Tree lighting ceremony to move due to construction

‘Twas the month before Christmas, and all through Evanston, the search was on for the right spot to light the city’s holiday tree.

In past years, the city has held its annual tree lighting at Fountain Square in downtown Evanston.

But in April, the city began construction on the square, which has since experienced multiple delays due to weather and coordination issues. With renovations currently on hiatus because of dropping temperatures — the project is expected to finish in May 2018 — the city had to seek out a new location.

This year’s ceremony will take place Dec. 9 at Church Street Plaza, at the intersection of Church Street and Maple Avenue, said Annie Coakley, executive director of Downtown Evanston — a business nonprofit in charge of orchestrating the tree lighting.

Church Street Plaza, located a few blocks from the original location, has put up its own tree for the past two years, Coakley said. She said this year her organization collaborated with the plaza’s management to take advantage of the space as a new venue for the ceremony.

Lori Stein, director for commercial property management at McCaffery Interests — the real estate company that manages tenants around Church Street Plaza — said the tree was installed about a week and a half ago.

The tree is artificial and stands 18 feet tall, Stein said, noting that it is the same tree that has been used

in recent years. Evanston has historically used real fir trees and plans to plant a permanent tree as part of the Fountain Square renovation, eliminating the need for the city to search for a new tree every year, Ald. Melissa Wynne (3rd) told The Daily in 2016.

“We’re thrilled we can assist while Fountain Square is under renovation,” Stein said. “On behalf of all the

tenants, we look forward to welcoming Evanston on tree lighting night.”

Traditionally, there is a procession through Evanston — with fire trucks, the mayor and an appearance

by Santa Claus — before the tree is lit, but Coakley said the new location will not allow access for a procession. Instead, she said, there will be performances from various choirs and professional carolers.

Coakley said she hopes the carolers will be able to lead attendees in a group rendition of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” — a holiday classic based off a poem written in 1939 by Evanston native Robert L. May. She added that her organization plans to distribute red noses to tree lighting attendees for the occasion.

This year’s ceremony will mark the first time Mayor Steve Hagerty lights the tree, and Coakley said he is expected to make remarks before the tree is illuminated.

Ald. Peter Braithwaite (2nd) said he is happy to host the event in his ward this year but looks forward to returning to Fountain Square in 2018.

“It’s a wonderful citywide event,” Braithwaite said.

Students from various cultures discuss holiday traditions

Instead of traditional Christmas provisions, Weinberg junior Dragon Yu said his dining table is filled with fried rice, festive buns and other Chinese dishes.

There is no Christmas tree, and in place of presents, elders hand out red envelopes containing money for good fortune.

“It’s very interesting how we took red envelopes, which is very much so like (Chinese) New Years, and started giving it in lieu of presents and gifts,” Yu said.

Though his family does not celebrate Christmas in a religious sense, Yu said they make use of the day as an opportunity for family bonding.

Like Yu, many people who do not practice Christianity have found reasons to incorporate their own

culture into the traditionally Christian holiday. Communication junior Cindy Luan said her family began to celebrate the holiday to be more integrated in American culture after emmigrating from China.

“When my parents first moved to America and they had my sister and me, they realized Christmas is a big thing in America,” said Luan, whose family is not religious. “My parents decided to celebrate Christmas … so my sister and I could have more of an American upbringing.”

Now, Luan said she gathers with her ChineseAmerican neighbors for a Chinese-style potluck party.

Christmas has become a day to spend time with family and friends and to eat good food, she said.

Some people have even found ways to take advantage of the Christmas season without observing the holiday itself, like Weinberg junior Afsar Sandozi, who goes on family vacations during the holiday season.

warm weather and spend time with her busy family.

She said she never felt like she was left out of the festivities growing up because as a Muslim, she had her own holidays such as Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

“We get gifts, we get money, we get family time, we have religious services,” she said. “We had our own version of it, so it wasn’t like I was missing out on anything.”

Communication sophomore Hannah Hakim, who is Jewish, said her family often improvises plans on Christmas Day. Like Sandozi, she said her family takes advantage of the one time during the year everyone is available and holds their annual Hanukkah party.

They also go to places that are usually crowded but are very empty on Christmas, such as the movie theater, she said.

Though they might not celebrate Christmas, Hakim said her family still enjoys the festivities of the holiday season.

