SIFE opens thrift store, aims to give back to community

raveling to New York City to find inspiration. Hand selecting 5,000 pieces of merchandise. Determining prices for all of these items. Poring over paint colors. This is how Nicole Fountain spent her summer.

Fountain is part of Students in Free Enterprise, an organization based out of Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management, which will open a thrift store in Marshall Square Mall with the Rescue Mission next month. The thrift store, named 3fifteen, will operate in conjunction with Cafe Kubal, a coffee shop.

Students have been working tirelessly throughout the summer to prepare for a soft launch that will take place Friday. The store’s grand opening will take place Sept. 19.

As project manager, Fountain said she has been involved in everything from picking out the flooring and ceiling fixtures of the store to selecting merchandise from the Rescue Mission’s warehouse.

The store will sell men and wom-

en’s clothing, costumes, designer goods, jewelry, furniture and home goods, said Fountain, a retail management and marketing major.

SIFE is a student organization that takes on several projects a year in which students work with for-profit, nonprofit or student organizations to teach and help implement business and financial concepts into these projects, according to the group’s website.

The group is currently working on nine or 10 projects involving organizations that range from social and environmental to economic, said president Camellia Loojune, a senior accounting major. But regardless of the type of project involved, SIFE always works to make sure the project can someday be self-sufficient.

“Our mission is basically teaching a man how to fish instead of giving him one for the day,” Loojune said.

The Rescue Mission, a nonprofit organization that works to aid the homeless and hungry, operates several thrift stores called Thrifty Shopper stores. The stores sell donated items and all profits go back to the organization, said Liz Poda, director

Freshmen bring increased diversity

Unlike most of the Class of 2016, Mehak Ali will not experience Juice Jam, late-night trips to Kimmel Food Court and basketball games at the Carrier Dome during her first semester at Syracuse University.

Rather, Ali will be living near Florence, Italy’s historic city center — 4,163 miles away from SU’s main campus — as part of the university’s Discovery Florence Program.

“When I applied to ‘Cuse I was like, ‘This is my No. 1; if I get into this school and get into this program, I don’t care if it’s a money issue, I don’t care if it’s a separation issue — I’m going,’” said Ali, a freshman earth sciences major with a focus in environmental sciences.

The 32 students participating in Discovery Florence this semester is an all-time high for the 4-yearold program, but this is not the only demographic record the Class of 2016 has shattered.

This year’s freshman class contains the smallest proportion of students from the Northeast, 63.9 percent, in SU’s 142-year history.

This shows that SU’s vision of diversity is not limited to socioeconomic, racial and ethnic measures, said Don Saleh, vice president for enrollment management.

“We have a goal of continuing to build a diverse student body, and one of the ways we measure that diversity is by looking at the geographic distribution of our students,” he said.

This 4.6 percent drop from the 2011–12 academic year is balanced by upticks in students from other areas, Saleh said. Students from both the South and the West, for example, are up by more than 2 percent.

SU received 25,781 applications and about 51 percent of them were accepted, Saleh said. As of Aug. 12, approximately 3,430 students were enrolled and the male-to-female ratio remained unchanged at 44 to 56 percent, respectively.

Like students from outside the Northeast, the number of international students at SU has steadily risen during the past several years as well.

About 9.4 percent of the Class of 2016 is international students, including Diane Danneels, who is Hungar-

ian and Belgian but has lived in Switzerland for the past nine years.

The decision to study 3,872 miles away in Syracuse started to come together several years ago for Danneels, a freshman advertising major.

English is one of her better languages, and she was drawn to SU’s communications program after researching online and talking with a college adviser from the United States.

“America just stood out to me because it’s kind of like a menu,” she said. “You take the classes you want and all the ones you’re obligated to take and everything.”

The trend of increased geographic diversity of the student body isn’t coincidental.

Brian Spector, president of SU’s Alumni Association, said the university recognized the applicant pool in the Northeast was shrinking several years ago and amped up its recruitment efforts in cities such as Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, San Francisco and other “geographies of opportunity.”

Incoming students share key trait: Right to representation

s the latest addition of Orange men and women, the one factor you all share is your enrollment at Syracuse University.

You hail from different regions of the country and the globe, are focusing on diverse areas of study and have personal goals for your undergraduate careers. But here, as students of SU, you all have at least one more thing in common: the right to vote.

