Discovered in 1805 by Lewis and Clark, the Palouse is a geologic wonder unlike any other area. Mesmerizing beauty and a sweeping landscape of rolling hills and plateaus greet visitors to this distinctive region north of the Snake River in southeast Washington and north central Idaho. This is the place to simply leisurely drive along the gentle curving highways, sprinkled with antique shops, wineries, easy access venues for hiking and biking and above all, photography. If you ever needed to stop the world and simply relax, this is the place for it. Originally occupied by the nomadic Palus tribe, renowned as expert equestrians, it is generally thought that French-Canadian fur traders converted the name of the tribe to the more familiar French word pelouse, which means "land with short thick grass." The area has since become renowned for growing wheat and legumes and is home to small towns with a rich history and charm. Pullman, Washington

In 1875, the city’s first store was opened on what is now Main

Street. The town became incorporated in 1887 followed by the creation of Latah County in 1888 landing Moscow as the county seat. In 1889 Moscow was also chosen as the site for a landgrant institution, the University of Idaho, which propelled the city into a trading and population center for the county. Idaho achieved statehood in 1890. Portions of this text excerpted from "users.moscow.com/lchs/history. html#moscow" photo courtesy of Mark LaMoreaux

Cultivating The Palouse photo courtesy of USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council
The rolling hills of the Palouse offer a unique agricultural experience for local farmers. In the spring, the loess hills are bright green and speckled with an array of beautiful wildflowers. Before harvest in the fall, the hills are brushed with the golden colors of ripe crops, and some fields are filled with bright yellow canola. Area crops include wheat, barley, peas, lentils, chickpeas, garbanzo beans, and canola. Peas, lentils and chickpeas have been grown on the Palouse for over
100 years, generally as a rotation crop with wheat. Farmers appreciate the special nitrogen-fixing properties of these three crops, whose roots gather nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil surrounding the roots. This natural process helps reduce the farmer's dependence on commercial fertilizers, and this nitrogen benefit remains even after harvest, giving a boost to the wheat crop that is planted on that same field in the next season. and chickpeas are called the coolseason pulses: pulses is the term used to describe legumes that are used primarily for food, and cool-season refers to their tolerance for cool weather at the beginning of the growing season. Depending on the soil moisture and temperature, cool-season pulses may be planted anywhere from early April to early May, and the plants generally flower about eight to ten weeks after

planting. After flowering, seedpods appear, and the seeds inside the pods are allowed to mature and dry on the vine prior to harvesting. Pea harvest takes place first, usually starting in midJuly, followed by lentil harvest in August and chickpea harvest in September. After harvest, the cool-season pulses are stored in bins and then shipped to buyers throughout the marketing year. Some of our harvest stays here in the USA to be used in canned soups and other prepared foods, or sold dry in packaged form for home cooking — and a lot of our chickpeas are processed into hummus refrigerated snack spreads. However, most of our cool-season pulse harvest is exported to other markets. Our leading export markets include India, China, the EU, the Philippines, and Peru.

Moscow has great neighboring communities, and they offer a variety of great things to do, see, taste and experience. Francis Warren settled the area of the present town of Bovill, Idaho around 1890. He built a log home at what is now the center of Bovill, and the vicinity came to be known as Warren Meadows. While lumber is the primary industry, Bovill is nestled in a beautiful mountain meadow, with opportunities for great camping, hunting and fishing available in all directions. Moose Creek Reservoir is a local favorite, offering a peaceful location for camping, fishing and recreation for the entire family. Portions of this text excerpted from www.latahcountryhistoricalsociety.org. Deary Idaho was settled in the 1880s and 1890s predominately by Scandinavians from the Midwest. In 1905 Potlatch Lumber Company engineers decided to locate a station of the Washington, Idaho & Montana Railway Company on this site. The mountain north of town that rises

1,100 feet above its surroundings is known at Potato Hill (elev. 4,017). It is a volcanic vent of undetermined age. Early residents called it Spud Hill, but the enterprise always referred to it as Mount Deary. Two forested reservoirs are nearby and offer camping, hunting, fishing, and hiking.

In Latah County, you can visit scenic Genesee, Idaho and enjoy the historic buildings downtown, take a country drive to admire the beautiful rolling hills of wheat, barley, garbanzo beans, peas and lentils, or shop at the local antique store. Another great adventure is to visit the National Historic Site, White Springs Ranch. Take a trip back in time and see the circa 1876 log cabin and the 1884-1904 farm home. Genesee Community Day, the first Saturday of June, draws families to enjoy the car show, basketball tournament, quilt show, or warm up your running shoes for the Cow Creek

Visitors to Juliaetta Idaho love to stop by the historical Bank of Juliaetta, now known as "First Bank of Pizza," and admire the original ceiling and safe, while enjoying homemade pizza for the entire family. Visitors are always welcome to tour the privately owned Castle Museum, which was constructed by Abraham A. Adams in the early 1900s. Today, the museum’s rooms are filled with a collection of antiques and artifacts relating to local and Pacific Northwest history. Visitors can also venture up the hill to Colter’s Creek Winery.

