ounder of the Evangelical Church of Yahweh, Lagos, Primate Theophilus Olabayo, has once again predicted that the country would experience more crises this year, warning President Jonathan not to contest the 2015 presidential election. The prophet, known for his annual predictions, some of which he claimed came to pass, said unless Nigerians embark on fasting and prayer, more political crises and killings would occur. “This year, the worst type of terrorism is coming; and corruption if not checked will cause great problems. Corruption has taken over Nigeria and God is about to judge Nigeria. There is an angel that is going to cleanse this country once and for all. The seat of the president is vacant. If at all there will be election, I see a northerner becoming president. The more they try to rig this coming election, the more violent it will become, he said. Olabayo, in an exclusive interview with Saturday Newswatch in Lagos, further said in spite of the numerous crises, the country would not break up. “Those who are embezzling our money; if they are not dead, some of them would end up in prison. There are so many fake prophets who are saying the county will break up but it will >>Continued on Pages 2

agos State Government yesterday appealed to doctors in its public health sector not to join their counterparts in other parts of the country in their proposed nationwide strike. This was contained in a statement issued in Lagos by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba. In it, Governor Babatunde Fas-

hola (SAN) appealed to the doctors to consider the interest of residents of the state as well as their (doctors) medical ethics, and shun the proposed strike by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). Ibirogba said any industrial action by doctors would bring untold hardship to the people, which could result in avoidable deaths. He said the nature the doctors’ work does not permit them to embark on industrial action without

Benin 4: NMA okays independent pathologists for autopsy Bodies to be exhumed Jan 6 Thankgod Ofoelue, Benin City

T

he Nigerian Medical Association, Benin branch, has agreed to provide pathologists to carry out an independent autopsy on the farmer, Samuel Imaikop and three labourers shot dead by policemen in Benin on November 24, last year. The autopsy, which will be carried out on Monday, January 6, follows the consent of the Police to take the pathologists to the victims’ graves for exhumation. The Coroners Court in Benin had ordered the police to exhume the bodies of the four victims alleged to have been killed extra-judicially, for autopsy, to determine the true cause of death.

It would be recalled that in December last year, the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN) initiated investigations into the killing of 42-year-old Samuel Imaikop, a farmer, along with three labourers he hired to work in his farm on November 24 by the Edo State Police Command at the Benin byepass. As a result of public outcry, as well as protest’s that paralyzed business activities by families of the deceased and human rights groups, a case was instituted against the Police and consequently, the Benin Coroner’s Court ordered that the bodies of the dead be exhumed for proper autopsy.

Don’t contest 2015 poll – Prophet tells Jonathan Continued from Page 1 not break up. There will be modalities. The Federal Government may not be powerful as before. There will be state police. God has prophesied it for long that there would be a constitutional conference. We have to pray so that it will succeed because I saw a storm coming and the storm would touch every sector of the country like economy, political; every sector of the country will be of the highest order. He added: “We have to pray for most of our leaders like former president Shehu Shagari, Maitama Sule, Rabiu Musa, Bola Tinubu and many others. They need prayers to survive, and they should pray against bereave-

ment. This coming storm would enter churches because corruption has entered churches. “I saw the poor facing the rich. Before the North Africans revolution, God revealed it to me and I said it. More powerful revolutions are coming to this country and that is why we have to be very careful. I saw the death of two prominent Obas. An attempt would be made to kidnap one of the governors in the South-West while Bamanga Tukur would be removed as PDP Chairman but he would be given an international assignment. Concerning President Jonathan, Olabayo warned him against contesting the 2015 election. He also warned the People Democratic Party against rigging the coming

elections. “PDP think they have a joker but that joker will fail them. If they attempt to rig this election, there will be anarchy in this country. Many people will still join APC. They will try to impeach the President but they will not succeed. President Jonathan needs to mellow down so that he will not be made the ! " prayerful to survive between now and 2015. Olabayo is however sad that in spite of his warnings against impending dangers, many people fail to listen to him. “They call people like us prophet of doom but we are not bothered. In most cases in Nigeria, people don’t want the truth. All I have been saying have been coming to

NSCDC will curb oil theft, vandalism in 2014 – Abolurin Cyril Mbah, Abuja

T

he Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) plans to increase its surveillance and anti-vandalism operations in the new year, to rid the country of oil thieves who are illegally siphoning the nation’s oil resources. According to the Commandant General of the Para-military agency, Dr. Ade John Abolurin, new strategies would be adopted by the NSCDC to tackle the destruction and sabotage of essential national infrastructure including oil pipelines in 2014. In this interview with Saturday Newswatch in

