Letter from the editors

Nathan Richards/Daily Senior Staffer

It’s 2:13 a.m. We’re sitting on the third floor of Norris half-laughing, half-crying. Who are we to represent the graduating class with a send-off letter? Also, why are we still awake on the Sunday after finals week, when everyone else has gone home to get some much-deserved sleep and Norris has been shut down for hours? (Maybe because we’re still, at least for a few more days, Northwestern students, and staying up all night to finish something is just part of our DNA.) All we did for four years was write the headlines you made. At the end of the day,

this letter isn’t about us, it’s about you, class of 2015. When putting together the final issue of The Daily Northwestern, it’s hard not to think about everything everyone else has done. As editors of a college publication, we had the unique perspective of watching our peers have everyday experiences, trying to understand what and why things happen. You’ve been forming new student groups, conducting research, holding work-study jobs and juggling internships, questioning why it’s all so necessary. On paper, the Northwestern narrative is

THE DAILY, 9/19/11

usually the same. High-achieving students, freezing winters, a rock that’s guarded for 24 hours. But beyond these picturesque hallmarks, the memory of our four years may be more strongly marked by what has started to change, how you’ve worked to improve the everyday experiences of students. In four years, this class has started to change the narrative. You’ve marched to demand support for survivors of sexual assault. You’ve called out racism on campus. You’ve petitioned the University for responsible investment practices. You’ve coped with loss. You’ve demanded better mental health resources. You’ve fought these and many other battles in hopes of reshaping what the Northwestern community can and should be. You didn’t do this alone. Some of these journeys were started by those before us, and they will be continued long after we’re gone. We wrote this letter together because we’ve recognized that just as this, our final issue of The Daily, isn’t just about one person, neither is the Northwestern experience. And neither is our commencement. For four years, in these pages, we’ve tried to capture your experiences leading up to our last days as students. We could not have done that without a diverse, passionate, evolving community that always gave us a new story to tell. For the class of 2015, it’s time to commence. We won’t be writing your headlines in these pages in the same way, but you’ll be continuing the work you started here. And we’ll still be following your stories.

10 THINGS ABOUT VIRGINIA ROMETTY Daily file photo by Sean Su

By ANNIE BRUCE

daily senior staffer @anniefb13

Virginia (Ginni) Rometty (McCormick ’79) is the chairman and chief executive officer of IBM. She will be addressing the Class of 2015 at NU’s 157th commencement ceremony. Here are 10 facts about Rometty to get you ready for Friday’s address. 1. Rometty was the first woman to be named chief executive of IBM. She took on the role in 2012, after working at the company since 1981. 2. Rometty graduated NU with a Bachelor of Science degree, with high honors, in computer science and electrical engineering. When Rometty attended NU, the school’s only academic computer was housed in a separate building because of its size, and students used punch cards to program the machine. 3. While at NU, Rometty served as the president of Kappa Kappa Gamma. 4. Rometty grew up in Chicago with

her three younger siblings. According to the Financial Times, she learned “there’s no problem that can’t be solved” from her mother, who worked multiple jobs and went to college after getting divorced when Rometty was 15. 5. Rometty attended NU on scholarship from General Motors Co. Prior to starting at IBM, Rometty worked at GM for two years. She also interned at the company while still in college.

Club. 9. A self-proclaimed Starbucks lover, Rometty’s drink of choice is tea. She estimates that she has about 100 different teas at her house. 10. Rometty serves on the Board of

Trustees for NU. She spoke at the McCormick undergraduate convocation in June 2010 and gave the IBM Centennial lecture on campus in March 2011. annebruce2015@u.northwestern.edu

6. Rometty was named one of the world’s most powerful women by Forbes magazine in 2014 and 2015. For the last three years, she’s also been at the top of Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” list. 7. Earlier this year, Rometty was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Becoming a part of the organization, which is made up of more than 2,000 peer-voted members, is one of the most prestigious honors for an engineer. 8. Rometty’s hobbies include scuba diving, which she has done for more than 35 years, and golfing. As a golfer, she was the third woman to be invited to join the Augusta National Golf

