Feminine Story Does beauty go with brains? Well, everyone who knows Dr. Matilda Nkechi Kerry, Medical Director of George Kerry Life Foundation (GKLF), would probably answer in the affirmative. She might not be the most beautiful woman in the world; she was in 2000 adjudged one of the finest in the land and crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria. Today, she is a medical doctor and has taken her career a notch higher by touching the lives of Nigerian women. She spoke with AMINA BRAI OMOIKE in Lagos.

W

hat is the George Kerry Life Foundation engaged in at the moment? Every two weeks or monthly, we have outreach programmes. The most recent one is a screening we held for Delta Women’s Association. We discovered that in our society, we are not likely to visit screening centres if we are not sick. So the idea is to take the screening to the communities. For a whole month, precisely towards the end of January and first week in February, we organize a free cervical and breast cancer screening for women. We educate them; we tell them that even when they detect the cancer, it is not a reason to become afraid or run away from us; after all, treatment is available. Once they hear that, they feel a sign of relief, and immediately one or two people came in for their screening, others were encouraged to come in. And the fact that treatment is available for women who test positive makes it a lot easier. Do you treat them also? The treatment takes about 10 minutes and the woman is free to go about her daily business, as she doesn’t have to be admitted. It is quite a simple procedure. For cervical, we use the instrument called the speculum. We use a disposable plastic type, which is less uncomfortable and not cold like the metallic ones used in some hospitals. We expose the cervix, we apply a reagent in a couple of minutes and we can tell the woman if she is positive and needs treatment or whether her cervix is fine. And it really is a beautiful procedure because it tells the woman if she needs follow-up treatment or she is okay to go for another year. We usually advise women to come three years after a woman has become sexually active. For instance, if a lady of 18 becomes sexually active, she should start getting screened at age 21. But she doesn’t even need to wait for those three years. Three years is like latest window she should have before she begins her cervical screening and after that, it should be done annually, because it is cost-effective. However, if it is that bad and you have to wait until there is free screening, don’t let it go beyond five years. Five years should be top limit. So, if you take cervical cancer screening to the communities; how do you get funding? The beauty of the foundation’s screening exercise is that a large percentage is done free of charge. Most women don’t have access to healthcare because of poverty. So, telling them to pay N2, 000 to get screened would be senseless. I could not fund it myself even if I wanted to. Most of our sponsors are individuals. We do not get a lot of corporate or government sponsorship, which is rather sad. Last year though, Access Bank Treasury group partnered with us to offer free cervical cancer screening to teach-

‘Becoming queen was My life asa beauty ex- beauty queen nevermy agenda’ -saysKerry Matilda Kerry, ex-MBGN & doctor - Matilda ers in Lagos State to mark Mother’s Day. Do you have a clinic? No, under George Kerry Life Foundation, we run a mobile clinic, meaning, we can be anywhere. We can set up cervical awareness screening in any community anywhere in Nigeria or in the world. And we also have an office where we invite women to come for their screening and treatment. Is the GKLF just about cervical cancer? No. Apart from cancer, I also do awareness for hypertension, diabetes and other non – communicable diseases. We also run training programmes for nurses on how to perform cervical cancer awareness and screening at the primary health care centres. Apart from that, we run disability programme, an anti stroke campaign, so George Kerry Life is so much bigger than just cervical cancer. We want to alleviate poverty; we want to help brilliant students who are in school to be able to push them forward into University. So hopefully, in another 10-20 years, we will be able to achieve that. When it comes to cervical cancer screening, what is the biggest challenge you have? That of funding is one because we can never have too much funds. The awareness we need to create and the people we need to reach are so many. And secondly, there is the bottleneck

