Live Poultry Returns To Rockingham County Fair By ERIN FLYNN Daily News-Record

HARRISONBURG — The birds are back at this year’s Rockingham County Fair. Poultry will once again be allowed back at the fairgrounds south of Harrisonburg off U.S. 11 during fair week, which is slated for Aug. 15 to Aug. 20. Because of last year’s avian flu scare, Rockingham County Fair Association officials thought it best to ban chickens, ducks and turkeys from the fairgrounds, General Manager Jeff Ishee said. The fair association board voted to lift the ban at its meeting on May 25. “This county is known around the world as the turkey capital,” Ishee said. “That’s a big deal for us to get the chickens back.” To educate fair attendees about poultry’s history and economic importance, there will be displays and activities taking place throughout the week at the Virginia Poultry Center. For the first time this year, children can

also play in the center’s new kitchen addition, which is funded by an $1,800 grant from the Virginia Ag Council and American Ag Board. “It’s a mock-up country kitchen, and they can pretend to make eggs or fried chicken and play like little kids do,” Ishee said. Poultry is just one aspect of the fair’s agricultural offerings, which is the centerpiece of the weeklong affair. Returning this year are various farm animals, including sheep, goats and pigs. “One of the primary reasons people come to the fair is because of the animals,” he said. “The families really enjoy showing the kids the animals and walking around the barns and watching the shows.” A puppet show, called Agri-Puppets, will be offered as well, Ishee said. It aims to teach children about animals and where their food comes from. While ag is the centerpiece, the fair

offers many other attractions to appeal to various interests and ages. The midway will have 25 rides, and 11 food vendors will tempt visitors with fair favorites, such as funnel cakes and fried candy bars. The food will meet a much wider audience this year than usual. Ishee said “Carnival Eats,” a Cooking Channel show that focuses on the culinary creations found at American fairgrounds, will stop by. “They have pledged that they will be at our fair to feature our food,” he said. “They will be there for two full days to tape an episode for that series.” Ishee said remaining details, including the show’s filming schedule, are still being worked out. Country And Pop Music To Hit Mainstage Major Concerts Some Of Biggest Draws Of Fair Attendees By ERIN FLYNN Daily News-Record

HARRISONBURG — Country and pop music will be hitting the main stage during Rockingham County Fair week. Between Aug. 15 and Aug. 20, the Pepsi Grandstand is hosting A Night With the Legends, Hank Williams Jr. and KIDZ BOP Kids. Major concerts are some of the biggest draws to the fairgrounds just south of Harrisonburg off U.S. 11. Jeff Ishee, the fair’s general manager, said the music will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 15 with A Night With the Legends, a “traditional country music night” starring Mark Chesnutt, Joe Diffie and Diamond Rio. Chesnutt began his career in Beaumont, Texas, when he was 17. Since then, the 52-year-old has had 14 No. 1 singles and 23 top 10 singles. Diffie, throughout his career, has re-

leased 13 albums and had more than 20 top 10 singles. He is best known for his songs “Pickup Man,” “Third Rock From the Sun” and “John Deere Green.” Diamond Rio is a band from Nashville, Tenn., and its members include Gene Johnson, Jimmy Olander, Brian Prout, Dan Truman and Dana Williams. Since the band formed 1989, it has sold more than 10 million albums, received a Grammy Award and a Dove Award, and raised more than $1 million for nonprofits. Its most popular songs are “How Your Love Makes Me Feel,” “One More Day,” “Beautiful Mess,” “Unbelievable” and “In A Week or Two.” “I believe they have more than 20 hits between those three [groups],” Ishee said. “If they just play their top songs, I think
