For the majority of college and university students, involvement in extracurricular activities plays an integral role in their collegiate experience. Students become involved in these additional opportunities not only for entertainment, social and enjoyment purposes, but, most importantly, to gain and improve upon a variety of skills. A wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities exist at the University of Idaho and Washington State University, meeting an assortment of student interests.
At either university, students are able to join a campus newspaper, intramural sports teams, student government, volunteerism groups and hundreds of other organizations. They are also able to create their own student group if they cannot find anything that piques their curiosity. Shawn O’Neal, the director of student involvement at the UI, said getting involved on campus and in the community can improve student performance inside the classroom as well as opportunities outside of it. O’Neal said joining a student See Outside, Page 6

organization can help collegiates build connections they can use beyond their time at the university. He said these type of activities generally build upon course material and offer real-world experience that one can’t necessarily be taught. “Education is what they’re here for, but they’re only in the classroom for so long,” O’Neal said. O’Neal said participating in extracurricular organizations can often show future employers that students can handle school, work and other activities simultaneously, which in turn reflects responsibility and time management. “If you can lead at (college), the odds are you’re going to lead outside of it,” O’Neal said. “Some people may not want to lead and that’s cool, too, but at least you get to

figure yourself out.” He said these groups can also allow students to gain a new perspective into themselves and their community. O’Neal believes that these types of programs have the capability to change a person’s life, if they allow it, and he credits much of his own success to the extracurricular activities he discovered during his undergraduate years at WSU. He encourages students — freshmen and seniors alike — to get involved as soon as possible and to “sample everything,” saying that it is never too late to start. “If all you’re doing is going to class then you’re doing something wrong,” O’Neal said. “I hear from a lot of people who say they regret not getting involved — don’t let the years go by without trying something.” Olivia Heersink can be reached at (208) 883-4633, or by email to editor@dnews.com.
Read up, rent smart What you should know before you sign that lease By Kendrick Griffin Daily News staff writer
With summer coming to a close, many students are moving into a new semester and new housing. For those of you who are new to the renting game, here are a few tips and tricks courtesy of Tracie Brelsford, managing partner at DABCO Property Management in Pullman, to help you navigate this document-filled time.
1. Know your rights Similarly to worker’s labor rights, renters have rights that leasing agencies have to uphold. The Washington Landlord-Tenant Law spells out those rights in brochures that are “actually easier to read than you might think,” Brelsford said. A basic example of renters’ rights is that landlords must repair requested
items in a specified period of time. If they don’t, call them out. You shouldn’t be waiting two weeks to use your shower.
2. Choose your roommate wisely Many leases are joint, meaning that both you and your roommates are equally responsible for fulfilling the lease terms. You both pay rent and damages, and if your roommate flakes on a payment or decides to live with his or her partner for the remainder of the lease, then you’re responsible for footing the bill. “Your landlord won’t chase down your roommate for you,” Brelsford said.
3. Read your lease Unlike that check box at the end of the “Terms and Agreements” from your Netflix account, a lease is not something you should just sign off on. “While your lease may look long

and too legalese to understand,” Brelsford said, “it spells out your obligations as well as your landlord’s obligations.” What’s in that lease determines what you can do in your home; what damages you can be charged for; how the leaser will communicate with you; how many people you can have in your home at one time; what you
are responsible for; and many more things that are important to understand. If you don’t feel good about what your lease is spelling out, it’s not the right place for you. If you have any questions, just ask — because after you sign, you’re legally bound by your lease. Breaking it can cost you a lot of unnecessary money and stress.

“(Purchasing frozen produce) gives you the ability to take out the portions you need and not worry about spoiling,” Lind said. Differences in the nutritional value of frozen produce over fresh produce is very minute, Lind said. Sometimes frozen produce is even more nutritious since it is often flash-frozen straight from the crop. If you do choose to purchase fresh produce, purchase what you can refrigerate, Lind said. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and carrots tend to preserve longer than table produce such as apples and bananas.

