REMOVE MILDEW FROM YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR Courtesy of Metro Editorial

Homeowners want their residences to look inviting inside and out. Part of keeping an attractive property involves addressing issues that can compromise not only the appearance of a home, but even its integrity. People who live in regions with high humidity may find their homes are vulnerable to exterior mildew growth. Mildew is a kind of mold. Molds include all species of microscopic fungi that grow in the form of hyphae, which are multicellular filaments, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Mold thrives on any organic matter and surfaces with moisture management problems. Mildew, in particular, lives on shower walls, windowsills and other places where moisture levels are high. Mildew also can grow on home siding as well as fences and other exterior structures. While typically gray or white, mildew can be various colors. Experts recommend various cleansers to help combat the issue of mildew on a home. One of the first products that homeowners tend to reach for is sodium hypochlorite, which is a standard bleach used in laundry and pool sanitation. While sodium hypochlorite seems to

make mildew vanish, those at This Old House say that chlorine evaporates too quickly to get to mildew's roots on porous surfaces, such as wood or vinyl siding. Bleach also can stain clothing and damage foliage around the house. Hydrogen peroxide, or oxygen bleach, is less volatile, will not affect foliage and can clean mildew, algae and dirt on and below the surface. Trisodium phosphate is another effective cleanser. Commonly known as TSP, it often succeeds where other solutions fail in regard to stubborn stains and mildew. TSP also works well on various exterior surfaces. TSP needs to be used with extreme caution. When using TSP, wear long sleeves, gloves, goggles, and a respiratory mask, says Today's Homeowner. The product also requires adequate ventilation. There also are some environmental concerns, as TSP can damage foliage. In addition, if the product ends up in lakes and streams, it can trigger an overgrowth of algae that results in the depletion of oxygen levels in the water. Eco-conscious homeowners may want to try oxy cleansers before TSP. Mildew shies away from bright sunlight, so it tends to grow on the north side of homes. Removing trees or other foliage that can further block sunlight

to areas of the house can help eradicate mildew growth and stop it before it starts. Another tactic is to clean out gutters regularly and thoroughly to reduce moisture and to prevent decomposing debris from running over the edge of the gutters. This runoff can drip

down the home's siding and spread the mildew to other areas. Mildew can be problematic any time of year. Clean up mildew when the weather cools down to spruce up the look of a home. July 19, 2020 | 3

KEEP A HAPPY MARRIAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF HEARING LOSS Hearing is the sense most vital for companionship. Caring for your hearing will help you be your best. By Anne Simon, Au.D. Simon Audiology & Tinnitus “I learned all I needed to know about keeping a happy marriage from Mom and Dad,” said Sandy. “There was a deep fondness they had for one another. When it was time to make a tough decision, they made it. When it was time to discipline one of us kids, they did it. But through it all, there was a playfulness between them.” Sandy continues, “I had a deepin-my-bones knowing when I met my husband-to-be. I knew what to look for. I knew that I could always depend on him, just like Mom and Dad.” “That’s why it was so hard when Mom started to lose her hearing. It was so sad watching a loving couple drift away from each other because of hearing loss. It can be hard not only for the couple, but also for their family.” When Sandy’s mom started wearing hearing aids, she noticed changes. She realized her mom had been opting out of conversation because of the effort needed. Sandy’s dad realized how hard he had been working to communicate with his wife. Sandy’s folks have more energy now. And they are back to doing more activities together. 4 | July 19, 2020

