BEDROOM PROJECTS ANYONE CAN MASTER LIKE A PRO By Lauren Sieben www.Realtor.com

When it comes to home improvement, the bedroom is easy to ignore. We often spend more time in the kitchen (or even the bathroom) than the bedroom, and guests are more likely to hang out in the living room than the sleeping quarters—which makes it tempting to treat the bedroom like a storage space instead of a refuge for relaxation. But these days, we need a fantastic bedroom more than ever. “The bedroom is meant to be a retreat, haven, and a space in which one can decompress, relax, and ultimately drift off into a blissful, deep, REM- lled sleep,” says Christopher Totaro, a Realtor at Warburg Realty and a professional contractor. If sweet dreams are your objective, keep reading to discover easy projects that any homeowner can tackle to take the boudoir from bleak to blissful.

1. UPGRADE YOUR BED WITH A DIY HEADBOARD

2. STREAMLINE CLUTTER

A new headboard is an easy and impactful way to make a statement in your bedroom—and the bigger, the better. “Nothing says elegant like an oversized headboard that doubles as an art piece,” Totaro says. To make your own headboard, start by determining the size you want, then head to the hardware store and ask for a piece of plywood to be cut to size and delivered. To nish your project, you'll need some fabric, upholstery foam, and a heavy-duty stapler. A new headboard is a great project for beginners, because anyone can learn the steps from watching YouTube tutorials or nding instructions online, Totaro says. “The key for beginners to have successful results is to do the research and make a detailed, step-by-step plan,” he says.

5. FRESHEN UP THE PAINT & DECOR We’ve said it before: Putting up a fresh coat of paint is a beginner-friendly job that doesn’t require any special skills. “Since any paint job can be redone, it is a great project for someone who is not sure they can be good at home projects,” says Docia M. Boylen, owner of Handyman Connection of Golden. If painting the whole room is intimidating, start with an accent wall—the wall behind the bed is a good option. “In order to pick the right color, search for ‘color wheel’ on the internet and nd a complementary color to what you have on your walls now,” Boylen says. Once you’ve decided on a color, make sure to protect your oors and furniture from drips with plastic sheets before you start painting.

And don’t forget the bed—the most important element of any bedroom. Aside from switching up the appearance with a new duvet cover or throw pillows, try incorporating different accessories to add personality to your bedroom. “If you have a comfy blanket in another room, bring it into the room and experiment with it on the bed, covering a pillow or hung over the foot of the bed or even the headboard,” Boylen says.

No one wants to sit on cold, wroughtiron or plastic deck chairs when the weather turns chilly, so be sure seat cushions and outdoor pillows are thick enough for the season. As the coronavirus hangs on into the fall season, having outdoor space is proving more valuable than ever. But now that cooler weather is on the way, stretching out the life of your porch, backyard, or balcony is the next smart step. Especially in colder northern climates, where summers are shorter, extending the use of outdoor areas is an increasingly essential step, says Ana Cummings of the eponymous design rm. FALL DECOR IDEAS THAT WILL SALVAGE YOUR 2020 By Larissa Runkle www.Realtor.com

We're not going to mince words: This year has been a dumpster re that makes us feel foolish for all the other times we whined about what a lousy year it was. And if you're anything like us, you're probably glad to see the calendar edge us closer to the end of this hellish spin around the sun. But we don't want to just get through this month, and the fall season ahead. We want to enjoy what's left of this year! And we've got the perfect pick-me-up to do just that: a fresh new look in your home with the hottest decor on the market today. We've consulted design experts to round up the hottest trends of the season. Whether you’re looking to refresh your bedroom, or put a bold new spin on your living room, here's what will help you ride out the rest of 2020—in style.

all-white dining set. “White dining sets are so versatile and a staple neutral,” says Stephanie Purcell, owner of Redesigned Classics. “You can pair them with any color scheme and make a statement in the most subtle way. Whether you want to add lots of oranges and reds for a traditional festive fall look, or keep it natural with browns and creams, a white dining set works well with either.” Add one of these staple neutrals to your kitchen by shopping this Brookwood dining set from Wayfair.

