Welcome from the President

In the Fall of 1977, my younger brother Sean drove my best friend and me in my mom’s Cordoba to Pullman. Gayle and I were starting our Freshman year at Washington State University. If someone would have told me then that I would start my career as a lawyer and make my home in Pullman, I would have said they were smoking something. Now over 33 years later, I have had the privilege of being a long-time Pullman resident and I find myself honored to represent this community as your Chamber President. Pullman is a unique place to live, work and raise a family. Although it is a small town, the cultural opportunities rival those of a major metropolis. Two world-class universities within eight miles of each other, offer us the opportunity to enjoy sporting events, musicals, dance troupes and the occasional celebrity. We are treated to the talents of local actors at our two community theaters, the Pullman Civic Theater and the Regional Theater of the Palouse. Within minutes of home, we can relax by the waters of the Snake River or hike the trails of Kamiak Butte. Unlike many communities, our nationally rated schools offer a well-rounded academic experience which values reading, writing and arithmetic, as well as the arts and music. This is not by accident; rather, it is due to the consistent and generous support of our community. Our city government, led by Mayor Glenn Johnson, is mindful of the needs of all types of businesses, whether an international corporation like Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory, a sole-proprietorship or a family-owned farm. Pullman is a wonderful place to build a career; take it from one who knows. When I lived in the big city during law school, I learned quickly to keep my eyes on the sidewalk and my head down. Oh so different in our little berg! People are friendly, helpful and caring. There is a feeling of neighborhood that can be felt whether I am serving eggs at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Feed or attending a Cougar basketball game in Beasely Coliseum. We are community! Meet the Board of Directors ADINA BIELENBERG and her family have been a part of the Palouse for over 100 years. She was born in Pullman, is a Genesee High graduate and earned degrees in psychology and consumer studies from the University of Idaho. She is the Executive Assistant to the President and manages the Public Aﬀairs Department for Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. “I am honored to have the opportunity to represent SEL on the Pullman Chamber of Commerce board and thrilled to be actively engaged with the Pullman community”. She currently serves on the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Association of Washington Business boards. Adina and husband Blake have two children, Mackenzie 10 and Preston 8. JAKE BREDSTRAND is the President of the Associated Students of Washington State University. He is eager to serve ASWSU for his third year and use his experience to guide the organization towards success. Jake was a member of the 38th Senate as well as a Director for the 2009-2010 Executive Staﬀ. He is a proud member of the Greek community and has enjoyed his time as a volunteer for the Athletic Foundation and the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences. He is excited for the new school year and is ready to assist any student in making the Cougar experience the best that it can be. Jake is from Vancouver, Washington and is a senior studying the diverse combination of Agriculture and Sports Management. CAROL CHIPMAN is a coowner of Chipman and Taylor Chevrolet, and this is her second call to duty as Board Member. Originally from Mountain Home, Idaho, she has lived in Pullman for 40 years. She loves the unique beauty of the rolling hills and the progressive, vibrant environment present in Pullman due

to the university. Carol sees the Chamber as the most vital of all groups for the health of the Pullman community, and is happy to contribute to her community by being a Board Member.

DOUG COX graduated from WSU with a degree in Ag Business (’93). Doug is employed as a Vice President & Commercial Lender at AmericanWest Bank (11Y). Pullman activities include Kiwanis, Palouse Discovery Science Center board member/ treasurer, Pullman Civil Service Commission, Pullman Junior Miss Fundraising chairman & is a WSU student athlete mentor. His hobbies include hunting, scuba, snow & water skiing. Doug’s wife Amy works in the College of Education and together they have 2 kids, Hunter (11) and Reagan (8) attending LMS & Sunnyside Elementary. SAM DIAL is the owner of Sam Dial Jewelers. He grew up in Potlatch, Idaho and graduated from the University of Idaho. Community involvement has been a priority to him his entire life and he is currently a Pullman Regional Hospital Foundation Director and a Pullman Rotary member. Sam’s wife Tanya works at Pullman Regional Hospital and together they have four kids. Sam’s main vision for Pullman is to be a destination for commerce in the region. Recently appointed as the Executive Director of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce,

MARIE DYMKOSKI has lived on the Palouse for over 20 years. She has four children and two grandchildren. Hired as the Oﬃce Manager in 2007, Marie has worked her way to the ED position and is very much looking forward to representing the City of Pullman and Pullman business. Marie is also directly involved with the Boy Scouts of America, and is a board

member of the Palouse Community Center and the Palouse Audubon Society.

