I am banker’s nightmare - Ori Adeyemo Ori Adeyemo is the Managing Consultant of Forensic Consulting. He has garnered relevant work experience spanning over 20 years with over 13 years in financial forensic practice. It was his petition to the National Assembly on November 12, 2007 over the unethical malpractices of the Nigerian banking industry that led to the probe of the banks in June 2008 by the House of Representatives. His October 14 2008 petition to the Minister of Finance led to the reinstatement of the uniform accounting year-end for all banks in the country effective December 31, 2009 after it had been shifted and later cancelled by the erstwhile CBN Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo in August 2008. He is a social commentator on the need for an urgent and practical reform in the Nigerian banking sector. Sola Bodunrin-Sanusi recently spoke to our correspondent in his Ikeja, Lagso office on the Nigerian banking industry and other issues. Excerpts…

orensic Accounting is one profession that is not really known. Where is the borderline between auditing and forensic accounting? There is a very strong, clear-cut distiction between the two. With auditing, there are standards; what I mean by standards is that there are procedures for doing the job and in reporting it, but in forensic accounting, there is no standard and there cannot be any. Basically, what forensic accounting is all about is investigation. What an auditor will believe, a forensic accountant is trained not to believe anything. Even if you talk on and on convincingly, a forensic accountant will not believe you until he’s able to prove to himself that you’re correct. A forensic accountant employs all manners of skills, which are outside accounting and more into law, technology and ICT. Even native intelligence is required in carrying out his job
Native intelligence? Does that mean you have to employ the services of a soothsayer to help unravel an accounting problem or you need to be trained as one? No, I don’t mean that kind of native intelligence. What I mean is that you have to be street-wise in this kind of accounting; my style of accounting is novel, and you are always on the attacking side. It is brash; at times I call it ‘agbero’ accounting just to achieve a good result. But for an auditor, there are rules and procedures either in doing the job or reporting it. In forensic accounting, it is like; ‘based on my investigation from the documents before me, these people said that they bought this car for N10million and
I went to the market and found out that a brand new one goes for N8miliion’. An auditor would ordinarily take the N10million invoice you gave to him and accept it, whereas a forensic accountant goes beyond sighting of the invoice; he does in-depth investigation to confirm every issue in the transaction. So, it’s a different ball game; forensic accounting is a relatively new concept and as a forensic accountant, you must have it at the back of your mind that 90% of the job you take will end up in court - either civil or criminal. I should have about 400 cases in court against banks with over N150billion recoverable against them. I understand the nature of the banking practice in Nigeria because it is packaged to annihilate the customers’ interest and business. That is the essence of banking in Nigeria. There’s an interest to defraud the customer. After manipulating the customers’ accounts against the basic fundamental terms and conditions of the purported contracts, they begin to act unilaterally, thereby building spurious debts against customers by playing on the ignorance of the customers. These same banks will begin to use the instrumentality of coercion, extortion, police, EFCC and even court, to force the customer to submission. What is the CBN doing about this, or is it not aware of
these practices by the banks? It is the commercial banks that are regulating the Central Bank of Nigeria and not the Central Bank regulating the commercial banks. I will give you an example. Last year, the CBN came out with a programme, they said they wanted to review the guidelines to bank charges and what they wrote was that they met with relevant stakeholders and based on that, they came up with the purported revived guidelines to bank charges and the exclusion draft. When I saw the exclusion draft, I wrote a petition to the presidency, I wrote a similar petition to the Attorney General of the Federation; wrote to many people telling them it’s all lies and that I was not consulted and as the nemesis of the bank, because I represent the bankable Nigerians, I have over 400 cases in court against banks and if the CBN is going to consult with any consultant, I should be the person. What if the CBN decided to consult another persons and not you? What is the antecedent of that other person? Are you then saying that you are the most vocal forensic accountant in the country today? My sister, let’s go down memory lane. Do you know why? In 2007, when Nigerian banks were celebrating super profits,

