Palouse Canola Field
History of the Palouse Originally occupied by the nomadic Palus tribe, renowned as expert equestrians, it is generally thought that FrenchCanadian fur traders converted the name of the tribe to the
more familiar French word pelouse, which means “land with short thick grass.” The area has since become renowned for growing wheat and legumes and is home to small towns with a rich history and charm. Pullman, Washington and Moscow, Idaho are the main hub communities. In 1889, the State of Idaho named Moscow as the home of the state’s land grant institution, the University of Idaho. Just across the state line, Pullman, Washington was named in 1890 to be the home of the land grant institution of Washington State University. Today, two world class Universities give residents access to “big city” cultural and recreational events, while experiencing the charm and safety of small towns with a mild climate, clean air, highly rated schools, and a low crime rate.

Suggested Photo Routes Doug: A Palouse excursion I always enjoy, is taking Highway 95 south about 5 miles from Moscow, ID and turning left onto Eid Rd. In less than a minute you'll experience picturesque rolling hills with a classic salt barn in a little draw. This locale is absolutely excellent year around and at its very best between 1 & 2 hours before sunset.
Alan: 1) Palouse Falls State Park – about 2 hours from Pullman. Depart town late morning or around noon. Palouse Falls is located in a canyon which receives afternoon light. Travel north on 195 to Colfax, then west on Hwy 26 to Washtucna. Turn left (south) onto 260/261 and follow to Palouse Falls Rd. 2) Boyer Park & Marina – about 30 minutes from Pullman. Take Old Wawawai Rd west and follow the Boyer Park signs. 3) Steptoe Butte State Park – Great for sunrise or sunset and can drive to the top for spectacular views. or go without and explore. Some of my most enjoyable photography has been while lost. Keep in mind that the hills surrounding you are private land. If you plan to trek out across the fields, make a point to introduce yourself to the land owner get their permission. Late spring and early summer are certainly the best times of the year for photographing green and then golden fields of wheat. May and early June often have less stable weather, resulting is a bit more of a gamble for photographers on a tight schedule, but also hold greater potential for dramatic light. Winter in the Palouse is often dull and gray, but a clear sunrise over fields freshly dusted with snow can be a real prize to a photographer lucky enough to be out at the right time.
Basics:
Always bring extra film and your tripod Scout your locations ahead of time, when possible. Head out when weather and light conditions are at their best or most interesting. Consider investing in a topographic map of the area, or stop by the Whitman County Courthouse for a county map showing the back roads in the region. Caution – many of these roads are primitive. Believe all warning signs you encounter. For best light, shoot ½ hour before sunrise/ sunset and up to 1 hour after sunrise/ sunset. Interesting lighting conditions also occur when storms brew over the hills.

In 1905 Potlatch log home at what is now the Lumber Company engineers center of Bovill, and the vicinity decided to locate a station came to be known as Warren of the Washington, Idaho Meadows. In 1899 an English & Montana Railway on this Lord, Hugh Bovill, visited the site. The town was named for area and in 1901 purchased the William Deary, the company’s land. He soon returned with general manager, who secured his wife, Lady Charlotte, and the claims and set up the Deary two daughters, Gwendolyn Town site Company to sell land and Dorothy. Originally Genesee was a village that grew up about a mile east of the present town beginning in 1872. When in 1888 the Spokane & Palouse Railway was extended to Genesee, the owner of the town site, Jacob Rosenstein, asked what was considered an exorbitant price for rightof-way and grounds. As a consequence the railway built its terminus a mile west of the village, and the original town was forced to move to the present location. After the village moved, Genesee experienced a period of rapid growth. In the heart of some of the most productive farming land in the county, it became a trade and supply center for a fairly large area. By the time the railroad tracks reached Lewiston in 1898, Genesee had been the end of the line for ten years and was an important shipping point to which cattle and hogs were driven from as far away as Cottonwood and Grangeville. Hay and grain warehouses sprang up alongside the tracks, and business boomed on the main street. In the early 1900’s fruit was an important product, and apples were shipped out by the carload. Visitors to Genesee can enjoy the historic buildings downtown, take a country drive
to admire the beautiful rolling hills of wheat, barley, garbanzo beans, peas and lentils, or shop at the local antique store. Another great adventure is to visit the National Historic Site, White Springs Ranch. Take a trip back in time and see the circa 1876 log cabin and the 18841904 farm home. Call (208) 416-1006 for more information. Genesee Community Day, the first Saturday of June, draws visitors from all over. A great day for families to enjoy the car show, basketball tournament, quilt show, or warm up your running shoes for the Cow Creek Run. For more information visit www.genesee civicassoc.org. Juliaetta, Idaho In 1878 Rupert Schupfer homesteaded the land where Juliaetta is located. For a short time the town was known as Schupfer or Schupferville. When the post office was established in 1882, the first postmaster, Charles Snyder, renamed the town after his two daughters, Julia and Etta. In the 1890’s a tramway was installed and warehouses erected for the grain raised on the ridges above Juliaetta. It was powered by a steam engine and consisted of a track on which sled-like cars operated. Eventually seven wagon roads led to Juliaetta,