Abuja, Abolurin also spoke on the performance of the NSCDC in 2013 and the planned introduction of an elite anti-vandalism squad line routes. He also called on Nigerians to cooperate fully with in 2014 to enable the agen security challenges facing the country. The Commandant General disclosed that a new elite anti-vandalism unit has been set up by the Para-military agency, while CCTV cameras are being installed in strategic parts monitor pipeline routes

and electricity cables prone to vandalism by criminals. “I urge Nigerians to embrace peace and ensure that they live in peace with others and assist in ensuring adequate protection of lives and property. Let us ensure that peace thrives in Nigeria and also support security personnel to preach to others that vandalism is wickedness. It is sabotage and should not be encouraged, he said. He disclosed that the NSCDC has mapped out new strategies and acquired modern ICT facilities which it hopes to deploy this year to strategic locations where critical national assets are constantly threatened.

Dr. Abolurin also called for increased collaboration and sharing of intelligence rather than unwarranted competition between security agencies in the understanding that all the agencies serving the nation as security arms or apparatus are working towards one goal of securing the coun people. “I have said always that partnership, collaboration and synergy can assist us all in our work when properly harnessed in the operations of security agencies. It requires understanding of all to see the government as our own. The project is also our own. So, to be able to protect them properly, we need to cooperate with each other and together face the challenge with one mind. If we do so, we would have reasoned.

IMF chief in Kenya to deepen partnership

Community cries out over T threat of military invasion Sylvester Idowu, Warri

T

ension mounted in the oil rich Ugborodo community in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State last night over alleged planned invasion by a combined team of Navy and Army personnel in the early hours of today. The invasion, according to Saturday Newswatch investigations, might not be unconnected with the leadership crisis rocking the community by two factional leaders of Ugborodo Community Trust in a bid to position themselves for the proposed multi billion naira gas plant by the Federal Government. It was however, gathered that the leadership of one of the factions, which allegedly enjoy the backing of the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, had engaged the services of the military to invade the community under the guise of searching for illegal oil bunkerers. The current tension in the community, security sources disclosed, was hinged on the recent arrest by the Navy of the spiritual head (OlajaOrori), an open critic of the other faction and two others for illegal oil bunkering, and their subsequent arraignment before a court of law. They are presently at Okere Prisons seeking bail. Saturday Newswatch gathered last night that the latest invasion was expected to take place at about 3:00am today, with troops from NNS Delta, Warri Naval Base and men from the Joint Task Force. A text message circulated by leaders of the community which necessitated investigations claimed: “This time they plan to invade Aruton (Ugborodo) community with a combined military force comprising the Navy and Army on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 3:00am. “This unholy plot has

Stakeholders scoreYero low on 2013 budget implementation Baba Negedu, Kaduna

F

ollowing the presentation of the 2014 budget by the governor of Kaduna State, Governor Yero, to the state’s House of Assembly, stakeholders in the state have carpeted the state government for its failure to fully implement last year’s budget. A Kaduna State based activist and the Executive Director, Center for Creativity and Leadership Development, Abdullahi Ali Dogo, described the implementation of last year’s budget as average and urged the state government to put in situation this year. The Kaduna State government recently presented its 2014 Appropriation Bill to the state House of Assembly, proposing N198.6bn for Governor Yero said the estimate is aimed at continuing ongoing projects he inherited from his predecessors and at sustaining the current peaceful atmosphere in the state. The budget tagged

“Budget of Peace and Continuity is made up of Capital Estimate of N124.4bn and Recurrent Expenditure of N74.2bn. “To be candid, the performance of the budget in the state has not been excellent, I can only say that the government has tried but there is need for improvement. There are areas that need to be toughened for government to get its desired revenue, and execute its budget well, Dogo said. Citing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Dogo revealed that “many of the monies are going into private pockets, and there is no way government

will be able to meet the demands of the budget. If I have to rate the administration, I would give it 50 percent mainly because the governor is not vast in the area of generating internal revenue, and the people with him in government are not telling him the truth about what is happening. What the governor needs to do is overhaul the personnel in that internal revenue section, he said. On his part, Barrister Mohammed Musa Soba, chairman of Kaduna based non-governmental organisation, Kaduna Salvation Movement (KASMO), said the content of the 2014

