Connect with students through sports, outdoor activities UI, WSU students can reduce school stresses with intramural sports, outdoor program activities By Garrett Cabeza Daily News staff writer
School is almost back in session, which means tests, homework and late-night studying. To take a break from academic stresses, University of Idaho and Washington State University students can indulge in intramural sports and outdoor programs at their respective schools. At the UI, students can form teams or be free agents and sign up for intramural sports like sand volleyball and flag football. Entry forms are available at the campus recreation office located in the Student Recreation Center or online up to two weeks before the entry deadline. Students need to bring completed entry forms to the campus recreation office by 6 p.m. on the day of the entry deadline. Entry deadlines and the sports’ start dates vary according to the sport. Butch Fealy, associate director of campus recreation and competitive and recreational sports at the UI, said soccer has been growing steadily in popularity among students and flag football has drawn many student teams in past years. Soccer entries are due Aug. 29 and play starts Sept. 5, while flag football entries are due Sept. 5 and play starts Sept. 10. Fealy said volleyball, kickball and dodgeball are also popular among students.
Fealy said the university is considering introducing spikeball to the list of intramural sports this year. He said intramural sports are a great way to get away from studying and get connected to the campus community while burning off some energy. Fealy said it is a safe and enjoyable atmosphere, but students still have the opportunity to be competitive. Fealy said the UI outdoor program typically has a good core of biking, mountain and water activities. In past years, the program has featured whitewater kayaking adventures, surfing on the Oregon coast and ski trips. WSU intramural sports will also begin soon. Sign-up is underway for fall league and tournament sports. Most activities require an entry fee of $22 per player, but others are free. Students can pay also pay $22 for unlimited play for the semester. The pass allows students to play on an unlimited number of teams for one semester as long as it is within league eligibility policy. The pass also allows students to play in all tournaments for one semester. Three-on-three outdoor basketball, five-on-five soccer, tennis singles, tennis doubles and softball play begins Sept. 9. Garrett Cabeza can be reached at (208) 883-4631, or by email to gcabeza@dnews.com.

Take out a pen and grab your calendars. The Apple Cup is coming to Pullman this year. Washington State University and sixthranked Washington will face off in the 111th edition of the iconic rivalry game Nov. 23 at Martin Stadium. The Huskies own a fivegame win streak in the series. In the meantime, the Cougar football team is tasked with finding a starting quarterback before the season kicks off Sept. 1 at Wyoming. Pac-12 play will begin Sept. 21 against USC at the Coliseum. WSU coach Mike Leach likes his top four candidates, but they come without much experience. The top candidates are juniors Trey Tinsley and Anthony Gordon, East Carolina graduate transfer Gardner Minshew and true See Cougars, Page 6

freshman Cammon Cooper. None of them has thrown a pass in a game in a Cougars uniform. Whoever ends up under center will throw to a deep crew of wide receivers. Senior Kyle Sweet returns with his 58 receptions for 533 yards from a year ago, 2016 starter Robert Lewis is back after missing last season with a knee injury, and sophomore Tay Martin is set for a breakout year. Regardless, it might be tough for the Cougars to repeat their 9-4 record from a year ago, but if the new quarterback can settle into the system, a bowl game isn’t out of the question. On the court, the Cougar women’s and men’s basketball squads begin play Nov. 2 and Nov. 5 respectively.

UI all in on the Big Sky
Football team returns to former conference By Stephan Wiebe Daily News staff writer
It’s been more than 20 years since the Idaho Vandals played football in the Big Sky Conference, but at long last, they’re back. For better or for worse, the Vandals play their first Big Sky football slate this season for the first time since 1995, and just because they’re moving down from the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision to the Football Championship Subdivision doesn’t mean it will be an easy ride. They open the season Sept. 1 at Fresno State — one of the perennial powers in the Mountain
West Conference and owners of a 10-4 record a year ago. The Vandals will try to fare better than they did last time they played the Bulldogs, when current Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Car carved up the Idaho defense for 419 yards in 2013. Idaho opens conference play Sept. 21 at UC Davis and plays host to 2017 co-conference champ Southern Utah on Oct. 20 for homecoming. The Vandals play host to rival Montana on Nov. 10 before rounding out the season Nov. 17 with a contest at SEC powerhouse Florida. Idaho is coming off a 4-8 record last season a year after it won the Idaho Potato Bowl in See UI, Page 8

from Page 7 2016. There are still question marks around who will start at quarterback. Coach Paul Petrino’s son, Mason Petrino, and 6-foot-4 Lewiston native Colton Richardson are in the mix. But the Vandals do have a pair of STATS FCS Preseason AllAmerica honorees on the roster. Linebacker Kaden Elliss and offensive lineman Noah Johnson were among 15 Big Sky athletes picked to the squad. While Idaho football is just returning to the Big Sky, the Vandals’ other teams have already been competing in the conference since 2014. Both Idaho basketball

squads are coming off winning seasons. The women’s squad — led by “splash sisters” Mikayla Ferenz and Taylor Pierce — open Nov. 5 against Lewis-Clark State at Memorial Gym in Moscow. The Trevon Allen-led men’s basketball team tips off its season Nov. 9. Idaho soccer has a new coach at the helm after the departure of Derek Pittman. Former Northern Idaho coach Jeremy Clevenger takes over a Vandal team two years removed from back-to-back Big Sky regular-season titles. Idaho’s best team this year might be the defending Big Sky champion women’s golf team, which is led by back-to-back individual conference champion Sophie Hausmann.

