Campus choir director wins Grammy; alum also honored

Bienen Prof. Donald Nally, Northwestern’s director of choral organizations, received his first Grammy win Sunday for his choir’s performance of Gavin Bryars’ “The Fifth Century,” a collaboration between his chamber choir The Crossing and chamber ensemble PRISM Quartet. Nally won over four other choral groups in the best choral performance category. This is his second Grammy nomination in two years. Last year, Nally was nominated in the same category for The Crossing’s performance of Thomas Lloyd’s “Bonhoeffer,” but lost to Krzysztof Penderecki’s “Penderecki Conducts Penderecki, Volume 1.” “The Fifth Century,” commissioned by Nally in 2013 and composed by Bryars, is a series of movements based on theologian Thomas Traherne’s writings about eternity, Nally said.

the edge of a parking garage in downtown Evanston for several hours, police said. The incident shut down streets in parts of downtown Evanston and was resolved shortly before 4 p.m., EPD Cmdr. Ryan Glew said.

Though he didn’t attend the ceremony, Nally told The Daily he was “thrilled” by the result and spent the next hour calling and emailing people involved in “The Fifth Century” who played a role in its formation. Most importantly, Nally said, he is grateful that the award will raise more awareness for The Crossing and its musical pursuits. “It doesn’t affect (The Crossing’s) mission at all, it just probably affects our ability to put that mission into play because it does attract attention and puts you on an even bigger national stage,” Nally said. “The excitement for me is having a greater reach for pieces that I really believe in.” In addition to Nally, Nashville Symphony Orchestra music director Giancarlo Guerrero (Bienen ’92) also received a Grammy for his direction of Jennifer Higdon’s “All Things Majestic.” Guerrero won for best classical compendium. Both awards were announced Sunday afternoon before the televised 60th Grammy Awards ceremony, hosted at Madison Square Garden in New York City. — Madeleine Fernando

Earlier in the day, EPD received a call from the Glenview Police Department that there was a woman who they feared was a danger to herself and whose cell phone had been tracked to the 1600 block of Orrington Avenue in

downtown Evanston, Glew said. He said police, off of a “hunch,” checked security cameras and spotted the woman at the top of the parking garage located across from the CTA » See INCIDENT, page 6

Northwestern alumnus Michael Brennan (School of Law ’89) faced a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday after being nominated for a federal court position by President Donald Trump. Brennan, currently a partner at a Milwaukee law firm, was nominated for an empty seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which covers Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The seat has been vacant since 2010 — though former President Barack Obama nominated Victoria Nourse for the position in July 2010, her hearing was halted by the Republican-headed committee at the time. Some committee members

highlighted Brennan’s extensive experience as a lawyer and his “exemplary resume” — including his NU Law degree. “Mr. Brennan comes to the committee today with bipartisan support and an impressive legal career, including experience in both the public and private sectors,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the committee’s chairman, during the hearing. Even before the questioning began, though, Brennan’s hearing was fraught with controversy regarding the “blue slip” protocol of the Judiciary Committee. In a century-old protocol, both senators from a nominee’s home state receive blue slips allowing them to express or withhold approval for the nomination. Though not an official rule, the tradition has generally been upheld that if both blue slips are not returned with a positive response, the nominee would not receive a hearing. City manager Wally Bobkiewicz at a meeting. Bobkiewicz said aldermen will discuss affordable housing at Monday’s City Council meeting.

A pilot program to provide financial assistance for landlords to repair and improve low-income rental units will headline the affordable housing discussion at a special City Council meeting on Monday. The program, which would be open to landlords committed to rent to households earning 60 percent of the average median income, would be funded with $200,000 of the currently uncommitted $800,000 in the city’s affordable housing fund, according to city documents.
