Why Obama was named to speak at ceremony

W

hen Peter Gosselin wrote a letter to the White House staff about why President Barack Obama should speak at a Syracuse University-sponsored event created on behalf of his late wife, journalist Robin Toner, he made two pitches: one formed around the president’s agenda and one based on the personal story of his wife.

The Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting was created in 2009 to honor the profession of political reporting and those who do it.

Toner, an SU alumna, was the first woman to be the chief political correspondent for The New York Times, and at one point in her career, Gosselin, also a journalist, said he thought she was being groomed to become the paper’s first female executive editor.

Toner died due to complications of colon cancer in November 2008, and Gosselin found that one way to honor her memory for both their twins, Nora and Jake, 18, and her beloved profession of political reporting was to establish the Toner Prize in her name.

Butterfly superstition inspires junior’s tattoo

After spending time with a friend’s family on the New Jersey Shore this past summer, Cassidy Farrelly began to notice something unusual. A yellow butterfly seemed to follow her wherever she went.

Farrelly, a junior economics major, said she would always be the first one to spot the yellow butterfly. There were never any other butterflies around it, and her friend’s mother told her she didn’t usually see butterflies in the area.

There’s superstition that butterflies are actually our loved ones who have passed away and are watching over us, Farrelly said.

When Farrelly was a senior in high school a few years earlier, her brother passed away. The butterfly created an immediate connection to this in Farrelly’s mind.

“I had been thinking a long time about a tattoo I wanted to get for my brother Pat, and this finally dawned one,” Farrelly said.

In February, Farrelly had a yellow butterfly tattooed on the back of her neck to commemorate her brother. The butterfly is designed as a skull with yellow and black shaded wings and antennae, done

in a style reminiscent of the Grateful Dead logo. The tattoo was done at Resurrected Tattoo in Syracuse.

Despite a ten-year age difference between Farrelly and her half-brother, the two were very close. After their father moved to Ireland, all he requested was that Farrelly and her brother would get dinner together once a week.

These weekly dinners, which occurred throughout the time Farrelly was in high school, made her and her brother’s relationship a lot stronger.

The weekend before her brother passed away, the two siblings went to Rhode Island for a college visit.

Farrelly said her brother was really excited to travel with her, and it was the first time that they had done something big like a trip together.

“We really got so close,” Farrelly said, reflecting on that college visit. “It essentially worked out as a way of me saying goodbye, even though I didn’t know it.”

With Farrelly going to college, she said that it felt like the age gap was closing between her and her brother and it felt so great.

The presidential and vice presidential candidates for the Student Association’s 60th session covered a wide range of topics at Monday night’s SA debate, from sexual assault prevention to improving diversity and inclusion at Syracuse University.

The candidate pairs in the debate included Eric Evangelista and Joyce LaLonde; Charlie Mastoloni and Jessica Brosofsky; and Andrew Brendel and Tom Duszkiewicz. They squared off for an hour inside Stolkin Auditorium, discussing the ideas they plan to implement if elected. Brendel and

Duszkiewicz had not made an official announcement for their campaign before the debate.

SA is currently in its 59th session and Aysha Seedat is president. Outside of the cabinet, there are four committees and four boards that report directly to the association.

important for them to accomplish while in office.

Evangelista said he and LaLonde would work to make the campus a safer place for students, in part by investing $500,000 in a surveillance camera system. LaLonde added that improving safety extends to improving access to resources on campus, such as mental health care.

Mastoloni didn’t offer a specific initiative but, stressing the key component of his and Brosofsky’s campaign, said he hopes to listen to SU students and garner feedback from them in making decisions.

“That’s what Student Association should be about,” he said. “It’s an

association. It’s not a government.”

Brendel said the primary goal of his campaign would be to reduce the financial burden on students.

That would include an attempt to get textbook prices reduced to an amount closer to the prices that the SU Bookstore pays for the textbooks, Brendel said.

“Just doing that alone would take away some of that financial burden,” he said.

Syracuse University students with 2015-16 SU men’s basketball season tickets are being given the first opportunity to purchase tickets for SU’s Final Four game against No. 1 seed University of North Carolina this weekend.

Tickets costing $40 each went on sale Monday at 9 a.m., according to an email sent to SU men’s basketball season ticket holders. All seats are located on the floor level in

Houston’s NRG Center behind the Sour Sitrus Society, SU’s studentrun pep band.

Those who purchase tickets are only guaranteed these seats for the SU game, which will take place at 8:49 p.m. on April 2.

Student ticket holders can only purchase one ticket each, and must have a valid SU or State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry ID in order to make the purchase, according to the email see tickets page 8

No arrests were made on or around Syracuse University’s campus Sunday, police said, despite there being a strong police presence in the area before and after the men’s and women’s basketball teams secured spots in the Final Four of their respective NCAA Tournaments.

