AUGUST 14, 2019

WELCOME RODEO FANS TO THE 85TH LEWISTON ROUNDUP!

Dear Rodeo Fans, On behalf of the volunteers, personnel, and Board of Directors, I would like to personally welcome you to this year’s Lewiston Roundup. We are in our 85th year of providing the LewisClark Valley with a community celebration that allows people to gather to celebrate the western way of life. We are proud to be recognized as a stop on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo circuit and a member of the Big 4 Rodeo Association since 1948. The Lewiston Roundup Association is a volunteer, 501(c)3 organization that returns over $60,000 back each year to our area non-profit groups. Our board of directors is comprised of individuals who are each volunteering their time, talent and treasure all year to support our community and celebrate the rich western history. If you have never been to a rodeo before, I would encourage you to give it a try and if you are a returning fan – welcome back! Once again this year we will feature a $5.00/ticket Family Night on Thursday. Anyone can purchase a ticket for only $5.00. Our goal is to make this family-friendly, community event open and available to all individuals. My personal thanks to the sponsors that support us and assist us with making a difference in our community. We couldn’t put on this event without you! We are especially pleased to welcome Idaho Central Credit Union as the sponsor of our Outdoor Arena. A special thanks also to the Board of Directors for the endless hours of support, decisionmaking, meetings, and enthusiasm you display in being a part of our great event. I look forward to seeing YOU September 4-7, 2019 for a celebration of our community at the 85th Annual Lewiston Roundup. She’s Wild!

85TH LEWISTON ROUNDUP

GRAND MARSHALL CLYDE LONGFELLOW Clyde was born and raised in Lewiston, Idaho. Born in 1942 to a career Air Force man (Clyde Sr) and Lewiston-bred mom (Sybil). From an early age, Bud decided he wanted to be a cowboy. As soon as he could, he started working out at the Old Lewiston Round Up Grounds, cleaning stalls and walking hots. Before long, he was an exercise boy for some of the racehorses kept there. He met Idaho rodeo legends such as Clint Roberts and Jack Carson, both became mentors to his rodeo dreams. He started getting on broncs and riding colts. While there he met Edie Gottschalk. They married in 1965, and moved out work on the ranch of Shirly Bothum (bronze artist). At one point, Shirly told Clyde that he had to decide – either he was going to work, or he was going to rodeo. He couldn’t do both. So Clyde quit his job and headed to Cheyenne! He won the Cheyenne Frontier Days amateur saddle bronc in 1965! No looking back now! Clyde & Edie spent most of the first years of their marriage on the Rodeo Trail. Daughter, Crystal, was born in 1967, and the family lived on the road in a travel trailer most of the year. In 1972, the family moved to Kendrick, ID, and in 1973, welcomed another daughter, Kelly. Clyde continued rodeoing and winning, earning several trips to the Columbia River Circuit Finals. As the kids grew, they started entering junior rodeos and high school rodeos. In about 1985, Clyde decided to stop entering and just concentrate on working. He had his own truck and was making a good living with Haul Ass Trucking. Almost too busy to rodeo! Well, by 1990, Clyde was entering rodeos again. He was still craving it. Not only was he entering, but he was winning against the younger set of bronc riders. He earned several more trips to the Columbia River Circuit Finals. In 1995, his first grandson was born. In 1998, Clyde won the saddle bronc riding at Colville, WA, and took Rylen on the victory lap! Clyde qualified for the Senior Pro Finals in 1998, winning 2nd in the World! He came home with plans to win the Senior World in 1999. Those plans came to an abrupt stop the next day. He was severely injured in a trucking accident and was forcibly retired from riding broncs and truck driving. After many months of recovery, Clyde was able to start golfing to work his back and keep it flexible. He eventually started riding saddle horses again, but no more buckers! Lewiston is still HOME to Clyde – there are two rodeos he never misses: the Lewiston Round Up and the Pendleton Round Up!

ANNOUNCER & BARREL MAN WILL RASMUSSEN

A smooth, easy-listening voice, solid knowledge of rodeo, and a style that is both entertaining and informative, are the mix of elements that make Will Rasmussen one of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s most popular Rodeo Announcers. His personal knowledge of the sport, sense of humor, and timing blend together for a quality presentation that enhances the rodeo and satisfies the fans. “I guess it’s my sense that you need more than just a rodeo,” he says. “People want to be entertained.” Will joins the Lewiston Roundup for his 17th year.