HEARING AIDS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR There are three essential elements that make for a ‘happy marriage’ with a set of hearing aids. When hearing aids are just not working for you, it’s because there is a problem in one or more of these three areas. First, no two people have the exact same hearing loss. Each brain is unique in how it processes auditory input. Hearing loss really includes two distinct but related aptitudes. The aptitude that gets the most attention is the lowest volume you can hear sound. But far more important for companionship is understanding speech. People also experience different listening environments. There are people who are around a lot of ambient sound. And some

who lead much quieter lives. Second, you need hearing aids that fit your unique hearing profile. Hearing aids that work very well for a specific hearing loss profile can be a poor fit for another. Hearing aid manufacturers have different sound processing philosophies. To get the most benefit out of hearing aids, they should fit your hearing loss. Third, the programming of the hearing aids should be ontarget. This is a vital, and often overlooked, aspect of hearing healthcare. The amplification of the hearing aids should be exactly what you need at each frequency. No more. No less. This is what we call on-target. We test the aids while you are wearing them to ensure the programming is on-target. This is the best method. Hearing aids should be comfortable for you to listen through and comfortable to wear. Most important, hearing aids should allow you to understand speech.

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

Ongoing support is also important. Better hearing is not a one-day event. Hearing aids need routine maintenance. With properly programmed hearing aids, your brain will acclimate to the stimulus. While your brain acclimates, the need for slight programming adjustments is natural and common. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN AUDIOLOGIST • Audiologic evaluation. You want an audiologist with a high level of expertise and clinical competence. Someone who knows what test to perform and what those results mean for you. • Hearing aid fitting. You want an audiologist who works with a variety of manufacturers and keeps up-to-date with the latest technologies. You want candor in your relationship. You want to work with an audiologist who asks the right questions and understands how to make adjustments based on your experience. • Your hearing aids. You want an audiologist who will ensure the aids work for you over time. One committed to you enjoying the hearing aid experience.

What will people noce when you start wearing hearing aids? • You are more enjoyable • Conversaon with you is more natural • You’re lighter on your feet

They will noce that you are . . . You again Anne Simon, AuD

CHOOSE A STONE SURFACE Finding the perfect countertop Courtesy of Granite Concepts When choosing your countertop, first ask yourself if you want a traditional or contemporary look. Traditional tends to have more earth tones, where Contemporary shows more greys and whites. Next decide whether you like a consistent pattern, or like the movement or vein look throughout the slab. Something else to consider, is the lighting in your space. If you have a smaller space with little natural light, you will want to stick with a lighter color countertop. If your space is open and has lots of natural light, a darker countertop color would work. After finding the perfect countertop, it is time to decide on the various fabrication options. First you want to select your edge profile. We have over 9 standard edge profiles to choose from along with many upgrade options. Next, choose the installation type for your sink. Undermount or Self Rim? With undermount sinks, we use a mechanical bracket that supports the weight of the sink and secures it underneath your countertop. We use a 30-year silicon to seal the sink to the countertop. Self-rim, or Top Mount sinks are supported by the countertop and rest on top. The last thing to think about is 8 | July 19, 2020

what type of backsplash. There a few options, if the backsplash needs to go all the way up to your upper cabinets, you can either choose tile or use the same countertop material as backsplash. If you don’t need to go all the way to the uppers, another option is to run a 4-6 strip of countertop material along the walls. Decisions are made. Time to template the project. We use a laser template system to collect 2D and 3D data. After collecting the information, our template technician will go over some final details such as seam placement and outside/inside

radii. Once our programmer receives the data from the template technician, we can get you involved in layout with our state of the art layout software, where we have high resolution pictures of all of our slabs and can drop the templates on the slabs to show the various options in layout. After all the data is processed, it is time to get cutting. At Granite Concepts, we use a Saw-Waterjet CNC that can perform any straight cut with a Diamond blade, while finishing up arcs, inside/ outside radii, sink cutouts, and cooktop cutouts with a very

precise waterjet, giving us the upmost precision. Once the CNC is done cutting out the tops, our fabrication team with a combined 20 years of experience will make sure the hand polish is perfect on your countertops. Finally, Time for installation. After the install is complete, they will go over the routine care and maintenance to help your countertops look as good as new for years to come.

