SOCIAL SECURITY & AARP WORK TO SLAM THE SCAM

AARP is helping SSA and its Office of the Inspector General warn you about scammers using Social Security in coronavirus (COVID-19) scams. AARP has a new webinar available for free (registration required), advising the public that scammers’ tactics continue to evolve, and they are now using coronavirus to try to scare us. Don’t be fooled! Scammers may contact you by phone, letter, text, or email impersonating government officials to trick you into providing money or personal information. They may tell you Social Security is going to stop your benefits because its offices are closed, or ask you to pay a fee to receive extra benefits due to the pandemic. Scammers may even pose as COVID-19 contact tracers working to stop the spread of the virus and ask for payment or your Social Security Number. Don’t be fooled!

Social Security and other government agencies will never:

• Call you to request information or payment due to coronavirus or office closures. • Threaten to arrest you because of an identity theft problem. • Require you to put money into a protected account. • Ask you for payment by gift card, wire transfer, internet currency, or by mailing cash. • Tell you to make up a story to tell your family or bank employees about why you need gift cards or cash. Social Security continues to pay benefits during the pandemic. Social Security has closed offices to the public to follow social distancing guidelines, but its employees are still hard at work. If you have questions about how the coronavirus has affected Social Security services, visit SCAM cont. on page 15

MEDICAID FACTS WHAT IS MEDICAID?

By definition, Medicaid is a jointly funded program managed by both state and federal governments. Medicaid offers medical treatment, including nursing home care for low-income individuals who are 65 or older, blind or disabled.

Social Security won’t cover everything.

FACT: Many People who require nursing home care cannot afford to pay the costs.

Do you have a plan? When it comes to funeral costs, Social Security pays very little, leaving your family with unexpected payments.

Merchant Memorial Group

Pre-planning provides you with the time needed to make practical, detailed decisions that reflect your standards, lifestyle, taste and budget. We can advise you of the total cost, and the funds you set aside today can help your family in the future.

Because of the high costs, a high percentage of residents that live in nursing homes rely on Medicaid to pay for their care. Today, an estimated four percent of the over 65 age population lives in a nursing home. As the proportion of the older people increases due to longer life expectancies, it is likely that more and more people will need nursing home care.

The rules for qualifying for Medicaid change often and vary state to state and from country to country. Medicaid is not considered an entitlement program like Social Security; rather it is a needs-based program. Because it is based on the need, a person is not eligible to receive Medicaid benefits as a matter of right. Each person must make himself or herself eligible. As a component of qualifying for Medicaid, a person must have limited assets. To limit assets, a person may be required to “spend down” his or her assets to a level as determined by the appropriate regulatory agency in his or her area. The concept of “spending down” is simple. Essentially, the

SOCIAL SECURITY Medicaid agencies will provide funding for nursing home care only once a person’s assets have been reduced to the specified limits.

FREEING YOURSELF FROM THE CONE OF SILENCE? Courtesy of Simon Audiology

At his first appointment, Dan joked that he was getting his hearing aids as a gift for his wife. Dan had hearing loss, but he understood how important it was for his wife to feel heard. Humans are social creatures. It is important to be able to share ourselves with others. But it

is vital to have that sharing accepted.

When we share ourselves with others, we feel connected to them. When we feel connected, we feel understood. When we feel understood, we don’t feel alone in the world.

With hearing loss it's much harder to accept and reflect what you're told. This leads to tension and strain in any relationship, most notably in a marriage. Typically, husbands and wives react differently to their spouse’s hearing loss. Husbands commonly tell me that their wife, who has hearing loss, is less available. So, he adjusts by taking care of things without consulting her.

Wives, on the other hand, crave more engagement from their husbands with hearing loss. This was the case with Dan’s wife. Some wives share deep frustration and resignation with not being heard. It’s hard to be in a relationship with a person who can’t hear you. If you or your spouse can't hear easily, conversation is SILENCE cont. on page 15
