A backyard like no other

scenery, even on a rainy day. Bob and Alice have created a natural, forested backyard that can be enjoyed much of the year, with several natural seats and benches located along the creek, near the waterfall and by the wishing well that Bob built around the natural spring they discovered when building the house.
As a matter of fact Bob has basically designed a forest in their backyard. He likes to call it a serendipitous garden.
He and Alice moved to Pullman and purchased a lot in 2000. They were building their house when the contractor, who just happened to own the lot next to theirs, discovered a spring while excavating. This gave Bob, an electrical engineer by trade, the idea to create a waterfall, two ponds and a babbling creek running through his yard. The first pond was finished in 2001 and from that came the babbling brook and second pond in 2002. In 2003, his 10-foot cascading waterfall was finished. Each provides different pieces of the natural soundtrack you enjoy while wandering through the yard.
The spring supplies the water for the ponds, creek and fall. At the end of the waterfall and creek are ponds where grasses
This discovery got the contractor and Bob talking. The house would need to be built in a different spot than originally planned. So the contractor sold his empty lot to the couple and they decided to build their house on the second lot. Bob wanted his yard to feel like a natural park, so he brought in dirt -- a lot of dirt. And he created hills where he planted fruit and evergreen trees, as well as wild grasses, ferns, roses and other flowering plants, most of which are native to this region. Exceptions include the gingko, which is native to Canada, and tree peonies which are native to China. He was even able to get permits that allowed him to harvest plants from the White Pine National Forest. “I love the smell of the pine,” Bob said. “Most of these trees were between 5- and 6-feet tall when we planted them.” Now they tower over everything, blocking out the neighborhood around them. He planted several varieties so that if there were ever a blight or infestation he wouldn’t lose too much of the vegetation. He also brought in drift wood and rocks of varying sizes, to which he introduced mosses, creating many micro-habitats like an actual forest would sustain. Throughout the yard there are several trails, much like the ones you would find in a nature reserve or national park. The yard doesn’t require weeding and there is only one small grassy area -- so small that it can be mowed in less than 15 minutes. From the deck off the back of the house is a bridge that takes you to the upper part of the backyard where Bob fashioned a wood gazebo, much like you would find in a smalltown park. From there you can look out over this vast green landscape and enjoy the

and lily pads provide vegetation for large koi fish. The sounds created by the waterfall, creek and ponds differ depending on where you are in the yard. The waterfall provides the rushing water sound that makes you want to breathe deep. The babbling creek gives you a desire to stop and smell the roses. The slow runoff of the creek into the pond washes away your cares. “You would never know you were in a subdivision if you just saw the backyard,” Bob said And he is right. Upon entering this yard you are instantly transposed to a place where you feel relaxed. One where stress washes away and you feel the need to have a backpack and hiking boots. The stress from everyday life disappears and you just feel at ease. You breathe deep and your lungs appreciate it. The yard was a labor of love Bob and Alice didn’t mind. “I used to try to explain what I was doing and show her pictures,” Bob said. “And she would just let me do my thing.” With such an oasis to enjoy one may think,
The couple developed a love for riding trains after visiting the Kitsap Live Steamers in Port Orchard, Wash. They enjoyed the steamers so much they found themselves traveling there five to six times a year, but it left them wanting more. They later discovered a place in Deer Park, Wash., where there was about 3,000 feet of track they could ride steamers on. The couple’s hobby got Bob wondering if he could create a track for the couple to enjoy at home. First, he decided to check with his neighbors. The engine isn’t as loud and doesn’t create the vibration a full size train does, but there would be noise and a little rumble. Each of the couple’s neighbors signed an agreement that they would not have a problem with him having a running steamer in his yard. “I got all the neighbors to sign the agreement,” Bob said. “Up and down within five houses. None of them are here anymore.” Next, Bob looked into city zoning and permitting to be sure he could in fact have a fully operational train that could carry passengers on his property in city limits. Discovering there were no real rules governing such a thing, he decided to go forward with