"But these new wallpaper looks are anything but frumpy—allowing for a sophisticated and updated look with its sleek minimalist design.” In fact, gray paisley wallpaper is the hottest new neutral, designers say—it's easy to pair with a pop of color to create a soft but modern look. This fall, Southwestern decor is seeing a resurgence, designers say, but it's being incorporated in a more modern, eclectic way. "Southwestern wall hangings are showing up more and more again as the interior design world has gotten incredibly saturated with bohemian rattan and greenery designs," Huffman says. "A longhorn skull is a way to maintain the natural, rustic feel of boho design in a way that’s more unique and varied ... and is the perfect way to add a bit of visual intrigue to your wall this fall. “The mix between light and dark, feminine and masculine make it a totally trendy piece to incorporate in your interior design," Huffman adds. OUTDOOR PROJECTS YOU CAN DO OVER FALL AND WINTER By Jamie Wiebe www.Realtor.com

But you don't have to wait that long. Fall is actually a great time for planting; with some care, a little autumnal attention can mean a beautiful spring garden. "Many common bulbs, like tulips and daffodils, will bloom great in spring when planted in the fall," says Chris Johnson, the owner of True Value Hardware in Navarre, MN. Pick your bulbs carefully. The best ones "will be rm to the touch," Johnson says. A few inches of mulch on top will keep them safe all winter.

If you weren't one of the bajillion people jumping on the quarantine garden trend these past few months, you might think your chances of a producing a plentiful bounty in your own backyard have slipped away, along with summer's warmer temps. We've got good news! If your green thumb is still itching for action, it's not too late—there are a number of outdoor projects that can still be carried out when the mercury drops. In fact, fall and winter can be an ideal time to tackle some of these critical items on your to-do list. Here are eight cold-weather projects You might think the length of your grass that promise to rejuvenate your outdoor doesn't matter heading into winter. Who's space come spring. going to see it under a blanket of frost and snow, anyway? But it's about more than just aesthetics. Some experiments fail. take a little bit longer to go green.

4. SPRAY YOUR WEEDS

Wouldn't it be nice if your lawn emerged verdant and weedless (halle-freaking-lujah!) in the spring? We think so, too. That's why you should start murdering that unwanted greenery now. How? As it turns out, your grass is soaking up any nutrients it can nd in preparation for the long, cold winter—and so are the weeds. "Don't wait until spring to spray for weeds like dandelions or creeping Charlie," says Johnson. "If you spray them, they'll not only soak up nutrients, but also the weed killer." As a bonus, because it's getting chillier, you won't have to worry so much about visitors or pets coming through or accidentally consuming the herbicide.

5. AERATE YOUR YARD If want your outdoor space to look lush and green once the snow melts, Johnson says, aerating your lawn is a great rst step. "It will get air, nutrients, and water into the roots and help produce a stronger lawn," he says. Aerators are cheap and can be found at your favorite home improvement stores. You can even buy specialized sandals if you'd prefer to stomp your way to a perfect lawn. Once your lawn is aerated, give it something to munch on before the rst frost. Purchase a late-season fertilizer, which will help the grass retain vital nutrients during the winter.

6. TRIM YOUR PERENNIALS Snails and slugs spend all autumn chowing down on your beloved perennials—but you can stop them in

7. PREP YOUR GARDENING SUPPLIES It might be too chilly to garden, but you can still get ready for when temperatures rise again. Hopefully, you've disconnected and drained your hoses at the season's end to prevent them from freezing—but why not also get your sharpest tools in shearing shape? Fix squeaky screws, and de-rust and sharpen any blades (and replace if needed) in order to save yourself time come spring. Your local gardening or hardware store might offer a tool sharpening service, but this is also a job you can tackle yourself with a sharpening stone or grinding wheel.