Just as citizens of the United States are guaranteed the fundamental right to vote, students have the right to cast a ballot in the elections of the Student Association, the official student governing body of SU and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

It is imperative to let your voice be heard through whom you elect in state and national elections. The representatives are responsible for deciding how to allocate your taxes, establish components of your public education and create initiatives like paving the roads in your city.

Now as a citizen of the SU community, your voice matters here. Like the legislators who represent your home state in the Capitol, representatives of SA speak on behalf of your home college in Maxwell Auditorium.

This governing body, composed of students and headed by President Dylan Lustig, is responsible for allocating your student fee, making improvements to your academic and social experiences on campus and creating initiatives like funding buses to ferry you to local supermarkets.

A major part of SA’s responsibility is properly handling and allocating your student fee. This is a monetary amount you pay through tuition granted to SA to distribute to the many clubs, academic and social groups on campus.

Student groups must apply for access to these funds, and the SA Finance Board presents the delegations at semiannual budget meetings.

It is important you are aware of this process to ensure the group you want to join, such as a fraternity or a publication, has the funds needed to function.

Similarly, your SA representatives work to advance the quality of life in your home college and on campus.

Lustig, a junior, discussed this past spring running a campus-wide day of community service during this upcoming semester, and PJ Alampi, chair of the Student Life Committee and also a junior, said one major initiative this fall is a bike rental program open to all.

Though the plans and concepts the members of SA create do improve student life, representatives can be most efficient when made aware of problems that need fixing. That is where you come in.

Your SA representatives are accessible, a point Alampi greatly stressed. He said representatives can be reached by tweeting at the SA Twitter account, sending an email to any representative (whose email addresses can be found by clicking on the “representatives” tab on the sa.syr.edu homepage), or you can attend the weekly Monday meetings during the academic year at 7:30 p.m. in Maxwell Auditorium.

You can even become a member of the SA community yourself by running for one of many representative positions. As a first-year student, you may have some fresh perspectives and valuable new ideas.

Being aware of the proceedings of your governmental body here at SU is just as important as keeping up with national issues. You are now a part of this community. It is your right to use your representatives to make the SU experience the best it can be.

Students must make use of SU resources In Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s opening note to students in the Syracuse Welcome 2012 booklet, she writes, “We are delighted to have you join us, and we promise you many opportunities to grow, learn and explore.”

She is absolutely correct. Any university, especially the one you have all chosen, provides innumerable chances to get involved and to push yourself toward your goals. In the next four years, you will learn a craft, find a job and hone some valuable skills.

Your classes help you achieve these goals. But the opportunities outside the classroom can prove to be just as valuable, if not more valuable.

Though you need to attend classes, no one will force you to launch yourself headfirst into the other opportunities SU provides.

Find a teacher you admire in a profession you are interested in, and begin a relationship. It’s that simple. Professors are here to help you be successful.

The university provides the tools both in and out of required class time. The responsibility is on you to take advantage of them during your time here.

But most importantly, they’re the only four years when you can wear a basketball jersey in public without looking like a ninny. Don’t have a jersey? Time to get one. I’m here to guide you so you may properly relish the opportunity to bare arms when it’s 23 degrees in September.

The pressure’s on, kids. What will you wear while playing beer pong in the front yard of some graduate student you’ve never met?

Sure, you can be unoriginal and wear your favorite player’s uniform or go really vanilla and get a blank Syracuse jersey, but here’s the best choice: a 1990s throwback.

Go ahead. Get that hideous Vancouver Grizzlies jersey on eBay. Shell out 80 bucks for an Orlando Magic Shaq jersey. Make us laugh with your pre-World-Peace Ron Artest Pacers getup.

Walking down Comstock Avenue in that with your snapback and your cheap frat sunglasses, I guarantee you’ll get at least 15 to 20

comments along the lines of “Sweet jersey, bro!”

Now you may say, “No, Kevin! Why, this is a serious academic institution! Surely there are more important things at stake here.” Oh, naive young man. No. Go exploring through off-campus housing some time: avenues Euclid, Comstock and Walnut. Trust me, any day of the week, you’ll be able to hear the dulcet tones of Skrillex bursting your eardrums and see a cornucopia of multicolored basketball unis.

It’s really a fashion choice that has practical applications. I assure you. It can get pretty hot here — for two weeks of the school year.