I wrote a petition to late President Yar’Adua saying `look, don’t mind these banks, all of them are dead banks, probe them now before they begin to go under one by one`. I told him that they(banks) will go under and when they are going under, they will go with the capital market. It was based on my petition that the House of Representative conducted a probe of the banking industry in June 2008. I was a consultant to the House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Currency headed by Hon. Ogbuefi Ozongbachi. But the question now is: what happened thereafter in 2009 when Sanusi came? Sanusi came and told us that the banks were not healthy! Then he sacked nine managing directors and what happened? Do you know the current senate president, Senator David Mark wrote to me saying if he had known, he would have listened to me. Go to my website, the letter is there. Are you aware that the Nigerian banks practice a uniform accounting year end, all of them? It was as a result of my petition to late President Yar’Adua. And what happened then? Former governor of CBN governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo came out to say that the uniform accounting year-end will start in December 2008, that was in January 2008, and he came out to say that it had been postponed till December 31, 2009; that all the banks in Nigeria will close their books at the same time. I then wrote a petition to Soludo, I told him,`look, I know you are trying to deceive Nigerians because there is no basis for him to shift the uniform accounting year end from December 31 2008 to 2009. Because, one, you were the same person who said the banks should merge through consolidation and we all know that your consolidation was fraudulent. You told us after the purported consolidation that we now have mega banks each with minimum deposit of N25billion and they can do large scale ticket transactions, why are you now telling Nigerians that the reason you are shifting the date is because of business interest rate as well as utilization of funds. Since you said the banks are now so big not minding the fact that they have gone to the capital markets several times to do IPOs and deceive Nigerians and said ‘it is your bank, come and put your money - 419 IPOs`. I said `secondly, in respect of your interest rate hiking, why should the banks hike interest rate? Why did you remove that of the former governor of CBN, Chief Joseph Sanusi?` When Soludo received my petition, do you know what he did? He came and said he was cancelling outright. I said fine, if that is how you want it. Immediately, I petitioned President Yar’Adua and he told the former minister of finance, Muktar in January 2009 and said the Federal Executive Council met and said uniform accounting year-end must start and the banks came together and said ‘yes’. After the recapitalization project, are Nigerian banks still healthy? There’s none, and if there’s any healthy one,
I will tell you the truth. Are you aware that since 2009, Sanusi has guaranteed inter-bank placements in Nigeria? The implication is that the banks need no due diligence when they are lending money to one another. This is so because any money a bank lends to another one is believed that it is lending it to the Federal Government. So, they don’t need to fear. Now, I’m also aware that the purported inter-bank guarantee is the exclusive responsibility of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation. It is only the NDIC that has the statutory power to do interbank. What inspired you to this kind of fearless advocacy? I had an inquisitive mind even as a child. I have been a non-conformist all my life. I am from Opopoyeosa in Ibadan, Oyo state, and if you know Ibadan very well, our area is known for breeding and producing thugs. It is only by the grace of God that I got educated, so getting into a messy fight isn’t new to me. When I am on a case, I make sure I get to the bottom of it, whatever it takes to unravel the mystery involved. Nature has trained me for what I am doing now. What were your working experiences before floating your own company? I graduated from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, in 1987 with a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering (Computer Technology option) and became an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria(ICAN) in 1996. It was after my graduation, while working, that I started picking interest in accounting. I then studied for ICAN and came out successful. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1995 and an Associate in 1996. I started Forensic Accounting by the side in 1997 and on a full time basis in January 2006. I had worked with Pastor Ituah Ighodalo’s accounting firm - Woodgate, among others. How do you find time to relax? I relax on my job; when I’m handling a case, I catch my fun. How do you cope with the home front when you travel pursing your clients’ cases? My wife is there to do that. But as a man you have a role to play in the home as well as your wife, what happens to your role as a father in the home? I have an able wife who stands in for me any time I am needed and I am not available and again before leaving for work, I would have fulfilled all righteousness as a man. So who is this able woman that keeps the home front going when you are not there? Because of the nature of my job, I try as much as possible not to put my family in the public eye. It is for security purpose.

We started the business in the US as Trans-World Consulting, my husband had the vision and I joined him. In the cause of his consulting in Nigeria,
he had a client in the northern part of Nigeria who he installed security apparatus for their bank, they needed a telemetry system and so he came back to the US to get the equipment and he was able to attend to their needs. It wasn’t the normal security

Meanwhile, I was in America working and also doing my masters degree. When he has jobs like that, I back him up. At a stage, we felt we needed to use Trans-world security to sell security devices because with Trans-world consultant, we can`t advertise it, so I said there was a need to have Trans-world security, a arm that deals in security and my husband agreed with me. With that, I got business cards laid out for Trans-world security and anywhere I went, I dropped our busniess card. I remember that I was on the high table with a bank executive and I gave him my card and he said `so you deal in security, come and install security systems in my bank`. I did it for their headquarters as well as all their branches to their satisfaction. That was how we started from monitoring system to CCTV and burglar alert. We also trained people under the consult-
ing arm and when it became larger we broke it into school of management. So it’s been metamorphosing since we began.