Appropriation bill shows that the state government is not ready to change its ways, accusing it of lacking what it takes to take the state to the next level. In a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna, Soba said that last year’s budget implementation was not up to 20 percent, the same way the high debt rate of the state was not commensurate with the amount of money borrowed by successive administrations. “The N198.7bn budget # [ # Governor Yero to the state Assembly is indeed a duplication of empty promises that have

become the trademark of the administration since December 2012. Statistics have shown that the 2013 budget was not up to 20 percent implementation, and all the monies budgeted for projects and other services have not been accounted for, he said. He added, “Consequently, with the poor and fraudulent implementation of the 2013 budget, the 2014 so called “Budget of Peace and unity is in fact a budget of semantics, rhetoric and hopelessness considering the emptiness of its contents, the deceit in its conception and its acidic unrealistic cosmetics.

Car bomb kills four in Lebanon A

t least four people were killed and 77 injured when a car bomb exploded in a residential neighbourhood in southern Beirut, Lebanon. Video from Al Manar showed people gathered around smoking cars, and others bringing hoses to put out the flames. Thick clouds of dust rose as buildings collapsed after the blast. The district, Haret Hreik, is known as a Hezbollah stronghold. The blast was strong enough to be felt in nearby neighbourhoods of

the capital. A source with knowledge of the security situation said that the car bomb exploded near AlJawad restaurant, about 50 meters (55 yards) from a building used by Hezbollah. There has not yet been any claim of responsibility for the blast. Lebanon’s armed forces, urged people not to gather in the area in case of further explosions while experts are gathering forensic evidence. The explosion comes less than a week after a

car bomb exploded in downtown Beirut, killing half a dozen people and injuring dozens. Among those killed in that blast was Mohamad Chatah, a former Lebanese finance minister and ambassador to the United States. He was an outspoken critic of Hezbollah and the Syrian regime. Hezbollah, a Lebanesebased, Iranian-backed Shiite militia that is better equipped than Lebanon’s army, has been supporting government forces in neighbouring Syria’s civil war.

Politics Boko Haram: Security agencies involved —Tsav Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, a former commissioner of police in Lagos State, does not mince words anytime he speaks about Nigeria’s problems and likely solutions. In this interview with GODWIN AKOR, he suggests dialogue with Boko Haram in order to achieve quicker results. He also raised the alarm on the spate of corruption and other vices, while at the same time advising that monies being wasted on frivolities should be channeled towards proper funding of education. Excerpts:

H

ow would you rate Nigeria’s educational development in the past one year?

Nigeria has done badly in education. State governments have not looked at the welfare of teachers very well. There have been strikes at all the levels of education. Look at the Joint Education and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the problems associated with the examinations it conducts yearly. Look also at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the performance of its candidates. Look at ; ; % ƒ ;;+ „ $  no learning for several months. In the tertiary institutions like the universities, almost half of the year has been spent on strike. Academic activities in the universities have been Federal Government is to blame on the issue of poor performance. Government said it would provide some services, but it failed. In education, we have recorded zero. Developed nations grew through education and the presence of a secure environment. Our rulers have their children overseas, and so abandoned our universities. In the night, there is no light for children to read; no light for research in the universities when they are in session. Only few families have generators but they cannot run them for a whole day unless they have two or three. When people praise President Goodluck Jonathan, I say they are sycophants. If education is to record progress in 2014, government has to fund it adequately. Our progress depends on it. We started almost at the same time with countries like Brazil. Now, Brazil can manufacture armored vehicles, while we can only manufacture furniture. The fundamental problem is corruption. In the daytime, people condemn corruption but in the night, they embrace it. ;; K € % $ promise. If one can properly channel the N255 million used to buy two bullet proof vehicles and discourage the stealing of oil, the problem of inadequate funding for education will be solved. Anything goes in the name of capitalism Simbo Olorunfemi

