‘Cabin Porn’ — cabins set in idyllic locations

Photos courtesy of Little, Brown and Company

AP Travel Editor

A luscious new book of photos called “Cabin Porn” isn’t inviting readers to hole up in the woods to look at naked bodies. It is inviting them to look at photos about holing up in the woods.

The book is the brainchild of tech entrepreneur Zach Klein, co-founder of Vimeo, who bought some land in upstate New York in 2010 with his wife and friends. They started collecting photos of cabins as “inspiration to guide us and motivate us” to build their own. Eventually,

All of that led to the “Cabin Porn” book, published by Little Brown, edited by Klein and aptly subtitled, “Inspiration for your quiet place somewhere.” Ironically, Klein says the title “Cabin Porn” is “difficult for me to justify” because “it was never a

fantasy. My friends and I were out there doing it.” “Cabin Porn” isn’t the only sign that cabins are having a moment. The New York Times’ T magazine recently proclaimed in a headline that cabins are the “New American Dream.” Pinterest is loaded with accounts like “Rustic Cabin Life” and “Cozy Cabins.” Students at Harvard’s Millennial Housing Lab just launched a project called Getaway, which offers tiny houses in rural settings for rent by the night for city dwellers looking for an escape. Why cabins? Simplicity and immersion in nature explain much of the appeal. “There’s something really satisfying about being reminded that life outdoors is really affordable,” Klein said. “You don’t need a McMansion to enjoy the woods.” But while cabins might be simple structures, the images in “Cabin Porn” are spectacular and compelling, even when the buildings are little more than ramshackle shelters tacked together from scavenged boards. The rustic settings are beautiful, on mountaintops and by the water’s edge, in deserts and the woods. And the dwellings’ designs are intriguing, from converted vehicles and silos to treehouses, pods, sheds and bungalows — along with more conventional woodframe homes with pitched roofs. The term “cabin” has a particular American sensibility, Klein notes, part of the narrative of taming the frontier and cutting down trees to build homes

and settlements. Log cabins symbolize “resilience and self-reliance,” he said. But Americana is not really the attraction for him. “What I’m drawn to is creating minimal comfort outdoors so that I can be as close to nature as possible,” he said. He also notes that rustic cottages are part of the culture in many places, especially northern Europe. The book’s photos range from a shack in a sheepherding camp in New Zealand to a boathouse on a lake in Germany. Cabin-love is also related to the tiny house movement. “The American dream is exhausting,” Klein said. “Having to live up to this model of largeness is really draining. People are drawn to the possibility that we can be happy with a lot less.” Sarah Barnard, a Los Angeles-based interior designer who specializes in sustainability and healthy living, has a number of clients who have high-pressure jobs and nice homes in the city, but own cabins for weekend escapes. “In the city, we cannot help but be influenced by fashion and our neighbors and advertising and all these things that impact how we purchase and how we decorate and what our daily lives look like,” she said. “Whereas cabin living allows us ... a kind of freedom from the confines of those social expectations.” Those inspired to pursue their own cabin in the woods might want to know, however, that reality can be more complicated than the ideal. Klein admits that the cabins he and his friends built at Beaver Brook “ran into problems,” from mice infestations to family members who couldn’t handle the lack of amenities. They’ve since built a building with plumbing and electricity “that’s weather-tight and rodent-proof, so we could be there all four seasons,” he said. “Now my mom will come to visit.” Klein’s sojourns in the woods have also left him with Lyme disease, which comes from tick bites and is common in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. It’s “a reminder,” he said, “that nature isn’t move-in ready. It’s not sterilized. It’s very much a force that has to be reckoned with. It’s humbling.” It’s also a good reason to have plumbing in your cabin. “We needed to make it easier for showers,” Klein said, “to create proper conditions so people could check for ticks and clean things.”