Kendrick, Idaho Thomas Kirby founded Kendrick in 1889. He named it Latah and became its first postmaster. In order to assure the Northern Pacific Railroad’s building to the town, Kirby gave it a deed to half the town site. In 1891 it was renamed for James Kendrick, Northern Pacific’s chief engineer at the time. Situated in the midst of fertile country suited to growing both fruit and grains, with water power available from the Potlatch River, a timber supply not far distant, and mining activity developing in the Ruby Creek and Boulder Creek districts, Kendrick quickly developed as a trading center. In the early 1890s the town had a flour mill, lumber mill, and an electric power plant. Kendrick’s rich history can still be enjoyed today. Visitors can admire many of the historic 1904 buildings on main street, tour the Bethany and Leland Churches, pull over to investigate the basalt columns that many university students travel to see, go for a swim at the local pool on a hot summer day, or shop at one of the many antique shops downtown. Visitors can also stroll or bike the Ed Corkill Trial that connects Kendrick
and Juliaetta, with historical markers of railroad history. Kendrick also welcomes visitors from all over the country to their annual Locust Blossom Festival, which is held the last Saturday of May. Onaway, Idaho Nestled in the rolling hills of the Palouse, Onaway is a fun small town to make a stop in! The name sources from the mill workers at Potlatch who would stop at the bars after work. When a wife called and asked where her husband was she would be told he was “Onaway” home. When taking a driving tour of the area, make sure and

Potlatch, Idaho In 1903 the Potlatch Lumber Company, organized by the Weyerhauser interests, purchased the mill and timber lands of the Palouse River Lumber Company. Instead of building a major mill at Palouse, as local people expected, the company built a new mill, a company town, and a railroad. In 1905 construction began on what was then the largest white pine sawmill in the world. Potlatch built homes, commercial buildings, schools, churches, a post office, and an opera house. Nothing was privately owned until 1952 when the company sold the town, giving residents first option to buy their houses. It donated the library, fire hall and truck, church lots, and other public facilities to the town. The mill operated until 1981 and was dismantled in 1983. The spectacular scenery surrounding Potlatch consists of deep pine forests and grassy meadows, clear rivers and babbling mountain streams, providing year-round recreational opportunities. Potlatch provides excellent accommodations for hunting, fishing, camping, and other recreational activities. Contact the City of Potlatch at (208) 8750708 for more information. Portions of

Troy was originally known as Huff’s Gulch. In 1890 John P. Vollmer was instrumental in extending the Spokane & Palouse Railway (later the Northern Pacific) to Huff’s Gulch from Moscow as a start toward completion of its line to Lewiston. After establishing a general merchandise store and a large livery stable, he had the town renamed after himself. It was incorporated as Vollmer in 1892. As a businessman Vollmer was very successful, amassing large land holdings and great wealth. But in 1897 the citizens rebelled against having their village named after a man who owned more than 32,000 acres of land, much of it gained by foreclosing on bank loans to farmers. A Greek railroad worker suggested “Troy,” the name of “the most illustrious city in the world” and backed it with an offer of a drink of whiskey for everyone who would vote to change the name. “Troy” received 29 votes; “Vollmer”, 9. In the early 1900’s, Troy had a bank, a flour mill, a general store, two meat markets, three saloons, several sawmills, one dentist, and a weekly newspaper. Today the community of