Prior to Sunday’s games, students gathered at Castle Court and elsewhere near campus before many of them moved to bars such as Chuck’s Cafe to watch

the games. A number of students then returned to Castle Court and other places around campus to celebrate after the men’s and women’s basketball team topped the University of Virginia and the University of Tennessee, respectively, in their Elite Eight games.

Views lack respect on college campuses

he recent release of the Chancellor’s Workgroup on Diversity and Inclusion’s final report has given new life to buzzwords like “diversity” and “inclusivity.” But the absence of recommendations regarding the acceptance of varying political ideologies is representative of a greater cultural problem on a campus as liberal as Syracuse University’s.

The workgroup made suggestions on how to improve the university’s relationship with underrepresented groups at SU, including the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities and students and faculty of color. Yet the Syracuse University campus arguably still lacks acceptance for marginalized political leanings like conservatism — leaving students on the right side of the aisle as a stigmatized population on college campuses.

Though the issue tends to go unnoticed, this stigma impacts the ways in which conservative students are able to enjoy their college experiences. We all come from different backgrounds, with separate interests, but it’s not right for students’ families to shell out thousands of dollars per year on an education in an environment where they are thought less of because of their political views.

Even on a personal basis, I’m not an over-the-top political person, but I deserve the respect that I have for others on this campus. And this level of respect is one that every conservative student is entitled to when this rift is likely a combination of the increasingly liberal millennial demographic and the arguable lack of diversity within faculty ideology, a problem that spans across universities in regions throughout the United States.

There was outrage at Emory University just last week over an unidentified person who wrote “Trump 2016” in chalk at various locations on university property.

It was an act that apparently left many students no longer feeling “safe.” Yes, that’s right, over chalk.

Fox News reported that protesters and politically-inclined campus groups vocalized concern for those who support Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s “insensitive” speech and ridiculed his backers

for being promoters of hateful rhetoric and discrimination.

Sure, part of the problem may be that millennials have become too sensitive. But just last semester in a class on the U.S. federal government in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, any time a known Republican politician’s name came up, I saw a bickering among the majority of students — a condescending tone for anyone who supported something they didn’t.

All things considered, though, students may not be the ones totally responsible.

In February, a student at Pomona College named Steve Glick, who was also the editor-in-chief of the Claremont Independent journal, stepped down from his position at the college’s Writing Center. Glick said higher-ups attacked him for preventing the center from becoming a “safe space” for students, most likely as a reaction to his story about no-whites-allowed “spaces” at the Claremont Colleges.

mentioning Glick’s name, saying that they had a “white supremacist” on the staff, Glick said. He was eventually placed on probation by the center’s leaders over what they considered a hostile tone, leaving him no choice but to quit.

“I think the bigger issue is that the professors are so overwhelmingly left-leaning at most schools,” said Glick.

A 2015 study from the Heterodox Academy found that the number of liberal faculty members at universities across the country has jumped from 42 percent in 1990 to 60 percent in 2014. Yes, college is supposed to be meant for exposure to different beliefs, but that doesn’t mean that it’d be beneficial to fill universities with a vast majority of liberal professors.

When conservative students are made to feel silenced in this way, a classroom can become very one-sided without attempts from a professor to make material more objective or open for fair debate.

For example, if there were to be a discussion about income inequality, students shouldn’t be forced into analyzing readings with similar liberal viewpoints or required to listen to one left-leaning guest lecturer on why the respective class being a majority white proved their argument on disproportionate wealth.

That’s not to say income inequality isn’t a structural problem, but without students being exposed to different political perspectives on the topic, it’s simply not possible for a potential and informed solution that would aid both sides to emerge.

In this way left-leaning universities have fostered an environment that makes certain rational political viewpoints feel unwelcome and it’s necessary for the institution to stand up for them. And these schools should look to create a campus community in which there are more balanced classroom environments by encouraging a faculty body of diverse political opinion and students to be more considerate of seemingly minority political views.

Student shares ceremony scheduling frustration As I posed for my senior yearbook photo, the photographer asked me what my school was so he could select the right tassel.

“I have two,” I said. “Your home school,” he clarified. When I told him I wanted to be photographed with both, he looked very puzzled. I got a bit defensive: “I have worked hard for this degree from two schools, so I want to represent them both.”

I thought this would be the only graduation-related decision I’d have to make between my two schools — until I looked at the convocation schedule. Sure enough, both my ceremonies are at noon. Call it an identity crisis, but I am conflicted with which to attend. I originally associated with one school– the culture and the people, but in the last year I have gravitated toward the other. Sure, one is my “home school,” but that doesn’t mean I should choose its ceremony and its speaker and join that set of friends and peers to walk with. I am receiving Latin honors from both schools. My family is coming from Chicago, expecting me to walk at both convocations.