Thomas Kirby founded Kendrick, Idaho in 1889. Kendrick’s rich history can still be enjoyed today. Visitors can admire many of the historic 1904 buildings on main street, tour the Bethany and Leland Churches, pull over to investigate the basalt columns that many university students travel to see, or shop at one of the many antique shops downtown. Kendrick also welcomes

►►The University of Idaho Founded in 1889, the University of Idaho has, for 125 years, been the state’s public land-grant, national research university. Nearly 12,000 students, pursuing one or several of more than 250 degree options, contribute to the vibrant life of the beautiful main campus in Moscow. Recognized by Forbes Magazine as among the top 25 "Best Value Colleges" in the nation, the statewide impact of Idaho’s flagship university includes centers in Boise, Coeur d’Alene, and Idaho Falls, as well as research and extension programs across the state. The Moscow campus features many iconic buildings and an original Olmsted Brothers landscape design. The landmark Administration Building anchors campus, fronted by a picturesque lawn with towering trees

and the school’s famed "Hello Walk" pathway. Memorial Gym, built in 1928 in honor of servicemen killed in World War I, is still home to Vandal volleyball and basketball, and the many historic buildings of Greek Row complete the classic college campus environment. On the vibrant and pleasant campus, visitors can play eighteen holes of golf among the rolling hills of the Palouse, take in the Tutxinmepu Powwow organized by the Native American Student Association, or support the Vandals with a trip to the Vandal Bookstore for sportswear and mementoes. When you arrive on Campus, go to the Intermodal Transit Center at 1006 Railroad Street to get your parking pass. Special events such as homecoming, Moms’ and Dads’ weekends, commencement, and Vandal athletics draw in crowds of parents and community members, as well as many of the nearly 100,000 Vandal alumni.
Something exciting is always happening at the university nestled on the Palouse, against the mountains. Find more popular options below. For up-tothe-minute listings, visit uidaho.edu.

Athletics
University of Idaho athletics are a source of pride and entertainment throughout the year. The "Vandals," named for a fierce Germanic tribe, compete in 16 men’s and women’s NCAA Division I sports, including football, basketball, women’s soccer, track and field, golf, tennis, volleyball, swimming, diving and cross country. The Vandal football team plays at the unique Kibbie Dome, an often rollicking place to enjoy a game. The women’s basketball team is the reigning Western Athletic Conference champion. A fierce but lovable Joe Vandal is often found patrolling the sidelines, leading the singing of the "Go Vandals" fight song. Schedules and more at govandals.com.

►►New Saint Andrews College adds to Moscow’s downtown vibe For the 200 students at New Saint Andrews College, downtown Moscow is their campus. The limited-enrollment, classical Christian liberal arts college’s classrooms, library and administrative offices are housed in the historic Skattaboe Block buildings on Main Street at Friendship Square, and the Nuart Theater downtown serves as its auditorium. With a desire to have its students learn to live as adults in the community, many hold part-time jobs and live in or near downtown. The local athletic club passes for the college’s "student recreation center" and local coffee shops serve as gathering spots. In all, it’s an economic boon for Moscow’s downtown, as students and faculty of the college work, shop and socialize downtown, adding to the vibrancy of Moscow’s eclectic community. Established in 1994, the College is noted for its commitment to Christian principles and counter cultural hallmarks, such as not accepting Federal aid, its revived Harvard curriculum of 1643, and limiting its

enrollment based on the size of its faculty. Frequently rated among the nation’s top classical and Christian colleges, New Saint Andrews seeks to graduate leaders who are eager to shape culture through wise and victorious Christian living. The college’s students come from 30 states, seven foreign countries and represent 20 different Christian denominations, yet they all share in the fellowship of the thoroughly Trinitarian, robustly Protestant, decidedly

evangelical Christian community in Moscow. Not constrained by specializing in a single area of study, the college’s timetested liberal arts approach provides a higher education for all of life. With B.A. degrees in Liberal Arts and Culture, its graduates go on to pursue careers in a variety of fields, such as business, writing, law, economics, teaching, technology and the ministry, and advanced study at places like Oxford, Duke, Notre Dame, Princeton and Vanderbilt. At $11,500 a year, its tuition is among the lowest in the country for private colleges and universities. Private scholarship assistance is available and freshman students have the opportunity to lock-in their tuition rate for all four years. The College is accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, the State of Idaho, and is a member of the Association of Reformed Colleges and
