughout the United States and consist of a myriad of activities including archery, basketball, bowling, corn hole, golf, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field and many others. Individuals 50 and older can qualify and participate in the National Senior Games after qualifying in their state games or in another state. The Virginia State Games were held this year at Massanutten and at East Rock High School in Elkton. The 2025 Virginia Games will again be held locally. I have participated as a track athlete in four of the past five National Senior Games. Everyone has a story to tell about their journeys to the games. For me, the stories are as meaningful as my participation. My journey began early as a youth in a
small town in Virginia. My mother, trying to raise two boys alone, turned us loose in our little town of 5000 with instructions “to check in by dinner.” Competition started early. We were constantly on our feet and when not in games, romping through the creeks or mountains near our home or riding our bicycles. The transition to high school sports was easy. We had exceptional coaches and teachers who became my roles models, as I had no father at home. In high school, I participated in football, basketball and baseball. I tried track in senior year and still remember my first race and time. I had found heaven! Track turned out to be my best sport. I ended up breaking the existing sprint records at the school. In college, I had a successful four-year career running track, lettering each year and being part of a relay team that had the school record for 30 years. After graduation it was on to teaching and coaching, which was a lifetime goal. Running took a back seat as I started my career. In my late twenties, I decided I needed to do some aerobic conditioning so added running.

Feel The Warmth Of Social Connection This Winter By NATALIE KERR
Professor of Psychology, James Madison University
As winter descends and the days grow dark and cold, you might have fewer opportunities for socializing. You might even be forced to stay home because the winter weather increases your risk of illness or injury. The good news is that there are many things you can do to feel connected, even when you’re socially isolated. Here are a few science-backed strategies to consider: 1. Use technology. If you can’t see your friends and family in person, make a concerted effort to connect with them in other ways. Phone and video calls are likely be more beneficial. It’s the warmth in a person’s voice that helps you feel most connected. 2. Generate connection on demand.
You can generate feelings of connection with just your thoughts. Think about the last time you felt a strong bond with someone. What were you doing in that moment? Stop reading for a moment and savor those feelings of togetherness. 3. Practice meditation. Meditation is often a solitary practice, but it can help you feel more socially connected and less lonely. In one study, people who started meditating for 20 minutes a day were significantly less lonely after just 14 days. 4. Connect with the natural world. Research shows that being in nature strengthens your sense of social connection, even when you’re experiencing it alone. So, if you can’t get outside, consider buying some beautiful indoor plants or watching a nature documentary. Why does nature strengthen our sense of connection? One possibility is
that it increases our sense of awe, which makes us feel like we’re a small part of a larger whole. 5. Volunteer. Volunteering is something that you can do from the comfort of your own home. For example, you can serve as a mentor in an online mentoring program or teach an online class. Just Google “online volunteering opportunities” and explore the many options. 6. Practice kindness. Research shows that performing acts of kindness can make you feel happier and more connected. You can do something small (like writing an online review of your favorite restaurant) or something big (like sending a care package to a lonely neighbor.) 7. Express gratitude. Sharing a heartfelt “thank you” is a great way to strengthen your sense of connection to others. Think of someone you’re grateful for but never adequately thanked
– maybe a caring medical professional or clergy member – and send them a note of gratitude. Research suggests that this practice will give you – and the other person – a boost. 8. Talk to strangers. When you go out, talk to a few of the strangers you encounter – like the person in line at the grocery store. Many of us are reluctant to talk to strangers, but we feel happier and more connected when we do so. And this is true for both extraverts and introverts! 9. Protect your mental health. If you start to feel lonely or depressed during the winter months, consider seeking professional help. 10. Have a positive mindset. Remember that being alone doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to feel alone. You can use the strategies listed above to hold you over until the Spring, when social life picks up again.
