Wedding themes can set the mood Rustic Weddings The phrase “rustic wedding” is buzzing in the wedding industry, as brides combine a modern and old-style mix into their special days. But what exactly does the term signify? Rustic means vintage and can span all aspects of your wedding: dress, tuxedo, venue, food, photography and more. Decor: You can weave the details of your theme into your reception. Tie in the color of your gown with the tablecloths or include a strand of lace on the table markers. Going with a bouquet mix of subtly colored tulips. Display vases with tulips as centerpieces on some of your tables.

Details: A strategically designed suite of save-the-dates, invitations and place cards. Strings of glowing lanterns strewn from the border of your reception pavilion. Sepia-toned photographs of your wedding party that seemingly place your wedding back in the 1950s. All of these items have one thing in common – they scream rustic. Pulling these details into one event can help beautifully convey your vintage theme.

Winter Weddings You wouldn’t don a snowflake-themed wedding dress in August, so why would you wear a pastel-colored one in December? Planning an amazing winter wedding means embracing the

season and all of the opportunities for unique design. From the overall theme, color scheme, food menu and drink offerings, your wedding can be a top-tier representation of the wintertime. Decor: Snowflake cutouts hanging randomly from your reception hall’s ceiling form a subtle nod to the wintertime. Red ribbons aren’t limited to presents. They can be a beautiful piece to add to shoes, bouquets or table settings. Think of creative ways to incorporate them, such as the outfits of your flower girl or ring bearer. Frosted branches are always a refreshing addition to a wedding design theme. The use of frosted branches in centerpieces or table accents can provide some sparkle. Details: A versatile symbol of winter — the snowflake can serve as the perfect decoration adorning your invitations. Red Barn Farms Weddings Spiked hot chocolate or eggnog can make for a winterthemed cocktail that your guests will appreciate on a cold, wintry day. You also could opt for non-alcoholic versions of of the holiday season — and ones that you should consider incorporating into your winter wedding. Even if your event isn’t taking the wintertime favorites or select an assortment of unique place in late December, you can find ways to creatively honor coffees from which your guests can choose. Let the holidays inholiday traditions or symbols into your winter wedding. spire you. Jingle bells, holly and mistletoe are traditional markers

Choices Abound Hiring the Perfect Vendors The options can be overwhelming. From DJs and flower shops, to caterers and photographers, it takes a lot to coordinate the long list of services to ensure your wedding goes off without a hitch. And finding WayBack Cafe & the right fits will Catering require more than simply choosing a few names out of a phone book. Consider the vendor selection process as a business decision. After all, you are paying these companies a lot of money for their services. Their performance must be great not only on the day of your wedding, but also in the months and weeks leading up to it.

As with any business decision, due diligence is key to making a smart investment. And that’s exactly what your vendor is.

So, before handing over a deposit check to your wedding DJ or venue, do a little research on the front end. Interview several wedding vendors in all key categories — food, drinks, photos, music, venue and even planning if you are planning to work with a consultant. Have key questions ready for your interviews and take notes throughout the process on the pros and cons of each service. Then work with your fiance to go through the notes and choose the perfect fit for your needs.

Be Realistic

work with whatever special request you may have. But be realistic — and nice. Just because you are paying a vendor doesn’t mean they deserve to be treated like an underappreciated employee. We’ve all seen the TV shows depicting some brides-to-be as highly stressed, extremely moody and downright mean. Don’t be a “bridezilla.” Communicate often with your vendors to make sure they are on track with your goals and treat them as a business partner working side-by-side with you to create the most memorable day of your life.

Vendors realize this is your wedding and are usually willing to

Planning A Winter Wonderland Wedding So you want to plan a winter wedding? Say hello to your new best (or worst) friend — Mother Nature. Weather will likely dictate your wedding goes off without a hitch, so it is important to understand the risk involved with your decision.

Be Prepared! There isn’t much you can do to overcome 2 feet of snow or a dangerous ice storm. Planning a great winter wedding will come down to the details that are actually in your control, such as wardrobe, transportation for

guests and a winter-inspired theme. Also, you should be emotionally prepared for some guests who will not be willing to take on the risk of driving or flying through winter conditions to make your event. The elderly or friends with young children may be worried about potentially dangerous road conditions. As long as you can appreciate the needs of these guests — even on your special day — you will remain in positive wedding spirits.

Wedding Insurance

With your wedding at the mercy of wintery conditions, you may consider wedding insurance to protect some of your investment. Many policies will safeguard you from losing your deposit money to a weatherrelated cancellation. In this case, you could use the refunded money to 6DWXUGD\ -DQXDU\ WK hire a new vendor DP SP for a make-up date 1H] 3HUFH &RXQW\ )DLU 3DYLOLRQ if any of your original vendors can’t fit ZZZ OHZLVWRQFODUNVWRQEULGDOIDLU FRP it into their schedules. statistics reveals a slow trend away from the hot summer air and into the majestic winter chill. Winter weddings definitely still represent the minority of weddings in the United States (7 percent in 2013, according to XO Group Inc.), but are on the rise. That number is up from 5 percent in 2012. Some of the upward trend can be contributed to a downward one in summer weddings. The XO Group Inc. reports 35 percent of couples opted for sunshine-filled nuptials in 2013, down from 41 percent in 2009.

The Reasons The two primary factors driving the increase in winter wonderland weddings are beauty and cost. Breathtaking photographs and the ability to infuse a unique wardrobe scheme into the wedding are attracting many brides to the winter event. Cost also is a key contributor to the decision, as many venues will charge less for “off-season” events in an effort to drive revenue during the slower business months. And it is a trend many in the wedding industry expect to continue.