FOUR YEARS Obama visits NU, praises Kellogg Oct. 2, 2014

Though President Barack Obama came to Evanston to talk about the economy, he made his visit to Northwestern, the first by a sitting president to the city in 60 years, a historic day for NU when he opened with a “Go Cats!” and reminded the crowd of the time he “popped in via video to kick off Dance Marathon.” “I’d figured this time I’d come in person,” he quipped. A crowd of about 1,000 packed into Cahn Auditorium, including Evanston officials, Illinois lawmakers, members of Congress and a purple-clad contingent of NU students, faculty and administrators. Touting his administration’s health care, educational and economic policies, Obama called Kellogg School of Management students the leaders of the nation’s economic future in a speech peppered with jokes and NU references. Obama geared his remarks toward business students, joking about not having a Master of Business Administration and making repeated and pointed mentions of facts, data and statistics about economic policy throughout his speech, which argued that his administration’s focus on job creation, health care reform, education and clean energy has helped the United States recover from the 2008 recession.

IN REVIEW NU launches ʻWe Willʼ campaign March 14, 2014

Northwestern launched a $3.75 billion capital campaign to support initiatives across the University, including research, renovated facilities and scholarships. Since the campaign launched in March 2014, it has already raised more than $2 billion. In January, Roberta Buffett Elliott (Weinberg ‘54) made a record donation of more than $100 million to the campaign to establish an Institute for Global Studies and support scholarships for international students. NU’s fundraising efforts continue to reshape the look and feel of campus. One of the “We Will” campaign’s goals is to fund major construction projects, including the Music and Communication Building, the planned Lakefront Athletics and Recreation Complex, and the Kellogg Global Hub, a new lakeside building which will house the Kellogg School of Management and Weinberg’s economics department.

A gender-open bathroom on the third floor of Norris University Center opened Winter Quarter 2015, along with one in University Library. A gender-open bathroom on the second floor of Norris opened mid-November. The restrooms, which the University calls “all-gendered bathrooms,” are single-person rooms. Although Norris officials said in July the third floor’s existing male and female multi-stall restrooms would be changed to gender-open bathrooms, due to code compliance issues, the new restrooms are separate.

Student files Title IX lawsuit Feb. 10, 2014

In February 2014, a thenMedill junior filed a Title IX lawsuit against NU, alleging that the school mishandled her case after she reported being sexually assaulted by philosophy Prof. Peter Ludlow. In its response, the school denied wrongdoing. Ludlow has repeatedly denied the student’s allegations through his lawyers. Students protested NU’s sexual assault procedures and Ludlow’s continued employment at the University in two different demonstrations in March 2014. The suit spurred a campus-wide conversation about sexual assault reporting and adjudication processes. Ludlow filed his own Title IX suit against NU in June 2014. Both lawsuits have since been dismissed.

Evanston decriminalizes marijuana

Prentice torn down

City Council voted in November 2011 to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana. The ordinance changed city policy so that those caught with less than 10 grams of cannabis in their possession receive tickets instead of being arrested.

Northwestern began its controversial plan to demolish the old Prentice Women’s Hospital in March 2013, after about two years of debate about whether the building constituted a Chicago landmark. A Chicago commission ultimately denied landmark status. NU broke ground on the new biomedical research center that will replace the hospital in May 2015.

The Keg of Evanston closes April 1, 2013

The Keg of Evanston, a bar ingrained in NU and Evanston lore, permanently closed in Spring Quarter 2013 after 36 years in business. The embattled bar lost its lease after a tumultuous year of legal wrangling with city officials, especially Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl. The watering hole remained open during a drawn-out legal process, but all appeals eventually were dropped as the Keg’s fate became clear.

