WHAT IS PALM SUNDAY? “When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’” Luke 19:37-38 – NIV

Palm Sunday confronts us with expectations and hopes. On a first century road down the Mount of Olives, people gathered with a great sense of hope and expectations. God’s people had been hoping for a long time. On Palm Sunday they welcomed the one who they believed to be the fulfillment of their hopes. They joined with the crowds in celebrating the one that was the hope of their world. Their hearts

were pumping, and their excitement was contagious. Hope was so obvious that day. There are times in all of our lives when we are carried by hope. Hope keeps us going. When our lives are not what we want them to be, we can still hope. No matter how deep the sorrow or the pain, if we have hope, we can get through. But hopes can be dashed. The people had hoped for one who would give them a better future, one who would lead them to victory when their lives had known so much defeat, one who would save them from a life that seemed so futile. You do not have to be very old to think back to times when you had similar hopes. You hoped making the team or joining the right club would help you be popular; you hoped that relationship would last forever; you hoped for a cure; you hoped for a job promotion. You hoped…We have all experienced the pain of hopes being dashed. By the end of the week, the people who had celebrated Jesus’ entry

into Jerusalem walked away from a trial, a beating, a crucifixion, saying to themselves, “So much for that hope.” The people put their hope in the right person—Jesus—but they did not have enough hope. Their hope was limited to what Jesus could do today. If you are tired, weary, beaten down, lying in a hospital or in an urgent crisis, then you are aware of the importance of hope for today. Jesus had done many things to give people immediate hope. He had healed the blind and the lame; he had offered forgiveness to those who knew only guilt; and he had brought love to a world in desperate need of love. However, the people’s hope in Jesus for this week was inadequate. They had hoped for a quick victory, a temporary victory. Jesus came into Jerusalem to give them an eternal hope. Is that our need today? Not a “quick fix” hope but to know that, in Jesus Christ, we have hope for eternity. Let us fix our eyes on the one who does give hope for today but, greater still, gives hope for everyday that is coming.

Explaining the Christian Holy Season About one-third of the planet or roughly 2.1 billion people are Christians. Each spring, this large subset of the population celebrates the religious miracle that is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Lenten season is one of the holiest times of the year on the Christian calendar. This is a period of 40 days and nights that begins with Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent and lasts through Easter Sunday. Many Christians celebrate Easter, but may not know the significance or meaning behind certain days on the Lenten calendar. Here is a primer on the Lenten season for Christians and nonChristians alike.

Ash Wednesday In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the season when one prepares for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Ash Wednesday always falls 46 days before Easter and will vary according to the calendar. Ash Wednesday is a Holy Day of Obligation, which means parishioners are expected to attend mass to mark the beginning of the holy season. During the mass, celebrants receive ashes in the form of a cross on their foreheads. The ashes are made from burning the blessed palm fronds from last year’s Palm Sunday mass. In ancient times ashes were worn as a symbol of sorrow, repentance and acknowledgement of sins. Nowadays, ashes allow Christians to humbly display an outward sign that they are aware of their shortcomings and are cleansing their souls in the preparation for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection.

Palm Sunday Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and it is a day of obligation when Christians attend mass, where

they receive fronds of blessed palms. Occurring a week before Easter, Palm Sunday commemorates the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The gospels record the arrival of Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the street and shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David” and “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” to honor him as their long awaited Messiah and King.

Holy Thursday Holy Thursday is the Thursday which precedes Easter Sunday. It marks Jesus Christ’s last supper with his disciples. His act of breaking bread and offering it as His “body,” and sharing wine as His “blood,” has become an integral part of the Christian mass. It is representative of Christ giving up His life in place of our sins.

Good Friday Good Friday is also known as Black Friday, but not to be mistaken with the Thanksgiving Black Friday. It is the day that Jesus had to march to his crucifixion site carrying an extremely heavy wooden cross. Jesus was mocked, spit on, tortured, and forced to wear a crown of thorns during His journey after being arrested by Judas and then suffering at the hands of Pontius Pilate. After being nailed to the cross at His palms and ankles, Jesus suffered for six hours before He died. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the people.

Easter Sunday The holiest day of the season is Easter Sunday. On this day, Jesus rose from His tomb. Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and found Jesus missing. Jesus then approached her and showed how he was again alive. His disciples were shocked at the appearance of his resurrected self, furthering their faith in Him as the Son of God.

