Sama Dams The music of Sama Dams steals from you most virtuously-it will rob your sense of time and leave you wondering how long you’ve been awash in sound, rhythm, and ether. On their fourth release, “Say It” released on Friendship Fever on April 6, Lisa Adams emerges from the background to deliver commanding lead vocals in her clarion soprano alongside partner Sam and the highly textured drumming of Chris Hermsen. Almost in answer to the muted ambivalence that marks movements from the band’s previous “Comfort in Doubt,” “Say It” features the trio striking boldly throughout, both musically and thematically. According to Sam, “It’s about being more honest about what we’re thinking and feeling.” Inspiration came from a year of watching silence make a mess of love in friendships close to the band. “Something seems off-you sniff something,” says Sam. “You don’t acknowledge it exists, and so by letting a small problem go, you allow it to grow.” “What’s the use for pockets if they’re

empty?/Fill them up with things you use against me,” sings Lisa on the album’s first track, succinctly summing up the war of attrition underlying a failing relationship. The band’s hallmark of grooving angularity packs even more punch when partnered with direct pathos, as in tracks like “Driving By.” Melding the wailing riffiness of fellow Midwest native Billy Corgan at his best with the cool synthesizer of a hundred beloved 80s soundtracks gone by, Sama Dams takes their distinctly leftfield sound into anthem territory, and does it with audacious and tender authenticity. The album feels like a coming-of-age for the band, who have been creating and touring out of Portland, Oregon since 2012. Having first pitched their tent in a time and place that revolved around the folky fusion of bands like The Decembrists, Sama Dams now claims a favored seat in a music scene edgier and more eclectic than the Pacific Northwest itself. The Adams’s, proactive about fueling the creative partnership at the heart of the band, are constantly looking both outward and inward for inspiration. They have toured relentlessly both domestically and abroad since the release of their first full-length album, honing their ambidextrous live performance to a soulful effortlessness that belies the complexity of the music. Their dynamism is infectious, spawning side projects and writing experiments that span states and genres.

DASH DASH is an award winning light-afire-under-you rockin’ soul band with a desire for honest and entertaining lyrics. Founded in February 2018, DASH began writing songs together with a passion for getting people out on the dance floor. The Bozeman, Montana band brings their dance party vibe to any stage with a wild blend of funk, soul, rock, and pop. In their first year as a band, DASH wrote and recorded their debut full length album, ‘SUPER’, and began touring throughout the Northwest. In 2018, DASH was voted Best New Local Band, #2 Best Local Album Released, and was the only band less than a year old to place in the Best Local Rock Band category. DASH hits the road in 2019 to bring their brand of party soul rock to a city near you. PROUDLY SPONSORED BY:

Meet the Band Katytii Korte, Vocals and Bass Kaytii Korte was born and raised in Montana. Always singing from a very young age, it quickly turned into a passion. Her first love was found in choral and operatic music, studying classically for eight years. Upon graduating college, she thought her performance days were over, until joining local Bozeman band, STiLGONE, singing back up. Singing with STiLGONE helped her discover a stage presence and desire she didn’t know she had for live band performance. Songwriting became a new outlet, and DASH was dreamed up in January, 2018. Kayti enjoys the outdoors, spending time with family, and drinking on patios Ben Morris, Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard Ben Morris hails from Moscow, Idaho. He started playing guitar at age nine, and began playing in bands at age fifteen, spanning genres from rock, to soul and funk, to live hip hop. Music and songwriting has always been a creative outlet for Ben, as long as it’s a soundtrack for a party. Writing his first songs at a young age, he’s mastered the party jam, working to create a “goodtime” environment wherever he’s at. Ben graduated from Montana State University with degrees in Music Technology and Business Marketing, using them to promote shows in the Bozeman area, when he’s not on the road with DASH.

FRIDAY, JULY 19

Polly O’Keary & The Rhythm Method A century ago, blues was born in the fields of the South, played on porches and in little backwoods bars by kerosene lamp. The times have changed, and it’s a rare blues musician who grew up picking cotton and going home to learn to play by the light of a kerosene lamp. Polly O’Keary certainly didn’t. Well, that is, she didn’t pick cotton. She picked apples. But she learned to read music by kerosene lamp, in a log cabin in a remote part of Washington State. She started playing in ex-pat bars in Mexico at 16, and Eastern Washington watering holes for rural farm workers at the age of 17. She dropped out of school with an 8th grade education, married a prison-bound man at the age of 18 and by the time she was 21 had logged more stage hours

