Every Syracuse University school and college, as well as SUNY-ESF, will host individual convocation ceremonies for their graduating seniors. An overall commencement ceremony will be held Sunday in the Carrier Dome.

The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs convocation for graduate students will take place on Friday, May 10, at 10 a.m. at Hendricks Chapel. A reception will follow in the Maxwell Hall Hoyer, which is located on the first floor of Maxwell, according to the SU commencement website.

The School of Architecture will host the graduation of its seniors in Crouse College’s Setnor Auditorium at 10 a.m. on Saturday. There will be a reception following the ceremony in Slocum Hall’s atrium, according to the website.

The College of Arts and Sciences’ undergraduate convocation will take place in the Dome on Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates A, B and E will open at 7 a.m. Various receptions will be held on the Quad after the convocation, according to the website.

always been present, Kristof said in an interview, from working as an editor of an eighth-grade newspaper to contributing to The Harvard Crimson during his undergraduate education at Harvard University. While attending law school at Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship, he wrote and sold articles to fund his independent — and cheap — travel plans.

Since this first foray into international reporting, Kristof has lived on four continents, reported on six and traveled to more than 150 countries, according to his biography on The New York Times’ website.

DPS to increase security for all graduation events

This year’s commencement ceremony will differ from years past in that it will have involve increased security and appeal to a broader audience.

The Department of Public Safety will heighten security procedures for Syracuse University’s commencement at the Carrier Dome on Sunday.

“The decision to heighten security at commencement was made partly because of the recent Boston [bombings],” said John Sardino, DPS associate chief. “We will still be following standard national security procedures, so we will be checking bags and [using metal detectors] for guests that come into the Dome.”

Since the university doesn’t limit the number of guests each graduate is allowed to bring into the Dome, attendants are not allowed to bring bags larger than 10 inches

by 10 inches. This will allow DPS to minimize crowds near security checkpoints, said Susan Germain, executive director of SU’s Office of Special Events.

Security will also be present at the other convocation venues on campus, Sardino said. He recommended that guests arrive early to commencement so they can move quickly through the security checkpoints.

The planning for this year’s commencement began the day after last year’s commencement. The procedures were planned in conjunction with the two senior marshals, Stephanie Kranz and Kishauna Soljour. SU’s maintenance services also assisted in the planning, Germain said.

In addition to increased security, the commencement ceremony is expanding its reach.

Dialogue needed between university administrators, community On April 3, I wrote a letter to The Daily Orange in which I expressed disappointment that Syracuse University faculty had unilaterally taken down the controversial “white privilege” billboard downtown. That letter was based on the limited information available at that time, primarily a brief press statement by Transmedia Chair Heath Hanlin. It has since come to my attention that it was not, as the statement expressed, university faculty who opposed the billboard; it was rather opposed by the community in which the billboard was placed. Unfortunately, not a lot of information has been made public about the affair.

As such, I would like to apologize for that letter and take responsibility for writing it too hastily.

I support the university’s decision to respond to the community’s demand promptly.

What is needed now, however, is a dialogue about 1) how the implementation of the bill-

LETTER TO THE EDITOR board was actually an act of white privilege and 2) how the university can move forward in truly working with the diverse local community here, of which I consider myself a part. My main concern expressed in the letter — that dialogue about white privilege and racism has to be sustained — still stands.

The community has taken the task of organizing such a dialogue, which will take place this Thursday at 5:30 at the Dunbar Community Center. I hope that university administrators, faculty and students make the effort to come and listen to the community’s concerns and learn how we can work with — and not apart from — the community.

Despite college memories, best times yet to come postgrad

W

ith commencement upon us and loved ones showering us with gifts like really nice pens, watches and that one Dr. Seuss book — by the way, to weird aunts everywhere: most original graduation gift ever — I’ve been thinking a lot about the past four years, just like every other senior.

I’ve been thinking about how soonto-be grads repeatedly say that these four years were the best of their lives, and that once you turn 22, it’s just a big, old downward spiral into depression, responsibility and no fun.

So if this is essentially the end of our collective lives, I figured I’d make my bucket list of failure — things we were all supposed to do at Syracuse University, but we never got to accomplish.

First and foremost: I only just discovered Roly Poly this semester. I only went to Syra-Juice last week. I know, I know — what a waste of four years without that delicious establishment in my life. I’d like to have a do-over on that one.

I never took part in the annual humans vs. zombies Nerf gun battle in the spring. Wait, actually, I’m proud of that particular fact. Never mind.

I never went to a lacrosse game. I think I’m the only person in the Central New York area who really has no idea how that sport works. Isn’t there something about an X? Were we good in the X this year?

I never got in a fight, which will please my mother to no end when she reads this. I should have just suckerpunched someone at Chuck’s Café one night, just to see what would happen.

Then I’d really know what it means to feel alive.

I never sledded down the Crouse College hill on a dining hall tray in the middle of a snowstorm.

I never knew the love of a real woman.

Just kidding, I wanted to see if you guys were still reading.

world on a string Googling me, I never drank underage nor did I know anyone at Syracuse who took part in any illegal activities.

No sir. Not me. I find such practices to be reprehensible. If I ever saw any minors consuming alcohol, I would immediately report them to the authorities.

I hate degenerate youths and their loud devil’s music.

Seriously, though, I did actually sit down a few times and try to think of the little things I missed out on during my time at SU. Now that our university era is coming to a close, everyone is hell-bent on ensuring they got the “full college experience” before they leave.

But as I tried to think about all of the things I forgot to do, the activities I never participated in and the events I didn’t attend, I found myself coming up with much better memories that have been made since 2009.

I remembered way more good times than regrets. I don’t have too many regrets, to be honest.

And while you’re sitting and listening to some speaker say how commencement is “an end, but also a beginning” on Sunday, I think you’ll find that you don’t have a lot of regrets, either.

We did a pretty good job, guys.

So look, for those of you freaking out about facing the real world, our lives aren’t ending. Rumors about our post-grad deaths are greatly exaggerated. The best is yet to come, I guarantee it.

Oh, and hi, Mom! Thanks a bunch!