his plan. “My yard was already landscaped, Bob said. “So trying to put a train in was going to be a unique challenge. He would need to find space in between the mature trees, the grape vines, the bridge, the gazebo, waterfall, creek and the ponds. out railroad ties and determined the grade for the tracks. He designed and engineered a bridge and tunnel. That’s right, not far from downtown tucked behind an average-looking house is a forested wonderland that can be enjoyed from the bustle of a steamer. It took him about seven years in all to complete the project.
“It was difficult to squeeze it in between all the established trees, Bob said.
“I laid it out for about a year, Bob said. “And then I committed to it.
In 2006, his journey began. Bob first determined where he could lay tracks. He laid
He did the project in phases. The rail bed, trestle and tunnel each took about two years to complete. The only part that went quick was actually laying the track. The driveway required breaking out the concrete and then laying the track and filling in concrete around it. The track takes the train right into one of the bays of the couple’s two-car garage, where the train cars are kept when not in use. The train was ready to ride in 2014. Bob has three engines, two of which he keeps in Pullman and the third that he leaves in Port Orchard, Wash. Once you board the train in the driveway it takes you clockwise past fruit trees and grape vines, over a trestle that looks down on the creek and travels under the bridge, and past the gazebo, wishing well and waterfall before taking you through a tunnel back to the driveway. The train actually adds to the enjoyment of the

ith shopping that needs to be done and supplies that need to be gathered for busy days ahead, preparing for the back-to-school season can descend into near chaos for many parents. When long school days leave little time for organization and decluttering, any home can quickly become a mess. According to a survey conducted by ClosetMaid, 92 percent of parents describe their kids as messy. Among those same parents, 80 percent give their kids chores and about half of them end up doing the work themselves to ensure it’s done properly. Two out of three of the parents surveyed said their children’s messiness often leaves them in bad moods. Considering one of the hardest things about back-toschool season is creating an organized routine, the time to start is now. When every room in the home can use some reorganization, decluttering in preparation for busy school days can be overwhelming. A smart place to start is in the room you and your kids waste the most time looking for things. These other useful tips can help you take it from there:
Tackle your child’s closet and take inventory of what’s in it. Before you buy anything new, go through and get rid of torn clothes and items that no longer fit. It can help you see what is needed and ultimately make it easier for them to get dressed in the morning.
Create a drop zone. Contain clutter before it spreads too far around the house with ClosetMaid’s KidSpace, a line of juvenile storage furniture featuring a storage locker that is perfect for backpacks, coats, sports equipment and supplies. Since it’s kid-sized, children can be responsible for making sure their belongings are put neatly away.
Create a comfy homework station. Designate a special space, perhaps under a lofted bed, that can keep kids organized, productive and focused on work while helping inspire creativity.

Download productivity apps on your phone.

Creating your sanctuary
By Peggy Gary // TPC Marketing // Photos contributed by Peggy Gary

f you’re like most people you have spent the past several months trying to achieve the backyard oasis that many of us crave. You have spent countless hours pulling weeds, mowing the lawn, planting flowers, trees, shrubs, maybe a garden, watering and fertilizing. There has been sweat, a few choice words and possibly blood and tears. And at the end of the summer you feel like you spent so much time working in the yard you forgot to enjoy it. That is unless working in the yard is your way of enjoying it, like it is for Carlene Baune of Lewiston. “I love working outside in the yard, she said. “I really, really enjoy it. Carlene has been working to achieve the perfect yard for years and admits it’s never really done. “Sometimes I change my mind about something, she said.
of her plants depended on. So, she incorporated some umbrellas to shield those plants.
Her artistry can be seen in every corner. The lot was bare when Carlene and her husband, Doug, bought the house. And like a blank canvas, she has worked her way to what is now a perfectly landscaped tapestry.
“It’s a process. If something doesn’t work, you just pull it up and plant something else, Carlene said. “Or if I don’t like the way it looks, I just take it out and plant something else there.
But it is an ever-changing work in progress. She recently had to remove some trees and that took away some of the shade she once had in the yard -- shade that some
A few years ago they removed the original wood privacy fence that encompassed the backyard and replaced it with a white vinyl fence. Then they took the wood from the original fence to someone who repurposed it into birdhouses – some of which now have a place in the yard. They also gave some of the birdhouses to their kids for Christmas that year.