Mental health ENU added

March 22, 2013

Jan. 10, 2013

After student demand for orientation programming about mental health resources, Northwestern established a new Essential NU beginning in Fall Quarter 2013. Although much of the student demand came to light after the death of a student the year before, NU Active Minds had approached administrators about the addition of a mental-health focused ENU in March 2012.

NU investigates John Evansʼ involvement in Sand Creek

Evanston boy fatally shot

In 2012, members of the Northwestern community founded the Native American and Indigenous Student Alliance in part to raise awareness about NU founder John Evans and his role in the Sand Creek Massacre, the 1864 slaying of more than 100 Cheyenne and Arapaho people. In May 2014, an NU committee reported there was no evidence that Evans was directly involved in planning the massacre but did conclude the University ignored his “significant moral failure” both before and after the massacre.

Dajae Coleman, a 14-year-old Evanston resident, was gunned down in September 2012 when a gunman mistook him for someone else. His death garnered national attention and spurred a city-wide conversation about gun violence that led to Evanston’s first gun buyback and reforms to the Evanston Police Department’s communication strategy with homicide victims’ families.

May 29, 2014

James Foley (Medill ‘08), a freelance journalist, was executed by ISIS in August 2014 after spending almost two years in captivity. The Northwestern community remembered Foley for his passion for reporting from conflict zones and his dedication to sharing stories of how war impacted everyday life. More than 100 people gathered in Alice Millar Chapel for his memorial service in November. Foley was posthumously awarded the Medill Medal of Courage along with Matthieu Aikins, who was recognized for his reporting in Afghanistan.

ASG Senate passes divestment resolution Feb. 19, 2015

Associated Student Government passed a Northwestern Divest-sponsored resolution asking the University to divest from six corporations the resolution’s sponsors say violate Palestinians’ human rights. The resolution passed after more than five hours of debate with 24 votes for, 22 against and three abstentions.

Polar vortex forces NU to close Jan. 7, 2014

Northwestern delayed the start of Winter Quarter 2014 for two days after record-low temperatures and nearly two feet of snow. The cold weather compounded nearly a week of heavy snowfall in Evanston, which effectively shut the city down on the day classes were scheduled to begin. NU officials cited the “unusual combination” of record-low temperatures and delays in air travel and public transportation in the Chicago area. The missed days were the first Universitywide school cancellations since 2011.

ʻCollege GameDayʼ visits NU for Ohio St. showdown Oct. 5, 2013

ESPN’s college football preview show, “College GameDay” — which airs every Saturday from the location of the week’s top game — set up on the Lakefill during the fall of the class of 2015’s junior year, ahead of the Wildcats’ Saturday night matchup against Ohio State. The show’s visit marked its first time in Evanston since NU faced Iowa in 1995, although it also broadcast from Wrigley Field in 2010 when the Cats took on Illinois. With signs ranging from irreverent (“Kanye named his baby after us”) to academic (“Urban Meyer cites Wikipedia”) to slightly vulgar (“our endowment is bigger than yours”), students packed the pit behind the show’s set well before the sun rose over Lake Michigan. Some students arrived at the Lakefill as early as 6 p.m. the day before the show aired.

Dance Marathon 2014 raises more than $1.3 million March 9, 2014

Throughout the weekend of Dance Marathon 2014, as fundraising milestones were announced by DM’s finance committee, the previous year’s totals were surpassed nearly every time. Still, when it was revealed DM had raised $1,385,273, a record total and more than $150,000 greater than 2013’s, it was met with screams of amazement. Teary-eyed, executive co-chair Anna Radoff handed a check for $931,289.21 to Marissa Penrod of Team Joseph, an organization leading the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The Evanston Community Foundation, in its 17th year as DM’s secondary beneficiary, was presented with $103,476.58. It was the first time in DM’s history cash donations for the two beneficiaries exceeded $1 million. DM went on to raise $1.1 million in 2015, the fifth consecutive year NU’s largest philanthropy had broken the million-dollar mark.

