The basics on long-term care insurance Provided by Metro Editorial

arious insurance plans protect individuals from financial calamity. Insurance works by requiring policy holders to pay a premium. In the event of an accident or incident, a claim can be filed and the insurance company will reimburse the person for expenses, minus the deductible. Health insurance is one type of insurance that people have to manage their health and well-being. There’s also another, perhaps lesser-known insurance that can prove invaluable. It is called long-term care insurance. Long-term care insurance, or LTCI, is an insurance product that is found primarily in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. LTCI generally covers assisted living needs, home care, hospice
care, adult daycare, and other requirements of senior living and/or health management. People who invest in LTCI are planning ahead for the times when they may no longer be able to care for themselves without assistance. LTCI will help offset the ever-rising costs associated with specialized senior housing and nursing facilities. Traditional healthcare insurance and governmentsponsored plans (i.e., Medicare in the United States) will not pay for daily, extended care services. The AARP notes that these other plans may only cover a short stay in a sub-acute rehabilitation center or nursing home, or pay for a limited amount of at-home care. LTCI can help families finance the cost of medical care when all other options will not. LTCI should be looked into early in life, as policies often
cost less if purchased when one is younger and in good health. People in poor health or already receiving longterm care services may not qualify for LTCI outright. But there are some workarounds, including buying a limited amount of coverage or coverage at a higher ‘nonstandard’ rate. Some policies do not require medical underwriting, and these may be advantageous to people with preexisting health conditions. When shopping for policies, look into how long LTCI will pay. Some policies include limits on how long or how much providers will pay for care, with some plans maxing out at two to five years. Other policies may not implement a term limit. Speak with a tax specialist as well, as premiums paid on a long-term care insurance products may be tax

Palouse Seniors - Senior Fair Edition truly are. They find something in life to keep going.” A former resident, Kathryn Cox, has been a resident more than once at Aspen Park. Encouraged to participate in therapy after her first knee surgery, Cox knew that she wanted to stay somewhere that could make her recovery less stressful and a quicker recovery. Although Cox had originally never considered Aspen Park, it was a friend that recommended the therapy department. Cox didn’t know anything about the center, but “I expected what I got and that was good care,” she said. Initially, rehab was the only thing on Cox’s mind. She didn’t want to join activities or leave her room too often, but she was later encouraged to join other residents and staff for a Mother’s Day Tea. This was where she met a long-term resident whom Cox now describes as family. Although Cox has since discharged back to her home with her husband, she still makes regular visits to the center. “It feels like family each time I visit, I feel like I belong,” she said, “Nothing but good memories about this place.” Cox remembers back to her first stay after knee surgery. Although the

transition was smooth, Cox began to deal with unexpected leg spasms that caused discomfort. She remembers one of the nurses sitting on the floor and rubbing her leg to help ease the pain. You just don’t get that kind of care anywhere else, she said. When it comes to therapy, Cox describes it as work. She said she was encouraged throughout her rehab stay and most importantly wasn’t pushed beyond her limits. “I had struggles each time, but it was a matter of keeping on,” she said.

When Cox initially toured the facility before surgery she was using a fourwheeled-walker to ambulate. After two knee surgeries and two rehab stays with Aspen Park, Cox is now back home and walks without the use of any assistive devices. Terry said she has put together cooking groups and a resident garden club, allowing residents to participate in things they normally would at home as part of their therapy. “They are enjoying themselves and they don’t even realize they are doing therapy too,” she said. The therapists also provide specific training as needed to resident’s homes such as managing stairs or even performing home evaluations prior to discharge to assist in a smooth transition home. What residents don’t realize is sometimes how much a center’s support system can make all the difference in their recovery. “Everyone knows everyone and they become an inside support,” said Terry, “They cheer each other on.” Residents are not just support for each other but for the rest of the staff as well. Aspen Park physical therapist, Michelle Winter, loves working with the geriatric population because of what she learns from them in return. More than rest, sleep restores Provided by Gritman Medical Center

honda Zwetzig thought being sleepy was just part of life. As the lifelong caretaker to her 37-year-old son who has cerebral palsy, Rhonda assumed her exhaustion was caused by stress. “I’ve had poor sleep my whole life; I thought it was stress induced, or maybe it was the issues I had with my neck or back,” Rhonda said. Rhonda and her son, Matthew, moved to the Palouse about three years ago to be closer to her daughter. It was this same daughter who urged Rhonda to visit the Gritman Medical Center Sleep Center for a sleep exam. “My daughter was concerned … I went down the check list (of other health issues), but I was still having problems sleeping,” Rhonda said. Dr. John Grauke, a board certified sleep specialist, said Rhonda’s experience is common. “Most people with sleep
disorders don’t even know they have one,” said Dr. Grauke. “They are tired all day, fall asleep in their chairs or snore heavily.” Dr. Grauke said excessive sleepiness is common enough that it should be screened for on a regular basis, just as diabetes or high blood pressure is screened for regularly. “If you rate high on the STOP BANG test, we recommend seeing your general clinician or Dr. Grauke,” said Mark Johnson, a polysomnographer at Gritman with 27 years of experience in the field. Patients have the option of doing an at-home sleep test or a test at the Gritman Sleep Center. Insurance coverage of these tests varies by insurance provider and Mark recommends checking with your insurance representative for additional information. “It impacts nearly every system in the body,” said Dr. Gruake. “Sleep is more than rest, it’s restorative.”

Dr. Grauke with one of his patients at Gritman’s Sleep Center Gritman’s Sleep Center started screening for sleep disorders in 1996 and became nationally

of sleep until quite recently in the world of medicine,” said Dr. Grauke. “We were transplanting

Gritman’s nationallyaccredited Sleep Center is designed with patients’ needs in mind. The spacious rooms are almost hotel like, with a queen bed, armchair and bathroom all prepared for each patient’s personal use. Matthew went first, and the following week, Rhonda returned for her own overnight polysomnogram test. “I really didn’t have to do much, Mark (Johnson), was very attentive in supplying everything I needed; he is just the nicest man,” Rhonda said.
During the test, Gritman’s certified staff monitors and documents a patient’s sleep patterns. Together with Dr. Grauke, they diagnose sleep disorders and develop a treatment plan to resolve the patient’s sleep issues. “I went from two hours to six hours of sleep and my lungs feel like I can take a big breath; I’m not grasping for air anymore,” Rhonda said. Her son is also sleeping better, and Rhonda said his skin looks healthier and now has a rosy glow. “Don’t be scared and don’t wait so long to come in, because it may not be anything, but if it is something, they can really help,” Rhonda said.