season. She finally figured out how to get the potted mums to come back like ones that are planted in the ground. Carlene uses pots for many of her plants so that she can move them around, switch them out and protect them in cooler weather. It allows her to create different spaces within her yard depending on the time of year or backyard activity. She often finds plants on sale that are “sad lookingâ€? and nurses them back to life like only the best green thumbs can. “Sometimes though I throw them out,â€? she admits with a laugh. From the angels and other figurines that adorn areas of the yard to signs welcoming friends, Carlene’s yard is not only an inviting place but it is comforting. Much of the yard art she finds at yard sales. She also has a number of angels made from ceramic and cement casts that friends and family have given to her over the years. outbuilding with several of the angels has a special place in her heart. Years ago she had some health problems that kept her from spending as much time in her yard. It was during this time that she found special comfort in angel figurines. She has a spiritual connection to this spot, because it reminds her to be strong. “This is my sanctuary,” Carlene said. “You know if I am uptight I can come out in the yard and I can just feel the stress leave me.” A cast-iron fence and two rows of roses separate the pool area from the rest of the yard. Most of the rose bushes are 20-plus years old. In all, she has 40 rose bushes of differing colors and varieties in her yard. They also line the

privacy fence on the other side of the pool. Along one side of the house Carlene has created a pathway to her lush oasis. One side is the same shabby chic design element that she uses to line the privacy fence in much of the backyard. She incorporates metal, stone and wood yard ornaments among solid and grouped plantings. On the other side of the pathway against the house is a line of several black storage cans with everything from soil to stones to mulch. Collectively, all the things she uses regularly in her yard keep it looking like something out of a magazine.

s homeowners become increasingly aware of the impact their homes can have on the environment – and on their health – making eco-conscious choices is as important as ever. From controlling the types of materials used within your home to keeping an eye on indoor air quality, these tips can help you create a healthier, more earth-friendly indoor environment.

Replace air filters. Older, dirty air filters can circulate dust, pollen and other particles throughout your home. They can also cause your air conditioner and heater to run less efficiently, which can result in higher energy consumption. Rather than pushing potentially harmful dust particles into your house and causing your systems to work overtime, inspect your air filter often and change it regularly. You might also want to consider installing a whole-home air purifier or placing portable air purifiers in frequently used rooms.
Use a water filter. Depending on where you live, different contaminants could reside in your tap water. Rather than risk consuming these contaminants or drinking bottled water, which can generate significant waste, consider purchasing a refrigerator with a filtered water option, attaching a water filtration device to your faucet or using a filtered water pitcher.
Ditch plastic food containers. Some plastics are not as high quality as many think and may contain toxic materials, making them potentially harmful – especially when used for storing food. Instead, opt for glass, silicone, cloth or stainless steel storage containers, which are friendlier to the environment and pose fewer toxicity risks. Plus, many of these containers can be placed directly in an oven or microwave to safely reheat food.
Reduce energy and natural resource usage.
Install eco-friendly insulation. Certain materials in your

Try installing timers on your lights so they turn on only at specified times. To take it a step further, consider installing lighting with vacancy sensors that automatically shut off the lights when a room isn’t being used. Choose energyefficient appliances, lowflow toilets and consider adding a rain barrel outside to collect rainwater, which can be used for chores such as watering plants, irrigating the lawn or washing your car. Although it may not be practical to implement all of these ideas at once, little by little you can make small changes that add up to a big difference.