CLOWN CODY SOSEBEE Cody Sosebee grew up ranching in Arkansas. While Sosebee was always a boisterous prankster of sorts, he started out as a bareback rider. It was just by chance that the career of a rodeo entertainer fell into his lap at a three-night rodeo in 1997. Now what was once fun’n around has led into a lucrative career. His secondary occupation of driving a school bus and substitute teaching provides endless opportunities to gather material. Sosebee says that everything in life, he sees with humor. Cody has been nominated over 13 times for PRCA Clown of the Year and PRCA Comedy Act of the Year and being selected to be the Barrel Man at the 2017 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

STOCK CONTRACTOR

After 30 years in the rodeo business, Sankey Pro Rodeo is exploring new horizons yet again.

Springboarding off his years as a rodeo contestant at the highest level of the sport, Ike Sankey combined what he had learned about rodeo as a business with his livestock skills and work ethic to create his vision of a rodeo company. Focusing not only on quality livestock, but also event production and spectator experience, Sankey Rodeo Company flourished. Over the years the company has been blessed with 4 Saddle Bronc of the Year PRCA awards, 12 PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year nominations and numerous PRCA and Montana Circuit awards. Additionally, Sankey Rodeo Company livestock is featured annually at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and have been featured on ESPN, USA Today, Western Horseman and CMT. Over $225,000 is won on Sankey Rodeo Company livestock annually. In 2018 Sankey Pro Rodeo was awarded the prestigious “Remuda Award,” recognizing them as the predominant herd of bucking horses in the PRCA.

18

A family affair from the start, in 2013 Ike and Roberta welcomed son, Wade, and daughter, Ryan, in as full partners and, in 2018 Sankey Rodeo Company joined forces with renowned bull producers, Phenom Genetics. Phenom Genetics was founded by Matt Scharping in 2007, but his isn’t your typical bull business story. Matt grew up on a small farm in Arlington, Minn., and after a successful career in the tool business, he began raising and hauling bulls full time in 2013. He partnered with former Minnesota Viking Jared Allen on Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team, and bought out Allen in January 2018. These days, Phenom Genetics raises and trains young bulls for bull competitions, and hauls bulls to PBR and PRCA events as well. Their stable of bulls includes PBR headliners Air Time and Magic Train, as well as four-time PBR Finals bull CBR World Champion Bucking Bull Hy Test. Matt credits all of his success to hard work and the help of his family: wife Kelly, and children Lacey, Kameron, Kolten and Kiri, as well as his hired man, Cody Stinson, who is a huge part of the business. Combining the legacy of Sankey Rodeo Company’s outstanding bucking horses with Phenom Genetics’ world class bulls and a committed focus on fast paced, exciting, family entertainment, Sankey Pro Rodeo is poised to expand the concept of what rodeo can be.

BULLFIGHTERS

KALEB BARRETT

Kaleb, a licensed practical nurse in Missoula, knows what it’s like to have a couple thousand pounds of angry animal stomping on you. Barrett took up bull riding during his high school years in Whitehall. He attended the University of Montana to ride bulls and earn a degree and then focused on becoming a professional bullfighter and has been fighting bulls since 2007. He was selected nine times to fight the Montana Circuit Finals. He is thankful to have two professional careers that allow him to help people in need.

NATE JESTES Nate was always drawn to the family ranch and the small farming community where his closest friends were from. Nate pursued his childhood dream of Aviation. and graduated from Montana State University with an Associates Degree in Aviation Technology. During college, Nate was instilled with another life-long passion of Bullfighting. Nate was accepted into the PRCA and his career quickly accelerated. Throughout the last couple of years, Nate has had the opportunity to work and protect cowboys at some of the biggest rodeos in the industry. In 2016 and 2017 Nate was selected by the top 20 bull riders to protect them at the Wrangler National Finals.

JOSH RIVINIUS Josh, a rancher from Elgin, ND, found his true passion when he attended a rodeo school that offered bullfighting. He then developed the skills that would take him to the next level. He now provides one of the most important responsibilities in pro rodeo. Cowboy protection. Rivinius says every time cowboys and bullfighters leave the arena unharmed, it is a victory. He has worked the Pro Rodeo Tour Finale twice and is a mainstay at the College National Finals. He has been selected 11 times by the bull riders to work the Badlands Circuit Finals as well as 2 times to the Ram National Circuit Finals.