I asked an alumna, who graduated with the same dual, if she was able to attend both convocations last year. The answer was yes. I understand that for a school as big as SU, there are

going to be scheduling conflicts.

But I feel underappreciated.

Senior Meghan Rimol, a dual major at the same schools, shares my disappointment that the graduation schedule doesn’t allow her to celebrate her accomplishments in both programs. “Looking at the schedule, it seems that there are more accommodating options that could have been considered.

Both schools have been an essential part of my Syracuse experience, and picking one over the other feels unfair to the time and work that I’ve committed to be a part of both.”

I couldn’t agree more. And although it’s just a ceremony, and does not necessarily sum up my entire academic career, one of the thoughts that kept me going as a struggling dual was the ability to one day attend both ceremonies. The Interim Dean of the iSchool wrote to me and offered a possible solution: attend the ceremony for one school and the reception for another. This will still be a difficult decision for me I am proud of both my majors; there is no favorite. I just want to have my moment. Well, I want to have my two moments.

toner State Hillary Clinton in 2014 and Vice President Joe Biden in 2013. And for this year’s award ceremony, Gosselin was able to slate for the keynote speaker the top member of the Obama Administration: Obama himself.

“It just blows me away that he’s willing to speak at this event, and it’s a sign of respect — it’s a sign of respect for Syracuse, and it’s a sign of respect for Robin’s journalism home, The New York Times, but it’s a real sign of respect for her and … that incredible ability to love politicians and still cover them toughly and fairly,” Gosselin said.

There’s no real formula to how Gosselin has been able to secure such high-up politicians for the keynote speech. He said the process is scrambling, writing letters and meeting with friends who have connections.

And although the program is non-partisan and Gosselin reaches out to both Democrats and Republicans, a lot of those friends have connections on the Democratic side and within the Obama administration.

But, Gosselin said, “there are a million people who try to tug at the president’s sleeve and there are a million people who have stories to tell.” So he made his case in two parts: one that would appeal to the interest of the president’s staff and one that would attest to the personal side of Toner and Gosselin’s story.

“It’s not a bureaucratic process,” Gosselin said. “This is me asking people to hear me out on the subject of my wife.”

In his letter, Gosselin wrote that those in attendance at the Toner ceremony would be “a perfect audience” for Obama, in the final year of his presidency, to reflect on how journalists and people in communications have done — whether it be good or bad — over the last eight years. Obama, Gosselin said, would also be able to speak about what journalists can do to “heal our really ruptured politics.”

The personal case Gosselin pitched to the president’s staff was that, in 1983 or 1984, when Toner was a political reporter for The Atlanta Journal Constitution, she decided to cover not only the conventional presidential candidates but also travel through the Deep South with candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson

Toner’s coverage of Jackson shook up the Democratic Party enough to get the party to give Jackson a speaking role at the 1984 Democratic Convention, Gosselin said.

“Fast forward to 2008, I mean, Robin knew she was dying, but she really wanted to hang in to see what happened in the 2008 election, and I think in some way she thought it was the end of the era at the beginning of which she played some small role,” Gosselin said. “And it was really important to her to hang in there and to see the president elected.”

Following Toner’s death on Dec. 12, 2008, Gosselin said one of then-President-elect Obama’s first proclamations was in mourning for the late political reporter. Gosselin said Obama’s statement was probably thanks to Rahm Emanuel, who went on to

“America’s the place where we can’t afford crazy politics,” he said.

As Obama’s last term comes to an end, he said he’s reflecting on the current political climate in the country — how it’s gotten this “crazy” and how the tone of debate has gotten worse. Obama touched on similar themes in his State of the Union address earlier this year.

In 2009, when Obama had gone from president-elect to president, Gosselin recalled how his wife thought it was unfair political reporters were rarely respected in terms of awards. Gosselin, who did a lot of investigative reporting and came close to winning a Pulitzer, said Toner was “vastly the better writer and reporter,” but added that she never got anything for it.

“And that’s because a good political team is simply assumed,” Gosselin said. “… Any good news outlet is assumed to have a good political team. They’re just the workhouses.”

Gosselin reviewed all the recipients of the Pulitzer Prize and realized that, out of hundreds, only three Pulitzers at that point had been awarded for campaign coverage. The idea behind the Toner Prize, Gosselin said, was to try to right that wrong and recognize political reporters for the quality of their work.

“She loved politicians, just as long as they used their power to help people who couldn’t help themselves,” he said. “She didn’t care whether they were Republican or Democrat.

She just liked politics and she just didn’t think good political reporters got enough credit, so this is my way of trying to do something about that.” atorrens@syr.edu

He said the current state of politics, which he wanted to describe as “carnivallike” but wouldn’t because “that implies fun,” is corroding democracy and society.