of governance, that is where everything that happens in the state is being cooked. I am here today to represent my people from Epe. % I have been involved in various forms of businesses. After my secondary education, I had to wait for eight years before going to the university; not because I wasn’t brilliant enough but
! a reasonable source of living to cater for myself and my education. I come from a humble family so I had to do any type of legitimate job that came my way. I was once a bus conductor, a gardener, a bookshop clerk and all sorts but I thank God I came out with something I can be proud of. I attended Lagos State University where I studied Economics and came out with a second class upper. % pany and was the National Secretary of the Waste Managers Association of Nigeria before I ventured into politics. Due to my full involvement and tight political schedule, my business is now being run by capable and well-motivated professionals. In the past, I believed that politicking wasn’t a big task but it became a different story when I got fully involved. It involves a lot of research, committee !
! making, monitoring the constituency we represent and a whole lot which takes a lot of our time. I resume in my 6 by 10pm every day. I even come to work on Saturdays and public holidays if I have matters to attend to. It is very tasking, not what people think it is, because many feel we are here to enjoy. If you are serving in Lagos State under the leadership of Governor Babatunde
OKADA BAN I disagree with that. We never banned Okada, we only restricted their movements. We have over 10,000 roads in Lagos and we only restricted their movement in about 700 roads; not even up to 1/10th of roads in Lagos. We only restricted them from the major roads for the safety of lives and properties. Go Since that restriction, accidents on Lagos roads have dropped. Even the armed robbery rate has gone down drastically. Just last year, a medical doctor’s life was wasted; Somebody just came down from an okada, crossed to the other side of the road and shot the doctor; crossed back to mount the okada and zoom off. The okada riders are now more vigilant; they know their colleagues and if they see a strange okada rider in their territory, they question him. Do you know the number of people who lost their phones and other valuables to boys who pretend to hawk on the road? Many children who are supposed to be in school are not there because their parents sent them to hawk. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the lives and properties of its people. Why can’t the bread sellers and other hawkers put their goods in front of their houses and sell there if they can’t afford to rent shops? Must they hawk on the streets and major roads? Like I said earlier, I am from a humble background; I remember back then, if we wanted to buy beans, we would have to go down the street to Mama Aina’s house. People will come to you to buy goods if they know the goods you sell are nice. We have so many businesses that actually started from the living rooms and today, they are mega businesses. The coca-cola brand of this world started from the dining room. FUTURE PLANS IN POLITICS My plans are in the hands of God. God has a way of directing me and when the time comes, He will direct me to the right path. The most important thing is that I am a very ambitious person, and I believe God has the ultimate say.
Raji Fashola, there is no time for enjoyment or lazing around because you will always have a big task starring at you; you have a target and you must deliver on time. You don’t have any excuse for not performing. Lagos State is a state of excellence so we strive to excel in everything we do. Even the judiciary said they want to start working on Saturdays now, which to me shows the kind of state we are running and it is not like other states. You can’t compare the economy of Lagos State to some countries in Africa; we have a very big economy, so there is no resting or excuse for non-performance. HOMEFRONT I must say with all sense of responsibility; I give kudos to every immediate family member and spouse of politi <
FASHION & STYLE @ sion I am attending at a particular time. We are always in Agbada on our sitting days and if you are not wearing Agbada, your Buba has to go beyond your knee. It’s about branding ourselves. In the Lagos State House of Assembly, we portray charisma and carriage. If I am wearing native, you can never see me without a cap. I don’t go for designer lar designers. I see what I like, pick it up and pay for it. My most cherished material possession is my house! I love operating in a nice environment. SUCCESS SECRET IN POLITICS If you want to excel in politics, education is the key; you must develop a character that will showcase a positive personality. If you have that, it will attract people to you. You must have a mentor and you must also be a free giver. If you are not a giver, you are just wasting your time because you cannot excel politically if you are not kindhearted.