Graduates should continue to follow passions Despite statistics that show a recent stagnant hiring period among college graduates and less interest from employers toward liberal arts majors, Class of 2013 graduates should continue to pursue careers they are passionate about.

An April report from the National Association of College and Employers anticipated a 2.1-percent increase in the hiring of college graduates. The organization also reports that employers are more interested in hiring graduates with professionally oriented majors like business, as opposed to those in the liberal arts.

Students in the Class of 2013 should pursue a job that makes them happy. A career path that does not begin with contentment — regardless of the paycheck — may not end with it.

Extracurricular activities and other undergraduate experiences can assist individuals in acquiring skills attractive to employers.

However, postgrad plans do depend on the individual and his or her plans after graduation. Those who plan to settle down immediately after might choose job stability instead of fulfillment in a field they are passionate about.

Regardless of a postgrad’s decision, the arduous process of job-hunting should not deter graduates from chasing a potential lifelong dream or job he or she hopes to have one day.

But graduates must be realistic, no matter their postgrad plans or college major. In addition to taking chances within their chosen field, graduates must balance these risks with an understanding of other industries, which could give them a well-rounded outlook and fall-back option that could help them compete in the job market.

Graduates facing the current economic state should remember this is just the beginning and must therefore be patient. Many jobs for recent college grads starting out in the market might not offer them their dream lifestyle or a large paycheck. However, that job could provide experience that might help them attain their ideal career.

Success is possible, but it will take time to reach a stable job that also grants satisfaction.

Despite economy, job market improves for graduating class

The job outlook for graduating seniors in the Class of 2013 appears to be better than last year, though just by a little bit.

“Employers we work with tend to be more optimistic about the hiring this year,” said Mike Cahill, director of Syracuse University Career Services.

A survey released by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, a nonprofit organization that assesses the employment outlook for college graduates, said companies participating in the study expect to hire about 2.1 percent more college graduates from the Class of 2013. The survey was done from Feb. 11 to March 27 and is based on the responses of 196 employers such as Macy’s Inc., Coca-Cola Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp.

In fall 2012, NACE released a survey saying companies planned to hire 13 percent more college graduates. The fall and spring projections aren’t a perfect comparison because the surveys don’t have the same respondents, said Andrea Koncz, employment information manager for NACE. This decrease is consistent with job reports that show growth is less than anticipated, but

employers still say they plan to increase hiring, according to the survey.

“We’re still saying it’s a positive outlook,” Koncz said.

“You really have to go out and make connections with people. If you think you might want to work in a retail sales environment, you try to connect with people actually doing that.”

increasing existing workers’ hours.

“The economy still hasn’t fully recovered since the great recession,” he said.

In April, the unemployment rate in the United States was 7.5 percent, down 0.4 percent from January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Dutkowsky said the unemployment rate hovers at about 5.5 percent in a fully recovered economy.

Yet Dutkowsky said college graduates still have an advantage in the workplace compared to people who only have a high school diploma.

On average, college graduates make almost double the amount of money and have a substantially lower unemployment rate.

Graduates should enter the job market as soon as possible, Dutkowsky stressed, even if a job seems “below them.” This way, graduates are able to show companies they have the skill set to succeed, and can get a better idea of what they want to pursue for a career, he said.

Not all projections for the Class of 2013 are positive. According to an April 10 brief from the Economic Policy Institute, a nonprofit and nonpartisan think tank, “the prospects for young high school and college graduates remain dim.”

One section of the brief focused on college graduates ages 21-24 who don’t have an advanced

degree and aren’t enrolled in further schooling.

The 2013 unemployment rate for this group sits at about 8.8 percent. The underemployment rate — or part-time workers who want full-time work — is about 18.3 percent, according to the brief.

The institute states in the brief that the outcomes for the Class of 2013 aren’t known yet, and that the economy is slowly improving.

Cahill, director of SU Career Services, said using resources such as SU alumni to research certain fields and build connections could boost graduates’ chances.

This proactive search, as opposed to simply responding to job postings, helps graduates find jobs, even in a weak market, he said.

“You really have to go out and make connections with people,” he said. “If you think you might want to work in a retail sales environment, you try to connect with people actually doing that.”

An individual graduate can increase the chance of getting a job by being persistent and preparing for a more extensive search than he or she would like it to be, he said.

Said Cahill: “It’s not a pessimistic world out there for the college grad.”

2013 graduates to stay in Syracuse for jobs, stability

Since his sophomore year, Dan Cowen knew he would stay in Syracuse after graduation.

Cowen, a senior political science and policy studies major, came to Syracuse University from Massachusetts in 2011, and immediately knew he wanted to become a part of the community.

“I fell in love with the people that make up the city,” Cowen said. “Interacting with them during my freshman and sophomore year made me excited to become one of them.”

Cowen is just one of many SU students who will graduate this weekend, and have chosen to live in Syracuse to begin their post-college life.

After graduation, Cowen said, many students choose to move to large cities to pursue their dream jobs. But Cowen said he believes Syracuse has the potential to be a city with opportunities for young people, with the added

“When you graduate and go straight to a big city, you’re competing for entry-level jobs with thousands of other graduates. It’s really tough to work your way up,” Cowen said. “Staying in Syracuse, your rent is cheaper, there’s less competition for jobs and the city is small enough to build strong connections to help grow your business.”

Cowen is currently campaigning for the position of common councilor at-large for the 2013

election. As a part of his campaign, Cowen is encouraging students to stay in Syracuse after graduation.

Sarah Walton, a senior policy studies and geography major, also plans to stay in Syracuse after graduation. Walton secured a job as director of operations at the Syracuse Northeast Community Center, and said her experiences at SU will help her transition into living in the city of Syracuse.

“It seems foolish to look around other cities to find something I can find right here in Syracuse,” she said. “The connections you make here in four years can go a long way.”

Some students choose to stay in Syracuse as a part of SU’s Fifth Year Engagement Fellowship, which offers graduates networking opportunities, jobs and mentors with Syracuse businesses. The program aims to keep newly graduated alumni in Syracuse to help contribute to the community.

Mike Smith was awarded the grant last year as a senior. Now, as a graduate student in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Smith said he plans to continue to reside in the city after completing his degree.