I’m not opposed to our decision to celebrate the genius of Mr. Naismith’s game while throwing back Keystone Lights and making ill-advised decisions. But I do make one modest proposal: Let’s stop with the high school jerseys. The Carmelo Anthony Oak Hill Academy model. The prep school uniforms of Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo.

It’s creepy. One shade away from wearing a Little League World Series jersey. Let’s leave that jazz to the hipsters, who will think it’s super-ironic and not at all disturbing.

With that, I hope you now understand. The selection of a basketball jersey is a momentous occasion in a young man’s life, far more important than studying or expanding his horizons or any of that other crap. This decision will absolutely make or break the next four years of your life.

Welcome to our strange, addled, little frozen tundra of a society here in Syracuse, N.Y. Have a swell time.

Shaw, Sadler receive renovations, upgrades to bathrooms, bedrooms

When reminiscing about their time at Syracuse University’s Shaw Hall, Taylor Cartwright and Daniel Kim always remember one thing: the bathrooms.

Cartwright, a sophomore advertising major, said she remembers the old, “gross” tile falling off the bathroom ceiling.

Kim, a junior finance major who enjoyed his time in Shaw overall, said he will never forget the constant clogging of the showers.

But students living in Shaw this year will probably not have the same memories as Cartwright and Kim. SU updated the facilities, specifically the bathrooms, at Shaw and Sadler halls this summer, said Eric Beattie, director of the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction.

The renovations at Shaw consisted of transforming the residence hall’s old-style bathrooms to new, single-occupant bathrooms and refurbishing some of the bedrooms next to the new bathrooms, he said.

The single-occupant bathrooms installed in other residence halls, such as Lawrinson Hall and the SkyHalls, have been very popular with students, he said.

Next year, SU will focus on modernizing the remaining bedrooms, corridors and lobbies at Shaw, Beattie said.

A new entrance to Shaw will be built on Euclid Avenue as part of the second phase of the project next summer, allowing for a bet-

ter flow and connection between the dining facility at the center of the building and the residential areas, Beattie said.

A new elevator will be built on the Comstock Avenue side of Shaw, helping improve vertical access in the building, said Sara Miller, associate director of SU News Services, in an email.

Jessica Alessandra, a senior advertising major, described Shaw as the “stereotypical college dorm.”

“It absolutely drove me nuts that I couldn’t use the elevator during the day because of the dining hall,” Alessandra said. “I lived on the fourth floor, so I was constantly having to walk up and down four floors.”

The changes made to Sadler this summer were primarily bathroom renovations. By next summer, all of them will be completed, Beattie said.

Other improvements to Sadler are currently being considered, such as expanding the dining facility to accommodate more people, he said.

Elise DeLoy, a senior television, radio and film major who lived in Sadler, believes that plumbing at the residence hall needs to take priority.

“The bathrooms were always pretty gross, and the plumbing was very old. The showers would run out of hot water, and there didn’t seem to be enough of them,” DeLoy said. “I hope they fix the bathroom plumbing so hot water is available to everyone.”

SU is currently in the process of updating and renovating all of its residence halls. Each year, a few are selected for improvements. The specific halls are chosen based on condition and avail-

The design process takes place about a year in advance, starting the spring or summer before construction actually begins. The Office of Housing, Meal Plan and I.D. Card Services; the Office of Residence Life; and the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction all provide input about needed improvements, Beattie said.

“The projects are usually put out to bid around January so that contractors can order materials and coordinate the work in advance,” Beattie said. “The summer construction season is very short, and there is little room for error.”

In addition, FIXit and the Department of Public Safety were active participants in planning the renovations for Shaw and Sadler, said Bill Longcore, associate director of the Office of Residence Life, in an email.

“Students were not specifically involved in the Shaw conversation, but students’ feedback from other projects involving similar improvements were part of the discussion,” Longcore said. “The new bathrooms in Shaw were part of earlier renovations in Lyons, Flint and Lawrinson halls, to which students have responded very favorably.” mhnewman@syr.edu

Marshall Street saw several changes this summer, with some favorites leaving for good, others simply relocating a few doors down and new vendors entering the market.

Insomnia Cookies

Yogurtland

Insomnia Cookies moved because the new location is larger and better able to accommodate crowds, said Renee Sarnecky, marketing manager for Insomnia Cookies. During the summer, the company operated from a food truck at the corner of Marshall Street and South Crouse Avenue while preparations were made to relocate. Although the food truck was successful, Sarnecky said, it will no longer be used at this location.

