NEW YEAR, NEW ADVENTURES

Welcome back, students! Both WSU and UI have plenty of events to help ease you into college life By ANTHONY KUIPERS

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Washington State University and University of Idaho freshmen and new students are encouraged to take part in a number of university events intended to welcome them to campus this month. WSU’s Week of Welcome is in full swing in Pullman. New students can show off their new Cougar pride with a class photo on the Martin Stadium field at 7 p.m. today. There will also be an accompanying pep rally. WSU’s official welcome for all freshman and transfer students will be Friday with the University Convocation. The event starts at 10 a.m. at Beasley Coliseum. Each year, students can enjoy food, music and a community fair at the All Campus Picnic. This year’s picnic takes place 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Friday, on Cougar Way, formerly called Colorado Street. Cougar Way will be

closed between Stadium Way and D Street from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Student and community organizations will set up tables with information for students, faculty and staff as part of the community fair, and barbecue food will be available for the hungry. The University of Idaho’s official move-in day begins 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, with convocation later that day starting at 4 p.m at the Kibbie Dome. The UI Recreation

Center will host “Late Night at the Rec” from 9-11 p.m., Aug. 22. Students can explore the rec center and take part in activities like climbing, Zumba, dodgeball, volleyball and basketball. Serving Your New Community, the first volunteer event of the year, is a chance for

incoming students to participate in community services. Check-in times are at 8 a.m. and noon Aug. 24 on the Theophilus Tower Lawn. Later that evening, the UI will host its annual Palousafest at 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Sixth Street. Each year, thousands of students and community

members attend the street fair, which features booths for student organizations, campus departments, local businesses and nonprofits. On Aug. 25, UI President Scott Green will lead students through campus to the Administration Lawn where faculty and staff will serve dinner. The first 1,000 new students receive a Vandal Game Day T-shirt. Later, at 6:30 p.m., the LGBTQA Office will serve ice cream. Vandal Entertainment, the Residence Hall Association and Fraternity and Sorority Life will host a Paint U paint party from 8-10 p.m., Aug. 26, at the Theophilus Tower lawn where students can get covered in neon glow paint.

Students can explore Moscow’s eateries through a food tour of the city starting at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. On Aug. 30, the

women’s soccer team takes on Oregon Tech at 5 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome, and the volleyball team will battle California Baptist University at 7

p.m. in Memorial Gym. Anthony Kuipers can be reached at (208) 8834640, or by email to akuipers@dnews.com.

Cougar football looks for more of the same in 2019 Mike Leach’s squad is hoping to improve on its school-record 11-win season in ‘18

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

At this time last year, Gardner Minshew was a little-known, mustache-sporting transfer quarterback who Cougar football fans had no idea would lead Washington State to the most single-season wins in program history. Now, Minshew is in the NFL playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Cougars are again looking for a gunslinger to carry them to greatness. There will be a new QB taking the reigns of Mike Leach’s flashy Air Raid offense, but it’s not all unknowns for a WSU squad coming off an Alamo Bowl victory over Iowa State. Whether the new quarterback is FCS phenom transfer Gage Gubrud or one of the longtime backups Trey Tinsley or Anthony Gordon, he’ll have an

7 | August 14, 2019| Moscow-Pullman Daily News & Lewiston Tribune experienced supporting cast at his disposal. When the Cougars open the season Aug. 31 against New Mexico State at Martin Stadium, they’ll do so with arguably the deepest receiving core they’ve fielded in the Leach era. WSU returns its top four wide receivers from a year ago, led by touchdown savvy Tay Martin (69 receptions, 8 TDs) and Easop Winston Jr. (8 TDs, 89-yard long). While Leach isn’t saying so, the front-runner to throw to the myriad weapons is likely Gubrud — a former FCS player of the year who helped Eastern Washington upset the Cougars in 2016. On the court, the WSU women’s basketball team will try to make a jump in coach Kamie Ethridge’s second season. The Cougs return wrecking ball Borislava Hristova (19.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg), who could vie for Pac-12 Player of the Year honors. On the men’s side, new coach Kyle Smith begins his hunt for WSU’s first winning season since 2011-12. While the basketball teams are finding their groove with new coaches, two other WSU squads are right in the middle of sustained success. The WSU soccer team — a top-10 team early last season — was the last undefeated team in the nation a year ago

Vandals primed for bounce-back campaign in the Big Sky Conference Football team knows what to expect in its second season back in its old conference By STEPHAN WIEBE

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Idaho’s first football season back in the Big Sky didn’t exactly go to plan. With a 4-7 record and losses to its three biggest conference rivals (Montana, Idaho State and Eastern Washington) behind them, the Vandals are primed for a bounce-back season in year two of the return to their old conference. Head coach Paul Petrino will again use a multiquarterback system — at least at first — with his son, Mason Petrino, and Lewiston product Colton Richardson returning from an injury-plagued 2018. Whoever starts under center will have two big targets in senior Jeff Cotton

Individuals who want to participate in an intramural league must purchase a semester intramural pass for $25, according to the WSU Intramural Sports website. The pass allows an individual to play on an unlimited number of teams for one semester as long as it is within league eligibility policy. Most tournaments and special events are free to all students. Certain leagues such as elite, golf and other special events have an additional cost. For more information on intramural sports schedules, how to register, and classes and trips, like

kayaking and whitewater rafting, visit urec.wsu.edu. UI intramurals will also be up and running shortly after the first day of classes. A cornhole tournament starts Aug. 28 and sand volleyball begins Aug. 31. Entry forms are due Aug. 28 for cornhole and Aug. 29 for sand volleyball. Play starts for Ultimate Frisbee, whiffle ball, flag football, soccer, cornhole, doubles tennis, Frisbee golf and spikeball Sept. 8-15, depending on the sport. Entries are due Sept. 3 to Sept. 12, depending on the sport. Indoor soccer, kickball, volleyball and floor hockey start in October. Entry forms are

available in the recreation and wellness office inside the Student Recreation Center or online two weeks before the entry deadline. Completed entry forms must be returned to the SRC by the entry due dates. Like WSU, UI also offers outdoor opportunities, like rafting, backpacking and

biking, through their Outdoor Program. For the intramural sports schedule, entry forms and outdoor trips, visit uidaho.edu/currentstudents/recwell. Garrett Cabeza can be reached at (208) 8834631, or by email to gcabeza@dnews.com.