igeria, at the best of times, is a country where almost anything goes. The economy is on auto-drive. The drivers of the economy are high on their own ludicrous ideas, which are so fundamentally # reason and consider alternative options freely canvassed by many experts. The political leadership has no vision – no big idea around which its world-view is formed. It has no destination in view, it lacks any discernible direction. As a result, the public sector is largely a mortuary for ideas. There is no cue to follow. Ideas are seen only through the eye of # % % interests. Policies are largely driven, with the interests of the oligopolistic few in mind or for scoring personal pips, grabbing more power or simply for the purpose of personal " [ big picture. > [ # evident in the conduct and body language of a section of the public sector charged with the responsibility of regulation over the @ these agencies of government ought to be watchdogs – CBN over banks, NERC over the power sector , DPR in the oil industry, SEC should regulate the capital market, NCC to oversee telecommunications, NBC saddled with responsibility over broadcasting, NCAA is in charge of aviation, and the Consumer Protection Council ought to protect consumers. These are just a few among the many others tasked with ensuring that players in the various sectors they regulate play by the rules, and that consumers are not only protected but that the government itself receives what is due to it from these players. But with the watchdogs lost in the sea % who they should keep eyes on, and others permanently in bed with the players in their sector, Nigerians have been left unprotected, # violated by rabid capitalists. How can it be that with the virtual absence of regulation (in the interest of the consumers, as opposed to that of their pockets), that some people argue that the private sector is the driver of development in the economy? If such fallacy can stand the rigour of proof in any clime,

argue for this parasitic private sector with its claws out to only suck the people dry? How does the private sector successfully drive development outside of an enabling environment and regulatory framework fashioned by the public sector? What we have is a government that has shirked its responsibility at providing the enabling infrastructure, but levies licensing and sundry fees on players, who are then left to trample on Nigerians and free to play the waters as they so desire, as long as the regulators are not % Across board, the so-called organised private sector is on its own – left to roam and prey on Nigerians. They are free to steal from their shareholders, swindle investors, * % * % * tax, cook books and generally rig the system, * > % % become lackeys of those they are meant to regulate, plainly incompetent, or just fagged out and overwhelmed by the enormity of the task they are faced with.

The rot in the banks is well-documented. We have had banks which were ‘set-up’ simply to be robbed blind by pseudo-owners masquerading as majority shareholders. There are also many so-claimed publiclyowned companies, known to all as such, but % of some of our ‘big’ men, who claim to be majority shareholders. These companies are run from the bedrooms and pent-houses of these men, with no checks and balances in place, or only observed in its breach. A lot of these companies are listed on the stock exchange in name only. They run their own course, mostly unmitigated. Annual General Meetings are deliberately slated for locations inaccessible to the shareholders, notice of meetings are deliberately sent out late, when they do, simply to disenfranchise shareholders. Weeks back, I received a notice of a meeting on a “Scheme of Merger from BAGCO. For a meeting scheduled to have been held on February 19th, the invitation was only received from the sender and stamped by the

Dividends, where paid, do not reach shareholders. There is a huge fund of unclaimed dividends waiting to be applied to any meaningful purpose, except making banks fat. Several hurdles are on the path of investors barring them from proceeds of their legitimate ^ labourious, warranting expensive journeys % Transfer of ownership of shares from deceased owners to their trustees involves some tiresome and untidy processes. Stockbrokers have capitalised on the systemic disorder to defraud investors. Some frustrate Shares have been sold without authorisation # $ # $ % simply closed shop and gone underground. Investors are left high and dry. Few years back, a number of these companies -Starcomms, DAAR Communications, Resort Savings and Loans, among others raised money from the public % % # Who knows what is happening with these companies today? Why so much secrecy about when AGMs are to be held? Who knows what is happening with those fund managers who made away with the funds invested by Nigerians? What is the fate of ordinary Nigerians conned into investing in the capital market? We only hear of a forbearance package for stock-brokers who were largely instrumental to the fraud that led to the collapse of the market, what of the ordinary Nigerians who lost savings and # < $ scam? Who speaks for the people? Where is the regulator in this mess? Where is SEC and NSE? Where is the Finance Ministry? Where is the AMCON to buy the debt of the masses and not just that of the BIG men? The capital market is only a microcosm of the all-round rot in the private sector, appropriately so too, since the players there cut across all the sectors.

ive it to them. The Nigeria U17 team are the champions of the world. What a sight it was in United Arab Emirates where they took the world to the cleaners in a spectacular and enviable manner. This is what makes a champion. Revelations of the 2013 U17 World Cup are the Nigerian team. They are now the most successful team in the age grade competition (after winning four times-1985, 1993, 2007 and 2013), one more than Brazil. < / [ with the Mexicans. With three goals on the night, Nigerians emerged victors of the competition. What’s next for these Eaglets? While writing these, I remember the 2007 invincibility of late Coach Yemi Tella. Six years gone by and we are yet to sight them play for Nigeria. I remember the cerebral Toni Kroos who featured in 2007 for Germany and how he commands a regular shirt in Bayern Munich reigning UEFA Champions league winner. But our Nigerian $ # >$ < Xavi-two revered footballers in the world today were also discovered at this same competition in 1999. Four times we have won this competition, but yet waited for 19 years to win the nations cup, wobbled and fumbled in South Africa 2010 World Cup and missed Germany 2006 World Cup. This ought not to be, lest we become the laughing stock of the world. The only reward that will favour both these Eaglets and the nation is to see them graduate through the ranks-U20, U23, and the Super Eagles. I will be a happier person if these boys go on to dominate the football podium through the next 20 years. University of Lagos kelechi.amakoh@gmail.com