CASEY FOX is the Director of Athletic Marketing at Washington State University. He returned to the Northwest 3 years ago after living in Utah & Maryland for the previous seven years. He has worked in the athletic departments at the University of Utah, the United States Naval Academy & Eastern Washington University. He grew up in Walla Walla and attended the University of Oregon for undergraduate and Eastern Washington University for Graduate School. His wife Heidi attended WSU and they enjoy the family atmosphere in Pullman. Casey and Heidi have two sons, CJ, who is two and Bo, who was born in March this past year. J. THOMAS HANDY JR. is a Former President of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and owner of Paradise Creek Brewery, and Landmark Property Development. Born in Wisconsin, Tom has resided in Pullman for over 26 years. He appreciates the small town atmosphere with the mix of big city influences that Pullman offers. Tom says that Pullman is not just a great place to raise and educate children; it is also a friendly business community that has a can-do forward thinking city administration. This is his seventh year on the board, and Tom says that the chamber gives him an opportunity to be active in an organization that truly makes a positive impact on the prosperity of Pullman and the surrounding area. COLLEEN HARRINGTON is an attorney and partner in the law firm of Irwin, Myklebust, Savage and Brown, P.S., where she specializes in civil litigation. She attended Washington State University for her undergraduate degree and following graduation, managed the Fairco gas

station on Grand Avenue for several years. Colleen moved to the Bay Area and attended the University of San Francisco Law School and graduated in 1986. Following graduation, she and her husband moved back to Pullman. Since her return, Colleen has been very active in the Pullman Community; she has had two six year terms with the United Way of Pullman Board of Directors, serving as campaign chair and board president. Colleen is currently serving as the president for the Whitman County Humane Society and the Pullman Chamber of Commerce.

CHARLENE JASPER owns Daily Grind Espresso, LLC and Licks Unlimited and is currently serving her third term as a Pullman Chamber of Commerce Board of Director member. She is originally from Walla Walla, and has lived in Pullman for 27 years. Charlene appreciates the small town community spirit and the opportunities that Pullman oﬀers her to get involved. Being a member of the business community requires an obligation on her part, she says, to give back to the community. Being on the Board of Directors allows Charlene to contribute to the experiences that both the business community and residents in Pullman enjoy. Former President

GLENN JOHNSON is the Mayor of Pullman and a Professor in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at WSU. One of his other jobs is serving as the “Voice of the Cougars”. Glenn is in his 31st year as the public address announcer for all WSU football and men’s basketball games. He is also a past Chamber President and has resided in Pullman for the past 32 years. Glenn just ﬁnished his term as president of the Association of Washington Cities and continues to serve on their board. AWC is an organization that represents all 281 cities in Washington. He is also chair of the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Board of Directors and volunteers on a number of chamber committees—Fourth of July (chair); Artesians, Government Aﬀairs and volunteers with Lentil festival and Cabaret.