He said he believes staying in Syracuse after graduation is a good transitional stage for students because it helps them mature and adapt to the real world.

“Staying in Syracuse is beneficial because you have four years to build connections and opportunities here. I wanted to make the best use of it,” he said.

Michelle Gaston, a senior communication and rhetorical studies major, also received a grant from the school to stay an extra year. Gaston will continue to take classes at SU as a graduate student, while also interning for local businesses and pursuing entrepreneurial interests.

Gaston said she hopes staying in Syracuse after graduation will allow her to challenge herself by living miles away from her home in San Francisco.

Said Gaston: “There’s a really negative and inaccurate stereotype of students who are staying here, but realistically, it’s a growing community. The more involved I become, the more I realize I like it here.” alng@syr.edu

Senior gift committee’s ongoing efforts result in more donations

This year’s donations to the Syracuse University Senior Class Giving Campaign have exceeded the number of donations received last year due to changes within the campaign.

A committee of 12 students worked to get the word out about the campaign, also known as the Class Act. The campaign’s goal is to obtain 198 donations by graduation. As of Tuesday night, the committee received 176 donations.

Last year, the campaign received 138 donations.

“It’s fantastic to see that the support of the seniors has gone up,” said Kristen Duggleby, assistant director of leadership annual giving. “We have definitely exceeded the amount raised last year, and not only are students giving more, but they also started giving earlier.”

The gifts can fund several causes, all of which aim to better the university. The donations can help fund guest speakers, student awards that pay for travel and conferences, and budgets for student organizations, according to the campaign’s website.

Donations are necessary because people often underestimate the costs of running an institution the size of SU, said Jesse Feitel, a committee member. The donations help fund activities outside of the classroom.

The final deadline for donations is June 30, Duggleby said.

The donation process is completed through the campaign’s website, and is relatively flexible in the way it allows students to specify how much they want to donate. The donation form also includes a write-in option for where the donor wants the money to go.

Donors who gave $20.13 or more were given the opportunity to be guests at a donors appreciation event held in April in the Carrier Dome’s Club 44. However, the committee accepts donations of any amount.

The appreciation event was one of the campaign’s more effective incentives, drawing a lot of donations in the weeks leading up to it, said Julie Deutsch, another committee member. She added that an advantage to the campaign is that when students are dissatisfied with how the university distributes funds, they can use the donation to ensure attention to a specific cause.

their questions, said Feitel. He added that this approach was harder to ignore than emails and Facebook posts because it better addressed students’ concerns about where the money will go, as well as how much student activity depends on it.

The committee also promoted the campaign through social media and tabling in the Schine Student Center. Additionally, committee members posted a video about the campaign online.

Feitel said committee members do not push students to donate when they’re not able to do so financially, but emphasized that a lot of student activities are funded by these donations.

“It’s really, really hard to ask people for money,” he said. “Twenty dollars really is for some people a big amount, and we understand that.”

The committee is tracking the campaign’s progress through the number of donations, rather than dollar amounts, Feitel said. The main focus is to get students in the habit of giving back to the university.

In 2001, Kristof switched from foreign correspondent to columnist. Although he long had an interest in writing a column, he said, Thomas Friedman served as the foreign affairs columnist.

“I didn’t quite see how I would become a columnist unless a meteorite came down and whacked Tom, and I didn’t want that to happen,” Kristof said.

said, the increased interest in international affairs made adding a second international columnist reasonable.

The transition was difficult at first. Kristof, who described himself as “not the naturally the most opinionated person in the room,” said he often revised his columns at the advice of his wife to take a stronger stance on the topic. But he said he loves writing for the op-ed page and the freedom it gives him to report on issues he cares about.

“I have this amazing spotlight and I can shine it on neglected issues in a way that will help project them onto the global agenda,” he said. “And once that happens, they’re more

likely to get addressed.”

For example, the increased recognition of the challenges faced by women in developing countries can be attributed, in part, to Kristof’s work, said Catherine Bertini, former executive director of the World Food Programme and former United Nations under-secretary-general for management.

“I’ve seen more community reaction and support for women and girls in part because of the stories and the issues that they learned about from reading Kristof,” said Bertini, who is also a professor of practice in public administration and international affairs at SU. Policy makers often quote Kristof when promoting programs that address the issues he highlights in his columns, she added.

Bertini also spoke on a panel with Kristof in New York City several years ago about world hunger, she said.

Kristof has done more to change the world for the better than any other journalist, said Alex Jones, director of the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard. Kristof received a Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from the center in March, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field.

“His column is one that is almost always rooted in trying to foment action on behalf of people who are in desperate need of it and takes on neglected causes,” Jones said.

Kristof is willing to put himself in risky situations and dangerous areas to cover these issues, he said.

“I think he is someone who really puts his money where his mouth is,” Jones said. “The work that journalists sometimes do from a distance, he does close up.”

Currently, Kristof is taking a break from his column to work on a book with his wife about how to make a difference in the world. He already has in mind a long list of places from which he’d like to report: Syria, Burma, China, Latin America.

things to check off your SU to-do list before leaving campus

The moment all seniors have been waiting for — or dreading — is finally here: graduation.

But before leaving Syracuse University’s campus for good and stepping into the real world, there are a handful of iconic campus traditions to check off of our SU Senior Bucket List.

1. Take a picture with Otto

No other campus has an orange for a mascot, so live it up. All pictures with Otto are frame-worthy. Take it with family or friends, but let’s face it, your friends feel just as much — if not more — like your family now, too.

2. Write your name in Chuck’s Cafe

Now is the time. Follow your fellow alumni and write your name somewhere on the walls of Chuck’s Cafe, a bar you’re probably going to miss frequenting during the wee hours of the morning. Use paint, permanent markers or crayons to write your name on the wall, table or even an empty pitcher of beer. It’s all been done before. Leave your mark and leave a little piece of yourself in SU history.

3. Do the Dome stomp

Chances are, your freshman-year resident adviser brought your floor on a field trip to do the Dome stomp — and you haven’t been back since. Relive those glory days of hearing your stomp reverberate up the cement walls just one last time, but this time, in your cap and gown after commencement.