CHAN 2014 Oboabona, Mba’s exit a blessing- Ladipo

By VICTOR ENYINNAYA

P

resident General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), Dr. Rauf Oladipo has described the departure of Godfrey Oboabona and Sunday Mba from the CHAN Eagles as a blessing to the team as it opportunity to dig deep and discover capable replacements. He added that Keshi has again proved his worth to the team. “The former captain has demonstrated that he is worth the job. His thinking on how to get a team that would represent CHAN appearance has never being in any doubt. “Therefore, l wholeheartedly back him all the way. He has

proved to be a worthy and [ # ' Speaking with Newswatch sports during the week, he said if the players have not got places in Europe to further their career the present crop of players would not have been discovered. According to him, after all Zambia once lost a generation of its players in a plane crash only to build her team around one survivor of that side and year’s (1994) Africa Cup of Nations held in Tunisia. “The CHAN Eagles will spring up surprises. Once the team is focused and determined to make history it can do well. Let me salute the inward looking nature of the Stephen

Keshi led technical crew. “Their mission to rebuild the national team has never been in any doubt and I urge them to $

> $ dedicated workers to squeeze water out of stone as Keshi and his crew have spent on this project that have turned around the CHAN team that will face its opponents in South Africa from January 1,’ he posited. Oladipo insisted that the team will give good account of itself in the competition. Like typical Nigeria side, it will be [ # summit progresses. The- 23man team Keshi pencilled down for the South African CAF organised Championship cannot be said to be too weak. Nigerians should rally round him. It is like we did in 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, he added. He acknowledged that it won’t be an easy competition as other countries are also there to win. The fact remains that the Eagles under the watchful eyes of a nonsense manager will strictly stick to their schedule And ensure they will make something tangible out of the whatever situation. He has being on the saddle and knew how these players thinks and reasons. He will condition them # [ < doubt.

Brazil World Cup crucial for health of football in 2014

T

his may come as something of a shock but despite so much doom and gloom – and which aspect of the world’s daily life is free of it? - football enters 2014 in rude, good health. However, World Cup in Brazil must not be underestimated. Never have more people been playing or watching the game around the world and the most commercially dependent sectors (international and league competitions) continue, by and large, to record increasingly advantageous contracts in # climate. This is does not mean that the game has to lower its [ $ % ‚ and corruption in general at administrative as well as playing levels. Two important signals were raised over the past 12 months. " of the evils of racism within  Â? up initially by Kevin-Prince Boateng’s walkout during a friendly in Italy last January and – to their belated credit – both FIFA and UEFA woke up to the issue. Within the European

federation, as president Michel Platini has regretfully had to concede, many senior administrators and fans, remain to understand the basic evil. Still, a ramped-up system of warnings and graded stadia closures is starting to have an Progress will demand years of education (this is a societal more than sports issue) but at # within the game and should be acknowledged and welcomed. " ‚ This has been by far the worst and most depressing year in the history of world football as far as results manipulation has been concerned. At least, once more and if belatedly, the game has woken < # [ ‚ % for which coherence and unity remain at odds. This is largely because of the nature of the crime: the internet explosion has opened # [ gambling crime syndicates who can operate from unrestricted territories and feed inadequacies within (mostly) club football. Not that federations themselves have been innocent. The Zimbabwe and South

African scandals demonstrated ‚ Ăš% ƒ # generous) can be persuaded to betray the game in their own back yard. Financial control is a key factor. UEFA has made a worthy start with Financial Fair Play but, until one of the biggest names is expelled from Euroepan club competition then scepticism will remain over its long-term value. The conundrum is that revenue standards are market led and while the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, Manchester City & Co keeps pushing up the sponsorship and TV revenue ceilings then competitive pressure further down the chain tempts clubs/presidents/ Ă?