Autumn Joy Sedum lives up to its name By LEE REICH

Associated Press

For some visual joy in autumn, plant Autumn Joy Sedum. The plants’ domed flower clusters now smile skyward like heads of pink broccoli. Autumn Joy is, understandably, a stalwart of the late summer and fall flower garden. The flowers adorn the plants for weeks and weeks, not frozen in time like the more common flower of autumn, ’mums, but constantly changing. The initially green buds first open to pink, then the blossoms shade to rose, on to salmon bronze and finally to coppery red.

A good companion almost year-round The flowers make a nice companion to the golden yellow flowers of Goldsturm daisies, the lavender blossoms of

Frickart’s aster or one of the perennial, blue-flowered sages. For something more electric, pair Autumn Joy with the chartreuse leaves of Goldmound spiraea. Completing the picture are butterflies that play over the Autumn Joy blossoms and alight periodically to sip nectar. Although most dramatic in late summer and fall, Autumn Joy is also showy other times of the year. And the flower show doesn’t end with that coppery red because the flowers hang onto the plants, drying, into and through winter. While the flowers are still fresh, plunk them into vases to enjoy indoors. Autumn Joy is a succulent, as are cactuses, and its evergreen, fleshy, pale-green leaves look perky year-round, no matter what the weather.

Associated Press

This photo shows Autumn Joy Sedum’s flowers that offer a long season of beauty as they morph from pink to rose to bronze and, finally, to coppery red. Cosmopolitan and easy As a succulent plant, Autumn Joy thrives in abundant sunlight. Succulents also tolerate drought; no need to water this perennial — ever.

Wet weather does the plants no harm as long as the soil is well-drained. That said, even if the roots were to rot in wet soil, the tops, including the flowers, would live

on for a long time, the leaves getting along just fine, the flowers carrying on as if nothing were the matter. Eventually, though, wet soil will do in the plants. The way to ensure good soil drainage is to select a naturally sandy site for the plants or improve the drainage of an existing soil. Mixing plenty of organic materials, such as woods chips, compost or leaves keeps water flowing down through a soil. An alternative is to bring roots up above moist soil by planting on top of a mound, or in raised beds built up with some sandy soil. Besides its year-round good looks, Autumn Joy can be considered among the best perennials because it is practically indestructible but not invasive; rarely needs to be rejuvenated by being dug up and having only its young portions replanted; and is not

particularly bothered by pests. Even deer tend to leave this plant alone. Maintenance requirements are practically nil. Just tidy up the plant by removing spent flower stalks in late winter. If you want to multiply your own holdings or start some plants from a neighbor’s plant, Autumn Joy is also quick and easy to propagate. Stems or even just leaves poked into well-drained soil will take root. Or dig out and replant a piece of plant taken from the edge of an established clump. Since its introduction from Japan in 1955, this succulent has become popular and is widely planted. If you don’t yet have any, look around and experience some Autumn Joy. ——— Online: www.leereich.com/blog; leereich.com

Move over Edward Goucher, there is a new abelia in town. Actually there are several abelias that will absolutely take this from a ho-hum shrub to one that is dazzling in the landscape. All of a sudden you will find yourself looking at abelias for their colorful foliage, and flowers that will bring in both butterflies and hummingbirds. Actually there is a lot to be said for Edward Goucher, who developed this hybrid for the USDA in 1911. This abelia named after him has stood the test of time for more than 100 years. Now, however, there’s a new generation with mesmerizing foliage like Lemon Zest, Kaleidoscope and Mardi Gras. Each one offers great garden attributes. Lemon Zest, also seen in the trade as Hopley’s Lemon Zest, and Miss Lemon in the Southern Living Plant Collection, is simply stunning. Today I watched honey bees hitting on the light pink flowers. Plants that bring in bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are already winners in my book, but these leaves have the ability to really put on a show. The young leaves start off lemon yellow with a green center, and as they age the yellow gives way to a creamy white. So all growing season you have lemon, cream, green and pink flowers always showing out. Lemon Zest reaches about 3 feet high and 4 feet wide. It is recommended for plant hardiness zones 6-9 and will be everything from evergreen to deciduous, depending on your zone. As the name suggests, Kaleidoscope has glossy foliage that seems to be ever changing in shades of green, golden-yellow, red and orange. This would make it a winner even if it never bloomed. It is reaches 36 inches tall with a 4-foot spread and is environmentally friendly due to its pestfree nature. They do bloom, how-