8. BUILD A FIRE PIT Most winter yard to-do's won't pay off until spring, when the warm weather gives you a good look at the fruits of your hard labor. But here's a fun project that promises to make your backyard usable—even on the chilliest day: Build yourself the biggest, best re pit. Whether you like the look of stone or want to build a brick basin, there are DIYs for any style of re pit you can imagine. (Just make sure to check local regulations rst. Some municipalities ban re pits or have restrictions on where they can be built.) For those on a modest budget, you can still build a kick-butt re pit. "It sends energy to the roots for next spring and results in healthier spring beds," he says. And it keeps your yard looking orderly during the winter, as opposed to overgrown and very, very sad.

Laurie March, home design expert and host of The House Counselor on HGTVRemodels.com, says this is one of her favorite budget-friendly tricks. "They double as functional art when leaned against, or hung on, the wall, and truly step up your hosting game when presenting a beautiful spread for your guests," she says.

Iconic Architecture. March says for spaces craving more architectural detail, add faux ceiling beams, which can quickly and a ordably transform the look of a space. "They can also give you the opportunity to add additional pendant light xtures without having to open the ceiling," she says. "When it comes to lighting, dimmers are a fast and budget-friendly update that can really transform the vibe of a space— especially when layering di erent light sources." Paint can also highlight the good bones of a home. It's a great resource in a cosmetic update. "If painting all of your cabinetry feels daunting, consider painting just your island or lower cabinets," says March. "The twotoned kitchen is a strong, simple trend that's been doing well for over a decade." She also recommends painting the ceiling to add an unexpected design element that's often overlooked.

says Jaime Rummereld, the other half of Woodson & Rummereld’s House of Design. “Even small changes to cabinet pulls and light xtures can be incredibly impactful when it comes to personalizing a kitchen." Layering accessories—like a durable yet stylish rug, a potted plant, and a vintage ceramic crock to hold your cooking utensils—is essential. If you're looking to take on a more daunting project and you have the wall space, March says adding open shelves to the kitchen will give you more storage, plus a spot to display any beloved dishes and glasses. "Leave the mismatched items inside the cabinet, and curate a pleasing vignette on the open shelves that reminds you of travels or happy moments," she says.

Woodson and Rummereld frequent online retailers like 1stdibs and Olde Good Things, as well as Los Angeles–based Wertz Brothers.

CONTRAST OLD AND NEW

Bringing out the soul of a kitchen often requires mixing old and new to create a harmonious e ect. “While incorporating your own style or paying homage to the original era of the home is so important, incorporating modern touches can truly bring the space to life and allow it to be highly functional for modern-day living,” says Rummereld. “Simple, contemporary touches can coexist beautifully with vintage or antiquestyle pieces.” March says while it might seem obvious, updating cabinet hardware "is a tried and true way to give a little lift to your space." WHAT IS BELGIAN MODERN DESIGN?

A MODERN FARMHOUSE-HYGGE MASHUP By Jennifer Kelly Geddes www.Realtor.gov

What is Belgian modern design? This o shoot owes some of its popularity to Scandinavian chic (hygge, anyone?), while others call it a mashup of modern farmhouse and minimalism. "Belgian modern design is a style that extols spare rooms lled with natural and worn materials, including stone oors, distressed oak furnishings, mottled plaster walls, and lots of real bers, especially heavy Belgian linens in pale, neutral colors," explains Michael Boodro, veteran editor and host of The Chairish Podcast. This versatile style can be incorporated into many home decors thanks to its simplicity.