PAUL KIMMELL currently serves as the Regional Business Manager for Avista Corporation. He was the former executive director of the Moscow Chamber of Commerce from 2001-2006 as well as serving three terms as a Latah County Commissioner. Kimmell has a BS in Geography/Urban Planning from Illinois State University and did graduate work in land management at the University of Idaho. He presently serves as chair of the Inland Northwest Partners, president of the Latah Economic Development Council, board member to the Inland Northwest Economic Alliance, Pullman United Way and past chair of the Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee. Paul is married to Constance and has three children, Katie 23, Sam 20, and Emma 17. ALLISON LEVENSELLER is the Property Director of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites and is also a past Chamber President. She has lived in Pullman for over 18 years, and is originally from Tacoma. Allison appreciates the very family oriented community that allows her and her husband to both have careers and stay close to home. Although her two children are now in college they loved growing up in Pullman and had fabulous experiences at our excellent schools. Allison enjoys being a board member as it gives her wonderful opportunities to share information and her ideas with others. Allison also serves on the United Way Board, Palouse Marketing Committee and the Lodging Tax Advisory Board. TREV MCCUAIG has been the store manager of Dissmore’s IGA since August 2007. Since his arrival, he has been active in the community with several events such as Palouse Cares, National Lentil Festival, Cabaret, and the Whitman County Humane Society where he also is a current board member. Trev feels that it is very important for businesses to get involved in the community. “I feel that through the support of events and a strong community involvement we will all be successful. Remember that communities build business, so let’s all work together and be involved!”

CHUCK MORROW is currently the Store Manager at Crimson & Gray where he has been since opening the store in June of 2004. Chuck spent ten years working as the textbook department manager and later Book Division Manager for the Bookie. Early in his tenure at the Bookie, Pat Wright taught him the benefits of chamber membership, and, when opening Crimson & Gray, the chamber was one of the first calls he made. He looks forward to giving back to an organization that has done so much to benefit the community. He and his wife Stacy have lived in the Palouse since June of 1994, where they raised their two sons JD & Sam. Former President

THERESA MYERS is the coowner of Myers Auto Rebuild and Towing. She is from Kent, and has lived in Pullman for 30 years. Theresa loves the small town lifestyle in Pullman, and she adds that it is a great place to raise kids, due to the great schools. There is a variety of cultural and sporting events in the region, and she enjoys being so close to outdoor recreation opportunities and likes to watch the seasons change. As a member of Board of Directors, she finds it meaningful to help build a vital economic base for the citizens of Pullman, and to promote Pullman and the region as a great place to live and do business. Theresa says that it is important to educate people that Pullman has many great businesses and that they don’t need to go out of town to find what they need, as it is offered right here in town. Past Chamber President

GARY SCHELL is a Realtor with Beasley Realty, co-owner of Evergreen Storage and GDS Properties and takes pride in promoting Pullman as a great place to live and do business. Gary appreciates the friendly people in Pullman and the uniqueness of living in a small community combined with the advantages of a large University. Gary ﬁnds his longtime position on the Board of Directors to be meaningful since he enjoys being involved in the community and helping out whenever possible. He is also involved in Rotary,

Meet the Board of Directors Pullman Hospital Foundation, Church activities, Fraternity advising and of course watching Cougar sports events. Gary and his wife Sue, an elementary teacher, ﬁnd Pullman a great place to live, work, and do business while raising their family.

PAUL STURM is the superintendent of the Pullman School District and has been a member of the chamber since moving to Pullman in 2002. He is a past chair of the Artesians. Paul and his wife, Nadine, love Pullman and Eastern Washington with its diverse climate and environments, along with the array of outdoor activities, and arts, entertainment, and athletic events. Both of them believe that the Palouse is a premium place to live and work. For Paul, being a member of the Chamber and the Chamber board is a way to learn about the perspective of the business community. He views the School District’s role providing learning opportunities for families to be a vital element of the quality of life and for the economic development of the area. Membership in the Chamber and on the Board is a satisfying way to give back to the community for the generous commitment to its schools and other city and county services. JOAN SWENSEN is a native of The Palouse where she was raised on a farm between Moscow and Genesee. Her 20’s were spent in the Bay Area (California) then back to Moscow and except for four years in Pennsylvania as a private chef, she has been doing restaurants since ‘81, starting with the Main Street Deli. Joan has been at Swilly’s as Exec. Chef since ‘95 and purchased the restaurant in 2003. She currently serves on the board of the UofI Prichard Art Gallery for the last six years. When not playing restaurant, Joan can be found riding her blind dressage horse, painting and collecting art, collecting wine for her private cellar, tending her perennial and vegetable garden, throwing dinner parties for friends, and hanging out with Tigger, Winnie and Fritz, her feline roommates. Joan looks forward to serving on the board of the Pullman Chamber with some of her favorite customers and friends!