Whitman County Colfax, Washington Located in the heart of the ”Palouse”, Colfax serves as the county seat and is home to almost 3000 residents who enjoy working, playing and raising their families in a community that is alive with small town friendliness. Colfax was named in honor of Schuyler Colfax, who was vice president during President U.S. Grant’s first administration (1869-73). James A Perkins was cofounder and first permanent resident of Colfax. Shortly after his arrival in 1870, he began building a log cabin in which the first Republican convention in the county was held in 1872. By 1884, the Perkins family built a beautiful Victorian style home that still stands today and is an important historical landmark. The Whitman County Historical Society has refurbished the turn-of-thecentury mansion which is open Thursday and Sunday from 1-4pm, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Call the Colfax Chamber of Commerce at (509) 397-3712 for further information. On the last Sunday in June each year an old-fashioned ice cream social is held on the lawn of the Perkins House. Located on Perkins Ave. Concrete River Days, a summer festival filled with sidewalk sales, a parade and a 5K Color Run, is held the last weekend in July. History comes alive with the Palouse Empire Threshing Bee, September, where antique horse drawn farming equipment parades through downtown and allows you to watch early harvesting methods from the turn of the century. Colfax plays host to the Palouse Empire Fair, in September 5-8, where you can enjoy great fair food, wild rodeos, livestock competitions and more. Each year on the first weekend in October the Colfax Chamber sponsors the Autumn Harvest Hullabaloo. This juried event includes artisans, antique appraisers, live bands, a beer garden, food court, kids activities and much more. On the first Thursday in December at 6pm on Mill St, the Chamber puts on the Lighted Christmas Parade with local businesses and churches participating. The grand finale includes the arrival of Santa plus a fireworks display. The Colfax Library offers free Wi-Fi internet, public computing, educational

programs and the very best in books, music and movies. The Children’s area features a towering Banyan tree that anchors this rainforest themed corner. For the outdoor enthusiast, activities are plentiful. A beautiful 9-hole golf course situated along the Palouse River is open to the public seven days a week. Colfax has four parks to enjoy. Schmuck Park is the largest with a covered shelter, cooking units, playground, swimming pool, tennis courts and skateboard park. For more information go to visitcolfax.com
Colton, Washington The Colton story began in 1879 when L. J. Wolford, Roy Woodworth and Dr. Cole, being dissatisfied with the proprietor of Uniontown, decided to found a town of their own. They acquired the property from Gregory Koshier and the town was platted that year. The name came from the first three letters of Dr. Cole’s last name and the last three letters of Mr. Wolford’s son, Clinton. That same year the Steptoe Canyon road was built. The main road at that time was from Pullman through Johnson which made the Steptoe Canyon road the best route to the river grain terminals through Colton insuring early success of local businesses. The present highway (SR195) was completed in the early ‘30’s. In 1881 the city government was formed with a mayor, three councilmen and a town

The museum also houses a great deal of Palouse’s local history in photos and artifacts. Palouse also has one of the oldest and most beautiful city parks in the area with covered picnic structures, play areas, and a seasonal outdoor
Originally settled by German immigrants from Minnesota in the 1870’s Uniontown is the south gateway to the Palouse Scenic Byway and offers unique small town experiences for those who stop. This German heritage is celebrated every year with the annual German Sausage Feed held the 1st Sunday each March since 1952. Uniontown is known on the Palouse for its volunteer forces and the ability to get the job done several historic buildings have been restored and are in use today. St. Boniface Church, built in 1905, was the first consecrated Catholic church in the state of Washington and stands today in its original splendor. It houses the original five alters, statues, stained glass windows, stenciled painted décor and oil painted Stations of the Cross. Tours are available. When the Dahmen Barn was donated to the community in 2004, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and donated over 5000 donated hours to transform the building into the state-of-theart artisan center it is today. Located behind a famous fence of more than 1000 iron wheels this fully accessible facility provides studio space for artist to work and sell their creations. They also host local

Four big events are held each year: a demonstration day in April, a summer tea, a fall festival in September and a Holiday Gala with gifts galore in December. Open Thursday through Sunday from 10am-tpm with early closure at 4pm in January and February. No daily admission fee. Pick up some coffee and fresh baked goodies at the Sage Baking Company, housed in the historic Palm, originally a brewery and opera house. Enjoy lunch at the Uniontown Deli and see if you can polish off the 22 inch hot dog! Or get a taste of the past with an old fashioned sundae at the Green Parrot Ice Cream Parlor. Sample some wine at the Vineyard Vault. They offer tastings of wine from around Washington State, including some hard to find varieties. A great stop for treasure hunting with half a dozen antique and second hand shops. And you won’t want to miss the annual Flea Market and Community Yard Sale the 3rd Saturday in August. Located on Hwy 195 16 miles south of Pullman and 16 miles southwest of Moscow. More history, details about businesses, services and events may be found at uniontown.us