It also echoes notes of biophilic design, which relates to nature, adds Karen Gray-Plaisted of Design Solutions KGP. Several big-box stores o er furniture, lighting, and case goods with clean lines and quiet palettes to complement this aesthetic. And updating to this style doesn't require big bucks as knocko s are basically as good as pricier originals, says Beverly Solomon of the eponymous design rm. She recommends consignment shops and yard sales for quality originals, but notes that few can tell the di erence between welldesigned 1930s pieces and those made today. Here's more about Belgian

modern design history, its color scheme, and where to get the look.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BELGIAN MODERN DESIGN Credit for this decor style goes to Alex Vervoordt, the Belgian antiques dealer who began to renovate a group of houses in Antwerp 50 years ago. "His poetic vision and unique ability to merge elements as diverse as farmhouse furnishings, Dutch paintings, and medieval tapestries struck a chord," reports Boodro. Belgian modern caught on in the U.S. 15 years ago, after the publication of Vervoodt's

HOW TO LAYER AREA RUGS AND PULL OFF THIS HOT TREND LIKE A DESIGN PRO By Jennifer Kelly Geddes www.Realtor.com

Area rugs bring warmth and style to the living room, bedrooms, and other similar spaces in your home. Traditionally, a single rug will su ce, especially when it's accessorized with other types of furniture. You may be missing out, though, on the potential to add even more color and texture to your room. Get bold with your decor, and consider this designerapproved trend: the layered look. By topping a large area rug with a smaller accent rug, you increase the visual interest in the space. And because rug options abound, you can play with a wide variety, without committing to a

single type. Feeling a little hesitant about mixing patterns and colors? We get it! Pulling o the layered look may seem like a tactic that requires a trained eye (i.e., the experience of a design expert), but the trick here is to embrace the clash. So gather up all the oor coverings in your home, and let the creativity begin. To help you put together the most compatible layers, here are some tips from design pros. Check out which rooms benet from more than one rug, as well as our quick and easy guide to the best rug pairings.

STICK TO TWO LAYERS Layering rugs gives you license

to have a little fun—but don't go rug wild!. As a rule of thumb, you can layer two or three rugs at a time, but experts say that two is considered the sweet spot. "You don't want to get too crazy by layering lots of colors or patterns that will make the space look too busy or disjointed," says Drew Henry of Design Dudes.

START WITH LARGE ROOMS AND SPACES The living room is the ideal location for layered rugs, in part because you'll probably have more space to play with to showcase your e orts. The same goes for an outdoor space or patio where there's room for allweather and washable rugs.

As for rooms that you should avoid, at least when you're rst trying out this look? "I'd refrain from layering rugs in a dining space, as it's too hard to push chairs in and out without getting the legs caught in the fabric," says Henry. Ditto for bathrooms. "In a bathroom, a layered design adds too many fabric elements in a wet space," Henry points out.

MATCH COLOR FAMILIES

bottom, with a patterned rug on top that's in the same color family," says Karen Gray-Plaisted of Design Solutions KGP. "Though you can also do the opposite, and place a solid rug over a patterned one."

SAVE MONEY WITH LAYERS Do you covet a pricey rug but can't a ord it in a large size? Layering is the x here, too. "Use a cheaper option, like a jute rug, as your base, and layer the smaller version of your desired rug on top," says Henry. "This way, you'll get the look you want without busting your budget." And don't forget to place a rug pad under your bottom layer, adds Gray-Plaisted. This will protect oors and help your rug live a longer life.

COMBO NO. 1: SISAL RUG + FAUX COWHIDE

By all means, don't be afraid to experiment with color (it is your house, after all). But you'll have Faux animal hides are a classic in the most success if you stick the eld of rug pairing, especially within the same color groups. when they're combined with a "I prefer a solid rug on the natural, neutral rug.

COMBO NO. 2: JUTE RUG + VINTAGE RUG

Another animal skin that's perennially popular for pairing is sheepskin—both the real deal and faux-fur selections. Stepping out of bed onto the deep pile of soft sheep fur is an upgrade worth making in your bedroom rug game. The best part? A smaller sheepskin rug can be combined with nearly any type of rug, from sisal to patterned. "I've thought about placing a patterned runner with a sheepskin rug along each side of the bed," says Gray-Plaisted. "You can do the same at the foot of the bed."