4. Throw a Frisbee on the Quad

College campuses and Frisbees go together like peanut butter and jelly. It’s an iconic college game. And on a sunny day, the Quad is filled with students throwing around the disc. Take advantage of it, and blame it on the wind if the Frisbee doesn’t go exactly where you intended.

5. Kiss on the Kissing Bench

One of SU’s oldest traditions is filled with love: Kiss your loved one on the bench on the west lawn of the Hall of Languages and you’re destined to be together for the rest of your lives. Graduation weekend might be your last chance for this opportunity, so don’t miss it. It could change your future.

Twin brothers graduate with architecture degrees, prepare for life apart after college

anner and Weston Halkyard swear it was sheer coincidence that they ended up at the same university. They both applied to a number of other colleges, and their parents never pushed them to be a part of the same program or school.

“We were actually separated into two different rooms when we were deciding on the schools that we were going to,” Weston said.

Tanner agreed and said, “It was really just random happenstance that we ended up picking the same one, and the same major.”

The program of choice was the School of Architecture’s five-year undergraduate program at Syracuse University. Now, after five years of enduring all-nighters, making dozens of models and fretting about reviews, twins Tanner and Weston will graduate this weekend with SU’s Class of 2013, then head off to different cities to begin new jobs and live apart from each other.

Tanner and Weston grew up in the small town of Montague in Western Massachusetts.

As kids, they didn’t have access to cable or Internet, a factor that forced them to spend time together playing outside or being creative.

The two played a lot of sports and took up drawing in their free time. What started out of a necessity to entertain themselves became a habit — then a passion.

It was their mutual love for art that later influenced their college decisions.

“We originally didn’t know we wanted to do architecture, but we were really art-oriented in high school,” Tanner said. “That was kind of a start to becoming an architecture student. You can make stuff with your hands and draw, and that’s kind of what we like to do anyway.”

The two visited SU as a last-minute addition to their list of potential-colleges . They loved the campus and the architecture program, and both ended up choosing it as their top school.

Though the twins were surprised by

their mutual choice, their father, Daniel Halkyard, wasn’t.

“The fact that they both chose that program is really not unusual,” he said. “They’ve done so many things together throughout growing up, it seems natural that they would do that.”

The Halkyard twins have never regretted their choice to attend the same college. In both their shared experiences and separate lives, the two have loved every minute at SU. “I love Syracuse. I don’t know any other experience, but I can honestly say this has been the best five years of my life,” Weston said.

In the last five years at SU, Weston and Tanner have shared a handful of adventures.

Together they survived the first year of architecture. They spent sleepless nights in the studio, racing to finish projects. They traveled across Europe while abroad in Florence, Italy.

On Halloween, they dressed as the Winklevoss twins from “The Social Network.”

And just a week ago, they completed their

most important adventure yet: presenting their final theses to complete their undergraduate studies.

“It probably made it better to experience that all together,” Tanner said. “You’re not going through it alone. You know that if your twin can get through it, clearly you can get through it.”

And though all of that time together might drive some siblings crazy, Tanner and Weston used their similarities to fuel their competitive sides, which led them to be more productive and successful.

“Everything gets to be competitive,” Tanner said. “A lot of times, it’s fun because there’s this person that’s always pushing you to be better.”

Weston added, though, that they often competed to separate themselves.

“We grew up with this mental notion that we were this one thing or unit to everyone else,” Weston said.

But soon, the need to define themselves as

2013 graduates to produce off-Broadway play in NYC

Some graduating seniors are about to make their off-Broadway debuts.

Five Point Productions, a theater production company founded by a small group of Syracuse University seniors, will be putting on an offBroadway show in September.

Earlier this year, Five Point submitted its show, “American Games,” to The Araca Project.

The play, centered around the game of baseball, was written by senior television, radio and film major Kevin Slack, who is also a columnist for The Daily Orange.

The entire Five Point Productions team includes students Will Pullen, Katie Lynch, Dario Caudana, Peter Sansbury and Andy Striph. 2012 alumnus Phil Blechman will direct the show.

Striph, one of the founding members of Five Point, said the production company chose to move forward with the script because of the play’s message, which goes beyond the game of baseball.

“It’s more about whether or not a young person can handle the responsibility life is throwing at him,” said Striph, a senior acting major.

Founded in 1997, The Araca Project selects plays written by alumni from the University of Michigan, Florida State University, Northwestern University and SU, then gives them the tools to produce an off-Broadway show that will run for a short period of time.

When Five Point decided to submit Slack’s script for “American Games” to The Araca Project, the group was already prepared for Pitch Day in New York City. The script was adapted from one Slack wrote two years ago.

“Two or three weeks ago, we went down for the pitch,” Slack said. “All the guys were in the room, which was pretty cool. And that day they called us back and they said they wanted to do it.”

Since then, all members of Five Point have been hard at work trying to push the show forward to get it ready for August rehearsals.

They recently held a casting call, and in June, they will all travel back to NYC for a producer workshop.

Slack’s play focuses on a former baseball phenomenon who slips out of the spotlight after being a much-hyped prospect.

“I’m a huge baseball fan, and I was kind of interested in how athletes are getting huge amounts of attention so young, especially in baseball, where prospects get started in high school,” he said.

Slack said he got the idea for the show after watching Stephen Strasburg, a pitcher for the Washington Nationals, move through the minor leagues.

“This guy had so much pressure on him, people were talking about if he was going to meet expectations, and then he strikes out 14 Pirates in his debut, but then he got hurt,” Slack said.

“And I thought, ‘What would happen if this guy just decided he didn’t want to do it anymore?’”

The play is about whether the protagonist can handle life’s responsibilities. Slack said he came up with the storyline by asking, “What if?”

Five Point member Dario Caudana said they all quickly fell in love with “American Games.”

“The writing and the dialogue are great,” Caudana said, describing the script. “Very quick-witted, smart characters that talk at an electric rate.”

“American Games” will run in early Septem-

ber at The American Theatre for Actors at 314 W. 54th St. in NYC. Five Point members hope the Syracuse network in the city will help fill the seats.

“The great thing about Syracuse is that we all look out for each other, on any kind of level,” Caudana said. “We call it the Orange Mafia.”