“We still watch all the Christmas carols online,” she said. “It’s become so Westernized that it’s become more of a cultural thing than a religious thing.”

Sandozi said the transition of Christmas as a strictly religious celebration to more of a cultural phenomenon partially comes from the commercialization of the holiday. Stores extensively advertise sales as chances to get Christmas gifts for loved ones, and most decorations sold during the holiday season are Christmasthemed, she said. Still, anyone can take advantage of holiday bargains regardless of religion, she said.

She added that Christmas also embodies a sense of community, which is why it is so widely celebrated.

“Every religion, every group of people –– regardless of their religion –– needs something that ties them together, pulls them together as family or friends,” she said. “Christmas does that for people.” catherinekim2020@u.northwestern.edu

Ugly sweaters raise money for charity

As the holiday season approaches, out come the troves of ugly holiday sweaters — brightly colored and adorned with every imaginable accessory from bells to lights to pompoms.

Northwestern GlobeMed takes advantage of the ugly sweater trend with its annual ugly sweater sale held at Norris University Center.

The sweater sale is GlobeMed’s most successful annual fundraising event, said Alexus Snowden, the group’s campaigns co-director. The Weinberg junior said the sale raised more than $4,000 this year.

GlobeMed co-president Matthew Dulas said the sweater sale raises money for the Adonai Center, an orphanage and health center in rural Uganda. The center began as an orphanage for children affected by civil unrest and the HIV/AIDS epidemic and has since expanded.

The Weinberg senior said the group has had success with the sale due to the prevalence of ugly sweater parties during the holiday season. He added that NU Ski Trip has an ugly sweater night as part of its programming.

“Everyone needs an ugly sweater, and we’re here to provide them,” Dulas said.

SESP junior Sara Saltzer said she bought a sweater at the GlobeMed sale this year to add to her collection of several other ugly Christmas sweaters.

Saltzer said she only wears her sweaters to holidaythemed events, such as gift exchanges, adding that her a cappella group has a holiday-themed show this year where members will dress in ugly sweaters.

She said all of her sweaters have been “gifted or thrifted.”

Snowden said the group decided to add vintagestyle sweaters to its collection this year.

She added that the group discussed potentially selling different types of clothing, but ultimately

decided to continue selling sweaters because it is easy to find a wide range of styles and sizes, as well as many unisex options.

“We get everything from the really tacky holiday sweaters to more of the plain, wool sweaters, to ones with more of the 90s, 80s looks,” Snowden said. “It is really easy to ... meet the needs and wants of everyone.”

Our favorite things from Oprah’s Favorite Things Yes, Oprah literally put an ancestry test on her Favorite Things List. Enough said.

Listen — we love Oprah Winfrey as much as the next person. If she had a monopoly over the entire media industry, we’d probably be OK with it. With that said, we want to both honor our benevolent queen and poke some fun at the ridiculousness of holiday commercialism by reviewing Oprah’s 2017 Favorite Things List.

From $70 pies to a toothbrush that tracks your brushing motions, there are some definite gems on this year’s list and some items the average Northwestern student may want to leave off their holiday gift list. We’ll try to break down items from both categories: Troy: Mount Mansfield Organic Pure Vermont Maple Syrup ($32) I’m just waiting for someone to bring this to 1835 Hinman dining hall and pretend they’re classy while eating dry French toast. Honestly though, pour this $30 syrup over anything and it turns into a five-star meal.

Alex: Creatista Plus ($599) I dare someone to buy this almost-$600 espresso maker and milk frother and use it in their dorm room. I feel like this goes beyond violating the Evanston fire code and enters a whole new level of excess.

Troy: 23andMe DNA Test ($69)

Alex: Smart Nora Snoring Solution ($299) This egg-shaped device detects snoring and pumps air into a pillow insert to gently adjust the snorer’s head and put an end to the noise.

Perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to make their roommate feel bad by telling them they snore — just trick out their pillow with this device and hope they don’t notice.

Troy: The Cheese Knife ($35) Can you imagine: You’re at Cheesie’s getting ready to dive into your food. But wait.

You pull this cheese knife out your jacket and cut your Tenderizer up into bite-size manageable little triangles before you eat, evoking jealousy among all your friends. Of course you can imagine it, and that’s why this is a MUST-have.