“eye-clean” diamond, whose tiny specks are visible only under a microscope. Carat Weight: All gems are weighed in metric carats and each carat is composed of 100 points. So a 50-point diamond weighs .5 carats, a 75-point stone is .75 carats, and so on. That said, carat refers to weight, not size. Translation? How large a stone looks isn’t always representative of how much it weighs.

Shopping Smarts Follow these tips for browsing — and buying — wisely. In-Store: Everything in life is negotiable, and that includes fine jewelry, says gemologist Gillian Griffiths, owner of the Etsy shop Gold Adore. “Ask for a discount. It won’t always work, but it doesn’t hurt to try.” Online: How can you tell if a website is the real deal? “Credible shops have a traceable history,” says Griffiths. Read reviews, reach out to previous buyers and ask the seller lots of questions. A legit site should make the four C information available for every diamond it sells, so an understanding of basic gemology, plus a rock-solid return policy, is all you need. Vintage: Antique jewelry is everywhere, from flea markets to eBay, but unless you buy from established dealers, “You’ll have no way

of knowing what’s authentic,” says Griffiths. Plus, most old rings were made before the days of certification; make sure the seller accepts returns, then have the stone appraised independently. Custom: The most personalized option is hiring a jeweler or goldsmith to create a ring from scratch, which typically takes about a month. There will be a small design fee, but a good pro should be willing to work within any budget.

Pick Your Metal Without a band, a diamond is just a diamond. With one, it’s a ring. Whether gold, platinum or something else entirely, consider your options before you commit. Gold: Naturally, gold is yellow, but jewelers can mix in other metals to create new shades. “White gold, for example, is yellow gold with nickel or palladium, while rose gold is yellow gold and copper,” says Griffiths. All three options are classic and durable, which is why they’re such timeless choices for engagement rings.

Platinum: This metal is considerably more expensive than gold, and for good reason. “Not only is it rarer, but it’s also heavier than gold, which makes it harder for jewelers to work with,” says Griffiths. The most durable metal used in fine jewelry, it’s also resistant to wear and tarnish. Add the allure of its silver-white color and you can see why platinum continues to be a popular pick. “Even white gold will look a little warmer in tone, so if a true silvery shade is what you’re after, platinum is for you,” she says, adding that along with yellow gold, platinum is better for sensitive skin. “They’re both hypoallergenic, whereas the alloys used in white and rose gold are not.”

A: It’s the larger, more dramatic elements, such as a huge urn of flowers as guests arrive or a wonderfully decorated dance floor, that create the real effect at a party. Q: Do you have any rules of thumb for bridal bouquets? A: I always ask the bride what sort of handbag she would choose to complement her dress. The answer is usually a small clutch, so I rarely do huge bouquets. A bouquet needs to feel light and comfortable. Before settling on a primary photographer, it is wise to interview photographers to ask about their backgrounds. Have they shot outdoor weddings before? What about winter weddings? Can they show a portfolio of their past work? What are a couple of ideas for really unique shots that you can expect? Advice for engaged couples: Before you start planning your big day By Eleni N. Gage

Planning A Too-long Party

It’s the event of your lifetime, but it shouldn’t feel like it lasted a lifetime. “It’s tempting to get so excited that you map out a marathon celebration, with pre-vow drinks, Making Plans Before a lengthy ceremony, another cocktail hour, a Setting A Budget multicourse dinner, three hours of dancing, Picking a dress or wedding venue before an after-party and more” says planner Calder establishing financial parameters is a lot like Clark, owner of Calder Clark in Charleston, shopping without glancing at price tags and South Carolina. “But industry insiders agree then strolling up to check out with your fingers that a five-hour reception is the tiptop of what crossed. Underestimating the cost of outdoor affairs Just because the setting may be breezy doesn’t mean the planning is going to be easy. “With alfresco affairs, people think we’re just putting a tent in a field, and it’s going to be beautiful,” Hamilton says. “They don’t realize

No one likes feeling confused, and your guests won’t know the wedding locale the way you do. Offer suggestions of things to do and information on getting around, “and if you’re having a destination event or weekendlong celebration, hand out itineraries telling everyone where they need to be and when,” Hamilton says. “That way, the buses won’t be

late to the vows because no one knew when or where they needed to be picked up.” Speaking of buses, give the drivers their fair share of need-to-know information too. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told a transportation company what the address is, and they still get lost,” Hamilton adds. “Now we print out directions describing exactly the way we want them to go so we can estimate how long it will take to move guests from place to place.”

Micromanaging Drawing a map for the bus drivers is a great idea. Plotting out bathroom breaks and a second-by-second schedule for your coordinator, wait staff and DJ? Not so much. “Folks forget they’re dealing with seasoned professionals who can forecast - down to the nanosecond — how the party should go,” says Clark. “Be clear about what you want, but know that offering trust and creative license to your team produces a better end result for all involved.”

Skipping Video Yes, the movie version of your big day will go months or even years between viewings, and videography is a tempting place to cut costs. However, “Nothing compares to being able to relive your wedding in real time; it goes by in a flash,” says Easton. “Our clients always call us to gush over the details the next day, and it’s hard to hear when their only regret is not having hired a videographer.”

Sweating The Small Stuff Your brother may forget to bring the programs you spent last weekend hand-stamping, your mom may insist on leading a conga line at the reception, and your father-in-law may call your boss “honey” when they’re introduced. But who cares? You’re marrying the love of your life! “Too often we see couples get so wrapped up in the details that the focus shifts from the celebration of a marriage to a fixation on the ’stuff’ of a wedding,” say Maria Baer and Kelly Seizert, co-owners of Ritzy Bee Events in Washington, D.C. “It’s hard to have fun and be present in this once-in-a-lifetime moment if you’re worried the peonies in the centerpieces are one Pantone shade off.”