The show won’t end with “American Games,” though. Five Point Productions isn’t ready to stop after just one play.

separate individuals won’t be a factor. After graduation and 22 years of living side by side, the twins will be taking jobs in different cities and pursuing their dreams in separate places. Working as an architectural draftsman, Weston will head to Martha’s Vineyard in June. Tanner will begin a job as an architectural designer in Boston just a few days later.

While the two share an undeniably close past, the consensus among family and friends seems to be that they’ll be just as successful as individuals.

“I’ve seen different sets of twins in my life, and I think they’re very independent,” said younger brother Cade Halkyard, a sophomore art photography major at SU. “I don’t think they’ll be sad at all. They

always find friends, and they’ll always be with each other in the end.”

Their father is just as confident.

“I think it’s a blessing; I think it’s unique, to be able to go through life with someone that close that you’ve grown up with and know intimately,” Daniel Halkyard said. “But really, they’ve developed into their own people at Syracuse. I think they’ve developed a lot more independence over the last five years.”

The twins aren’t worried about separating, either. Though their jobs are in different places, their past experiences have proven there’s no guarantee they won’t end up together again in the future.

“We definitely want to see what it’s like to not be together and to make our own mark,” Weston said. “We definitely talk about opening a firm. But who knows?”

Graduates entering workforce should update wardrobe

ow that there’s only a few days until graduation, it’s unfortunately time to set down your Solo cup of beer and swap your college party clothes for something more professional. Scary, huh?

Work attire is a tricky subject. While some items are always considered inappropriate for work — i.e. tube tops or sweats — it all depends on the kind of office in which you’re working.

The first type of office, and the most difficult to figure out, is an office with no dress code. This typically includes small companies and startups. In this case, use your judgment, but always aim for overdressed rather than underdressed.

Last summer, I worked in a collaborative workspace that housed several startups. Most of the tech-based startups consisted of three or four scruffy guys wearing sandals, cargo shorts and graphic T-shirts.

That attire might be OK for a web designer, but if you’re going to a business meeting with investors, you certainly want to dress more professionally.

Next up is the always-ambiguous “business casual.” It’s the middle ground between formal business wear and street wear. It’s a broader spectrum than the absolute “business professional” attire.

There’s a wide range of options for business casual, but don’t think that just because something is “dressy” means it’s appropriate for a business casual workplace.

If you would wear it to a club, you shouldn’t

never wears pajamas in public wear it to work. Avoid anything neon or shiny, avoid denim and even during the summer, please never wear flip-flops.

If you’re in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, you’re most likely going to be working in a business professional setting that is ultra-conservative. Conservative doesn’t have to mean boring, though.

The conservative office staple is the alwaysdependable blazer. Try one in a neutral color: black, navy, tan or cream. If you’re in a less conservative office, try a bright color like red, green or cobalt.

For some great fashion-forward blazers, try Zara. The store has a variety of colors, prints, cuts and textures for any office setting.

Another fashionable trick for office settings is to cinch a dress or blouse-and-skirt combo with a skinny belt. J.Crew has a great assortment.

When shopping for your new work wardrobe, make sure you get a nice, white buttondown shirt, black pants, flats, pumps and a work tote bag. Every professional girl should have these items that they can personalize with

understated accessories.

Your hair and makeup should be simple, clean and groomed. A simple ballerina bun is a great go-to hairstyle. And for makeup: Foundation, mascara and a swipe of lip-gloss are all you need.

A big problem I find in the fashion workplace is people who take too much liberty with the word “creative.” If you work in a creative office, don’t wear ripped jeans, fedoras or anything remotely “hipster.” You want your work to speak for itself. Never let your outfit outshine your work.

The key is to dress for success.

Wearing the wrong clothes to work not only makes you look unprofessional, but it can also hinder your work relationships. If people see that you don’t make an effort with your appearance, why should they expect you to make an effort with your work?

And with this advice, I’m signing off as the fashion columnist for The Daily Orange. I had a great time talking fashion with you, and truly appreciated all of the emails and comments I received about my columns — positive or negative. I really hope I inspired you all to dress and be your best.

Hack says goodbye after work as beat reporter, editor in chief

nowing he would never suit up for Syracuse again, Kris Joseph spit out six words in between his sobs and sniffles.

“I just can’t believe it’s over.”

The quote came after the Orange lost to Ohio State in the Elite Eight in Boston in March 2012, ending one of the most successful seasons in basketball program history.

Joseph’s feelings were similar to the rest of the team’s — devastated. It showed in the tears streaming down their cheeks and reverberated in their words.

That game would be one of my final ones, too, as I moved off the beat to work as editor in chief this past year. I did not see the team get any better than last year, but the Orange went and surprised everyone and ultimately reached Atlanta.

When the Orange made the Final Four this season, I tried to vicariously live through our coverage, attempting to know what was happening behind the scenes, just like I witnessed a year earlier. I found my passion for planning projects such as a Final Four special edition

and the funky bunch preview to fill in the gap of missing the games.

My four years have been stamped with moments like these. Through all of it, what I learned most was that each one of these moments is always about the people. The best stories paint a picture for the reader and display the personalities of the people in them.

As I pack my suitcase and prepare to move on to another stage in my career, I will always remember the people I have covered and interviewed through times of jubilation and duress. A soaking wet yet infinitely optimistic men’s soccer head coach Ian McIntyre after his team blew a two-goal lead to lose at home to South Florida in freezing rain, another lump during a miserable season in 2011. Doug Marrone taking to the podium and placing all of the blame on himself in five straight games to end Syracuse football’s 2011 season, his eyes more tired and hair more

disheveled with each loss.

Dion Waiters, always happy to talk about his skills, smiling and telling me that no one in college basketball can guard him.

The people make the stories. Even, and especially, the ones who don’t make it into print. I met a taxi driver in Raleigh, N.C., who was originally from Rochester, N.Y., but left to find a job and always carried pictures of his two young kids. I spent Thanksgiving in a New York City hostel while covering a tournament in Madison Square Garden. OK, that one isn’t so glamorous.

Early in my career, an editor told me to always make sure to watch what happens in between plays — what players and coaches are doing on the sidelines, what players do on the court after a shot — because that is often from where the best moments come.