“Some are more to blame than others,” he said. “But we are all responsible for reversing it.”

Journalists who hold politicians accountable and uncover the truth, Obama said, are part of the force that is making the current political climate better. Journalists asking tough questions, he said, makes the U.S. political system better so voters “don’t take politicians at their word.”

Obama said journalists help him do his job better and he’s “grateful” for that, even when he disagrees with them.

“Journalism at its best is indispensable … in the very concrete sense that real people depend on you to uncover the truth,” he said.

“That’s why deep reporting matters more than ever.”

All is not perfect in the media though, Obama said. The financial pressures of the journalism industry and the reality of working on social media sometimes causes journalists to “dumb down the news.” He added that no one will care who got the most retweets or likes in 100 years.

Experts on 1st woman combatant commander

or the first time in United States history, a woman has been nominated to head a combatant command. U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced on March 18 that Air Force Gen. Lori Robinson will lead the U.S. Northern Command if the nomination is approved by the Senate.

The Department of Defense divides the world into six different regions, and each is led by a fourstar general. Since earning her fourth star in 2014, Robinson has commanded the U.S. air forces in the Pacific. The promotion will make her in charge of U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), which is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and was created after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as a way to respond to domestic threats, according to The New York Times.

To get a perspective on the historic nomination, The Daily Orange interviewed via email Kristi Andersen, professor of political science and senior research associate at Syracuse University’s Campbell Public Affairs Institute, and Robin Riley, director of LGBT studies and an assistant professor of women’s and gender studies who specializes in gender, militarism and war at SU.

The Daily Orange: What does this nomina-

tion mean and why is it important?

Kristi Andersen: It’s the first time a woman has received this type of appointment. Because these commands … go to four-star generals or admirals, one important take-away here is that there are now women in these very high military positions. General Robinson was previously the commander of all U.S. air forces in the Pacific.

Robin Riley: I think anytime women get new

opportunities it’s good for all women. The road to promotion for women in the military — which has a large impact on women’s careers when they leave the military — had been closed prior to the lifting of the combat ban so this appointment is a sign that things are progressing for women both inside and outside the military.

The D.O.: Do you think the Senate will confirm

the nomination?

K.A.: There is no reason she shouldn’t be confirmed, except that the Senate has delayed many Obama appointees — including many judicial and ambassadorial appointments.

R.R.: I think usually these nominations go through without controversy and I would hope that the Senate would be aware that fighting this particular one would signal that sexism is alive and well in that body.

The D.O.: Since Defense Secretary Ash Carter opened up combat roles to women, has there been an influx of women in combat?

K.A.: This was only announced a few months ago. I doubt we would see much — if any — change in the numbers yet.

D.O.: If Robinson’s nomination is approved, how will this pave the way for other women to hold military leadership positions?

K.A.: Having more women in these (and other) leadership positions serves as positive demonstration and helps to break down resistance (which still exists in the military) to the idea of female leadership.

R.R.: Robinson’s appointment swings the door wide for women interested in joining the military to improve their life’s chances for economic opportunities and for those who seek military careers.

Student start-up gets 2nd place at SXSW competition

An app co-founded by a Syracuse University student was recently honored at the South

by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival in a competition for startup companies.

ChaChing, a peer-to-peer payment and money transfer application, won second place in the Student Startup Madness (SSM) tournament in Austin, Texas, on March 14.

ChaChing was co-founded by Seth Samowitz, a dual major at the School of Information Studies and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at SU. ChaChing is the first mobile keyboard application that allows users to send and receive money through all messaging applications, such as iMessage and Skype, Samowitz said.

Samowitz said sending money to friends should be as simple as texting someone.

Branagan said he hopes to encourage more college students to do something beyond campus and provide the opportunity for them to get in the spotlight.

Branagan said the startup competition began in December with 64 teams and narrowed in January to 32 teams. In the final round, the

Duszkiewicz, Brendel’s running mate, cited events such as United States Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to campus during the “It’s On Us” week as evidence that SU is fighting back against sexual violence. But, without outlining a concrete plan, he added that SU “needs to go a step further.”

Brosofsky said she’s happy that SU has embraced the “It’s On Us” campaign, but added that she and Mastoloni would work to ensure that leaders of all campus organizations be required to participate in training under New York state’s “Enough is Enough” law.

LaLonde agreed with Brosofsky and Duszkiewicz that SU is taking some of the right steps in addressing sexual assault.

“Entrepreneurial Eight” pitched business concepts to a panel of successful entrepreneurs, technologists and investors. ChaChing placed second out of those eight teams.

“The SXSW Interactive Festival is the epicenter of what is happening in the Internet, interactive digital media and every industry that is disrupting,” Branagan said. “The SXSW holds contests that are never ever going to be easy.”