of the corporate and governmental organizations. There are so many people you have to pass through before your letter gets to the person who is going to treat it, and sometimes, it gets lost in transit, and sometimes some people don’t think it is important. That is another huge challenge. But with the women, we are not having any challenge, once I reach the women and I’m speaking to them, there is hardly anyone in the crowd that will not want to be screened – unless of course they are not able to have it at that time. Are there situations where women cannot get screened? Yes. If a woman is pregnant, she can’t get screened because the cervix is already changing and the first step to checking for this is changes on the cervix. Also, some pregnancies can get aborted if the woman is screened. Also, when a woman is in her menstrual cycle, she cannot be screened. So mostly funding is one of our huge challenges. Why the name ‘George Kerry Life Foundation’? It used to be called the ‘Kerry Leprosy Foundation’. That was when I was still reigning as MBGN. My mission was raising awareness for the leprosy victims along Lagos-Benin Expressway. Somehow, I couldn’t do much with it because it was too restricted. However, I raised awareness to Edo State Government,

they took note of it and with time, they were building a home for the leprosy victims. After my reign and my work with the NCCPP, I decided to rename it George Kerry Life Foundation; after my late father, Dr. George Kerry. Every year, you have a ‘Bake Sales’ in respect of the cervical cancer awareness campaign. What is the idea? Every year, sales are held where we partner with some of the biggest and best bakeries in Lagos. The bakeries donate themed cakes which are auctioned. The funds realised there are channelled towards giving free screening and sometimes, treatment to women who cannot afford it. Why do you choose Bake Sales? Maybe it is because I have a sweet tooth (general laughter). A lot of people love cakes and those that understand don’t mind buying them at exorbitant prices since they know it is for a cause. Besides, we wanted to do fund-raising in a different way. Nigerians definitely prefer when they leave the venue with something, no matter how small. So far, how many women have been screened for cervical cancer by GKLF? Right now, well over 5,000 women have been. However, many more have benefitted from the awareness campaigns.

Feminine Story w

this WEEK

We see you are so passionate about cervical cancer. How did you get entangled with this whole thing? After school, I worked with an NGO – National Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme (NCCPP). Before then, I had been going for pap smears which also can show changes in the cervix. The truth is that the awareness was less than one percent so when I started the George Kerry Life Foundation, I decided to champion this cause.

cONTENT

You became a beauty queen as a first-year Medical student. How were you able to stay focused on your studies and graduate with good grades? When I won MBGN, I was still in 100 level, like you rightly mentioned and we were still doing general courses. By the time my reign was ending, I had crossed over to Medical school (LUTH) proper. But it was alright. The truth is that you can’t be a beauty queen forever. Would you say studying Medicine has helped your campaign? Certainly, being a beauty queen has helped me a lot in what I am doing today. It was during my reign as MBGN that I initiated this project. I travelled to Cyprus for the Miss World competition and met other queens deeply involved in certain campaigns, so when I returned, I decided to take my campaign for leprosy serious. Now you run this NGO. What impact has being Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria made on your life and foundation? Having to meet so many important people as MBGN, really gave me a lift. It made me more confident. Even now, when people hear that I was a former MBGN, they tend to listen to what I have to say – which I think is a good thing. So where does fashion come into your life as a Medical Doctor? You know, some things just don’t go away. No matter how serious I am, there is still that teeny-weeny ‘beauty queen’ factor in me. But I must confess that I am not a fashion-conscious person. I do not enjoy getting dressed and I do not enjoy shopping. But I have a stylist, who I run to whenever I have occasions to attend. I also have very fashionable sisters so they help me a lot with fashion tips but left alone, I would be in my jeans and T-shirt. With me it’s not about fashion, I prefer going for a massage, getting my nails and my hair done. I am not into clothes, shoes, or bags. Have you always loved jeans? Always!!!! I love skinny jeans. They can be casual or you dress them up and go out with them. You can also put them on a nice shirt and take them to work. They always have a way of flowing from one situation to another. I do love my jeans! When did you first fall in love with Medicine? My late father was a gynaecologist and my mum is a retired nurse. I grew up seeing people come to her father’s clinic ill and leave feeling much better. Right then, I knew I wanted to become a doctor. So, as soon as the chance came, I knew nothing was going to stop me from studying Medicine. You mentioned that your dad was a doctor. So how did you get into beauty pageantry? Didn’t your parents kick against it seeing that you had gained admission to study Medicine? Funnily enough, my late dad ‘inspired’ me to take part in the pageant. When I was growing up, every time we watched beauty pageants on television, my father would always say ‘my daughters are prettier than most of the ladies’. You know, we are six girls in my family. So, just before I got into university, I entered in for the Miss Surulere pageant and won. In my first year in school, I decided to try out Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and I won also. My family was very supportive. It was my big sister that bought the form for me and my parents were cool with it. They sensed that since I was still in my first year, I would easily catch up after my reign but I had to promise them that I would return to school. I didn’t dream of it like ‘I must be a beauty queen’. Some ladies include beauty contests on their agenda; I am not one of such people What was it like being a Medical student as Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria? My lecturers did not spare me and I was not