Syracuse’s Elite Eight loss was full of those moments, and it’s why it will be the event I remember most from my time here.

My fingers rarely stopped typing during the game, whether it was capturing coach Jim Boeheim’s reaction after receiving his first technical foul of the year, or Jared Sullinger’s demeanor as he went to the bench in foul trouble. Late in the game, Joseph turned the ball over, and as he picked it up from the sideline, he

put it to his mouth and attempted to take a bite out of the rubber.

When the game ended, I took my notepad and recorder into both locker rooms. Before talking to anyone, I surveyed the scenes and attempted to describe them on paper.

Agony and ecstasy. Scoop Jardine, overwhelmed by tears, and Deshaun Thomas, overcome by glee with a giant grin. I filed a story I was as proud of as any, and still am to this day.

As my colleagues and I drove back to Syracuse the next day, we had mixed emotions, as well. On one hand, it would be nice to return to campus — spending nearly every week on the road for two months takes its toll — but on the other hand, our journey was also done. I knew I was preparing for editor in chief and would no longer be on the beat.

One year later, I submit my final words of an unimaginable four-year run at The Daily Orange. I think I understand a little better what Joseph felt that night.

I just can’t believe it’s over.

“I think his first week of practice, after a few plays, we were like, ‘Yeah, he can ball,’” Miller said.

Right away, Marasco started throwing behind-the-back passes and shots. Desko would yell. But it was that willingness to try what his teammates wouldn’t that made him special. Even as a freshman, Marasco was up for anything.

That carried off of the field, too, where Marasco struggled to resist temptations to party before frustrated older teammates reined him in.

“Being on the lacrosse team, you get a lot of publicity and you have a lot of friends and stuff,” Marasco said, “and it’s tough seeing all these guys constantly going out and going to the bars and hanging out, and you got to just kind of do your homework.”

Chris Daniello, a senior captain during Marasco’s freshman year, knew Marasco from back home because he lived in the next town.

Marasco grew up watching Daniello, and they eventually played together.

Daniello knew Marasco wanted to be great.

It’s why Marasco asked for the No. 22 jersey as a raw freshman. Daniello, who Marasco refers to as an older brother, spelled it out for him.

“You can definitely get lost in the mix with the party scene and all that type of stuff,” Daniello said. “You got to remember what you’re there for and what you want to get out of your career.”

So Marasco cut back, and his talent shined through. Just as he does now, he starred with the ball in his stick. It’s his toy, and he plays with it better than almost anyone.

But he wasn’t done rubbing his teammates the wrong way. Miller recalls a practice after SU beat Army in 2011 — a game in which the sophomore Marasco had run out the clock, evading Army defenders until time expired. During practice, though, Miller overheard Marasco say to captain Joel White, “I’m the reason we won that game in the first place.”

Miller assumed he misheard Marasco until attack Stephen Keogh recounted the same conversation.

“There was one point where we were like, ‘JoJo, you need to relax because your ego’s getting out of control,’” Miller said.

Today, Marasco’s a cool-headed captain.

He’s the kind of player Desko compliments for making the right plays on the field, and saying the right things off of it.

Even last year, though, he wasn’t all there yet. Top-heavy Syracuse had graduated a twotime national champion senior class. Always the most talented, Marasco became the best of what remained offensively. It was his attack

But when Miller texted Marasco, asking how the team was progressing, he only got vague, uncertain responses: SU could be good.

The Orange seemed OK. To Miller, it seemed like Marasco didn’t know.

A 9-8 2012 season and a first-round NCAA tournament exit opened Marasco up to scathing criticism. He’d get hateful emails from angry fans. Marasco told his father, Richard Marasco, Both agreed it was his burden to bear.

expectations,” Richard Marasco said. “A lot of people in the lacrosse world were like, ‘Who’s this kid to come in and think he can take this number.’ That type of thing. Kind of legitimate questions.

“And I guess some of the things could be a lot nastier than that. And, hey, it’s the truth.

When you take that kind of responsibility on, people are looking for you and expecting you to perform.”

So this season, Marasco helped rebuild the team’s chemistry. The senior class took an RV trip to Ohio, has played pick-up football at Manley Field House and regularly heads to Varsity or Chipotle for postpractice meals. Marasco even gives tips to the next generation of playmakers, like Kevin Rice.

“You can tell it’s his senior year,” SU midfielder Scott Loy said, “it’s kind of his last go at it.”

Marasco is at ease on the field now. He can no longer hide behind veterans. He’s done overplaying, forcing passes or dodging away from open teammates. Marasco insists he’s not a player the offense needs to be built around. This year, it’s simply f lowed around him.

During halftime of Saturday’s Big East championship, Marasco had no points and no assists. But SU had eight goals, and each time Marasco caught the ball, he looked perfectly calm, rotating passes through the offense that was well on its way to picking apart Villanova.

Now, rest, nutrition and “taking care of your body” are the mantras by which Marasco lives. He’s as comfortable as he’s ever been in an Orange uniform. Still, he’s expected to deliver a national championship.

The pressure of the jersey and its number is constant, but that’s what he asked for and who he is.

“It’s been there the whole time,” Marasco said. “I struggled with that. ... Some things maybe didn’t go my way a couple years, but other than that, it’s finally all coming together.” jmklinge@syr.edu @Jacob_Klinger_

Megill’s spectacular Syracuse career will come to an end. One of the best defenders in program history will play his final game at some point during the NCAA tournament top-seeded Orange’s run at a national championship. The passionate leader of SU’s suddenly elite defense will end his time at the university.

His one-liners and hyper-passionate quips before and after games often seem cliché, but they’re completely genuine. Away from the game, he’s quieter and more subdued, but in the lacrosse world — on the field, in the locker room or in the weight room — he’s the zealous leader he appears to be.

“What he says is what he thinks, and all he really wants to do is get out of here with a championship,” said Syracuse goaltender Dominic Lamolinara. “And that’s all he’s talked about since fall.”

Despite the accolades — two All-Big East selections and an All-American honor — it’s one of the glaring holes in Megill’s resume. As of now, his class is the first since 1999 to not win a national title. He’s never even reached a Final Four. It nags at him, even if he pretends it doesn’t matter.