Branagan said no team from SU made it into the final round in previous years.

This year SU had ChaChing and Fresh U, an online publication for freshmen, make it to the “Entrepreneurial Eight,” Branagan said.

“Syracuse has the highest number of applicants for the first time ever,” Branagan said. “This really helps because we are seeing the best of a more active campus.”

Samowitz said the market for peer-to-peer transfers is exploding. In 2015, 16 billion transactions were made on mobile devices.

“Syracuse is listening. We’re having a conversation,” she said. “But it’s not enough.”

LaLonde proposed moving the Counseling Center from frat row to a more visible place on campus and using the first-year forum to help students better understand the resources that are available to them on campus.

Evangelista and LaLonde also said they would build upon the initiatives that current SA President Aysha Seedat and Vice President Jane Hong have worked on, such as ensuring that Hong’s proposed bikesharing program gets implemented.

Samowitz previously worked for Square, a mobile payment company, which Khaund said helped him gain deep knowledge in the financial industry. Khaund said he appreciates Samowitz’s creativity and the domain expertise he has at a young age.

“He has a strong passion for startups and he’s got lots of great ideas,” said Michael D’Eredita, an assistant professor of practice in the iSchool who has taught Samowitz and often talks to him outside of class about startup ideas.

Samowitz said his team will launch the beta version of ChaChing in the coming weeks on iOS and Android devices. He said he hopes that ChaChing can become the leading peerto-peer payment application in the country. chchen@syr.edu

he daunting task of sending out job applications and finding housing after graduation no longer exists for the members of Out There Productions.

The video production company was started two years ago by advertising major Erin Miller, magazine journalism major Johnny Rosa and television, radio, and film major Losa Meru. Now, as seniors, the team is planning on taking Out There Productions to the road.

Inspired by the trends of #vanlife and tiny houses, Out There Productions is planning to buy a 30-person school bus. With over $8,000 dollars it has raised through a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, it will buy and renovate the bus to live and work in as they travel across the United States.

In September, it’ll begin its entrepreneurial excursion: producing promotional videos for startups nationwide.

“It’s sort of simultaneously the most terrifying thing and coolest thing I’ve done in my life,” Rosa said.

Between the three entrepreneurs, they create what they define as a NASAinspired team. They run on Miller’s enthusiasm for executing ideas, Rosa’s lust for travel and storytelling and Meru’s passion and technical knowledge of filmmaking. According to their website, Miller is the CAPCOM, or communicator; Rosa is the FLIGHT, or manager of the mission as a whole; and Meru is the Ground Control, or operations maintenance.

With a tagline of “We ascend together,” Miller explained that as OTPros grows, the interested client grows too.

They recognize that while they are entrepreneurs who work for entrepreneurs, they treat it as a community rather than a competition with other businesses.

Out There Productions doesn’t have any specific startups it’ll pursue in cities outside of Syracuse yet. However, it does have three sources of revenue: the Indiegogo campaign, potential sponsors that want product placement on its mobile bus and its sales.

While in Syracuse, Out There Productions has maintained a similar business model. The team made money over the past few years by producing videos for other Syracuse startups. One of their clients is EB Active sportswear, which produces light-up activewear jackets for the safety of late-night runners and was founded by Gabriela Escalante.

“What I admire the most about OTPros is their excitement to make great videos and their willingness to go that extra mile,” Escalante said. “When filming our video, OTPros not only helped us with the video itself but also with finding the right words to communicate our message.”

Essentially, they are allwhite Adidas sneakers with 3-stripes JACKIE and the Stan HOMAN Smith logo PROBA BLY W EA R ING in green PA JA M AS detailing on the back.

Somehow, it seems that these white sneakers have taken over the fashion world.

The Stan Smiths, along with the similar and also popular Adidas Superstar sneakers with black zigzag 3-stripes, aren’t being worn to run or hit the gym.

These sneakers, for the most part, are purely for style. Around campus and around the world, people are wearing them out with jeans, nice tops and even dresses.

While this seems fresh and different, sneakers as fashion is not a new trend.

Wedge sneakers, although now widely regarded as hideous, dominated in 2013. “Normcore,” a term in the fashion world for basically dressing plain and normal to be chic, led to a sneaker-filled 2014 and 2015.

In addition to these fleeting trends, Converse and Vans seem to be timeless, always appearing in fashion in some way or another — although white Vans even more so recently, thanks to “Damn, Daniel.”

So is the all-white sneaker becoming the next wedge sneaker, short-lived and later regretted?

Some in the fashion world are already wondering if it will die.

Fashion writer Alison Syrett suggested in an article for the popular blog Man Repeller that the oversaturation of sneakers in fashion has made the style stale.

When everyone is wearing them, they lose their power.