money purchasing food from bulk bins, Lind said. Grocery stores such as WinCo sell grains, dried fruits, coffee grounds and other foods in bulk bins for shoppers to portion out themselves. “I also like to do more batch cooking so that you can freeze portions and utilize them later,” Lind said. Simple, healthy meals such as vegetable soup can be cooked in batches to serve in portions, refrigerate and warm up later in the microwave, Lind said. Loaves of bread can also be frozen and wrapped to serve in portions later, saving leftover pieces from going to waste.
Plan ahead Lind said one mistake people make is shopping while hungry, and that will leave you with a more expensive and less nutri-
tious bill. Instead, eat before you go out, and plan what you will purchase beforehand with a shopping list. Look for specials on healthy items and plan your shopping trip around those deals, Lind said. If meat is a part of your diet, start talking to your butcher. Ask them for smaller amounts of prepackaged items, cheaper cuts and appropriate cuts to use in different recipes, Lind said. “It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re going grocery shopping,” Lind said. “It’s one area that if you do some preparation beforehand, you can save yourself some stress and financial hardship if you really put some time and effort into it.” Taylor Nadauld can be reached at (208) 883-4630, by email to tnadauld@dnews.com.

Creating a home sweet home Tips for personalizing dorm rooms on a dime
By Shanon Quinn Daily News staff writer
There may be few times of life more exciting than leaving home for the first time to begin a college career. The idea of a fresh town and a clean slate can be as appealing to new scholars as any aspect of beginning the next stage of their lives, but it isn’t only the new environment that’s a clean slate. As freshman students flock to Washington State University and the University of Idaho late each summer, the
vast majority of them begin their journey by hauling boxes and bags into the place that will be their home for at least the first two semesters on campus — a dorm room. As simple as it sounds, there is a lot to consider when turning a dorm into a home — starting with the sheer amount of “stuff” necessary to make it so. “The main thing is not to bring too much stuff,” said Katy Lenning, WSU’s program See Home, Page 10

coordinator for student housing. Lenning said she often sees students arrive with more bundles than they can fit into their room, sending much of it back home with parents. Lenning suggested leaving behind any large, bulky items that may take up more space than students anticipate and coordinating with roommates to determine what both may need. Pictures, posters, paintings and other things that hang are a different story. “If it’s wall decor, go nuts, she said. But what to hang?
Dorm wall decor shouldn’t be limited to the previously mentioned, as vinyl album covers from the 1970s, 80s or later are often available for dollars or even cents and boast colorful art for plain white walls, while discarded postcards, empty frames and LED light strings also add a point of interest. At WSU, 3M picture hanging products are discouraged, as they remove finish from the walls, but tacks, small nails and old-fashioned picture hanging kits are fine, while at the UI, 3M products are recommended, and tacks and nails are discouraged. Different halls have different rules, so it’s important to get the right information for
the right space. A common concern in dorm rooms, Lenning said, is often space — particularly if the room is shared, making storage containers an almost necessary evil. A little imagination and an idea of the desired outcome can render random boxes and drawstring bags unnecessary, as storage solutions from brilliantly colored baskets or jars to vintage suitcases for seasonal clothes can be found at virtually any secondhand store and used to accent personal space or slid under a dormitory bed with ease. Roughly 2,000 students typically attend Up All Night, Student Involvement Associate Director Berto Cerrillo said. On Aug. 19, students can hit the dance floor as part of Project ZZU, a dance from 9 p.m. to midnight at WSU’s Compton Union Building. The dance is primarily focused on freshmen and transfer students, but all students are welcome. CougFest, the first concert of the year and a free event, will be held Aug. 23 at the Glenn Terrell Mall. Rapper Amine will perform and a local artist will open the show. Cerrillo said two movies will be played each day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, except on three-day weekends such as Labor Day, during the fall semester at the CUB Auditorium. He said there will be more concerts and speaking events throughout the year. For more information on WSU events, visit seb.wsu.edu or follow WSU SEB (Student Entertainment Board) on Facebook. Across the border, Palousafest
kicks off the UI academic year Aug. 19. Katie Dahlinger, student involvement assistant director, said more than 200 campus student organizations and departments, businesses and nonprofits from the Palouse converge on the UI campus for the street fair portion of Palousafest. Dahlinger said the celebration will include attractions such as a giant inflatable obstacle course, a mechanical bull, free food and a concert. The street fair is 5:30-7 p.m. and the concert is 6-9 p.m. On Aug. 19, students participating in new student orientation can volunteer for Serving Your New Community in which students are assigned a community service project. Since the first day of class is Aug. 21, the day of the total solar eclipse, Dahlinger said the Department of Student Involvement is trying to organize an eclipse viewing event. rushing plays at or behind the line of scrimmage. The loss of five defensive backs might spell trouble for the secondary, but the addition of transfer Sean Harper could provide the squad with some much-needed help in stifling the aerial attack of opponents. The first half of the schedule is incredibly favorable for the Cougars, who play five straight home games at Martin Stadium during the months of August and September, including a nationally-televised matchup against Boise State on Sept. 9. But the back half of the slate includes a challenging road trip against Utah on Nov. 11 and the annual Apple Cup showdown with Washington on Nov. 25 in Seattle.
Cougars hope to find Pac-12 magic this season Daily News staff writer
With the third-ranked passing attack in Division I football, Washington State enters the fall with aspirations of claiming the program’s first Pac-12 championship since 2002. But to do that, the Cougars need to withstand a gauntlet of conference opponents, including postseason contender and in-state rival Washington. The infamous air raid offense might struggle with the absence of wideouts Gabe Marks and River Cracraft, but quarterback Luke Falk still has a pair of formidable receiving threats in Tavares Martin Jr. and Jamal Morrow. On the other side of the ball, coach Mike Leach looks to reinforce a defensive line that finished seventh in the nation in stopping