Bulb care 101 After the bulbs finish blooming, Talcott and other Master Gardeners suggest you allow the daffodil foliage to die back. Do not cut the foliage back because the bulbs need that foliage to rebuild the energy stored in the bulb for next year’s blooms. For tulips, dig them up and give them away or add them to the mulch pile. Bulb experts like Brent Heath says the Hampton Roads climate is not conducive to tulips producing masses of flowers year after year, so it’s best to treat them as annuals. Feed the bulbs with a balanced fertilizer specified for bulbs.

POQUOSON, Va. — It’s the bulb-planting time of year for gardeners who want spring flowers. In Poquoson, Va., Master Gardeners plant bulbs each fall at the Poquoson Learning Garden — thanks to the donation of 10,000 bulbs over the past couple of years from Brent and Becky’s Bulbs (www.brentandbeckysbulbs. com). The garden features tulips, daffodils, dwarf irises, anemone and crocus. “A lot of tulips planted in the ground are susceptible to voles and hungry deer,” says Poquoson Master Gardener Noel Talcott. “All of our tulips have been planted in our empty raised beds, which held vegetables and cut flowers during the gardening season. We have had great success and so far have not had any issues with deer coming in to sample the foliage or blooms.” Root-eating voles can also bother bulbs, especially tulips, which Talcott recommends planting in pots or raised beds. “At our home, we layer tulips in large plastic pots, top with soil and plant violas or pansies on top,” he says. “Then we sink the pots in the ground up to the rim. In spring, the tulips come up through the flowers. After they are finished blooming, we swap out the pots with summer flowers. We put those pots back in the holes and those plants are protected from voles too.” For planting bulbs, the Master Gardeners use the method recommended by Brent Heath of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs. The process is simple: Scrape back any mulch, place the bulbs on the ground and cover with six inches of mulch. “This method works great in our mulched beds as well as in the raised beds,” says Talcott. “In the raised beds, we remove about four to six inches of soil, place the bulbs and then cover them with the removed soil. Some ways to feel at home with feng shui decorating

TNS

The philosophy of feng shui helps create balance and positive energy in any room. By Emmie Sahlan

Tribune News Services

Feng shui, meaning “wind and water,” is based on traditional Chinese philosophy that links man’s destiny to his immediate environment. You can decorate your home with feng shui by tapping positive “chi” energy from wind and water and creating balance through the art of placement. This involves arranging your living space in such a way that evokes feelings of comfort and safety, thereby enhancing happiness, health and prosperity.

Ideas for feng shui decorating:

disturbances and relationship issues. Should you need to place a mirror in the bedroom, avoid positioning it opposite the bed as it will reflect energy back at you when you are sleeping, causing sleep disruptions. The kitchen should be clear of clutter and free from bad smells to prevent negative energy from accumulating. Just as in other rooms, the kitchen has to be bright and well ventilated to attract good energy for wellness. Any furniture placed in the middle of the kitchen will disrupt the energy flow. Be mindful that sharp corners may cause bad energy to flow towards the direction they point at. Hence, it is advisable to have a round kitchen table instead of a rectangular or square one. Your stove is an energy source as it is connected to the passion within you. A well-functioning stove enhances good energy, including one that encourages good health. The stove should face the doorway, otherwise negative energy resulting in stress, anxiety and financial challenges will

How to Hire a Feng Shui Consultant:

When hiring an interior designer, look for one who is also trained in feng shui. Nowadays, more and more interior designers incorporate feng shui in their practice to cater to a sizable number of people who believe in feng shui philosophy. Interior designers have a huge network of people in their industry, and it shouldn’t take you long before you get recommended to one who is also a feng shui expert. In this respect, ensure that your interior designer possess a Feng Shui Society Accredited Consultants logo, giving you the assurance of professional feng shui service and high standards. Fees include a fixed

flat rate or hourly based on the number of rooms in the property, materials used, travel cost and a report. Work is done either on-site or off-site. Decorating your home with feng shui is one method you can tap into using ancient Chinese beliefs to promote over-

all wellness, harmonious relationships and good financial health. Remember to ask questions relating to feng shui style and recommendations to overcome any concerns based on existing room layout before you decide to engage the services of a professional consultant.

If this is so, it is best to put a partition or curtain to block the alignment to prevent positive energy from leaving through the back door. The space at the main door should be free and clear of clutter to

allow positive energy to fill the space. The living room is where much decoration using feng shui beliefs can be put to good use. The living room should be bright and decorated with vibrant pictures that evoke positive feelings, such as nature, food and abstract art. Allow as much light as possible. Combining round and square geometrical shapes in your decoration such as placing a round mirror on a square wall or positioning a round coffee table on a square carpet will create balance and harmony in the environment. The best position for a mirror using feng shui philosophy is to ensure that it reflects a beautiful view from the window. Although the bedroom needs to be airy and bright, it is not advisable to have more than three windows. If the bedroom has too many windows, the energy drawn will not accumulate well, affecting the family’s well being. Avoid placing big mirrors in the bedroom as this will affect the energy present, causing sleep

Cooking in style with new kitchen emodeling a kitchen can be a R tedious and difficult process. Doing it with a spouse takes that

process and increases its difficulty by a factor of at least 10. When my husband and I decided to remodel we spent weekend after weekend after weekend going from store to store to store choosing every aspect of the kitchen we envisioned having — then throwing out all of those ideas and going with something we could agree on. OK, I may be exaggerating a bit. I am pretty fortunate that my husband was pretty laid back about most things and went with what I wanted in most cases. After all, we did agree on the most important thing — it is my kitchen. Yes, it is his kitchen too, but I am the chef. The entire project was a hurryup-and-wait process. We have become so accustomed to watching renovations in 30 minutes or less on TV our mindset is in the “before and “after, not the getting from the before to the after. What I can tell you is that not one part of this project took 30 minutes or less. From meeting with contractors for estimates to the final touches, the process took about four months, which I hear isn’t bad. We hired Clearwater Custom Carpentry Construction — “C4 — in Lewiston. Chad and Tracy Shaw are the owners of the company. They came in at our budget, had great references and offered a timeline we were comfortable with. In the end they met all our expectations and even superceded some. When we purchased our house there were things that we didn’t like, but we saw the potential of the house. It had great bones. loves to see remodeling pictures. It’s like, “Oh look, you have no walls. The day I got the call from Largent’s that my stove and microwave were in was only made better by a text that followed from our contractor telling me the permits were approved and he would be starting the next Monday morning. The stove I chose was the Frigidaire Gallery with matching microwave. It has dual convection ovens, each large enough to bake a 20-pound turkey in, and a five-burner flat top. Also the best feature, which I didn’t even know about when we bought it, is the internal food thermometer in the top oven that will shut the oven off when your meat has reached the perfect temperature and alerts you that it is done. I left the choosing of the dishwasher to my husband, since he is the one who does the dishes most of the time. He did his research and we ordered a Bosch SilencePlus 46 dishwasher from Largent’s. It is so nice to have the dishwasher on and not have to turn the TV up just to hear it over the noise. It’s also nice to actually have your dishes get clean. One of the biggest improvements for me was going