Syrett also wrote that she wishes she could wear her sneakers in a neutral way as she did before. Now, wearing sneakers suggests that she is trying to pull off a certain “look.”

This is the same problem that occurs with plenty of trends in fashion — once the styles hit the masses, they aren’t as cool anymore.

First, the sneaker trend was worn by bloggers and editors and influencers and it seemed unique and exciting. But when every college student, high school student

Answers to life’s biggest, most difficult questions are revealed

ovely readers, I know that we all want to know what on Earth is going on in this crazy world we live in. Life is crazy. We all have questions. I have answers.

When I began this column, I set out to make a difference. I wanted change, so I bought a Kit-Kat at CVS with a twenty-dollar bill. I tried to use the eighteen dollars and some cents leftover toward installing a ball pit in Schine, but politics got in the way. What I mean by that is, I started watching the new season of “House of Cards” and completely forgot about Schining those balls.

So, answering the difficult questions of life it is. I hope these bring some clarity to your existence on this planet, since you’re only a speck of nothingness in the universe anyway. Try to remember that the next time you go on Yik Yak.

It can be hard to keep up with trends when they go by so fast. As for now, all-white sneakers are the latest thing at Syracuse, even though there’s no way of saying how long they’ll last.

If you want to skip the trend, treat your feet to some fancy flats. And if you’re really trying to go for the opposite of sporty, heels are always an option. Heeled mules — a slip-on style — were all over the spring 2016 runways, in particular.

If you still want to embrace the sporty style for as long as possible, go ahead and own it. Even if they go out of style quickly, they’ve got one great thing going for them: you can always wear them to the gym afterwards.

enim is a fabric that has stood the test of time, both literally and figuratively. The classic indigo textile hasn’t gone out of style since its emergence in the 19th century, which isn’t something many other trendy pieces can say. Denim has had several claims to fame, from James Dean’s timeless mid-’50s white tee-and-jeans pairing to Justin and Britney’s full denim ensembles at the 2001 American Music Awards.

Thanks to the innovations of fashion, there are constantly more new and exciting ways you can wear denim, especially when your typical denim jacket, jeans or overalls have become a bit bland. Here are just a few novel denim styles that’ll shake up and modernize your wardrobe.

The Printed Shorterall Bring your typical overalls up a notch by ditching the typical blue shade and full pant leg. This pastel, oil slick-printed pair from Urban Outfitters is perfect for any spring outing, whether you’re hitting up a music festival or just chilling on the quad with your friends.

For those slightly more chilly days you can wear your shorteralls with a long-sleeve top (Brandy Melville), black turtleneck or some tights to warm things up. The Tar Heels have beaten the Orange twice this season, but the only matchup between the teams that matters anymore is the upcoming one, which will send either SU or UNC to the NCAA Championship game.

1. What would Syracuse have to do to beat North Carolina?

Sam Blum: We’ve seen Syracuse play

North Carolina twice this year and it got beaten two different ways. The first time was a late run when the Orange couldn’t keep the ball out of the high post, leading to many easy dunks. The second, Syracuse didn’t play nearly as efficient on offense, but hung around in the categories that it needed to hang around in. If SU wants to get the upset win, it needs to force UNC to take perimeter shots — the Tar Heels really struggle with that. SU has to hang in on the rebounding battle and another monster effort from Malachi Richardson is tough for any team to handle.

Jesse Dougherty: Defend the short corner, plain and simple. In the Sweet 16, Syracuse was torched by Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer in that spot and then Virginia’s Mike Tobey was similarly effective from there albeit in a different way. North Carolina has a few players who can thrive in that spot — namely Brice Johnson and Isaiah Hicks — and the Orange zone will break down early and often if it doesn’t keep a close eye on the short corner. Hicks is the biggest problem here, as he repeatedly battered SU inside during its Jan. 9 meeting in the Carrier Dome to help UNC pull away in dunking fashion.

Matt Schneidman: In short, a lot. But that was the case against another topseeded ACC opponent and Syracuse was able to pull off the upset. This time, the Orange will have to slow down a scorching hot Marcus Paige and the four big men who have scored a combined 105 points in two matchups against SU this season.

That would be the versatile Justin Jackson, the brutes (Hicks and Kennedy Meeks) and the sparkplug, Johnson. That’s a team that scores a lot of points, more than Virginia, and more than any team Syracuse has managed to keep to 62 points or less in its first four Tournament games. The zone will have to be airtight, not like the opening half against the Cavaliers, and limit the high-low attack it fell victim to against Gonzaga and UVA.

2. Are the two previous matchups encouraging or discouraging and why?

S.B.: I would definitely say they’re

encouraging, because they were both winnable. SU just ran out of steam in the first game, but was equal or better than UNC for 35 minutes. If Michael Gbinije decides to take a 3 instead of driving to the basket late in that second game, it might have had a different result. The mere fact that the Orange kept it close on the road is a testament to how possible this win actually is.