MEL TAYLOR is the Executive Director of Real Estate and Local Relations at Washington State University. This is his sixth year as a board member and representative from WSU. He appreciates that there is minimal traﬃc in Pullman, even with all of the cultural opportunities of the city. Being a member of the Board of Directors gives Mel a chance to close the Town/Gown gap in business relations in Pullman, and work with the Chamber to bring new businesses into Pullman. MIKE WAITE is current past president of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and is a Financial Representative for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. He is from Weiser, Idaho and has lived in the Palouse Region for over 20 years. Mike enjoys the small town hospitality of Pullman, with the amenities typically found only in larger cities. He ﬁnds that being a member of the Board of Directors is meaningful because it gives him the opportunity to be proactive in the community, and to promote Pullman as a great place to live and do business. PAT WRIGHT is another long term member of the Board of Directors, and, another former Chamber President. Since her retirement as General Manager of The Bookie, Pat has remained active in the Pullman community. She enjoys working part-time at Neill’s Flowers and Gifts and on the Pullman City Council. In addition to being a Chamber of Commerce Board member, Pat is President of Pullman Regional Hospital Auxiliary and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Pullman Education Foundation. Pat has lived in Pullman for 35 years. She is originally from New York, and moved to California before residing in Pullman. She says that Pullman is a wonderful, safe place to raise a family, to enjoy the many amenities offered through the university and to appreciate the closeness and warmth of a small community in terms of living, working, and doing business. By being a Board member, Pat says that she has the opportunity to promote Pullman and all that it offers, and is a way for her to develop strong business relationships that provide a gateway to participate in different projects and activities that truly make a difference in the community.

MIKE YATES is President of Very Cool Spaces LLC, a and Office Manager for Newstalk property and business 1150/KQQQ-AM and Hit development company, focusing Radio KHTR-FM 104.3 radio on the re-use and re-development stations. She is a former Chamber of downtown properties. He President, and is a long term member of the along with his wife Debbie, also operate Chamber’s Board of Directors. The Pullman Chamber of Commerce is your voice to government in Pullman, Olympia and Washington D.C. We concern ourselves with issues that impact business and the livability of the Pullman community at large. We work closely with City and County oﬃcials and have a seat on the Association of Washington Business Board. When you join the Pullman Chamber of Commerce you are being heard.

This weekly email keeps members up to date about various Chamber activities and projects, as well as to alert areas of criminal activity aﬀecting members. Members can submit information on upcoming events or special programs.

Chamber members can supply brochures, ﬂiers, or coupons designed for new residents to the Palouse region for inclusion in relocation packets. This is a free service for Chamber members. Members need to provide 100 inserts at a time to the Chamber oﬃce. Information should be no larger than one sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper (can be folded).

NETWORKING The Pullman Chamber of Commerce provides numerous opportunities to meet other business leaders in our community.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEONS Normally scheduled the second Tuesday of each month from 12 –1 p.m., these catered events are opportunities to mingle with other business leaders, learn about the Pullman community in general, or learn about current business issues. Plan to promote your business during Soapbox time, allowing you up to sixty seconds to highlight your business or organization. Sponsor a luncheon and receive additional opportunity to promote your business.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS These events provide opportunities for host businesses to show oﬀ their facilities and products, as well as an informal time of socializing and “catching up with your fellow Chamber members.” Food and beverages are provided by the host business.

CHAMBER WEBSITE The Pullman Chamber of Commerce website contains a full directory of our members including business name, address, phone number, and web link. Members are listed alphabetically, as well as by business category. Our website receives thousands of hits a day, increasing the visibility of our member businesses.

PULLMAN COMMUNITY UPDATE Members may submit information about their business for inclusion on the Chamber pages of the Pullman Community Update. This newsletter is sent to more than 14,000 city residents. Showcase new product lines, business changes, and your upcoming events. Information must be supplied 45 days in advance of the month you wish to have your information appear.

MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY This printed guide is produced annually and lists all Chamber members by business category, as well as alphabetically. The directory also includes community proﬁle information. It is sent to those requesting relocation information, is available to in-person visitors, and delivered to fellow Chamber of Commerce Members. In addition, the 2011 Membership Directory will be inserted into the Moscow Pullman Daily News for distribution.

BUSINESS CARD AND LITERATURE DISPLAY The Chamber of Commerce offers a business card and literature display in our 24-hour accessible foyer. We also offer space inside the office. Hundreds of people visit the office each month providing excellent exposure for your business.

MAILING LABELS Members can purchase the entire membership mailing list on labels for $25. Non-members can purchase the lists for $50 on labels. We do not provide the list digitally or on disk.

RELOCATION INQUIRIES LIST An excellent way to target new residents to the community is mailing information before they arrive in town. Each month the names and addresses of those requesting information can be purchased from the Chamber for $10.

SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS Periodically, the Chamber sponsors workshops to help equip you in your business dealings or to update you on changing regulations.

BULK MAIL STAMP The US Post Oﬃce oﬀers reduced prices on presorted bulk mail if certain requirements are met. The Chamber’s bulk mail permit number is available for members to use.

CERTIFICATES OF ORIGIN This oﬃcial stamp provides proof to businesses and governments that the goods being shipped were produced in the United States. Many international ﬁrms request such proof.

GRAND OPENINGS AND RIBBON CUTTINGS These events are provided for new members as a welcome to the community and are also available for business members who are expanding or dedicating new facilities.

SMALL BUSINESS SERVICE The Chamber has a large network of business connections. Whether you are looking for sites, developers or counseling, the Chamber can point you in the right direction. We work closely with the Small Business Development Center and the local Economic Development agencies to provide support for our business community.

MEMBERSHIP DECAL Study shows that when a consumer knows a small business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Display your decal proudly. The decal is an important way to tell your customers you support the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Look for this logo when shopping in Pullman.

REFERRALS The Chamber of Commerce proudly serves as the front door to the community. Thousands of requests are made each year for referrals to businesses. Only Chamber members are referred unless there are no Chamber members in the category being requested.

CHAMBER MEMBER OF THE MONTH Tell your story as “Chamber Member of the Month”. Highlight your business on a story board at the Chamber oﬃce, where visitors stop regularly for information. We will include your company in a special recognition section of the Pullman Community Update and on the PCC website. This service is only available for members. Cost is $100 per month. The Pullman Chamber of Commerce has developed the following committees to aid in the eﬀort to make Pullman a better place to live, work and do business. New members, thoughts and creative ideas are always welcome. AGRICULTURE/BUSINESS Ron Wachter

This committee fosters the issues pertaining to the agricultural community and supports the need to grow and develop the agricultural industry. Projects: 4th of July BBQ, Ag Outlook Conference in February and Port Tour in November.

ARTESIAN AMBASSADORS Bill Skavdahl

An honorary branch of the chamber, whose members act as representatives at ground breakings, grand openings, dedications and other events. Membership is based on service to the chamber.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Charlene Jasper

The Business Development committee is a

group of local business people and retailers who meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues aﬀecting the business environment. This committee also plans promotional opportunities for the Pullman business community.

This committee considers, reviews and acts on local, state and national issues that directly aﬀect the Pullman community. It also strives to inform chamber members of these issues and increase overall awareness. Business growth and retention is the priority of this committee. This includes: encouraging business retention, recruiting new business, and the continual quest for new business growth ideas and opportunities. Projects: Seminars, producing business packages, monitoring and encouraging transportation issues in Pullman.

This group plans, coordinates, and strategizes for this great celebration that is held each year in Sunnyside Park. Activities include: ﬁreworks, live entertainment, BBQ, concessions, children’s games and more!

