The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communication named Tim Franklin, president of the Poynter Institute, as the school’s new senior associate dean, according to a news release. According to the release, Franklin will “focus on partnerships across the school’s four sites” — San Francisco, Washington, Evanston and Chicago — and with Northwestern’s Qatar journalism program. “Tim has a remarkable ability to create partnerships throughout the country and world to focus on crucial topics and training in our field,” Medill Dean Brad Hamm said in the release. “He will have a unique opportunity at Medill for important work across our sites.” Franklin joined Poynter, a nonprofit, Florida-based journalism school and media research center, in 2014. According to the news release, Franklin helped lead the organization to becoming “the international home of fact-checking organizations.” Poynter is known in the journalism community as the source for industryrelated news and is also home to the “world’s largest online
journalism curriculum,” according to the release. As president of the organization, Franklin established partnerships with companies such as Univision, Google, National Geographic, Facebook and the Associated Press, according to the release. Before Poynter, Franklin served as editor of the Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel and the Indianapolis Star. He was also managing editor of Bloomberg News in Washington. Franklin has also worked at Indiana University, where he was the founding director of the National Sports Journalism Center and the Louis A. Weil, Jr., endowed chair in the School of Journalism, according to the release. Joining Medill, Franklin said in the release, “is an incredible opportunity to play a leadership role at one of the premier schools in the world.” “Medill has a renowned legacy of excellence,” he said in the release. “I’m looking forward to working with faculty, staff and students to build on the already inspiring work being done there.” Franklin, whose Chicago ties go back to his career beginnings as a reporter and editor at the Chicago Tribune, said moving back to the city with his family is an exciting opportunity. “For us, this move is returning to an area that we love,” he said in the release. alfaro@u.northwestern.edu

Northwestern students and Evanston residents now have a dessert option in addition to grilled cheese for late-night drunchies — cookies. Insomnia Cookies opened its doors at 1725 Sherman Ave. on Friday. The Evanston location is Insomnia’s sixth location in the Chicago area and caters within a one-mile radius, including the NU campus and the 1st Ward, said Catharine Gatlin, Insomnia’s marketing manager. Gatlin said sales have been going well at the new location and that “word is starting to get around” the NU student body. She said most of the customers so far have been students, but some families and other Evanston residents have stopped by to purchase cookies. “It will definitely help that we are surrounded by a lot of other great restaurants and spots that the students are

Rapper D.R.A.M. will be the daytime headliner for Dillo Day, Mayfest announced Monday. D.R.A.M., stage name for Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith, is known for his songs “Broccoli” and “Cha Cha.” “Broccoli” peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in November 2015. McCormick senior Rovik Robert, a member of Mayfest’s concerts committee, said the group was considering various hip-hop artists but decided on D.R.A.M. because of his music’s joyful sound. “D.R.A.M. was definitely one of the (artists) who stood out because of the vibe he
brings,” Robert said. “He’s a very feel good, summer vibe; that’s really the kind of atmosphere we’re trying to create.” As the daytime headliner, D.R.A.M.’s performance will be able to keep the energy high on the Lakefill, Robert said. D.R.A.M. will be joined by DJ Daf and a full band, he said. The Dillo Day lineup was arranged to ensure that the “energy builds up all the way to the evening,” Robert said. Last week, Mayfest announced that Grammy-nominated alternative rock group MGMT will perform as the festival’s headliner. DJ Gramatik has been confirmed as the penultimate act for Dillo Day, and British rapper Little Simz will perform as well. In addition to making Dillo Day an event where students can “de-stress” and have fun, codirector of promotions Justine Yücesan said in a statement that ensuring the concert is a place » See D.R.A.M., page 6