Renovations in every room
Family Features // Photos contributed by Getty Images

f your favorite room is outdated and dingy, a renovation may be all you need to make the old feel new and to fall in love with your home all over again. Upgrading your home can be a big job, and unless it’s part of a pre-move-in plan, few homeowners find it practical (or even possible, from a budget standpoint) to execute a large-scale project. However, tackling the updates one room at a time and focusing on small changes that bring big returns can put those overdue enhancements well within reach.
Kitchen It’s the heart of the home, and it’s where many homeowners sink big money to make upgrades. Kitchen renovations don’t have to require a second mortgage though. Re-facing rather than replacing cabinetry can bring about a whole new look for a whole lot less money. This is a good option when the existing cabinets are still in good working condition and you’re just looking for an aesthetic change. Other smallscale options include swapping out the countertop and sink, changing the lighting fixtures and updating tired floors with contemporary wood or tile.
or tying the color scheme together with a new area rug.
Bedroom In your private sanctuary, all the typical options for updates apply for sure. However, this is a space where the furnishings can be an especially impactful
Bathroom When plumbing is involved, project costs can skyrocket, but there are some relatively simple ways you can give your bathroom a facelift on a modest budget. For starters, swap out all the fixtures from lighting to faucets. A new vanity is another instant upgrade, whether you opt for an updated version of the original or select a whole new style for a completely fresh look. Also consider upgrades that can increase natural light and fresh air without compromising privacy, such as the addition of skylights to your ceiling, or “fifth wall,” which can completely change the lighting dynamic of the room. In addition to balanced, natural light, skylights like those from Velux can open to help refresh your space and keep it odor- and moisture-free. For extra style and light control, consider complementing the room’s decor with skylights featuring colored blinds, which are available in more than 100 colors and styles, and also offer remote control operation for convenience in raising and lowering the blinds and opening skylights to let in fresh air. Learn more about making the fifth wall part of your renovation plan at whyskylights.com. A common space where the family gathers is likely to sustain the greatest wear and tear, and because you spend so much time there, it’s also a room where you’re likely to find a list of things that irk you. Creating a new color scheme is a simple fix that transforms the space, but changing the palette of the walls is just the beginning. Also consider taking your redesign to the ceiling with vibrant colors, creative wallpapers or even exposed beams. way to influence the ambiance, especially if a construction project in the room where you sleep is impractical. Changing out the style of the bed frame and complementary pieces creates a whole new vibe for the room. Then bring in a new collection of textiles for the bedding and drapery to help round out the pseudo-renovation.

or many homeowners, aesthetics and function are the primary considerations of a kitchen renovation. However, before you lay out your space and start selecting colors, there is another essential factor to explore: the materials you will use for each feature. In fact, there are numerous factors to consider as you narrow down your options. Giving special attention to the material composition of your kitchen, particularly when it comes to the aspects that take the heaviest use – the floors, sink and countertops – can help ensure your renovation stands the test of time.
Flooring Though often taken for granted, the floor is generally the kitchen feature that sustains the heaviest use over time. Whether your tastes tend toward tile, wood or another option altogether, there are still numerous variables to explore. Tile is an excellent choice for the kitchen because it stands up well to the heavy traffic and spills common in that space. However, tile can also be slippery and can be uncomfortable if you spend long amounts of time on your feet in the kitchen. Ceramic tile is the easiest to install but not as resistant to damage as porcelain or stone tile. The latter options require more skilled installation, and stone especially tends to be more expensive. You’ll also need to pay attention to factors like water resistance and texture, both