BUY DIAMONDS: ONLINE VS. BRICK AND MORTAR STORES Courtesy of Sam Dial Jewelers

Most people these days don't start shopping at a "Brick and Mortar" store for an engagement ring or a diamond; it's just too easy and convenient to research on your phone. But, according to The Knot, 87% of shoppers still prefer buying in store. Online research can be daunting. Most websites are trying to promote a certain platform or website from which to buy and they are biased. GIA.edu is a good place to learn credible facts about the characteristics of diamonds. You can learn about cut and how it affects overall brightness and light output. You can learn about internal clarity characteristics. You can learn what "color" means and how it affects overall brilliance. These attributes are fairly quickly understood superficially if you can look at examples in person, but you can get a head-start understanding the concepts on GIA.edu. On my many trips to Antwerp to buy directly from the cutters, and to get the first pick of all the new stones available, I sorted through hundreds of the exact same size diamonds with exactly the same characteristics on paper. I would narrow my choices down to say 12 from 100, and then look again and again to pick the top 2 or 3. Because of the arrangement and location and size of the natural 12 | July 19, 2020

inclusions, even though they are the same grade, stones can have brilliancy scores that are vastly different. Furthermore, within the same color grade, there can be a further refinement of the color so that one diamond can face up much whiter than the other. The result - hand selecting really does mean something. Years of training to pick diamonds that maximize brilliance by selecting top color range and optimal clarity arrangement, all while looking

out for issues with faceting, fluorescence, proportions, and symmetry (to name a few), are essential. Most websites do not even look at the diamond for you; they list stones on a database from sellers all over the world. They, themselves, look at a list and computer images to "help" you select a stone from stock that is LEFT OVER from discerning buyers like me. So, buying one actual diamond from a sea of those choices online, without

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

even comparing them, is not recommended. Whether or not you buy a stone through me is another issue, but not the purpose of this article; at least buy it from somewhere that is independently and locally owned. You will pay for what you actually get. You will have a professional help you navigate through all the information and choices. You will have someone to see face-to-face if you have questions later, and you will save time and effort.

LOWER THE COST OF AUTO INSURANCE Courtesy of Metro Editorial

Auto insurance is a must-have for drivers. While it might seem hard to believe, as of 2019 there are still some places in the United States where auto insurance is not mandatory. Auto insurance is mandatory in Canada, though each province has its own requirements in terms of the minimum amount of coverage allowable by law. Many people, even those in places where auto insurance is not mandatory, recognize the importance of being insured before they get behind the wheel. However, that doesn't mean those same drivers would not like to cut the cost of their auto insurance policies. A 2019 analysis from the online financial resource NerdWallet found that the average cost of car insurance in the United States is $1,621 per year. Average insurance costs vary significantly in Canada, where data from the General Insurance Statistical Agency found that, in 2019, the average annual insurance premium in British Columbia exceeded $1,800, while drivers in Quebec paid slightly more than $700 annually. No matter where drivers live, chances are they would love to lower their auto insurance costs. While there's no one-size-fits-all solution to cut auto insurance premiums, drivers can try various strategies to save money on their policies. 14 | July 19, 2020

· Raise your policy's deductibles. Higher deductibles may sound scary to drivers, but raising the deductibles is a great way to lower the cost of auto insurance. The auto insurance provider Progressive notes that deductibles typically range from $100 to $2,000. A driver whose policy has a $100 deductible will pay considerably more on his policy per month than a driver with a higher deductible. In fact, the Insurance Information Institute notes that drivers who increase their deductibles from $200 to $1,000 can save 40 percent or more on their coverage

costs. Drivers who choose this option should always be sure they have enough money in the bank to cover the cost of their deductibles. · Bundle your policies. Some drivers save money on their auto insurance policies by buying two or more types of insurance from the same provider. For example, homeowners may save money by buying homeowners insurance from their auto insurance providers or vice versa. · Research potential discounts. The III notes that many companies offer discounts to policyholders, even if those

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

discounts are not necessarily promoted. Drivers can contact their insurance companies, or shop around with other providers, to ask about various discounts that can save them money on their policies. Antitheft devices, defensive driving courses, low annual mileage, and a strong credit record are just a handful of the many potential discounts drivers may be eligible for. Drivers can reduce the cost of their auto insurance policies in various ways, potentially saving themselves hundreds of dollars each year as a result.