happy with the service we received. Our cabinets are Thomasville natural maple cottage-style cabinets and the counter is quartz sole stone with a bullnose edge in vintage limestone. Our contractor put the cupboards in and a sub-contractor from Home Depot did the countertops, which are single piece stones for each cabinet, so there are no seams and the sink is an undermount sink. This allows us to have a smooth surface with a cleaner look. The backsplash is 12-inch glass mosaic tile from the Cedar Cove Collection. All of the colors are very earthy — shades of

browns and gold with white trim and yellow walls. My appliances and sink are all stainless and the backsplash has some gray tiles to tie it all together. The flooring we chose initially was out of stock by the time we needed it so we chose a flooring by Home Decorators Collection that was a little pricier, but I am so happy we did. I think the color, Sumpter Oak, just works better with the overall look I was going for and the price wasn’t really all that much more. The light color of the cabinets and floor offset the dark

WHITE BIRD – When people get to the age that brings thoughts of retirement they tend to begin to imagine what life will look like. Where they’ll live is a big part of the picture they see in their mind and being retired most people want a place that offers eye-pleasing scenery for them to gaze at in those years where they spend more time at home. Twin River Ranch is a subdivision located west of White Bird. It consists of almost 7,000 acres of forest,

steep canyons, creeks and meadows with 219 lots. Each property ranges in size from 20 acres to 249 acres, which at present includes about 70 houses. You don’t need building permits to build your dream house in the Twin River Ranch subdivision, but you will need to submit your house plans to the board of directors for approval. The subdivision is populated mostly by retirees and has all types of properties from the moderate to the luxurious, but nothing too over the top and nothing run down. The houses are all on wells and use

1938 Colonial offers charm, distinctive details By Rosa Colucci

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

OAKMONT, Penn. — If location is everything in real estate, Darlene Reeves believes you should be very exact about it. “Eleventh Street is the best street in Oakmont, she said, which is why she and her husband, Ray, were thrilled to find a house at 720 on the street for sale four years ago. “When my husband got a job that would take us back home to Virginia, we were like, ’But wait, we have to leave Oakmont?’ It’s bittersweet. So they have put the white two-story brick house on the market. The house was built in 1938 and has a level lot. A two-level turret, hardwood floors and other architectural features add to the charm. “We really like old

Designing with tile: Ancient craft gets new attention

Associated Press

These photos, provided by Ten Speed Press, show the Neisha Crosland Studio in the U.K. (left), the Stark House in San Francisco (center) and the Hillside House in Mill Valley, Calif. (right), from the book, “Tile Makes the Room,” by Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey. By KATHERINE ROTH Associated Press

Tile was an important element in interior design in many parts of the world for thousands of years, coveted for its aesthetic possibilities, functionality and longevity. Yet for a generation, the craft has been largely unexplored, relegated mainly to bathrooms and rooftops, say the authors of a new book. “It’s been untapped and underappreciated, but that’s changing very quickly,” says Catherine Bailey, who, with her husband, Robin Petravic, owns Californiabased Heath Ceramics. The couple won a 2015 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for their work encouraging creativity at Heath while remaining true to the company’s over-60-year history. They have written “Tile Makes the Room: Good Design from Heath Ceramics” (released last month by Ten Speed Press). The book is full of lush photos and practical advice about incorporating artisanal tile in interiors. The goal is to make designing with tile accessible to the uninitiated. Heath and other small ceramics studios are leading a resurgence of tile in home design. An expanded range of colors, textures, patterns — and prices — have made the medium more adaptable and accessible. Feras Irikat, design and marketing director for Lunada Bay Tile, a Los Angeles-based firm offering Japanese-inspired tiles, including some made with recycled glass, said, “Before the ‘70s, tile was everywhere, like permanent jewelry for your home. It slowed down a lot after that and became very boring. But it has started catching on again, and