UI building upon recent triumphs By Joshua Grissom
After five consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the Cougar soccer team saw its streak come to a close with an 8-9-2 showing last fall. Morgan Weaver returns to the pitch as the primary goal-scorer for WSU, while Ella Dederick looks to build upon a successful sophomore campaign that included 58 saves in the net. The soccer team opens the Pullman-based Cougar Classic with a Sept. 1 meeting against Nebraska, while a Sept. 21 matchup with Stanford should provide a strong indicator of the program’s direction under third-year coach Todd Shulenberger. The WSU volleyball team also takes the hardwood following a strong 2016 season that featured a 22-12 record and an NCAA Tournament postseason victory against Marquette. The Cougars should be able to withstand a tough conference schedule under sixth-year head coach Jen Greeny and emerge as a playoff squad. Greeny earned 2016 Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors after leading her program to a 11-9 conference record and wins over Kentucky and Virginia last season. A pair of University of Idaho athletic programs saw an unprecedented level of success in 2016, as the football team earned its first bowl victory since 2009 and the soccer squad cruised to a Big Sky Conference regular season title. This year, the bar has been set even higher. With a drop in collegiate divisions five months away, coach Paul Petrino and the Idaho football team look to round out a 21-year stint in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a second consecutive postseason appearance. The Vandals, led by the arm of Matt Linehan, have the talent. The senior quarterback tallied 381 yards passing and four touchdowns in his team’s 61-47 victory over Colorado State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
last year. Idaho faces a pair of daunting non-conference road games this fall, as the program takes on MAC heavyweight Western Michigan on Sept. 16 and SEC contender Missouri on Oct. 21. The Vandals also enjoy a strong home showing, with a six-game slate scheduled at the Kibbie Dome. Meanwhile, the Idaho soccer team returns to the pitch following back-to-back seasons as the Big Sky Conference regular season champions. Fourth-year coach Derek Pittman looks to secure the one thing his program has yet to find during his time at the helm — a berth in the NCAA Tournament. After finishing the 2016 season with a 10-5-4 record, Idaho fell in the Big Sky postseason tournament with a 1-0 loss to Eastern Washington. This August marks a move for the Vandals from Guy
Wicks Field to the Kibbie Dome, establishing the team as the only Division I soccer program to play exclusively indoors. Although Idaho lost a dominant offensive force in Kavita Battan, the team still has a pair of dangerous scoring threats in Olivia Baggerly and Kayla Watanabe. The program hopes to showcase its talent in its home rivalry meeting with Boise State on Aug. 25. The Vandal volleyball team also looks to rebound following last year’s 11-18 showing. Middle blocker Torrin Crawford and setter Haylee Mathis return to the hardwood to anchor a program in search of a playoff berth. Idaho hits the road for four non-conference tournaments, including competitions at Oregon State and Grand Canyon, before facing Montana State on Sept. 22 in the squad’s Big Sky opener.
