Palouse most likely comes from the name of the major village of the Palouse Indians. The name is the Sehaptin (Indian) word for the village, “palus” which means “something sticking down in the water.” The village was located at the conuence of the Palouse and Snake Rivers, and the something sticking down in the water was a large rock. The Palouse believed the rock to be a solidied heart of Beaver who played an important role in their religious beliefs.
The Palouse region has since become known for growing wheat and legumes and is home to small towns with a rich history and charm. Pullman, Washington and Moscow, Idaho are the main hub communities. Settlers arrived in 1871, to homestead or buy the abundant government-owned prairie grasslands so valuable for farming. Originally Moscow was named “Paradise Valley” however there was already a town with that name in Idaho Territory. Moscow’s name was chosen

Issac Stevens, the rst territorial governor of Washington, penned the rst written description of the Palouse country, while surveying for railroad placement in the early 1850’s. Today, mesmerizing beauty and a sweeping landscape of rolling hills and plateaus greet visitors to this distinctive region north of the Snake River in Southeast Washington and North Central Idaho.
This is the place simply to drive leisurely along the gently curving highways, sprinkled with antique shops and wineries, with easy access to hiking and biking and above all, photography. If you ever needed to stop the world and relax, this is the place for it. The land was originally occupied by the Palus tribe, renowned as expert equestrians. The source of the word,

by Postmaster Samuel Neff because it reminded him of his hometown of Moscow, PA In 1875, the city’s rst store was opened on what is now Main Street. The arrival of the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company’s line in 1885 sparked a typical railroad boom town. Moscow was incorporated in 1887
followed by the creation of Latah County in 1888 with Moscow as the county seat. In 1889 Moscow was chosen as the site for a land-grant institution, the University of Idaho, which propelled the city into a trading and population center for the county. Idaho achieved statehood in 1890.

The rolling hills of the Palouse offer highly productive crop land for local famers. In the spring, the hills are bright green with growing crops. And before harvest in the fall, the hills are brushed with the golden colors of crops ready for harvest…the “amber waves of grain”. Area crops include wheat, barley, dry peas, lentils, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), canola, and grass for hay or seed. While wheat and other small grains are the most famous crops coming from this dryland farming area, dry peas, lentils and chickpeas have been grown for decades as well in the crop rotation. Grouped together, peas, lentils and garbanzo beans are called pulses; pulses is a term used to describe legumes that are used primarily for food.

Typically planted in April or May, pulses are harvested in August or September. Pulses are used in canned and prepared foods or sold in dry packaging for use at home. And a lot of the garbanzo beans are used in hummus, a refrigerated snack food that has increased in popularity in the last decade. Most of the agriculture products are exported including about 90% of all wheat grown in the area. Countries that buy Palouse area wheat include Japan, Taiwan and other Pacic Rim countries. Shipping out of Portland, local agriculture products nd their way to dinner tables around the world. And a majority of pulse crops are also exported with major markets being India, China, the EU, Philippines and Peru.

Travel around Moscow on SMART Transit that offers a fare free xed route, or catch a cab. You could even rent a bike from Paradise Creek Bicycles to get yourself around town. Our region has 36 miles of paved trails, so you can walk, run, bike, or hike everywhere that you need to go! The Palouse has easy access via north-south routes of U.S. Highway 195 in Washington, and U.S. Highway 95 in Idaho. Moscow and Pullman are linked by state Highway 270. Latah Trail Foundation
The Latah Trail is a county owned, linear park for non-motorized transportation and recreation. It is a 16 mile pedestrian/ bicycle path from Moscow through Troy and into Bear Creek Canyon. The Latah Trail is ADA accessible for most of its length. It is open to all persons of all abilities and ages. It is open from dawn to dusk and is free to use. The City of Moscow’s Farmers Market began as a Moscow Food Co-op venture in 1976. Originally located in the parking lot behind the current City Hall building, the Moscow Farmers Market began with only a few farm vendors. Today, the Moscow Farmers Market has over 100 vendors and is rated one of the top farmers markets in the nation by American Farmland Trust. The mission of the Market is to celebrate life on the Palouse by providing the community with the opportunity to buy and sell locally grown farm and food products (e.g. crops, meat, cheese, wine, etc.) and distinctive handmade goods. The Market encourages and supports sustainable economic, social and environmental practices. The Market operates Saturday’s May – October, 8 am – 1pm on Main Street between 3rd Street and 6th Street in downtown Moscow.