Alex: The Breville Perfect Press ($100) Oprah says in the description of this sandwich press that she gives it to her guests as a party favor. Imagine making the crunchiest, most melty grilled cheese on the same machine that people who have been invited to Oprah’s parties use.

Troy: Gratitude Glass Jar ($45) You can literally keep your emotions bottled up with this gratitude jar. Really though, it’s a nice concept: You write down something you’re grateful for every day, put it in the jar and open it up later. But I feel like NU students would

progressively get more petty as the quarter went on — “It’s week 7 and I’m SO grateful for almost getting hit by a bike on the way to my midterm!”

Alex: Snurk Twin-Size Duvet Sets ($119) These duvets and pillows are printed to make you look like a mermaid, princess, dinosaur and more while you sleep. Not even kidding: I need this. Let me have dreams again.

Troy: BakerStone Original Pizza Oven Box Kit ($150) “Oh wow, Oprah put a pizza oven on her list! That’s so convenient! Guess that means I won’t be spending all my money at Blaze anymore!” … Oh wait, it’s $150. Well Blaze it is, then.

Alex: Bellocq Chai Gift Set ($79) This set of two organic, Indian-inspired teas costs about as much as approximately 530 Burger King chicken nuggets. And yet, I would still pick the 8 ounces of dried leaves. I love tea.

Alex: Gourmia GSI180 Automatic Healthy Frozen Dessert Maker ($50) You put frozen fruit into this machine and it magically turns it into sorbet. Incredible.

What not to ask a Wildcat

How to spend 144 extra hours of break Winter break is almost a week longer this year, which means six extra days to fill. The Daily has come up with the best uses for those 144 hours.

Christmas music on repeat Everyone knows Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is the best Christmas jam to listen to. With 144 hours, you could listen to the song about 2,206 times on repeat, and highly unlikely you’ll get tired of Mariah Carey’s amazing voice.

Travel to Chicago Specifically, visit the Christkindlmarket downtown. Traveling to the market takes about 56 minutes, taking the CTA Purple Line at the Foster Station to the Red Line, stopping at Lake and walking the rest of the way. Potentially, you could make this round trip 154 times.

That’s 154 rounds of German hot chocolate, and who wouldn’t love that?

Watch holiday movies It only takes about 76 minutes to watch the best holiday movie of all time –– “The

Nightmare Before Christmas.”

You could watch the movie about 113 times in a row. If you want more variety, you could fit in about 26 rotations of the iconic “Home Alone” trilogy.

Road trip around the United States Believe it or not, you could take a road trip around the U.S. — hitting 28 major cities and crossing through 34 different states — in only 5 days, 23 hours and 44 minutes. Obviously, you might not have enough time to take in the sights, but you could at least say you did it.

Pet a dog It takes an average of one minute to stop a person walking a dog on the street and pet said dog. The number is made up, but it seriously takes no time to ask someone to pet their dog. Imagine how many dogs you could pet in an extra week of break. Do it. You know you want to, and honestly, you deserve some love from a dog during your break.

6. You’re really pursuing (insert major name)? You know, (insert career name) really don’t make that much money. (We are already painfully aware of this. Please don’t remind us.)

7. Are you still friends with so-andso? (If we don’t talk about this person, there’s probably a reason.)

8. Have you been exercising? (No, SPAC is like 20 minutes away and I am a lazy piece of garbage.)

9. Who are you living with next year? Where are you living next year?

How much is the rent? (Next year?

I don’t even know what I’m doing tomorrow…)

10. What are you doing this summer? Do you have any internships lined up? (The pile of rejection emails in my inbox can answer that one for you.)

Highs, lows of holiday covers

Decorations have been out at Target for weeks and the lights are finally on some of the campus trees — which means it’s time to break out the holiday tunes. The Daily compiled the best celebrity renditions of holiday songs to include on your playlist, and the ones that will make you want to change the radio station.

We all know Beyoncé is a queen, and her reign continues with her cover of “Ave Maria.”

A Christmas classic, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You” has us asking Santa for pipes like hers.

Missing the old Kanye? His “Christmas in Harlem” is sure to make you

nostalgic for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”

Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” provides the perfect anthem to break it down while baking holiday cookies.

Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” has four parts, each one more funakah than the next. You’ll be bumping this jam for eight crazy nights.

Winter is incomplete without a “Frozen” song, and “Let It Go” is the perfect ballad to belt to your parents after receiving final grades. The curve never bothered me anyway.

Holiday Jeers: Her hips don’t lie and neither do we when we say Shakira should stick to her own songs — just check out her cover of “Santa Baby.”

All we want for Christmas is for this Shania Twain and Nick Jonas collaboration, “Say All You Want for Christmas,” not to exist. Bring back the Jonas Brothers and “Year 3000.”

As cool as Lady Gaga would look as a tree topper, her song “Christmas Tree” misses the mark. Too much innuendo on this holiday tune.

Britney Spears’ “My Only Wish (This Year)” sure is toxic.

Jessica Simpson’s rendition of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” paints a picture of a smooch not even worth mono study money.

Jewish a cappella group The Maccabeats sing a terrible “Latke Recipe” to the tune of “Shut Up and Dance.”

Created in Evanston, Rudolph the reindeer goes down in history

Seen in claymation movies, picture books and on any Christmas-themed knickknack, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has long been an iconic character for children all over the world. But few know where Rudolph really came from.

The most famous reindeer of all actually got its start in Evanston, according to newspaper clippings archived at Evanston Public Library. Rudolph was born in 1939 when Robert L. May — an Evanston native and copywriter for Montgomery Ward, a department store — was asked to write a children’s book to be given away in Ward stores.

According to the clippings, May wanted his book to feature an animal that was closely linked to Santa Claus and underwent an ugly duckling transformation. From this he came up with the idea of a reindeer with a sparkly red nose.

When Rudolph debuted in a rhyming book that Christmas, the store distributed 2.4 million copies, the clippings said. The story was reprinted after World War II and sold another 3.6 million copies.

After Sewell Avery, then-CEO of Montgomery Ward, returned the copyright to May, he brought his story to Harry Elbaum of Maxton Publishers, the documents said. The company published 100,000 copies of Rudolph’s story in 1947, making the story Elbaum’s best seller. With bids coming from numerous publishers, May quit his job and opened an office at 1618 Orrington Ave. to concentrate on Rudolph-related projects, according to the clippings.

Rudolph’s influence reached its peak when Johnny Marks wrote the song “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer,” which topped the charts during Christmas 1949.

According to the clippings, May died in August 1976 in Evanston Hospital. He was 71. Rudolph, however, has lived on to spread holiday cheer to all those listening for the sound of clicking hooves on Christmas Eve. — Adrian Wan

NU’s bowl destination still undecided

Northwestern’s regular season is over, but the team and its fans will have to wait another week before finding out exactly where the Wildcats will be playing postseason football.

The nationwide slate of bowl games for 2017-18 will be announced after the culmination of Saturday’s conference championship games. In the Big Ten, a Wisconsin championship would send the Badgers to the four-team College Football Playoff, while an Ohio State championship could possibly deny the Big Ten a playoff representative — a result that would have ramifications all the way down to NU. Bowl games used to choose teams from each conference in a predetermined order, but that concrete process has been replaced by a more dynamic one, athletic director Jim Phillips told The Daily earlier this month. Now, teams are selected by bowls based on a variety of factors, including how recently a team last played in a particular bowl.

If the Big Ten gets three teams (Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State) into the Playoff and the other so-called New Year’s Six bowls, which is the most likely outcome, then NU (9-3, 7-2 Big Ten) and Michigan State (9-3, 7-2) will probably, in some order, be the next two teams selected from the conference.

The Cats won the head-to-head meeting between the two schools, but Michigan State has the most impressive win of the two (beating Penn State on Nov. 4) and a larger fanbase, which would better fill a bowl venue. Thus, which school would be selected first is unclear.

Uncertainty lingers about which bowls will be choosing between the two teams, as well.

The Citrus Bowl ( Jan. 1 in Orlando) has the first priority selection after the New Year’s Six bowls, but it can also pick Notre Dame instead of a Big Ten team, which is not unlikely. If the Citrus Bowl picks a Big Ten team, and picks the Cats over Michigan State, NU would play an SEC team — most likely South Carolina, LSU or Mississippi State.