This three-day community event is held in late August each year. Activities include: Live Entertainment, Grand Parade, 5k Fun Run, 100K Bike Ride, Lentil Lane Food Court, Lentil Gallery Arts & Crafts, Microbrewery Tasting Tent, Lentil Land Children’s Area, Wine Tasting, Free Lentil Chili, Cook-Oﬀ Competition, Sports Tournaments and more. The “Pod Squad” always likes to see new faces, hear fresh ideas, and welcomes a challenge.

THE EARLY YEARS Located at the junction of three streams (South Fork of the Palouse River, Missouri Flat Creek and Dry Creek) Pullman has a rich history going back to the 1870s when the area east of Colfax was first opened for settlement. First on the site was Bolin Farr from Missouri who settled on present day Park Street and later built a house there. Second was Daniel McKenzie who came in 1877 and built a small home approximately on the present day location of the Manor Lodge on Paradise Street. In 1881 Farr and McKenzie platted the town site. The town’s application for a post office called “South Palouse” was rejected by the Post Office Department.

THE FOUR HILLS OF PULLMAN

A distinct feature of Pullman is the four hills that surround it, playing a large part in the way the town has been developed. To the southwest is Sunnyside Hill. The first homes to receive the gentle warmth of the morning sun are those near Gladish School on Sunnyside Hill. To the southeast is Pioneer Hill, originally known as Methodist Hill. Actually, the Methodist Church building, Pullman’s first, was built on Sunnyside Hill in 1882. The Congregational church was built on Methodist Hill. But, the Methodist minister and many of the church members, such as the McKenzies and the Squires, made their homes on Methodist Hill. Old time “shouting” prayer meetings were held in these homes. Pullman Parks & Recreation, Your Recreation Connection, oﬀers a variety of sport activities ranging from youth soccer leagues to adult golf lessons, and white water rafting trips to art lessons. Speciﬁc information on activities and classes are listed in a tri-annual brochure available at City Hall, Pioneer Center, Pullman Aquatic & Fitness Center and the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. Each has its own unique features and recreational opportunities.

CITY PLAYFIELD 820 South St (8.66 acres) This is the main facility for Pullman’s summer sports activities. It contains the city softball ﬁelds, a jogging track, volleyball standards, batting cage and picnic tables.

CITY OF PULLMAN RV PARK 770 SE South Street (Riverview Road and South St) (24 spaces) All 24 spaces have full water, electricity, sewer and cable hook-ups. It is open from April 1 to November 30. A few tent spaces are also available. Contact Parks & Recreation at 338-3227 to make reservations.

Dilke & South St (7.92 acres) This park was purchased from William Daw in 1903 and named after William C. Kruegel in 1958. It contains a spacious picnic area, BBQ area, full sized tennis courts, expansive playground, small football ﬁeld, baseball diamond, and soccer ﬁeld and volleyball standards.

MCGEE PARK 1220 NE Lybecker Street (3.04 acres) There is a BBQ and picnic shelter located near children’s playground facility. There is also a baseball diamond and a fenced basketball court.

MILITARY HILL PARK 500 NW Larry Street (25 acres) Adjoining Pullman High School, there are 6 tennis courts, 2 baseball diamonds, playﬁelds, playgrounds, a picnic shelter and BBQ area. Pullman Aquatic & Fitness Center is adjacent to the park.

335 NW Terre View Drive (3.25 acres) Gifted by the Schweitzer family. The park was completed and dedicated in 2002. Features include a picnic shelter, restrooms, playgrounds, walking/bike paths, natural landscaping pier and wetland.

WOODCRAFT PARK 675 SE South Street (.84 acres) This is a peaceful picnic area with beautiful shade trees in the southeast part of town.

Donated by the Itanis in 1997, the park is now under development as a natural area. Nature plantings and paths are being planned and constructed. A connecting path to Sunnyside Park will eventually be developed.

Located near Reaney Park, this area includes a skateboard facility, public restrooms and trail link to the Bill Chipman Trail. Benches are located along the Palouse River.

Home of Pullman’s annual 4th of July community celebration, this park contains a picnic and BBQ shelter that overlooks two ponds 705 SE Derby Street (13 acres) The beautiful formal gardens include a reﬂecting and a waterfall.
