The prophet, known for his annual predictions, some of which he claimed came to pass, said unless Nigerians embark on fasting and prayer, more political crises and killings would occur. “This year, the worst type of terrorism is coming; and corruption if not checked will cause great problems. Corruption has taken over Nigeria and God is about to judge Nigeria. There is an angel that is going to cleanse this country once and for all. The seat of the president is vacant. If at all there will be election, I see a northerner becoming president. The more they try to rig this coming election, the more violent it will become,� he said. he Nigerian Medical Association, Benin branch, has agreed to provide pathologists to carry out an independent autopsy on the farmer, Samuel Imaikop and three labourers shot dead by policemen in Benin on November 24, last year. The autopsy, which will be carried out on Monday, January 6, follows the consent of the Police to take the pathologists to the victims’ graves for exhumation. The Coroners Court in Benin had ordered the police to exhume the bodies of the four victims alleged to have been killed extra-judicially, for autopsy, to determine the true cause of death.

It would be recalled that in December last year, the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN) initiated investigations into the killing of 42-year-old Samuel Imaikop, a farmer, along with three labourers he hired to work in his farm on November 24 by the Edo State Police Command at the Benin byepass. As a result of public outcry, as well as protest’s that paralyzed business activities by families of the deceased and human rights groups, a case was instituted against the Police and consequently, the Benin Coroner’s Court ordered that the bodies of the dead be exhumed for proper autopsy.

he Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) plans to increase its surveillance and anti-vandalism operations in the new year, to rid the country of oil thieves who are illegally siphoning the nation’s oil resources. According to the Commandant General of the Para-military agency, Dr. Ade John Abolurin, new strategies would be adopted by the NSCDC to tackle the destruction and sabotage of essential national infrastructure including oil pipelines in 2014. In this interview with Saturday Newswatch in

Abuja, Abolurin also spoke on the performance of the NSCDC in 2013 and the planned introduction of an elite anti-vandalism squad line routes. He also called on Nigerians to cooperate fully with in 2014 to enable the agen security challenges facing the country. The Commandant General disclosed that a new elite anti-vandalism unit has been set up by the Para-military agency, while CCTV cameras are being installed in strategic parts monitor pipeline routes

Dr. Abolurin also called for increased collaboration and sharing of intelligence rather than unwarranted competition between security agencies in the understanding that all the agencies serving the nation as security arms or apparatus are working towards one goal of securing the coun people. “I have said always that partnership, collaboration and synergy can assist us all in our work when properly harnessed in the operations of security agencies. It requires understanding of all to see the government as our own. The project is also our own. total of 1.2 million children were immunised against integrated measles in Kaduna State in the year 2013, a State Primary Health Care Agency Alhaji Hamza Ikara, the Health Education @ told newsmen in Kaduna that the immunisation programme recorded over 85 per cent success. Car bomb kills four in Lebanon A

t least four people were killed and 77 injured when a car bomb exploded in a residential neighbourhood in southern Beirut, Lebanon. Video from Al Manar showed people gathered around smoking cars, and others bringing hoses to put out the flames. Thick clouds of dust rose as buildings collapsed after the blast. The district, Haret Hreik, is known as a Hezbollah stronghold. The blast was strong enough to be felt in nearby neighbourhoods of

the capital. A source with knowledge of the security situation said that the car bomb exploded near AlJawad restaurant, about 50 meters (55 yards) from a building used by Hezbollah. There has not yet been any claim of responsibility for the blast. Lebanon’s armed forces, urged people not to gather in the area in case of further explosions while experts are gathering forensic evidence. The explosion comes less than a week after a

car bomb exploded in downtown Beirut, killing half a dozen people and injuring dozens. Among those killed in that blast was Mohamad Chatah, a former Lebanese finance minister and ambassador to the United States. He was an outspoken critic of Hezbollah and the Syrian regime. Hezbollah, a Lebanesebased, Iranian-backed Shiite militia that is better equipped than Lebanon’s army, has been supporting government forces in neighbouring Syria’s civil war.

Politics Boko Haram: Security agencies involved —Tsav Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, a former commissioner of police in Lagos State, does not mince words anytime he speaks about Nigeria’s problems and likely solutions. In this interview with GODWIN AKOR, he suggests dialogue with Boko Haram in order to achieve quicker results. He also raised the alarm on the spate of corruption and other vices, while at the same time advising that monies being wasted on frivolities should be channeled towards proper funding of education. ow would you rate Nigeria’s educational development in the past one year?