It’s best to work on making your own lashes long, full and thick so that your eyes are noticed with or without eye makeup. There are several inexpensive methods for enhancing eyelash growth. The methods are quick and simple, and it’s likely you have all you need in your kitchen or medicine cabinet. GETTING IT RIGHT WITH YOUR
CUTLERIES
M
ost times when we dine out on dates or at times business lunch time and a table is set before us, we get confused on how we handle our cutleries. Even some our regular ‘owambe’ parties have step up their menu- menu table to a standard dinning out one. How do you not mess up a business lunch break with business partners or a dinner with your future in-laws? Check out our tips on getting your eating utensils right. Both Continental and American style are accepted in cutlery etiquette. The difference is that the American style of using utensils has a zigzag sort of manner, leaving one utensil on the plate and switching hands to pick up the fork when putting the food in the mouth. The Continental style eats with both utensils in hand until the meal is finished. For countries that have western dining, Continental style is usually followed. Both methods are acceptable in these countries. Cutlery will differ according to what is served. For instance, if there is pudding, a set of pudding utensils, a pudding spoon and fork will be set on the table. Some fine dining restaurants seem to have a specific cutlery for everything. If in doubt, do not be shy to ask the waiter.
your thumb against the side of the handle. Two Utensils. Using two utensils as opposed to one is preferred because food is easier to manipulate. In formal dining, two utensils are used for the appetizer course, main course, salad course, dessert course, and fruit course. Finished with a Course. When you are through with each course: 1. Place the knife and fork parallel with the handles in the four o’clock position on the right rim of the plate; 2. The tips rest in the well of the plate in the ten o’clock position; 3. The blade of your knife should face inward; 4. The fork tines may be either up or down. 5. This position signals to the server that you’re finished. It also decreases the chance that the utensils could fall to the floor when the plates are cleared.
HANDLING CUTLERIES: CONTINENTAL STYLE & AMERICAN STYLE For right-handed dinners Continental Style Hold your fork in your left hand, tines downward.
Continental Style1. The fork is laid on the side of the plate with the tines downward and the handle in the eight o’clock position. 2. The knife handle is laid in the four o’clock position. 3. If space permits, the tines are rested over the blade of the knife.

Conditions that lead to dandruff have a bad effect on your eyelashes too. Manage your stress and avoid unhealthy eating habits. Both can trigger dandruff and weaken hair health STEP 6 Eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet. Make sure you get plenty of protein-rich foods. Choose foods with vitamins A, C and E like orange and yellow vegetables, citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. Eat whole grains for their biotin, inositol and B vitamins. Ensure you get

American Style Hold your fork like a pencil, with the shank extended between your thumb and index and middle fingers. Your fourth and fifth fingers rest in your hand. For leverage, the index finger is extended along the back of the fork, as far from the tines as possible. Since its ‘disappearance’, neither the bank nor its promoter - Lone Seed - has explained where the yacht sailed to. But it can now be revealed that the ‘missing’ boat has found its way back to river Thames in London where it originally came from. The boat was reporedly sighted last week at Dockland, London, perhaps waiting for ‘God-knows-who’. It would be recalled that the boat was brought in pretence that Lagos State government had huge investment in the deal until Governor Fashola publicly disowned the yacht. The deal was later taken to court by Diamond Bank seeking order to retrieve the boat from Lone Seed, a company allegedly owned by Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi. For several months, the boat was docked at Apapa Naval dockyard where it went for refurbishment while for the bank, it was a business gone sour as the boat tipped to change the face of

“Kakadu the Musical” is an exciting, inspirational and moving experience that takes its name from the famous Lagos night club of the sixties, which gave birth to an era of wonderful music and the distinctive social life that followed the birth of a young nation. Set against the background of a newly independent Nigeria “brimming with hope, dreams and expectations”, characters like the Manager of Kakadu, Lugard da Rocha, fondly called “Lord Lugard” takes us on a spectacular musical expedition that delves into the human stories that connect and weave through Kakadu, the club and the dream it represents. With the unforgettable music of the sixties and seventies intricately woven into the dialogue, we travel through this journey guided by a rich and diverse choral arrangement. Through the “lens” of the music, we experience the passage of time, and follow the memorable and easily recognizable characters through their aspirations and relationships, the pain and loss of friendship, and ultimately the conflicts presented by the factors that led to the civil war. Guided by the music and dance we experience the erosion of innocence in the famed city of Lagos, and the triumph of hope over despair and defeat. The dance is sensational and complements an exciting blend of music that produces an amazing and unforgettable theatrical experience complete with multi-media presentations of slices of history. “Kakadu the Musical” is one seamless weave of music, drama and dance, never before done or performed like this in Nigeria.