TIPS FOR VETTING CHARITIES Donating to a charity or nonprofit organization is a selfless act that pays dividends for the less fortunate. Whether you plan to be a financial donor or donate your time as a volunteer, your efforts help charities stay afloat and achieve the goals set forth in their mission statements. Many men and women struggle when it comes to choosing a charity with which to associate. With so many worthy charities, the vetting process can be difficult, as charities that warrant your time and money are just as easily found as nefarious organizations designed to mislead donors. When vetting a charity, consider the following tips. * Have some familiarity with the organization. Many people hope to contribute to a charity with which they have a personal connection. You might have volunteered with this

organization in the past or you or a loved one may have even benefitted from their services or programs. Such a personal connection can help you feel more secure about your donations or efforts and may even help you feel as if you’re giving back to an organization that helped you in the past. * Do your homework. If you aren’t very familiar with a charity but its mission statement strikes a chord, then learn as much about the charity as possible before making your decision to donate or volunteer. Don’t allow an especially persuasive telemarketer to make your decision for you. Instead, listen to what a solicitor has to say and then let them know you want to do more research before making a final decision. Visit the organization’s Web site, check out its rating from the Better Business Bureau or a charity evaluator like Charity Navigator and

talk to friends and family to see if they have any experience with the charity before making your decision.

Organizations that try to pressure people into making donations are most likely disreputable.

* Be wary of organizations that put pressure on you. An established charity won’t need to put pressure on you to donate. While charities and nonprofit organizations rely heavily on donors and volunteers to remain operational, their lights won’t be turned off if you don’t immediately make a donation. If solicitors try to pressure you into making a donation over the phone, politely end the conversation without sharing any personal information. While the holiday season presents a charity’s best time of year to raise funds, an organization will be just as happy to receive your donation after the holiday season when you have had ample time to gather information and make a more informed decision.

* Recognize that you might be a target. Criminals who run fraudulent charity scams target specific groups of people, most notably the elderly. Elderly men and women must be wary of potential con artists, who can be persistent in their pursuits. They often call frequently to establish a rapport in the hopes of tricking elderly citizens into making donations and sharing sensitive financial information. Elderly persons should be especially vigilant when vetting a charity, avoiding sharing financial information over the telephone and then discussing their donations with their children or loved ones who can help them determine whether an organization is legitimate or not.

Bridgewater United Methodist Church 540-828-0890 www.bridgewaterumc.com Handing off the faith of one generation to another, a great grandfather shares the stories of Scripture with his great grandson. But it is not just all in the family at Bridgewater United Methodist Church. A remarkable feature of this vital congregation is the interaction between the oldest and the youngest beyond family ties. Older members volunteer as classroom buddies supporting Sunday school teachers and the church’s child safety plan. The monthly children’s activities draw many adults, and Vacation Bible School can look like an all church event. Children’s Church on Sunday morning has a host of adult volunteers. Adult mentors are a prominent part of the confirmation journey for youth, and the youth may be found in the community washing clothes for the homeless and spending time with the residents at Bridgewater Retirement Community. It’s not unusual for the Children’s Choir to sing with the Sanctuary Choir. Senior Pastor Stephen Creech’s inspiring sermons creatively speak to the full range of generations and helps them relate to God’s Word each Sunday. Associate Pastor Jim Harris helps our youngest worshippers connect with Jesus and the congregation through his Children’s Time, often accompanied with a specially designed trading card. It’s not unusual for the Children’s Choir to sing with the Sanctuary Choir. Beyond age or status, faith in Christ is what binds us together, and following Christ is the vision we share for every generation.

Holy Myrrhbearers: Worshiping He Who Is Risen! The Orthodox Church is the ancient Church founded by Jesus Christ through his apostles in the Middle East 2,000 years ago. Holy Myrrhbearers is an Orthodox Christian Church in Harrisonburg, VA, serving the cities of the Shenandoah Valley including Harrisonburg, Staunton and Waynesboro and the counties surrounding them. We keep to ancient ways, following the Old Calendar (Julian) and other traditional practices such as head coverings for women, modest dress, confession before taking Communion, standing for the services, and the chanting of the Liturgy without instrument. Some of us were born Orthodox, but many of us are converts to the Faith. Our parish venerates the Holy Myrrhbearers, who went to Christ’s tomb to anoint His body with myrrh, not yet realizing that He was not dead, but Risen! They were the first to learn of Christ’s glorious Resurrection. Our Rector, Priest Gabriel Weller, was born and raised here in Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley and the Tidewater area. A former Methodist and UCC, he encountered the Orthodox Faith while he was in Seminary, he converted to the Orthodox Faith, and was ordained to the priesthood in 2009.