Nigeria has done badly in education. State governments have not looked at the welfare of teachers very well. There have been strikes at all the levels of education. Look at the Joint Education and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the problems associated with the examinations it conducts yearly. Look also at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the performance of its candidates. Look at ; ; % ƒ ;;+ „ $  no learning for several months. In the tertiary institutions like the universities, almost half of the year has been spent on strike. Academic activities in the universities have been Federal Government is to blame on the issue of poor performance. Government said it would provide some services, but it failed. In education, we have recorded zero. Developed nations grew through education and the presence of a secure environment. Our rulers have their children overseas, and so abandoned our universities. In the night, there is no light for children to read; no light for research in the universities when they are in session. Only few families have generators but they cannot run them for a whole day unless they have two or three. When people praise President Goodluck Jonathan, I say they are sycophants. If education is to record progress in 2014, government has to fund it adequately. Our progress depends on it. We started almost at the same time with countries like Brazil. Now, Brazil can manufacture armored vehicles, while we can only manufacture furniture. The fundamental problem is corruption. In the daytime, people condemn corruption but in the night, they embrace it. ;; K € % $ promise. If one can properly channel the N255 million used to buy two bullet proof vehicles and discourage the stealing of oil, the problem of inadequate funding for education will be solved. igeria, at the best of times, is a country where almost anything goes. The economy is on auto-drive. The drivers of the economy are high on their own ludicrous ideas, which are so fundamentally � # reason and consider alternative options freely canvassed by many experts. The political leadership has no vision – no big idea around which its world-view is formed. It has no destination in view, it lacks any discernible direction. As a result, the public sector is largely a mortuary for ideas. There is no cue to follow. Ideas are seen only through the eye of # % % interests. Policies are largely driven, with the interests of the oligopolistic few in mind or for scoring personal pips, grabbing more power or simply for the purpose of personal " [ big picture. > [ # evident in the conduct and body language of a section of the public sector charged with the responsibility of regulation over the @ these agencies of government ought to be watchdogs – CBN over banks, NERC over the power sector , DPR in the oil industry, SEC should regulate the capital market, NCC to oversee telecommunications, NBC saddled with responsibility over broadcasting, NCAA is in charge of aviation, and the Consumer Protection Council ought to protect consumers. These are just a few among the many others tasked with ensuring that players in the various sectors they regulate play by the rules, and that consumers are not only protected but that the government itself receives what is due to it from these players. But with the watchdogs lost in the sea % who they should keep eyes on, and others permanently in bed with the players in their sector, Nigerians have been left unprotected, # violated by rabid capitalists. How can it be that with the virtual absence of regulation (in the interest of the consumers, as opposed to that of their pockets), that some people argue that the private sector is the driver of development in the economy? If such fallacy can stand the rigour of proof in any clime,

argue for this parasitic private sector with its claws out to only suck the people dry? How does the private sector successfully drive development outside of an enabling environment and regulatory framework fashioned by the public sector? What we have is a government that has shirked its responsibility at providing the enabling infrastructure, but levies licensing and sundry fees on players, who are then left to trample on Nigerians and free to play the waters as they so desire, as long as the regulators are not % Across board, the so-called organised private sector is on its own – left to roam and prey on Nigerians. They are free to steal from their shareholders, swindle investors, * % * % * tax, cook books and generally rig the system, * > % % become lackeys of those they are meant to regulate, plainly incompetent, or just fagged out and overwhelmed by the enormity of the task they are faced with.

The rot in the banks is well-documented. We have had banks which were ‘set-up’ simply to be robbed blind by pseudo-owners masquerading as majority shareholders. There are also many so-claimed publiclyowned companies, known to all as such, but % of some of our ‘big’ men, who claim to be majority shareholders. These companies are run from the bedrooms and pent-houses of these men, with no checks and balances in place, or only observed in its breach. A lot of these companies are listed on the stock exchange in name only. They run their own course, mostly unmitigated. Annual General Meetings are deliberately slated for locations inaccessible to the shareholders, notice of meetings are deliberately sent out late, when they do, simply to disenfranchise shareholders. Weeks back, I received a notice of a meeting on a “Scheme of Merger� from BAGCO. For a meeting scheduled to have been held on February 19th, the invitation was only received from the sender and stamped by the

? @ 55 K # / the company was not keen on the presence of some shareholders at that meeting. Those who $ [ sector. Some publicly listed companies have not even bothered to hold Annual General Meetings, while a lot of those who make the # ‚ %  [ registrars caught up in the maze. Dividends, where paid, do not reach shareholders. There is a huge fund of unclaimed dividends waiting to be applied to any meaningful purpose, except making banks fat. Several hurdles are on the path of investors barring them from proceeds of their legitimate ^ labourious, warranting expensive journeys % Transfer of ownership of shares from deceased owners to their trustees involves some tiresome and untidy processes. Stockbrokers have capitalised on the systemic disorder to defraud investors. Some frustrate Shares have been sold without authorisation # $ # $ % simply closed shop and gone underground. Investors are left high and dry. Few years back, a number of these companies -Starcomms, DAAR Communications, Resort Savings and Loans, among others raised money from the public % % # Who knows what is happening with these companies today? Why so much secrecy about when AGMs are to be held? Who knows what is happening with those fund managers who made away with the funds invested by Nigerians? What is the fate of ordinary Nigerians conned into investing in the capital market? We only hear of a forbearance package for stock-brokers who were largely instrumental to the fraud that led to the collapse of the market, what of the ordinary Nigerians who lost savings and # < $ scam? Who speaks for the people? Where is the regulator in this mess? Where is SEC and NSE? Where is the Finance Ministry? Where is the AMCON to buy the debt of the masses and not just that of the BIG men? The capital market is only a microcosm of the all-round rot in the private sector, appropriately so too, since the players there cut across all the sectors.