Three racial bias incidents in 2012 led to a widespread movement for greater support for diversity and inclusion at NU. A Ski Team party in April 2012 sparked campus uproar after pictures of students dressed up for a “Beer Olympics” surfaced online. The Ski Team later apologized, issuing a statement admitting the party “consisted of obscene and offensive costumes.” In January, Tonantzin Carmona, a Latina student, reported being taunted while she was walking home. In early May, a senior and recent alum were playing tennis when someone allegedly threw eggs at them and yelled a profanity. In response, the University launched a new website, Respect NU, to make it easier for students to report such incidents. The incidents sparked forums and debates across campus on diversity at NU and led the administration to release a report on diversity compiled during legwork for the University’s Strategic Plan that students had previously requested be made public. In January 2012, students petitioned for the addition of an administrator dedicated to improving diversity at NU. Dona Cordero was appointed assistant provost for diversity and inclusion in Spring Quarter 2012 and Lesley-Ann Brown was named director for campus inclusion and community that fall. Cordero has since left NU. Students had been pushing for a diversity position within the administration since the previous year, when outcry over racial insensitivity rocked campus.

BEST OF BLOTTER March 2, 2012: Flower pot set ablaze

A flower pot on the porch of an Evanston woman’s porch in the 1900 block of Emerson Street was set on fire Wednesday afternoon, Evanston Police Department spokesman Jay Parrott said. The 71-year-old homeowner noticed the pot on fire and extinguished it. Parrott said the fire department responded to make sure the fire was properly extinguished, and Evanston police filed a report. It is believed someone set fire to the pot, Parrott said. However, he also said at this time there are no known suspects. In addition, Parrott said how the fire started remains unknown. Although police think someone set fire to the pot, the fire may not have been started by anyone at all, he said.

Sept. 26, 2012: Unknown person scratches car, leaves sugar

The owner of a 2011 Hyundai says his vehicle was tampered with sometime between Sunday afternoon and 7 p.m. Monday. The car was parked in an apartment building garage on the 400 block of Howard Street, Evanston Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Jay Parrott said. In addition to keying the car’s trunk, an unknown person forced open the gas cap and poured sugar in the gas tank.

Feb. 28, 2013: Burglar allegedly takes electronics, piggy bank containing more than $10,000

Someone broke into a 38-year-old Evanston man’s home in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue on Tuesday, Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said. Police responded to a call made by the resident. Someone broke the window, and police noticed the side door upon arrival, Parrott said. The burglar took a Nintendo Wii, SNES, Xbox, $200 in cash and a piggy bank that the resident said contained more than $10,000, Parrott said.

April 22, 2013: Everything but dog food allegedly stolen from Evanston woman’s packages

An Evanston woman’s packages were discovered at a wrong address Thursday with most of their contents stolen, Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said. A resident in the 800 block of Elmwood Avenue told police two opened Amazon boxes were mistakenly outside his or her home, Parrott said. Police contacted the intended recipient of the boxes, a woman who lives in the 1100 block of Ashland Avenue, Parrott said. The stolen items included coffee, lotion, hair conditioner and hair gel, totaling about $60, Parrott said. Whoever took the items, however, did not take the packages of dog food the woman ordered. Police returned the dog food to the woman, Parrott said.

Sept. 24, 2013: Police: Burglar used spoon to open restaurant’s register

Someone used a spoon to break into a cash register early Sunday morning at Greek Fire Grill in downtown Evanston, according to police. Between 1:45 and 2:30 a.m., the person entered through an unlocked back door and pried open the drawer with the utensil, Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said. The person took $100 from the restaurant, 1625 Chicago Ave. Parrott said detectives have video of the incident and are investigating.