there are more and more small companies putting their hearts and souls into it and doing really interesting things.” Bailey says “a lot of designers are finally rediscovering the incredible depth and range” tile offers. She and Petravic took over the Sausalito-based Heath Ceramics in 2003. The company, founded in 1948, was famous for tableware and tiles, and kept a close link between craft and factory production. “Tile Makes the Room” begins by looking at the couple’s 1890s Sausalito home, and Heath’s factories in Sausalito and San Francisco. “We don’t think of Heath as making tile so much as making objects that contribute to something bigger, like architecture or interiors,” they write. Tile, when combined with textile, wood and glass, can create a sense of permanence, timelessness, color and texture, and contribute to a cohesive overall design, they say. The book includes many kinds of tiles and architectural styles in interiors and a few exteriors. In chef Alice Waters’ Berkeley, California, kitchen, for instance, earthy green tiles surround a beast of a gas range, framing the copper pots and teakettle and providing a warm backdrop for a concrete counter. In a small Tokyo home, handmade tile from Fez, Morocco, set in a striking herringbone pattern in blue-and-white flooring, gives the feeling of rippling water meandering peacefully through the home. Elsewhere, tiles give spaces a clean and contemporary feel. A Heath design featuring cubes in gray-blues and reds adds depth and character to a study wall, and

both bedrooms. The level backyard is just three steps down from the deck. Mature trees add shade while a privacy fence keeps pets or children in. The lot size is approximately 55 by 108 feet. In addition to the one-car garage, there is room for three more cars in the drive-

way. The home features central air conditioning, forced-air heat and a composition roof. The street has a block party every year that will rank among the many fond memories that the Reeves have of the neighborhood. “Oakmont is like Mayberry. I could have been perfectly happy there forever,” she said.

in a garden in Sao Paulo, Brazil, graphic tiles with an undulating design in blue and white (designed by the Athos Bulcao Foundation) add a fluid, modernist touch. Even in all-white rooms, varying types of tile bring a sense of timelessness and depth. “The study of white tiles acts as a canvas for the material’s qualities,” the authors write. The inherent variation in artisanal tile “creates an installation that feels warm, soft and homey because of reflected

light, surface finish and texture,” as opposed to the antiseptic feeling of white tile in airport bathrooms or commercial kitchens. “All white tile is not the same, and if you get that, you’ve come a long way,” explains Petravic. The book ends by explaining the process of tile making. It considers the main types of ceramic tile: earthenware, porcelain and stoneware. There are also concrete tiles. The reader is taken through the process from start to installation.

We went with most of the subcontractors C4 had worked with before, but we had used Yochum Plumbing when we moved the washer and dryer out of the kitchen and built a laundry room in the basement. We were very happy with their work so we wanted them to also do the plumbing in the kitchen. They worked flawlessly with Chad Shaw to get the work done. The other subcontractors hired by C4 to do

work on the project did a great job, but I liked that he was willing to work with our plumber. And while there were some miscommunications along the way, with some of the subcontractors, about how we wanted a few things it all came together beautifully. I couldn’t be happier with my kitchen. All the work C4 and Yochums Plumbing did was impeccable from beginning to end and now I don’t have to worry about cabinet doors opening by themselves and my husband knows I will be smiling when I cook him dinner.

There is also a walk-in closet and master bathroom with a shower. The couple’s talents and love of art can be seen throughout the house , which resembles a museum in every aspect. The house has two bedrooms, a half bath on the main floor and the master bathroom downstairs. Downstairs there is an area where Robin has a large drum hanging from the ceiling where he can make music or beat out the frustrations of the day. There is also an outdoor shower for when Robin has been wood working or milling in the heat. The kitchen, located on the main floor, has a nice big pantry with one of Robin’s custom doors. The couple moved to the area three years ago from Alaska. They also did live in Montana, where they owned an art gallery. Many of the pieces from that gallery have been carried with them from Target Publications/Peggy Hayden Montana to Alaska to Idaho.