Besides booths, Watson said food, local musicians, and attractions, such as a mechanical bull and an obstacle course, will be on hand for students and the public to enjoy. She said “Avengers: Infinity War” will play at 8:45 p.m. on the Tower
lawn as part of the Screen on the Green series. Watson said about 4,000 students and community members attend Palousafest each year. Two nights later, students can unwind from the first day of school with some country music as Rodney Atkins and Lucas Hoge perform Aug. 20 at the SprinTurf field on the east side of the Kibbie Dome. UI Student Involvement Assistant Director Katie Dahlinger said doors open for students at 6 p.m., for the public at 6:30 and the concert starts at 7:30. She said it is free for students as long as they have their Vandal card present; the cost is $15 for the public. Dahlinger said an electronic dance music artist will perform in November at the Bruce M. Pitman Center. For more information on UI events, visit uidaho.edu/welcome or uidaho.edu/vandalentertainment. Creating a home sweet home Tips for personalizing dorm rooms on a dime Staff report
There may be few times in life more exciting than leaving home for the first time to begin a college career. The idea of a fresh town and a clean slate can be as appealing to new scholars as any aspect of beginning the next stage of their lives, but it isn’t only the new environment that’s a clean slate. As freshman students flock to Washington State University and the University of Idaho late each summer, the vast majority of them begin their journey by hauling boxes and bags into the place that will be their home for at least the first two semesters on campus — a dorm room. As simple as it sounds, there is a lot to consider when turning a dorm into a home — starting with the sheer amount of “stuff” necessary to make it so. “The main thing is not to bring too much stuff,” said Katy Lenning, WSU’s program coordinator for student housing. Lenning said she often sees students arrive with more bundles than they can fit into their room, sending much of it back home with parents. Lenning suggested leaving behind any large, bulky items that may take up more space than

Pictures, posters, paintings and other things that hang are a different story. “If it’s wall decor, go nuts,” she said. But what to hang? Dorm wall decor shouldn’t be limited to the previously mentioned, as vinyl album covers from the 1970s, See Home, Page 12

80s or later are often available for dollars or even cents and boast colorful art for plain white walls, while discarded postcards, empty frames and LED light strings also add a point of interest. At WSU, 3M picture hanging products are discouraged, as they remove finish from the walls, but tacks, small nails and old-fashioned picture hanging kits are fine, while at the UI, 3M products are recommended, and tacks and nails are discouraged. Different halls have different rules, so it’s important to get the right information for the right space. A common concern in dorm rooms, Lenning said, is space — particularly if the room is shared, making storage containers an almost necessary evil. A little imagination and an idea of the desired outcome can render random boxes and drawstring bags unnecessary, as storage solutions from brilliantly colored baskets or jars to vintage suitcases for seasonal clothes can be found at virtually any second-hand store and used to accent personal space or slid under a dormitory bed with ease.

Buy and cook in bulk Buyers can often save money purchas-
ing food from bulk bins, Lind said. Grocery stores such as WinCo sell grains, dried fruits, coffee grounds and other foods in bulk bins for shoppers to portion out themselves. “I also like to do more batch cooking so that you can freeze portions and utilize them later,” Lind said. Simple, healthy meals such as vegetable soup can be cooked in batches to serve in portions, refrigerated and warmed up later in the microwave, Lind said. Loaves of bread can also be frozen and wrapped to serve in portions later, saving leftover pieces from going to waste.
Plan ahead Lind said one mistake people make is shopping while hungry, and that will
leave you with a more expensive and less nutritious bill. Instead, eat before you go out and plan what you will purchase beforehand with a shopping list. Look for specials on healthy items and plan your shopping trip around those deals, Lind said. If meat is a part of your diet, start talking to your butcher. Ask them for smaller amounts of prepackaged items, cheaper cuts and appropriate cuts to use in different recipes, Lind said. “It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re going grocery shopping,” Lind said. “It’s one area that, if you do some preparation beforehand, you can save yourself some stress and financial hardship if you really put some time and effort into it.”

Life outside the classroom School official attributes student success to involvement, encourages joining campus, community groups early on
Staff Report
For the majority of college and university students, involvement in extracurricular activities plays an integral role in their collegiate experience. Students become involved in these additional opportunities not only for entertainment, social and enjoyment purposes, but, most importantly, to gain and improve upon a variety of skills. A wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities exist at the University of Idaho and Washington State University, meeting an
assortment of student interests. At either university, students are able to join a campus newspaper, intramural sports teams, student government, volunteerism groups and hundreds of other organizations. They are also able to create their own student group if they cannot find anything that piques their curiosity. Shawn O’Neal, the director of student involvement at the UI, said getting involved on campus and in the community can improve student performance inside the
classroom as well as opportunities outside of it. O’Neal said joining a student organization can help collegiates build connections they can use beyond their time at the university. He said these type of activities generally build upon course material and offer realworld experience that one can’t necessarily be taught. “Education is what they’re here for, but they’re only in the classroom for so long,” O’Neal said. O’Neal said participating in extracurricular organizations

can often show future employers that students can handle school, work and other activities simultaneously, which in turn reflects responsibility and time management. “If you can lead at (college), the odds are you’re going to lead outside of it,” O’Neal said. “Some people may not want to lead and that’s cool, too, but at least you get to figure yourself out.”
He said these groups can also allow students to gain a new perspective into themselves and their community. O’Neal believes that these types of programs have the capability to change a person’s life, if they allow it, and he credits much of his own success to the extracurricular activities he discovered during his undergraduate years at WSU.
He encourages students — freshmen and seniors alike — to get involved as soon as possible and to “sample everything.” “If all you’re doing is going to class then you’re doing something wrong,” O’Neal said. “I hear from a lot of people who say they regret not getting involved — don’t let the years go by without trying something.”