“I try not to think about it,” Megill said. “I don’t want to come out and try and do too much and hurt my team.”

A NCAA championship is something his brother, Ray, couldn’t achieve, either. Ray Megill was an All-American defender at Maryland in the mid-2000s. He played in a pair of Final Fours, but never brought home the hardware.

Megill said his older brother, now playing with Major League Lacrosse’s Ohio Machine, is “living vicariously” through his last hurrah in college.

“He wants me to get that ring and I want to get it for my family and everyone that’s helped me come up,” Megill said said.

His whole family shares the same passion Megill does. They’re at the stadium tailgating four hours before the game. They’re outside tailgating four hours after.

“Maybe it is something that just runs in our blood,” Ray said.

When Megill was in high school and Ray was playing at Maryland, his parents took Megill down from their Clark, N.J., home to College Park, Md., on weekends to watch Ray and the Terrapins play.

This was during a time before ESPNU, before college lacrosse was a staple of springtime television. Megill played at Arthur L. Johnson High School, a small school of less than 1,000 students. Johnson was far from a traditional lacrosse power, and when others had to rely on just the teachings of coaches, Megill was taking in the game at one of its highest levels from the bleachers in Maryland.

“When he was at the high school level, he was basically a sponge,” said Louis Van Bergen, who coached Megill at Johnson. “ … He would come back and he was just doing things naturally on the lacrosse field where we’d be like, ‘We haven’t talked about that yet.’ His instincts would just naturally take over from watching so much lacrosse.”

ever seen.

Now, Megill is a film junkie. Coaches watch film on iPads, but they have a program set up in which players can watch film online.

On bus rides home from games, he always tries to get ahold of one of those iPads, and when he’s back at SU, he takes to the laptop to watch what went right, what went wrong and what needs preparation for his next game.

Megill takes any opportunity he can — before bed, during classes — to watch film on his laptop. It makes him easy to coach and play with.

“He actually talks to the coach and gets us in the right defense if we change up the defenses,” Lamolinara said, “so it’s like having a defensive coordinator out there.”

But for all of the knowledge Megill has of the game, it’s the heart and emotion that sets him apart. Even SU head coach John Desko, winner of 10 national championships, said Megill is as good a leader as he’s ever had.

Megill came to Syracuse as the No. 74 player in his class, according to Inside Lacrosse.

He ranked behind Joe Fazio, another captain, and Kyle Carey as the Orange’s third best defender in the class. But he’s the one who’s become the vocal and outspoken leader of the SU defense.

In the past three weeks, that defense has carried Syracuse to the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and turned the Orange into the favorite to bring home the national title. The whole way, Megill’s been locking down opponents’ top scorers, directing the back line and, when needed, rousing his teammates.

Lecky’s improved shooting helps guide Syracuse into NCAAs

The formula is simple: When Hakeem Lecky scores, the Orange wins.

SU is 5-0 when Lecky finds the back of the net.

After struggling with his shot early in the season, Lecky has scored six goals in the last four games — all Syracuse wins — helping guide SU Who: Bryant to a Big East tourWhere: Carrier Dome When: Sunday, 7:30 p.m. nament title. “I just haven’t really been thinking about it too much,” Lecky said. “If I find myself open, I just try to shoot as hard as I can or try to put it in a spot where the goalie can’t get it.”

Early in the season, Lecky’s shots skirted left and right. He blew by defenders with blazing speed, but couldn’t finish around the net.

Through 12 games, Lecky tallied just two goals and shot a woeful 11 percent.

In the first game against Albany, Lecky attempted six shots. Only one was on goal, and all six missed. The next game against Army, Lecky took four more shots. Again, they all missed the net.

He began the season on the first midfield line, but only notched two goals through midApril and was mired in a seasonlong slump.

“I don’t like to go back in the past and think about how I was playing at the beginning of the year,” Lecky said, “but I do know that I don’t think I was playing as well as I should have been.”

But Lecky didn’t let his struggles get to him. Midway through the season, he started warming up freshman goaltender Evan Molloy with more regularity. Lecky said 15-20 minutes of rifling shots at Molloy every day helped his accuracy.

Teammates, coaches and friends offered words of encouragement, but Lecky was never worried. He knew he’d start producing. It was just a matter of time.

“I definitely think I could have been playing much better,” Lecky said, “but it goes on.”

Lecky also absorbed advice from teammate JoJo Marasco. The senior told him to dodge hard and shoot hard. Don’t worry about finishing. Just shoot the ball.

Defender Brian Megill said Lecky often wins sprints in practices. Lecky laughed and scratched his head when asked if he usually finishes first. He said Henry Schoonmaker’s usually right by his side. The races are always competitive, but Lecky often comes out on top.

Lecky was a matchup nightmare for opposing middies. He just needed to convert his scoring chances.

“I’ve talked all year long about Hakeem being very quick, very fast, being one of the best dodgers on the team,” Syracuse head coach John Desko said. “Now, he just needs to be able

to finish the ball to complete his game, and he’s starting to do that.”

Against Georgetown on April 20, Lecky delivered late in the third quarter. As he’s done all season, Lecky used his sizzling speed to burn a defender. That part was nothing new. This time, though, Lecky converted.

He scored again against Notre Dame in the regular-season finale — twice.

Then — just five days later against the Fighting Irish in the Big East tournament semifinals — twice again.

Then he scored once again in the conference championship against Villanova with the game tied in the first quarter. Syracuse didn’t trail the rest of the game.

Lecky’s tear elevated his shooting percentage from 11 to 27 percent. He shot 6-of-11 in the final four games. His struggles were something

of the past.

“You can see it in the stats lately,” Desko said. “He’s doing a real nice job coming down the stretch.”

Lately, no one has been able to stop him. SU midfielder Chris Daddio said Schoonmaker’s success paved the way for Lecky’s recent emergence. Teams were forced to key in on Schoonmaker when he was on the field with Lecky and Ryan Barber. That opened the door for Lecky.

Now, he’ll have a chance to continue to shine on college lacrosse’s biggest stage, starting against Bryant on Sunday night.