And it’s always hard to beat a team three times in one season.

J.D.: I would lean toward encouraging, especially since Syracuse was one glaring

defensive adjustment away from sticking with the Tar Heels in the Carrier Dome and then was within one possession in the final minute at the Dean E. Smith Center in late March. It wouldn’t be a futile argument to call the Tar Heels the best team in the country, and the fact that the Orange twice played them close gives me reason to believe that it could keep this game close. And in March, sometimes that’s all you need to do before the end of the game writes itself.

M.S.: Syracuse was in both contests late against the Tar Heels this season, but the Orange wasn’t able to clear the hump as it did against Virginia on Sunday. It’s encouraging that SU has proven it can hang with North Carolina, one of the best offensive teams in the country, but close isn’t enough in March. The discouraging part has been how UNC’s frontcourt has dominated the Orange in both matchups, especially Johnson. If Tyler Roberson and Tyler Lydon allow 17 rebounds to one frontcourt beast like Gonzaga’s Domantas Sabonis, the Orange could be in for a real treat once you add on Hicks and Meeks to the best frontcourt left in the NCAA Tournament.

3. What was the most impressive part of Syracuse’s win over Virginia?

S.B.: Usually it’s really tough for SU to

get wins if only one player does well — see: Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse in February. But that was the case on Sunday. It came back against a team that is impossible to come back against. It changed tempo on a team that controls it to a tee. Those are very impressive aspects of the SU win. To be dead in the water and be staring at the end of the season, only to have one player put the team on their back and carry SU to a win? That speaks volumes about what is possible for the Orange as it heads to Houston this week for the Final Four.

J.D.: The way Syracuse’s wings worked around weak-side flare screens to close out on corner shooters ... Just kidding. It was that damn comeback. How could it be anything else? The way the Orange tricked Virginia into playing at warp speed was especially impressive, especially when a few slowed-down possessions is probably what separates the Cavaliers from coasting to an easy win.

But that’s not what happened. Not even close, and SU rode mayhem to what Jim Boeheim called the best comeback of his coaching career.

M.S.: This one is pretty simple and it’s a one-word answer, Richardson. The freshman has responded well to low-scoring first halves this season, but Sunday was a different animal. He singlehandedly kept the Orange afloat with gutsy shot after gutsy drive after gutsy pull-up in the face of arguably the country’s best defender in Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon. He certainly didn’t play like a freshman in tying his season high with 23 points against the same team his previous high came against, but Syracuse should hope it doesn’t have to rely on mostly one player to carry it down the stretch against a team that can push the tempo equally as fast, or even much faster, than Syracuse did to disrupt Virginia. Syracuse has fallen behind early twice in the past two games, and it may need a second-half-esque showing from Richardson right out of the gat against North Carolina on Saturday.

Teams followed him out to the perimeter.

They pounded the ball in his direction down low. Physically inferior to almost everyone he guarded, Lydon received criticism from Jim Boeheim that he wasn’t physically ready after Isaiah Hicks and Brice Johnson tore through the Orange’s frontcourt in the Carrier Dome.

Then there was the critique, from Boeheim, teammates and himself, of his hesitation from the field when he’d pass up wide-open shots for simple passes.

Lydon couldn’t use his weight to manhandle centers, and he had to shed his stutter from the field. The versatility had faded midseason, was re-discovered down the stretch and had to find a way to carry over into a postseason that the Orange isn’t supposed to still be playing in.

Those ways came in the form of stepping out to where he normally wouldn’t and blocking a floater that saved Syracuse’s season. Or forcing Gill into a travel on a 2-on-1 with 8:17 left that allowed SU to slice its deficit to single digits on

fouls and SU head coach Quentin Hillsman chose to leave her in the game.

Three seconds later, Fondren fouled a Tennessee player after the inbounds pass and this time, Hillsman quickly plucked Brittney Sykes off the bench to replace her.

“We had to continue to play our team. We had to continue to play our roster and get our regular rotations,” Hillsman said of why he left Fondren in after her third foul. “… I just took a chance to get her in the game.

“She came through. She didn’t commit another foul. She was really, really big for us.”

As a contributor to both Syracuse’s frontcourt and backcourt this year, Fondren once again proved her value on a Syracuse team that consistently relies on its bench. She helped SU finish out the win, something she hopes to do twice more this season.

“We’re not ready to go home,” Fondren said. “We’re just taking it game by game, remain humble, finishing it out.”

“She’s a really good defender, player.

As efficient as Fondren was, foul trouble caught up to her when she committed backto-back fouls within the final six seconds of the third quarter. The first came when Fondren tried to deflect a Diamond DeShields mid-range jump shot. After the whistle blew, Fondren slapped her hands together signaling that she got the ball and not DeShields.