Oct. 22, 2013: Evanston woman kicks man after he kicks her dog

An argument between two neighbors ended in injury Saturday, according to police. At about 11:40 a.m., a 41-year-old Evanston woman was walking her dog in the 700 block of Hinman Avenue when a 60-year-old man approached her, Evanston Police Cmdr. Diane Davis said. The two began arguing. During the argument, the man kicked the woman’s dog, Davis said, and in retaliation, the

woman kicked the man’s leg. No arrests were made.

Oct. 24, 2013: Startled by nonexistent fire, drunk man springs into action

An Evanston man who was cooking hamburgers in his apartment early Tuesday morning thought he had started a fire and sprayed a fire extinguisher throughout his kitchen and building hallway, according to police. The male has been charged with criminal damage to property in connection with the incident, which happened at about 3 a.m., Evanston Police Cmdr. Diane Davis said. The individual’s landlord complained his intoxicated mistake affected common areas in the apartment building in the 1200 block of Chicago Avenue. When authorities arrived on the scene, they saw an excessive amount of the extinguisher’s contents but no fire, Davis said. The man is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 22.

April 7, 2014: Driver hits car after it blocks library’s book return

A driver purposefully hit an Evanston woman’s car on Thursday, allegedly because the car was blocking the book return in front of the main branch of the Evanston Public Library, police said. The driver, a 65-year-old woman from Rogers Park, purposefully struck the Evanston woman’s car at about 6:30 p.m. in front of the library, 1703 Orrington Ave. A witness told police that after the driver hit the car, she drove toward the witness and nearly hit her before heading east on Church Street, Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said in an email. The driver returned to the scene and said she was upset because the car, which belongs to a 51-year-old Evanston resident, was blocking the book return, Parrott said. There was minor damage to the car, and the car’s owner decided not to pursue criminal charges.

Nov. 12, 2014: Northwestern student arrested in connection

with public urination and false identification

A Northwestern student was arrested Saturday after urinating in an alley way and presenting a fake ID, police said. The student was caught urinating in an alley in the 1500 block of Central Street at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Evanston police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said. When questioned by police, the student then presented an ID from Texas that was determined to be fraudulent, Parrott said. The student had been drinking, Parrott said.

May 7, 2015: Woman charged with battery after Burger King altercation

Police arrested an Evanston woman Tuesday in connection with attacking a Burger King manager, officials said. The manager of the Burger King, 1740 Orrington Ave., told officers Tuesday morning a female customer attacked her earlier in the day, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The 49-year-old customer complained to the manager that the roof was leaking and her seat was wet, and she became angry, police said. As the manager went to go check on the roof, she saw the customer fill a complimentary water cup with orange soda from the soda machine, Dugan said. When the manager told the woman she had to pay for the drink, the woman threw the soda at her, Dugan said. The Evanston woman then followed the manager behind the counter and pushed her, punched her and pulled her hair, Dugan said. Police who were called to Burger King saw the manager had red bruising around her eye, Dugan said. The 49-year-old woman was charged with misdemeanor battery and is scheduled to appear in court June 10. Editor’s Note: Jay Parrott currently serves as EPD deputy chief. THE DAILY NORTHWESTERN | GRADUATION ISSUE 19

By Joseph Diebold and Rohan Nadkarni

The people, games and teams that made the last four years so memorable Northwestern 43, Notre Dame 40 Northwestern salvaged something out of a disappointing 2014 football season, traveling to South Bend, Indiana, and rallying from 11 points down to upset a ranked Notre Dame team, the second consecutive time NU had won in South Bend. Embattled quarterback Trevor Siemian, in what would be his final full game under center, ran in a fourth-quarter touchdown and then led the Cats to a last-minute tying field goal, and after a Notre Dame miss in overtime, Jack Mitchell wrote his name in Wildcat lore with the game-winner from 41 yards out. The cherry on top of the victory was a video that surfaced online in the days following the game of NU players reacting excitedly to their postgame meal from Chik-Fil-A. Athletes: they’re just like us!