“I don’t think he was struggling,” Daddio said. “I think he just didn’t have as many chances to go to the goal.” tbhass@syr.edu @TrevorHass

The Chiefs are in last place in their division and are looking to lure in a local audience.

SYR ACUSE CHIEFS With the Major League Baseball season in full swing, Syracuse’s own minor league team is starting up as well. The Syracuse SkyChiefs, better known as the Chiefs, are Syracuse’s Triple-A baseball team.

The Chiefs are the Washington Nationals affiliate, and have produced stars such as Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg, Roy Halladay and Vernon Wells. The team has also churned out past studs like Carlos Delgado and even two-sport NFL Hall of Fame defensive back Deion Sanders, who had a short stint with the team at the tail end of his career in 2001.

During commencement weekend, the Chiefs have a four-game home stand with the Norfolk Tides, the Baltimore Orioles affiliate.

SYR ACUSE CRUNCH The Syracuse Crunch is headed to the Eastern Conference semifinals of the American Hockey League playoffs. The Crunch, the local affiliate of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, wrapped up an impressive season 45-27-3 before sweeping the Portland Pirates 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

Now, Syracuse awaits its second-round opponent. On Friday, the Crunch will either hit the road for a matchup with the secondseeded Springfield Falcons or host the fifthseeded Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Should Syracuse draw the Penguins advance, the game would take place in Crunch’s home arena: the War Memorial at The Oncenter on 800 S. State St. The Crunch is the sixth AHL team to play in Syracuse and the first since the Syracuse Firebirds did so in 1980. Before that, the last hockey-related event to take place in the city was the filming of “Slap Shot” in 1977.

The team that now calls the War Memo-

rial home bounced around before landing in Syracuse. The Crunch began as the Hamilton Canucks in 1992, representing the Vancouver Canucks. Two years later, the Canucks moved to Central New York and were renamed the Crunch by a public vote. The Crunch remained loyal to Vancouver, British Columbia, until 2000, when it became the Columbus Blue Jackets’ affiliate.

After representing the Blue Jackets for 10 years, Syracuse switched to the Anaheim Ducks for two years before finally settling on the Lightning this season — a season coincided with great success. The Syracuse Crunch won its second division title this year, with the first coming in 2001-02.

Syracuse seeking revenge after losing 2012 NCAA final

Bridget Daley stood on the sidelines and watched Northwestern celebrate winning the national championship. She watched the Wildcats storm the field at LaValle Stadium after defeating the Orange 8-6 on the biggest stage in collegiate women’s lacrosse.

The Big East champion Orange (16-3, 8-0 Big East) enters the tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play the winner of Boston College (12-7) and Dartmouth (10-7) on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.

“I have it ingrained in my mind,” Daley said. “You never want to feel like that. But we’re lucky to have another chance, another season. ...We’re not going to stop for anything until we get there.”

It will be a tough task for the Orange to get back to that point, especially without senior leader Michelle Tumolo, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear on April 16. But the team has won all six games it has played without her this season behind junior attack Alyssa Murray, the Big East Attack Player of the Year, and senior defender Becca Block, the Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

And the bitter taste the national championship game loss left in the mouth of Daley is surely shared by the duo of award winners and the rest of the returning contributors.

“It definitely fuels the fire,” said junior midfielder Amy Cross. “We carry those emotions. We want to get back to that same place again, the Final Four. But we’ve just got to focus one game at a time and hope that we’ll be

able to play well enough to get there.”

Junior goaltender Alyssa Costantino called it one of the toughest losses she has ever experienced.

“Losing that championship was obviously very disappointing,” Costantino said. “You kind of just use that to motivate you to never feel like that again. So definitely taking that emotion and never wanting to feel like that ever again to want to win this one.”

To prepare to get back to that stage, SU jam-packed its schedule with the fiercest opponents in the country. The Orange played nine games against teams currently in the top 20 in the country, including Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6.

“We played the best teams in the country at the beginning of the season and gained some valuable experience,” SU head coach Gary Gait said. “We’ve been able to work on some things and make some corrections and put ourselves in a position where we feel pretty good about the way we’re playing going into the playoffs.”

One major factor SU has this year that it didn’t have last year is freshman attack Kayla Treanor. She stepped into the lineup and had an immediate effect, leading the team with 59 goals and ranking second with 78 points.

“This is like one of the best classes that have ever gone through Syracuse,” Treanor said. “They’re so successful and they lead our team on and off the field. It’s an honor to play with them and I’d love to see this class walk out as national champions.”

One word comes to mind for the Orange seniors: revenge. They’re out for it. The Orange played 13 games against teams in the tournament and posted a 10-3 record in those games. The team knows that what matters is now, and the sour taste of how last season ended will push them to even greater heights.

“We’re confident. We’re also hungry,” Daley said. “We do have a final goal in mind, and that’s the national championship.”

t was a turning point for Syracuse. Coming off of a loss to Hobart, the Orange trailed a lesser Georgetown team at halftime in Washington, D.C. SU could’ve rolled over. A season with so much potential could have faded into nothing.

Brian Megill isn’t one for halftime speeches. He’s a vocal leader, but he saves that for the field or conversations with individual players, not extravagant locker-room preaching. But with Syracuse down at the break on April 20, Megill had no choice.

“I really questioned the team’s integrity on whether they like losing or not, and I think it showed,” he continued. “I like to think it hit home and showed at the half. I just hope all the guys can take away all the positives I give to them.”

oJo Marasco is free now — mostly.

The hate mail has dried up, the distractions are managed and his attitude leads rather than frustrates. The senior knows he wears the same No. 22 donned by former Syracuse greats. Expectations remain, but he’s accepted them. He likes it that way.

He also knows that he hasn’t always lived up to those expectations, until now.

“I’m having a lot of fun,” Marasco said.

“Things are really clicking this year.”

Maybe the expectations weren’t fair. But when Marasco came to Syracuse, the Orange

“The first week of practice as a freshman, I think everybody’s paying attention to see if he can ball or not,” former SU midfielder Jovan Miller said.

Miller sent Marasco a Facebook message welcoming him to SU after watching the prospective attack score a highlight-reel goal in the Under Armour All-American game.