It is now one of the oldest cedar groves in the world. The 240-acre grove is dominated by a dense canopy of large western red cedar with a carpet of lady fern. The trail has a gentle gradient making it accessible to older persons or those with moderate physical impairments. The trail width is about 40 inches. Dworshak State Park Dworshak State Park is 50 miles southeast of Moscow on Dworshak Reservoir. The park offers 105 RV and tent camping spaces near Freeman Creek, a day-use shelter, archery range, and boat ramp. The park also features a playground. Bill Chipman Palouse Trail Pullman to Moscow, 7 miles, easy, often busy. The centerpiece of Palouse riding, walking, and more. The Bill Chipman Palouse Trail connects Moscow and Pullman with 7 miles of smooth pathway parallel to state Highway 270. The Chipman Trail is at with only a slight elevation gain from Pullman to Moscow. Access to Bill Chipman Palouse Trail from Pullman: 1400 SE Bishop Blvd. - near the Quality Inn Paradise Creek parking lot or from Moscow: Perimeter Drive - near the University of Idaho Campus.
Ed Corkill Memorial Trail Distance varies, easy. The trail begins near Kendrick High School and runs along state Highway 3 and scenic Potlatch Creek for 5.3 miles ending at the Juliaetta Centennial Park and baseball eld. Idler’s Rest Conservatory This beautiful conservatory, just northeast of Moscow, offers idyllic woods adjacent to Palouse farmland. You can also cross over the road and hike the trails beyond the creek. Just a short drive from Moscow, take Mountain View Road north then turn east on Idler’s Rest Road. Paradise Path Moscow, 1.5 miles, easy, urban. The Paradise Path is a system of connected paths and bike lanes running roughly eastwest through Moscow. Gain entrance to the Paradise Path from the Chipman Trail on the west, the Latah Trail on the east, and from many points within Moscow, including Sixth Street in downtown Moscow. Stretches 4 ½ miles from the bank of historic Almota Creek through Boyer Park and eastward to the base of Lower Granite Dam. Moscow has great neighboring communities, and they offer a variety of great things to do, see, taste and experience. The area around Bovill, Idaho was rst homesteaded in 1890, and around 1900 was purchased by a wealthy Englishman, Hugh Bovill. He and his family made Bovill their home for more than a decade, during which time they built a post ofce, general store, and a hotel to accommodate hunters and anglers seeking to enjoy the region’s riches. While lumber is the primary industry, Bovill is nestled in a beautiful mountain meadow, with opportunities

for great camping, hunting and shing available in all directions. Moose Creek Reservoir is a local favorite, offering a peaceful location for camping, shing and recreation for the entire family. Camas Prairie Winery also has a tasting room located in their downtown. In the 1880’s and 1890’s the area around Deary, Idaho was homesteaded, predominately by Scandinavians from the Midwest. In 1905 Potlatch Lumber Company engineers decided to locate a station of the Washington, Idaho & Montana Railway on this site, and the company’s general manager William Deary worked to establish a townsite.
The mountain north of town that rises 1,100 feet above its surroundings is known as Potato Hill (elev. 4,017). It is a volcanic vent of undetermined age. Early residents called it Spud Hill, and the most optimistic referred to it as Mt. Deary. Two forested reservoirs are nearby and offer camping, hunting, shing, and hiking. Visit scenic Genesse, Idaho, and enjoy the historic buildings downtown, take a country drive to admire the beautiful rolling hills of wheat, barley, garbanzo beans, peas and lentils, or shop at the local antique store. Another great adventure is to visit the national historic site, White Springs Ranch. Take a trip back in time and see the circa 1876 log cabin and the 1884-1904 farm home. Genesse Community Day, the rst Saturday of June, draws families to enjoy the car show, basketball tournament, quilt show, or the Cow Creek Run.
Visitors to Juliaetta, Idaho, love to stop by the historical Bank of Juliaetta, now known as “First Bank of Pizza,” and admire the original ceiling and safe, while enjoying homemade pizza for the entire family. Visitors are always welcome to tour the privately-owned Castle Museum, which was constructed by Abraham A. Adams in the early 1900s. Today, the museum’s rooms are lled with a collection of antiques and artifacts relating to local and Pacic Northwest history. Visitors can also venture to Colter’s Creek Winery for a wine tasting. Thomas Kirby founded Kendrick, Idaho, in 1889. Kendrick’s rich history can still be enjoyed today. Visitors can admire many of the historic buildings on Main Street, tour the Bethany and Leland Churches, pull over to investigate the basalt columns that many university students travel to see, or shop at one

of the many antique shops downtown. Kendrick also welcomes visitors from all over the country to their annual Locust Blossom Festival, which is held the last Saturday of May. Potlatch Idaho, is one of the most unique towns in all of Idaho. In 1905, Weyerhauser-organized Potlatch Lumber Company began building the largest white pine lumber mill of the day. To accommodate the many hundreds of workers needed to run the mill, the company built its own town, complete with houses, stores, schools, churches, and a gymnasium. Visitors today will nd many remnants of company town days, such as rows of tidy, identical homes, though the company long ago divested its interests. To learn more, visit the Potlatch Historical Society, housed in the beautifully restored W.I.&M. Depot. The spectacular scenery surrounding Potlatch consists of deep pine forests and grassy meadows, clear rivers and babbling mountain streams, providing year-round recreational opportunities. Potlatch provides excellent accommodations for hunting, shing, camping, and other
recreational activities. Eight miles west of Moscow, is charming Pullman, Washington. With a population of 33,000, Pullman offers spectacular natural beauty plus urban amenities due to Washington State University, which occupies one-third of the town. Pullman has a fresh, small town feel, and the locals are welcoming and excited that you are exploring their town. Visitors can also explore Troy, Idaho, a town that played an important role in the early commercial history of Latah County. Thanks to the arrival of the railroad around 1890, Troy served as a center of trade for both agriculture and lumber through the rst decade of the 20th century. Today the community of Troy is a fun place for visitors to make a pit stop and check out some of the local shops downtown, take a picnic to the park, or enjoy the Latah Trail that connects Troy to Moscow.