But regardless of the antics she had after the play, there was no way of reversing her three

“Tyler Lydon made a couple great plays in the back of (the press) to stop them in a 2-on1 situation,” Boeheim said, “and we finally got our offense.”

Then pulling a quick trigger and hitting a 3-pointer against UVA to cut Syracuse’s deficit to three less than two minutes later.

And finally hauling in a rebound with less than 10 seconds left over Gill and Malcolm Brogdon, an individual feat against two opponents normally coming from Roberson, but

one the freshman did to all but secure a Final Four spot after Roberson fouled out.

“He looks like a lightweight fighting heavyweight,” assistant coach Mike Hopkins said, “and at the end of the day, no one’s really been able to really hurt him down there.”

After his block against Gonzaga, Lydon elevated and hit the ground with the ball in his hands before hitting two foul shots. Following his rebound against Virginia, Lydon elevated and hit the ground with the ball in his hands before hitting another two foul shots. Both

plays that will barely show up in a box score, but ones that may be the difference between the Orange heading to Houston or staying home.

And one final time before Syracuse left the court at the United Center, Lydon elevated before coming back down on two feet. No foul shots were needed. No game needed to be sealed. This time, it was up a ladder to cut down the net and then back down.

Tyler Lydon doesn’t star, but he steps up when it matters most

HICAGO – Even if the shoe fit, there was no time to put it on. Tyler Lydon’s left sneaker squirted off his foot and he couldn’t look back at it before Michael Gbinije swung a pass to his right and into the wide-open freshman’s hands.

Isaiah Wilkins left the double team on Gbinije and darted to his left before soaring through the air. Lydon sold Wilkins on a pump fake before taking a dribble to his left and sinking a 3 with his white and orange sock still sliding across the floor. Gbinije threw Lydon’s shoe out of bounds against the outside of the scorer’s table and Lydon backpedaled the other way, pointing to his shoeless foot and barking at a referee for some sort of reprieve so he didn’t have to guard Anthony Gill with his sneaker three-quarters of the way down the other end of the court.

“You can’t stop playing in that situation so I was like, ‘Why not?’”

Lydon said. “I think that was like the first 3 I’d made since the first game.”

It was a relatively insignificant bucket that cut Syracuse’s deficit to nine with 2:24 remaining in the first half against Virginia, but it was just about the last possible thing Lydon hadn’t done yet this season.

He’s proved to be efficient from deep. He’s turned a hesitancy from the field into an ability to pump fake and finish at the rim. He’s hung with the big boys and blossomed into a reliable rebounder, often opposing centers that have far more

bulk than the lanky freshman.

On Sunday, his 11 points and six rebounds were heavily masked by a 21-point second half from fellow freshman Malachi Richardson. Lydon has rarely played the star. That’s left Gbinije, sometimes Richardson and even Trevor Cooney and Tyler Roberson on occasion. But in No. 10 seed Syracuse’s (23-13, 9-9 Atlantic Coast) 68-62 upset of top-seeded Virginia (29-8, 13-5), the supporting role embodying efficiency and timely plays on both ends down the stretch fit seamlessly into the narrative of Lydon’s season that may still not have reached its peak.

Cornelia Fondren’s aggressiveness pays off for Syracuse

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — One of the only things Cornelia Fondren couldn’t do on Sunday was cut down the net with ease. Before the final buzzer sounded, though, Fondren gave Syracuse the lift off the bench that has made the Orange dangerous all season.

She got to the basket when she wanted to. She knocked down every field goal she took. And as Tennessee focused on other scoring threats, Fondren made the most of her chances.

“Cornelia attacked us,” Volunteers head coach Holly Warlick

said. “Obviously when you’re concerned with (Brianna) Butler and (Alexis) Peterson, then you open it up a little bit. She drove to the basket and did a great job.”

No. 4 seed SU (29-7, 13-3 Atlantic Coast) advanced to its first Final Four in program history with an 89-67 win over No. 7 seed UT (22-14, 8-8 Southeastern) on Sunday partly because of Fondren’s aggressiveness, which resulted in 13 points in 19 minutes.

It took just 31 seconds after subbing in to impose her will on the Vols’ defense.

“I just wanted to attack and get to the basket,” Fondren said. “I felt like no one could stop me if I tried

to go to the basket.”

The senior guard took advantage of a mismatch she expected entering the game. Tennessee’s 6-foot-2 Bashaara Graves was matched up on the 5-foot-8 Fondren. Though Graves is bigger, Fondren used her quick burst to drive past her. Originally a point guard, Fondren was more than comfortable dribbling the ball.

Fondren made her biggest play of the game with 1:34 left in the third quarter. Again she attacked the hoop and this time made the basket while also drawing a foul.
