High notes: 1968-1975 The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival was once just a gathering of high school bands for competitions and concerts. But in 1968, college buddies Dave Seiler and Bob Spevacek reunited at the University of Idaho and decided to invite regional high school musicians to learn from jazz and studio trumpet player Bud Brisbois.
2001 Lou Rawls and Nancy Wilson headlined the festival. The Lionel Hampton Center was also unveiled this year.
2002
Ella Fitzgerald headlined, along with the George Shearing Duo with Brian Torff. Buddy Childers played trumpet.
Saturday night marked the only appearance at the festival by Hampton that year. It was the final farewell for the 94year-old jazz vibist who later died Aug. 31. It was also the last appearance for bassist Ray Brown, who died in July.
Lionel Hampton made his first appearance, playing alongside Sarah Vaughan at Memorial Gym. Dianne Reeves and Bill Perkins also performed.
1987 The University of Idaho School of Music was dedicated to Hampton. Featured artists included Ray Brown, Clark Terry and Al Grey.
1989 Wynton Marsalis headlined the show, along with Carmen McRae, Kenny Burrell, Patricia Miller, Al Grey, Doc Cheatham, Stan Getz, Gene Harris, Ray Brown and Phyllis Hyman.
1992 Actor and jazz pianist Clint Eastwood appeared at the Kibbie Dome to receive the Lionel Hampton Jazz Hall of Fame Award.
2000 Trombone legend Al Grey made his last appearance at the festival to jam alongside long-

2005 Lou Rawls cancelled his performance at the festival, disappointing festival-goers. The jazz singer died less than a year later from lung cancer.
2006 Lynn “Doc” Skinner retired after 31 years as executive director of the festival, but pledged to help his successor, artistic director John Clayton. Read more on Clayton and his work with the festival at Inland360.com.

Feeling the vibe Youngest Marsalis brother plays festival By Lindsey Treffry Daily News staff writer
While drummer Jason Marsalis has never played at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, he has paid tribute to the man after which the festival is named. A vibraphone player, too, Marsalis accompanied the Lionel Hampton Orchestra in New Orleans and has been a part of Hampton tributes at other festivals and events around the nation. “I was actually playing drums first,” said Marsalis, 36, the son of Ellis Marsalis, Jr., and youngest brother of jazz greats Branford, Wynton and Delfeayo. “Hampton was a music I always listened to.
When I got serious about the vibes, I paid more attention to his music.” Marsalis is a special guest during the Lionel Hampton Jazz Youth Orchestra performance at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Much like the festival itself, Marsalis said jazz music is always going to evolve. “The biggest problem that I’ve had is when musicians throw out the older elements of the music, and they decide the element of swing is no longer relevant,” Marsalis said. “If you understand older elements, it’ll strengthen the new elements.” Marsalis said jazz musicians should understand the music was originally for dance. “Understand that that’s what Louis Armstrong’s music was about, and Duke Ellington’s band and Count Basie’s band was about,” Marsalis said. “Even if you
don’t know every song, it’s important to know how the basics of those songs work.” Marsalis released his own songs in 2013 as part of his “In a World of Mallets” album, which he said was well received. So well received, that he has decided to record another album with the same group this summer. “There’s a record I made with my father, that will be released in a month,” Marsalis added. The two have recorded together on seven albums. Marsalis said he will likely drop into a few festival workshops during his stay, and may find himself on stage more than once Saturday. “I’m looking forward to it and it’s a fun time,” he said.