Cats top Syracuse to take home lacrosse crown

NU leads the way on unionization

At the time, it seemed like the revitalization of a dynasty. In hindsight, it may have been the end of an era. Northwestern defeated Syracuse 8-6 in 2012 to capture its seventh lacrosse national championship in eight years. Shannon Smith led the Wildcats with two goals and two assists in the final game on an illustrious career that saw the attack win the 2011 Tewaaraton Award and leave NU as the school’s alltime leading goal-scorer with 254. At the time, it was the Cats’ second straight national title and restored them to undisputed kings of women’s lacrosse after having their streak of five straight championships snapped in 2010. But the three seasons since have seen NU displaced from that perch, with Maryland winning the last two national titles to seize bragging rights in the new Big Ten. The Cats had their run of 10 straight Final Fours snapped in 2015.

Kain Colter and Ramogi Huma rocked the college football world in January of 2014 when they announced the Northwestern football team petitioned to form a players’ union with the National Labor Relations Board. The announcement set the stage for an extremely contentious hearing in downtown Chicago, where Colter and head coach Pat Fitzgerald essentially testified against each other. The players won their case in Chicago, and voted on forming a union in April of 2014. As of now, the result of the vote is locked away, as both Colter and Northwestern await a ruling from the national branch of the NLRB.

The win capped off an incredible freshman season for Tsirtsis, who took home not only the national title, but the Big Ten championship as well. After the match, an exhausted Tsirtsis, with blood running down his face, ran into the arms of head coach Drew Pariano, who lifted him up into the air as the two celebrated Tsirtsis’ accomplishment.

After 31 years at the helm of Northwestern baseball, Paul Stevens retired after the 2015 season. He tallied 663 total wins during his time at NU, a program record, and was twice named Big Ten Coach of the Year. “The greatest privilege I think that anybody can have is to put the uniform on representing this university,” Stevens said after his final game. “I’ve met some phenomenal people here over the 31 years.” NU announced on Sunday it has hired Illinois assistant coach Spencer Allen to replace Stevens. Allen is believed to be the first African-American to lead a major conference baseball program.

Miracle rally keeps Cats’ Big Ten streak alive With its streak of 15 consecutive seasons with either a Big Ten regular season or tournament title on the line, Northwestern women’s tennis battled Michigan for the conference tournament crown in 2014. The Wildcats trailed the Wolverines 3-1 before NU’s Nida Hamilton and Lok Sze Leung closed out their matches, leaving Belinda Niu, trailing 5-2 in the third set, as the Cats’ final hope. Niu wouldn’t lose another game. The senior won the next five games to complete NU’s miracle comeback and give the Cats their 15th Big Ten tournament title in 16 years. The streak would be snapped the next year, but Niu gave fans a memory they wouldn’t soon forget.

John Shurna rewrites the NU record books For men’s basketball fans among the class of 2015, it was all downhill from freshman year, which saw Northwestern reach the National Invitational Tournament for the fourth straight year and the last time in coach Bill Carmody’s tenure. The season was highlighted by John Shurna setting the NU record for points in a career against Minnesota. Shurna also scored 22 points to lead the Wildcats to an upset over No. 7 Michigan State, stopping the Spartans’ 15-game winning streak. Since Shurna’s graduation, NU has suffered through three consecutive losing seasons.