of which affect safety and how easily the floors can be cleaned. When it comes to wood, one of the first decisions is whether you prefer engineered or solid hardwood. Engineered versions tend to offer greater durability and flexibility in installation while the texture and appearance of solid hardwood are its strongest appeals. Other variables include the wood type, which further affects the look and strength. Oak is most common, but other traditional selections include options like maple or cherry and specialty woods like teak or bamboo. Plank width influences overall aesthetic, with slimmer boards lending a more modern look. Color is also a consideration, as you’ll need to determine whether you want to match, complement or contrast your cabinetry.
or a modern take on vinyl may be more to your liking.
Sink Identifying the shape and size of the sink you need can help narrow down the options for this aspect of the renovation, but considering the abuse this vessel endures, this is one place the material is especially important.
Classic stainless steel is not only practical, it’s also extremely versatile. It complements any kitchen and is a favorite of enthusiastic cooks and designers alike. While stainless If something a little less traditional is more steel’s neutral color and sleek looks work your speed, an option like foot-friendly cork with a wide range of kitchen styles, it’s most often found in contemporary, professional-style kitchens. character. When your kitchen requires both rich color and a rock solid design, a composite sink will deliver. An option like Kohler’s Cairn sink offers a transitional style to suit contemporary and traditional kitchens alike, but it’s also made of Neoroc, a matte-finish composite material designed for extreme durability and unmatched beauty. Richly colored to complement any countertop, Neoroc resists scratches, stains and fading and is highly heat- and impactresistant. Learn more at kohler.com.
Countertops In a bustling kitchen, hot pots, sharp edges and spills mean the counters can take a real beating. That’s what makes stone a favorite choice for this surface. Natural stone like granite or quartz is hardy, but engineered options offer even greater resilience. Options like marble or limestone deliver beauty similar to natural stone but these softer materials require more care and caution. Concrete and wood are popular and stylish alternatives, but their susceptibility to stains and other imperfections may make them impractical for a busy family. For the budget-conscious renovation, there are ample options in laminate, which falls in the mid-range for durability, to achieve an eye-catching look for less.
Selecting a Sink Materials aside, there are many factors to consider when choosing the right sink to complete your new kitchen. Installation • Top-mount sinks extend above the countertop surface. This type is the
easiest to install and is often used with laminate counters.
Smart Divide sinks: Available exclusively from Kohler, these sinks feature dividers half the height of conventional doublebowl sinks for the openness of a single bowl and the function of a double bowl.
• Under-mount sinks are mounted beneath the countertop, making it easy to sweep debris off the counter. They are most commonly used with solidsurface, stone and quartz countertops.
Accessories Sink accessories add another level of function and convenience. Choose from a wide range of practical options, such as sink racks, baskets, cutting boards, caddies and colanders. Other accessory selections such as soap dispensers and sponge holders aid in cleaning and organization.
• Apron-front sinks, also known as farmhouse sinks, are notable for their attractive front panel or apron. This style can be mounted under or on top of the counter. • A tile-in sink is specially designed for installation in a tile countertop and can be grouted as if it were another tile for a clean look similar to that of an under-mount sink.
Bowl Configuration Single-bowl sinks: Ideal for washing large pots and platters. Offset bowl sinks: Provide separation for washing and rinsing, typically with one large and one small bowl. Double-equal sinks: Separate bowls offer versatile workspace, with the option for extra-deep bowls.

Upgrades that boost your home’s value

home is often a family’s single largest asset, so making investments with upgrades and home improvements is almost always a good idea. However, knowing when and where to make those improvements isn’t necessarily a simple decision. Budget and space most often dictate the direction, but keeping function and your lifestyle needs in mind can help create a space that makes for an all-around smart investment.

When making plans for finishing a basement, keep function first. Adding features like bathrooms can be costly, but having ready access to those facilities may pay off if you plan to spend lots of time downstairs. Also keep climate in mind; in parts of the country basements tend to be damp, so use materials that can withstand the conditions.
Create outdoor living space for all year long. If a basement renovation isn’t practical, you may be able to create additional living space in an area you already have – outdoors. Even small patio spaces can become cozy gathering spots with the right furnishings and decor. For a larger yard, create destinations that make it comfy to congregate, such as a fire pit or grouping of chairs with overstuffed cushions.
Add technology in unexpected places. With the surge in smart devices, it’s becoming increasingly common to add technology throughout the house, and the bathroom is no exception. From heated floors to mirrors with embedded TV screens, the options are plentiful. A bathroom outfitted with the latest technology can bring function and a whole new level of style and elegance to your home.
This is another area where climate will play an important role in your plans; adding an enclosure to a patio can make it usable during all but the coldest months, while a pergola can lend necessary relief to an area that bakes in the sun.
Go green for the earth and savings. Appliances and climate control systems are often the first features homeowners consider when it comes to environmentally friendly upgrades, but windows and window treatments are another way to make a big impact. In a similar vein, skylights are a surprisingly affordable upgrade for the functionality and aesthetic benefits they provide, especially in the bathroom and kitchen where ventilation is as important as ample lighting. You can give your lighting and home value a boost with an Energy Star-qualified option such as Velux solarpowered fresh-air skylights, which open for air flow, reducing dependence on electrical lights and fans, with the touch of a programmable remote control.

value. For many homes, the basement is the most practical place to gain that space. Instead of using it as a collection ground for dust bunnies and storage, converting it into usable space can bring meaningful value, not only in dollars and cents, but in overall enjoyment of your home.
While you’re considering the upgrade options outdoors, don’t forget to think about your home’s exterior appearance. Reworking landscaping to highlight architectural features and freshening up paint can make a big impact. Adding decorative elements like shutters or new lighting or doors can also update a tired exterior.