The Outback Bowl ( Jan. 1 in Tampa, Florida) and the Holiday Bowl (Dec. 28 in San Diego) are one step below the Citrus Bowl in prestige.

The Outback Bowl is required to select at least five different Big Ten teams over a sixyear period, so the fact that NU played there in 2015 makes it an improbable, though not impossible, choice. This is probably Michigan State’s most likely destination. In the event that the Cats are Tampa-bound again, they’ll probably play one of the SEC teams listed above.

The Holiday Bowl seems like NU’s most likely destination, although “likely” is used liberally here. This bowl will pit a Big Ten team against an elite Pac-12 opponent, presumably either Washington or the loser of the USCStanford conference championship.

If the Cats slip past the Citrus, Outback and Holiday, they could end up in the Music City Bowl (Dec. 29 in Nashville) or the TaxSlayer Bowl (Dec. 30 in Jacksonville, Florida), one of which will pick a Big Ten team to play an SEC team.

National sports sites are highly divided on their projections for NU: Sports Illustrated and SB Nation foresee the Holiday, CBS and ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura predict the Citrus, Sporting News forecasts the Outback and ESPN’s David Hale anticipates the Music City.

The many projections will be made irrelevant and non-refundable plane tickets will become bookable, however, when the Cats find out their real fate next week. benjaminpope2019@u.northwestern.edu

Cats dominate Fighting Illini 42-7 in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — As a freshman in 2014, Justin Jackson experienced a season-ending loss to Illinois that kept Northwestern out of a bowl.

Three seasons and three decisive wins in the rivalry series later, the Wildcats’ senior running back had the final word after an authoritative 42-7 victory Saturday in Champaign.

“I’m glad we can go out beating them like that,” Jackson said. “They’re a team that (is) going to try and talk trash, whatever, even if they’re down by 40. … We go out there and do our job, win big and get out of here.”

Jackson’s 144 yards and another dominant defensive performance helped No. 22 NU (9-3, 7-2 Big Ten) pull away after a tight first half to win its seventh consecutive game overall and retain the Land of Lincoln Trophy for another year.

Offensively, the Cats rolled up 306 yards on the ground with Jackson, redshirt freshman running backs Jeremy Larkin and Jesse Brown, and senior receiver Jelani Roberts all the finding the end zone. After the game, coach Pat Fitzgerald

credited strong offensive-line play for his team’s rushing success against a defense that predominantly plays man-to-man defense.

The Fighting Illini (2-10, 0-9) and their freshman quarterback, Cam Thomas, marched to a touchdown on their first possession of the game, but could not find any rhythm after the score.

NU’s defense allowed just 170 yards the remainder of the game.

“We went off to the sideline (after the first drive) and got some stuff figured out, and just tried calming everyone down,” said redshirt freshman linebacker Paddy Fisher, who made his first career interception later on. “Everyone was freaking out a little bit, and no one had anything to freak out about. I knew the outcome of this game was going to happen.”

In the second quarter, junior quarterback Clayton Thorson — who finished 13-of-21 for 140 yards passing — found senior superback Garrett Dickerson for a game-tying touchdown and then sophomore receiver Ben Skowronek for a 52-yard bomb that set up a go-ahead touchdown. The Cats took that 14-7 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The game quickly devolved from competitive to lopsided in the second half.

Five minutes after the break, NU stretched the

lead to two scores with its first defensive touchdown of the season — a sack and forced fumble by sophomore end Joe Gaziano that led to a scoopand-score by freshman end Sam Miller.

“I didn’t know the ball even came out,” Gaziano said. “Then I saw Sam run in front of me with the ball and I said, ‘Oh shoot, I’ve got to go make a block for him!’”

Jackson broke free for a career-long 79-yard run on the Cats’ ensuing offensive series, and then punched it in on the next play to extend his team’s advantage to 28-7 and essentially put the game away.

Chippy play took over as the score grew further out of hand, with numerous personal fouls committed by both teams and one Illinois player ejected for throwing a flag at a referee. The vast majority of the announced crowd of 30,456 — a seemingly generous estimate to begin with — left Memorial Stadium long before the final whistle.

“We knew we were going to get a pretty big flurry from them early,” Fitzgerald said. “We weathered that, and then when we settled down and started to play our style of ball, 42 unanswered is a statement.” benjaminpope2019@u.northwestern.edu