given preferential treatment because I was a beauty queen. I performed my duties as the MBGN and I was schooling at the same time. It was tough but I was focused. Most of my functions as a queen were in the evening. So, that made me a student in the day and a beauty queen at night (laughs).

So what is Matilda’s beauty regimen like? I am lucky to have great skin so I don’t do much. I just have a range of products that I use. Once in a while, I go for facials. I am on a low-carbohydrate diet and then I swim a lot.

As one who has toed that line, what do you think about beauty pageants now – compared to your days? Comparing beauty pageant in my days to what is happening now; there have been a lot of improvement. Awareness has increased. Gone are the days when beauty queens are looked down on especially since Agbani Darego won the coveted ‘Miss World’ crown. It became an eye opener to Nigerians and the reality has dawn on them that beauty pageants are not all about putting ladies on stage, having fun, and some silly rumours about immoral and indecent acts. Let’s go back a bit. How did you feel when Agbani Darego became Miss World – considering the fact that you actually crowned her? Oh my God! I remember that night; it was like unreal when it was happening. It was like really exciting for my friend, but for me, because she was my friend, and we are still pretty close, and we do relate , so it was interesting and that was the first time that Nigeria has ever won, so it was good, it’s still exciting.

So, do you still get recognized in public? Definitely. Once you are a beauty queen, you have no private life, everyone wants to know what is happening around you. You are exposed to all sorts of people with different characters and beliefs. You will then learn how to be tolerant, how to accommodate people, how to work with them. Being a celebrity, and the focus is on you, it might be difficult to know who your friend is at that time.

‘My husband was my best friend before we married’ Her bald hair style, beautiful face and cute petite stature stand her out in the crowd. Olapeju Agunbiade is a United Kingdom-based midwife, radio host, sex/fertility consultant and owner of one of the biggest face book pages, ‘let’s talk about it’ with focus on sex, relationship and infertility issues. Her “dark tunnelâ€? experience triggered her passion and commitment to offer counseling and solutions to couples with fertility challenge. LAIDE SOTUNDE brings you her recent exclusive chat with this interesting lady. Read on‌.. You are always bold and proud when talking about sex, where does the gut come from? My personality makes it easy. I am open minded, friendly, bold and blunt. I guess the attributes are the reasons. I honestly don’t know and believe there is anything that we can’t talk about. Nothing! Share the most embarrassing moment you’ve had in the course of ‘talking about sex’? I can’t think of any. I would say none. I have drawn the line from the beginning. That I talk about sex does not permit or give anyone the right to intrude into my privacy .I guess based on that, I would say none. Talking about sex was such a big deal. Speculations.....â€?I don’t think she is marriedâ€? etc. In life, people will have their opinion of you even before setting eyes on you. She talks about sex; she must be this and that. That is their opinion; they have the right to that. What I do not owe anyone is an explanation or to justify who I am to them. No way! Even those who do not talk about sex, they have wrong impressions about them. So what is the point? The

interesting thing is this- I started LTAI for infertility issues only, but along the line I found that 60 percent of couples going through this ugly situation are affected in other ways, their sex life and their relationship. Over the years, the reality just dawned on me that I cannot isolate one from the other. You have to

talk about sex and of course relation will read interesting notes about sex but can’t comment on the wall-they inbox their comments because this person or that person must not read their honest contributions. I’m so used to that and I accept members of the pages/groups as