than most musicians twice her age. She’d drunk as much as a fair number of them as well. At 28, upon seeing Jeff Healey at a friend’s bar in Canada, she became obsessed with blues, studying and practicing the genre until carpel tunnel syndrome temporarily rendered her hands nearly immobile, and she quickly came to the attention of the Pacific Northwest blues scene with her powerful and emotional voice and her frenetic stage presence. Today, she’s a PhD student, a world-traveled bassist, one of Washington State’s most highlyawarded female blues singers and songwriters (six-time Washington Blues Society Best Female Vocalist, four-time Best Blues Songwriter, etc.), doesn’t drink at all, and no longer visits lovers in prisons. But her music reflects the life of a modern blues woman; she’s seen the river rise and take everything more than once, and lived to laugh, sing, and write music about it. Polly O’Keary is today’s blues woman, rooted in tradition, but informed by the 21st Century. Pulling in influences from zydeco, country, funk, jazz, rockabilly, surf and rock and roll, she and her trio, Polly O’Keary and the Rhythm Method, bring a searing and joyful performance of today’s blues to audiences across the U.S. and Canada

ORGONE Dale Jennings (bass), Sam Halterman (drums), and singer/lyricist Adryon de León to form a permanent nucleus. Establishing a solid core of musicians was instrumental in creating such a cohesive, tight LP. From the a cappella opening of “All Good Things” to the dance floor filler “Easy Love,” Reasons packs a punch.

For their tenth studio album, Reasons, ORGONE retreated to the tranquil solitude of Joshua Tree in southern California. The nine-song collection illuminates a band hitting its stride, capturing the raw power and refined sensibilities that defines ORGONE For nearly twenty years ORGONE (a universal life force, pronounced or-gone) has churned out gritty funk and soul recordings and toured relentlessly across the United States and Europe. Traditionally both the studio and live iterations of the band drew on a tight-knit collective of the West Coast’s finest funk and soul musicians—although founding members Sergio Rios (guitar/engineer) and Dan Hastie (keyboards) have been constant anchors. However, since late 2013, Rios and Hastie have been joined by

At first, de León launches into the vocal stratosphere before coming back to Earth with delicate harmonies as the band channels late 70s Fleetwood Mac. In just over four minutes ORGONE seamlessly channels disco, boogie funk, and smooth 70s California rock. De León is front and center on Reasons, and she does not disappoint. Whether she’s evoking the deep soulfulness of Chaka Khan on “Hands” or the bedroom sweetness of Minnie Ripperton on “Whisper to Me,” de León’s versatile vocal performance firmly places her in the top echelon of soul singers today. ORGONE’s accolades are too long to list in entirety. ORGONE’s live show captivates audiences and packs dance floors—whether it’s on sold out headlining tours; sharing the stage with The Roots, Al Green, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and Galactic; or appearances at fests like Bonnaroo, New Orleans Jazz Fest, High Sierra, Bear Creek, and Jam Cruise.

SATURDAY JULY 20

Greyhounds Rising out of the Austin, Texas music scene, Greyhounds, a duo comprising guitarist Andrew Trube and keyboardist Anthony Farrell, feature a unique sound that mixes R&B, soul, funk, and the Bakersfield country of Buck Owens into a style that has been described as ” Hall & Oats meets ZZ Top,” and the duo’s exciting live shows have earned them a large and loyal fan following. The pair met in the late ’90s, and immediately began writing and playing together, placing tunes with artists like Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks while building up a songwriting catalog and gathering new fans with each show. Greyhounds have four full-length albums out and are currently working on a new full-length record with producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Deer Tick)

SATURDAY JULY 20

Jelly Bread

Jelly Bread’s musical alchemy blends a dash of alt-rock with soul and funk, yet is thoroughly steeped in Rock-Americana. The band’s chameleonic playlist is highlighted by dual vocals, four part harmonies, in-the-pocket drum and bass grooves, swampy lap steel guitar, dirt under the fingernails guitar licks, and take-’em-to-church organ that is downright appetizing. Jelly Bread has emerged with a high-energy calling card that melds elements of desert twang and the urban tones of funk & rock, balanced by exceptional songwriting and storytelling.

Jelly Bread has been delving into more extensive touring this past year. This past year, Jelly Bread has been tapped to perform opening duties for the likes of Robert Cray, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Dragon Smoke (members of Galactic), The Motet, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Pimps of Joytime, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds and performed on a bill featuring Bruce Hornsby and Railroad Earth. The band has appeared at premiere festivals to include Joshua Tree, Strawberry and High Sierra Music Festivals. The band members include: Dave Berry, on rhythm guitar/lap steel guitar & vocals; Cliff Porter on drums & vocals; Alvin Johnson on keyboard & vocals and Ian Lindsay on bass& vocals.