Tyler Miller leads men’s soccer to new heights Northwestern men’s soccer reached new heights during the four years the class of 2015 was in Evanston, starting with the 2011 season, when the Wildcats took home both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles for the first time in program history. The Cats’ success, which included four trips to the NCAA Tournament in four years, was sparked by a stalwart defense with goalkeeper Tyler Miller as its backbone. Miller, a member of the class of 2015 and four-year starter, capped his career with a stellar career in which he allowed just 12 goals in his 19 starts, becoming the only player in the nation to earn both All-America and Scholar All-America honors and be invited to the MLS Combine. He was subsequently selected in the MLS SuperDraft by the Seattle Sounders and recently made his first career start for the United States Under-23 national team, notching a shutout against Qatar. While Northwestern men’s basketball was continuing its ignominious run of never making the NCAA Tournament, women’s basketball returned to March Madness for the first time since 1997, capping the program’s first 20-win season since 1995-96. But the stay in the Big Dance was short-lived for the Wildcats, who earned a No. 7 seed, as they fell apart down the stretch of their first round matchup against 10thseeded Arkansas, blowing a 12-point lead with eight minutes to play and ultimately falling 57-55.

Bill Carmody’s time in Evanston runs out The most successful men’s basketball coach in Northwestern history was fired on a cold March day in 2013. The polarizing Bill Carmody was let go after 13 years with the school, during which he led the Wildcats to the only 20-win seasons in school history. An emotional Jim Phillips announced Carmody’s firing not long after a final season marred with injuries and (another) string of close losses. Carmody’s reputation as a master tactician wasn’t enough to save his job amid his failure to bring Northwestern to its first NCAA Tournament, a task now assigned to Chris Collins.

NU finally gets the monkey off its back Northwestern set aside its ignominious football history and earned its first bowl win since 1949 with a win over Mississippi State on New Year’s Day 2013. The defense recorded four interceptions, Venric Mark ran for a touchdown and the Wildcats left Jacksonville with a comfortable 34-20 Gator Bowl victory. The win made Pat Fitzgerald the winningest coach in program history, and the Wildcats finished the season ranked No. 17 in the country. After the game, Fitzgerald boldly announced the arrival of his program, declaring, “We’re here now, and we’re here to stay.” The victory was a watershed moment for a football program that experienced much heartbreak before — and since — the win. For better or worse, NU gets a new look

Jordan Wilimovsky chases his Olympic dream

Northwestern’s 2013 season went from promising to embarrassing very quickly. After a 4-0 start, the Wildcats blew a lead to Ohio State, then made headlines for all the wrong reasons amidst a five-game losing streak with their special “Wounded Warrior” jerseys. The tribute uniforms looked more like bloody flags than anything else. Under Armour claimed the uniforms were patriotic and representative of flags flown in harsh conditions over the world. The uniforms were panned nationally, and the Wildcats lost the only game in which they donned the threads— blowing a fourth quarter lead to Michigan before losing in triple overtime.

Perhaps the most decorated Northwestern swimmer since two-time Olympian Matt Grevers, Jordan Wilimovsky harbors Olympic goals of his own. The junior won a Big Ten title in the 1,650 freestyle, made his first NCAA podium with a third-place finish in that event and set NU records in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles. In July, Wilimovsky will swim for the United States at the FINA World Championships in Russia, looking to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team with a top-10 finish in the 10K, which he won at the 2015 Open Water National Championships.

Friendly Confines welcomes the Cats As part of Northwestern’s efforts to reach fans in the Chicago area, the athletic department reached an agreement with the Chicago Cubs to have several of its sports teams play games at historic Wrigley Field. The festivities kicked off with NU baseball defeating Michigan and lacrosse topping USC under the lights. Other teams — including football, which began NU’s dalliance with Wrigley with its game against Illinois in 2010 — are scheduled to appear at the Friendly Confines in the next few years as NU seeks to expand its reach in the Windy City.

Women’s golf brings home first Big Ten championship After 31 years without any hardware, Northwestern women’s golf made history in 2013, taking home its first Big Ten Tournament championship. The Wildcats held a lead of six strokes after one round and five strokes after two and made it stand up, holding off a late charge from Purdue to share the conference crown with the Boilermakers. NU went on to qualify for the NCAA championships for the first time since 2000, finishing 15th, then followed that up with an identical 15th-place finish at nationals the following year. NU followed that up in 2015 with a 10th-place finish, its best ever.