they are. When it comes to talking about sex, Nigerians love to pretend a lot. Matter of understanding comes into this as well. My husband knows I research so much when it comes to sex issues. He with me. What else can I ask for? So who else do I owe any explanation? No one! All I can say is I have been accepted out there as I am. And I thank those who do. My prayer is that people’s negative attitude to sex discussion will gradually change. I learnt your life experience made you have more passion for fertility issues, would you mind sharing your experience with us? at a very young age of 18, but I was managed well. Later, we decided to do the operation. Before the operation, I signed the consent form. I was aware of possible side effects/ complications. Sadly, I had one of them. We tried for 8 months after the surgery. By then, our wedding was almost two years and some months. Nothing happened. They investigated us as a couple, my husband was okay but I had bilateral tubal blockage. IVF was suggested; we saved and went for it. I will never forget the attitude I received from someone that I look up to as mum at work who said “there is no point spending money on IVF to have children, that I should relax, that it will happen. What are we hiding? People are having sex every second. Lots of marriages break because of sex related issues. Is that what God created sex for? Sex is to be enjoyed; a gift from God and couples ought to tap into it.

for 4 months or something like that. I said, nothing like that, that as soon as the bleeding stops, I am starting another one. I had to sign a special consent form that the second one was against medical advice because it was too soon. I knew " " I wait? Our second IVF was successful; $ son through caesarean section because of the previous scar from myomectomy. Before he turned one, I started " $ " back. I just couldn’t handle it. We took a 50-50 chance to do the third IVF, it failed. So after the failure, I did the second myomectomy. Then, I tried the 4th IVF and failed. At that stage, I was beginning to have interest in assisted reproduction. I started by doing some short courses. Eventually, I studied `Assisted Reproduction` - Msc. Whao, got so much knowledge. At that stage, we still wanted another child, but ....none worked. I won’t disclose how many IVF we did before we decided as a couple that enough is enough. I started thinking of ways to enlighten people that are infertile, to reach out to them to be useful because after the course, I started working as a fertility nurse coordinator. I did that for two years. I started with a radio programme on infertility and it was a bang! People/couples suffering in silence were able to contact me and I have always been there for infertile couples since then. I want them to have what I did not have, I mean someone to talk to. And I thank God that I can say, Yes, I am on their fertility issues with them. They open up, I advice on steps to take. Then I brought it to facebook.....I am sure facebook brought me out more. Right now, I do a talk show on the internet. My desire is to do this talk show on TV screens in Nigeria where I am needed more but still waiting for sponsorship. I’m sure that dream will come true one day. Have you ever at any point in your marriage felt threatened that another woman can snatch your handsome husband? No! Never. I do not give negative thoughts a chance. I think positives so that positives would be attracted to me. Negative thoughts, I do not bring into my marriage. It works for me; and Intend to keep it going that way. At what point do you think a woman should quit her marriage, or are you in

relationships. Why should they? Why on earth would a man abuse a woman physically, mentally, emotionally and expect her to stay? Is that life. Does a woman not deserve to be happy for the sake of ‘Mrs’ title? How many more women must be killed by men from abuse? So, such divorce means enough is enough. The second part, unfortunately, we are not tolerant as much as we ought to be, especially those of us living abroad. I will end this question with a quote I read on line. A reporter asked an old couple “how did you manage to stay together for 65 years? The woman replied,we were born at a time when something was broken we would ' ( What was the toughest situation you ever faced in your marriage, and how did you deal with it? He made the infertility journey less painful. that clique of women who believe marriage should be ‘enjoyed and endured’? For me, I would say at the point of constant abuse and complete irresponsibility. I beleive marriage should be enjoyed and endured. I can’t say enjoyed or endured because we have to be realistic; challenges will come that we must endure.

