Wedding Trends For Menswear By Justin McIlwee

efore a groom says “I do” to the love of his life, he has to say “I do” to a wardrobe. While many grooms will still opt for the black tie tuxedo that matches the wedding party’s colors, many men are choosing to break tradition and explore different options in sizes, styles, materials and colors. Ann Moody, the owner of Anna Joy’s Bridal and Formalwear and Tuxedo Corner, and Kevin Murphy, the general manager at Classic Tuxedo, explain the latest trends in menswear the groom and his entourage use to stay sharp on the big day.

Tuxedo Size A nd Color

For many years, when a man went to get fitted for a tuxedo, there weren’t many options of how he could wear that tux. Usually, tux pants were looser in the legs while jackets had wider sleeves. Today, however, before a man starts choosing

colors and materials, he first has to decide the style of his coat and pants. A groom has the choice of four different styles of tuxedo: traditional, modern, slim fit and ultra slim fit. The traditional fit is what grooms have known for years: fuller legs with pleated pants and a square jacket with no cut. Traditional jackets tend to have a wider lapel and the tux is fuller overall, not adhering to a groom’s body type. Modern fit is very similar to the traditional with a little more cut to the inside of the pants and the jacket. The lapel is slimmer and the jacket is more narrow through the body. It accents a groom’s figure more than the traditional. A slim fit and an ultra slim fit come with even slimmer lapels and narrower jackets. The jackets are also shorter while the pants are cut farther, hugging the legs. Moody said the slim fit and ultra slim fit are what people are using more

ties and suspenders with khaki pants or jeans,” she said. “The young man today is not one who traditionally dresses up a lot; it’s a little more casual world. We’re just seeing a change in formality.” Also on the way out are the days of solid color ties. Stripes, paisley and floral patterns, in colors that match bridesmaid dresses, are now the current trend. Seasonal ties, such as pastels in the spring and summer, and autumnal shades in the fall, are popular as well.

Socks A nd Shoes

Since many colors a groom wears are dictated by the colors of the wedding itself, Murphy said he’s seen many grooms and groomsmen wearing crazy colored socks to throw in a splash of originality. “In a lot of cases, when there’s not as much variety of color in the wedding party, they’ll have the groom and groomsmen do a little something fun with the socks,” he said. “It’s not as prevalent in the pictures until they decide to do a shoot that’s just for the groomsmen. That’s been something that’s been a surprise hit.” What goes over the socks, as Moody said, depends a lot on what type of personality the groom has. She said she’s seeing many men wear cowboy boots and construction boots instead

of the traditional tux shoe. Sandals are popular for beach weddings while Converse sneakers are worn by younger grooms. More traditional grooms Murphy said, are moving away from formal footwear. “A lot of guys are edging toward a more matte finish, a little less formal,” he said. “The patent leather, while still strong, are second or third place kind of style. Matte black or gray and matte brown especially. As a groomsmen gift, we see a lot of gentlemen buying designer shoes.” In the future, Murphy said he sees an influx of color on the horizon in the realm of men’s wedding fashion. “In the near future, we may see more variety in color,” he said. “There’s a lot of shades of blue that are coming down the pipeline, some more variations on burgundy and quite a lot of interest in the

velvet kind of looks. Even some greens, in coats especially. Those are all a little more fashion forward.” Trends, however, are always changing. What was once in style is now on its way out or vice versa. But no matter what the trend, Moody said that people are influenced by what they see around them, along with a major dose of personality. “I think Hollywood people kind of start a trend and people pick up on it,” Moody said. “People see it on TV, movies and Pinterest, and whatever company comes up with it, they’re advertising that look. People are very influenced by media and we’re influenced by what’s out there in the world. It’s a time period where people are not following tradition; they seem to rebel against what’s traditional. They want to do things that are very personal and unique.”

Q&A Musical Throwdown: Bands Vs. DJs For Your Wedding By Justin McIlwee

he dress is fitted. Tuxes are on order. Your favorite flavor has been chosen for a cake and it’s been decided that guests will be dining on a choice of chicken or fish. Now comes one of the most crucial decisions wedding parties have to make: When the couple dances for the first time, who’s going to be singing? Will it be a live rendition by a wedding band, or will an original artist’s voice echo through the reception hall from DJ speakers? “I, personally, feel there was a year or two where people were using their friends or their iPhones,” said Jessica Lail, the owner of It’s Your Day wedding planning. “[But now], typically they want a DJ or live musician for the ceremony, and for the reception, I’m seeing a divide of DJ versus band. DJ is never going away, but neither is band.” Recently, Lail took to Instagram to poll her followers to get their opinions on band vs. DJ. When the smoke cleared, DJs received 74 percent, while live bands were at 26 percent.

E3, a three-piece band, performs at a wedding in the Shenandoah Valley.

Despite the majority leaning toward DJs for weddings, Lail said she is seeing a recent surge of bands, especially in the Charlottesville area. Both have merit when it comes to wedding entertainment, it just depends on certain factors that are important to the couple. a wedding DJ at DJ Express Entertainment, also have opinions about the pros and cons of each.

Q: What are the benefits of going with a wedding band? Andy Jasper: The main positive attribute that a live band can offer as compared to a DJ is just entertainment value. There’s a visual component to a band performing. There’s an interactive presentation of live music that I think can help create an infinitely more memorable event. People can have a good time with a DJ, but you’re mainly interacting with music coming out of speakers, and that’s not inherently a special occasion in people’s lives. People hear music coming out of speakers all the time, but it’s not every day, month or year where someone has a great party interacting with a live band. A really good live band is something people will remember: the personality, the energy and the

performance for years, sometimes.

Q: When a couple is looking for a wedding band, what are some things they should be looking for to ensure they’re choosing the right band? AJ: I usually like to ask a couple what their vision for the event is. Different bands can help a couple realize a specific vision. If someone wants their wedding to be the craziest party of the century, you usually go with a band with lots of singers, maybe a big horn section, lots of choreography and a ton of energy and personality are going to help them. Other couples want their event to be a fun and relaxed time, for people to dance and have a good time; they wouldn’t want a band to take over the night. [For that], a band that might be smaller in size or one that plays relaxed and low-key music. I like to ask a couple to envision

Q: What are the benefits of choosing a DJ over a wedding band? Mike Pompeo: One of the biggest things is the choice of music. We have an abundance of music. We can go from the 1940s and ’50s all the way to 2018 and it’s the real music. It’s not a band trying to sound like the real group, which is sometimes very hard for a band to do. The band may not know half the songs you request.

Q: What should couples look for in potential wedding DJs? MP: I would make sure, first of all, that they accommodate you for

the ceremony [and] the style of music you want for your ceremony. Then, getting into the reception, it’s making sure they have the exact songs you want: the first dance, a mom and her son, father and daughter dance, cutting the cake song. You have to have fun things to do, like when they throw the flowers and you say, ‘I need all the single ladies out on the floor,’ you play ‘Single Ladies’ by Beyoncé, or having a confetti

cannon, party hats and poppers. You have to have all this kind of stuff ready. If you have to have a fog machine to make them enjoy a certain song, these are the things a DJ does.

Q: What sets a professional wedding DJ apart from a friend with an iPhone? MP: A lot of people try to do the thing with the iPhone and a set of speakers, and that’s just not the way to do it. You have to be able to