Thank God for jerry curls and weave on etc. Did lots and lots of hair treatments; edges will grow then break off, it became so frustrarting. So just before I turned 40, I said I want to go back to jerry curls. For that to happen, I have to grow a natural hair, no problem. After my 40th, I shaved my hair and started using lace wig or wig cap (can`t even remember). One day, it fell off at home, it had started growing but as usual, tangling as well. It did not look nice at all. My husband said, “well, for this hair to grow, you must hide it. Use a wig or continue with the lace capâ€?. The second one lasted a week, fell off (I guess because there was no hair to give it a grip). He then said, “maybe you should just cut it again and have a different

iron and curling iron (so long as the heat isn’t too high), you should minimize heat styling as much as possible. Choose hairstyles that don’t rely on so much heat, as well as gentle styling methods like wraps, wet sets and twists

CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION This is crucial for having healthy hair. Besides the right shampoo and conditioner, use leavein conditioners as well. You also need a good deep conditioner; use it at least once a month. Well-moisturized hair is less prone to dryness and breakage, leading to more hair retention.

RELAX WITH CARE cut down on the amount of times you relax your hair. Relaxers not only dry out your hair, but the chemicals decrease the natural moisture your hair produces. Chemical abuse is one of the biggest causes of hair damage in black women. When it comes to growing relaxed hair longer, you can’t relax too often, but when it’s time for a touch-up, get one because the longer you wait, the greater the chance of breakage occurring where the relaxed hair meets the new growth. I recommend relaxing your hair once every two months at the very least. Overlapping a relaxer onto

previously relaxed hair is anoth major cause of breakage. If you choose to wear your hair relaxe stylist and stick with him or her – the fewer people you have applying chemicals to your hair the better.

EXTRA NOURISHMENT

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCALP

Besides a regular cleaning routine, you need to provide extra nourishment to your hair. Jojoba oil is the best hair moisturizer. Look out for products that are rich in jojoba oil and apply on the scalp every 2 - 3 days. Oil treatment is also necessary to provide your hair with additional nourishment. Warm some coconut oil or olive oil in a pan and apply it on the roots of your hair with a cotton wool. Coconut oil enters the hair cortex and strengthens it. Follow this oil treatment routine at least twice a month.

Hot oil treatments every 2-4 weeks ensure a healthy nourished scalp. Organic castor oil stimulates hair growth and a few drops away. Avoid keeping weaves and braids for too long So ladies to maintain your hairline, avoid keeping weaves and braids in for too long. I recommend keeping a weave in for two weeks and braids in for a month at most

ell phones have very quickly become an integral part of our everyday lives as we can communicate through phone calls or text-message from virtually anywhere. As the use of cell phones grows, it becomes more important to understand the etiquette rules applied to cell phone texting usage and pinging with an iphone. In the Car t 6TJOH ZPVS DFMM QIPOF UP UFYU NFTTBHF ping while driving has become something of a dangerous epidemic to both you and your passengers. There are more and more car accidents every year because of people trying to type with their thumbs while driving. Text messaging while driving is rude to your passengers because you are showing blatant disregard for their safety as well as ignoring whatever conversation that may be going on. If you need to know immediately what the text message says and respond to it, politely explain the situation to one of your passengers and ask them to read the text message and type the response for you. If you are uncomfortable asking one of your passengers to read the text message, wait until you are somewhere more private where you can read and respond to the message yourself. If you are a passenger in the car and are receiving text messages, also remember that it is rude to disregard the other people with you to respond to a message. If it cannot wait, explain to your fellow passengers that you need to respond immediately and do so quickly. Otherwise, wait until you are in a more private location and not engaged in conversation before responding. Officials of NANS, who paid a courtesy visit to Keyamo in his Abuja office, said their visit was to identify with his governorship ambition as well as assure him of the support of Nigerian students. They added that their decision to identify with Keyamo’s struggle in Delta State was taken at the 66th Senate meeting of NANS held at the Benue State University, Makurdi. The student leaders recalled that Keyamo had fought several battles for Nigerian students at various times in the past and it’s now their turn to stand by him in his gubernatorial ambition. “We have come to partner and work with you to achieve victory. We want to encourage you, as you cannot work alone in this battle, because over the years, you stood by our members in the various battles and challenges with the authorities, right from your days at the Gani Fawehinmi Chambers,”