The store will feature more than 50 flavors of frozen yogurt and 35 toppings. Gluten-free, sugar-free and non-fat yogurts will be available. Additionally, all the flavors meet the National Yogurt Association’s criteria for “live and active culture frozen yogurt.”

Insomnia Cookies, formerly housed at 123 Marshall St., relocated to 137 Marshall St., the former home of Pita El Saha, in an effort to find a larger location.

The Syracuse University staple announced it would move and temporarily operate from a food truck on its Facebook page June 1. The storefront became available when Pita El Saha’s owner, Bechara Karam, decided to close the store and retire.

Zonies

Zonies, The Calzone King opened a new store on Marshall Street on Aug. 18 in Insomnia Cookies’ former location. The company opened a store closer to Syracuse University to better serve its customers in the campus area with faster delivery, said owner Jamie West.

The store offers more than 50 types of calzones and also gives its patrons the ability to create their own. West said the store will eventually offer chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, breadsticks and cookies as well.

Zonies is located in what was formerly Insomnia Cookies at 123 Marshall St. Despite the size of the store, West said Zonies will provide seating and offer patrons the ability to eat in the store. He said benches are set up on the side, and there are plans to eventually provide additional seating.

Frozen yogurt chain Yogurtland will open in late August in the former home of Brickstone Eatery at 147 Marshall St.

Co-owners Josh Weinstein and Brett Kinsler said in an email that the proximity to Syracuse University was a major draw to the new location. The university area is also ideal due to the family-friendly environment of the city.

Yogurtland currently operates 190 locations in the United States, Mexico and Guam, but the goal for the company is to expand to 1,000 total stores by the end of 2017, including 88 locations in the New York City area, according to a company fact sheet.

Cafe Kubal

Coffee shop Cafe Kubal will also open in Marshall Square Mall in mid-September.

The store will be housed in the old Follett’s Orange Bookstore, which closed Feb. 24, and will operate in conjunction with a thrift store known as 3fifteen. 3fifteen is affiliated with the Rescue Mission and Students in Free Enterprise, a Syracuse University student organization.

The cafe itself will keep with a vintage theme, as it will be almost entirely built out of refurbished items and materials from the Rescue Mission’s warehouse, said Cafe Kubal owner Matt Godard.

Pan Am Flight 103 bomber dies

The only person ever convicted in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing that killed 270 people, including 35 Syracuse University students, died May 20.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, a former Libyan intelligence officer, was charged in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland. The 35 SU students on the flight were returning from study abroad programs in London and Florence, Italy.

Though al-Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison, he was released eight years into his sentence in 2009 after he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Doctors expected him to live for only three months.

Students killed in the bombing are honored annually with Remembrance Week, which takes place during the fall semester and culminates in a Rose Laying Ceremony. Thirty-five SU seniors are selected as Remembrance Scholars each year.

Laurie Fine, wife of former associate men’s basketball coach Bernie Fine, filed a libel lawsuit regarding ESPN’s reporting of sexual abuse allegations against her husband.

The lawsuit accused ESPN reporter Mark Schwarz and producer Arthur Berko of ruining Fine’s reputation by “maliciously publishing false and defamatory factual accusations,” according to the 44-page lawsuit. The lawsuit addressed broadcasts and written stories regarding a secretly taped phone conversation between Laurie Fine and accuser Bobby Davis.

ESPN stated that it stood by its reporting and filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit July 27. The motion is scheduled to be heard by Senior Judge Lawrence Kahn in Albany on Sept. 7.

University Avenue reconstructed

After several months of construction as part of the first phase of the Connective Corridor project, University Avenue became a twoway street July 2.

The conversion was originally planned to be completed in mid-November of 2011.

Destiny USA project cut short

Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner announced June 6 that the first phase of Destiny USA, the ongoing expansion project to the Carousel Center, would be the project’s last.

Pyramid Cos., the developer of the project, announced that it would not build the additional shops and luxury resort that were originally planned for the second phase of the project.

Under the developer’s agreement with the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency, Pyramid Cos. does not have to complete the final phase of the project. As a result, SIDA will not provide future funding.

This is not the first time development on Destiny USA has been delayed or canceled.

Pyramid Cos. has paid a total of $2.5 million to the city of Syracuse in exchange for extensions on tax exemptions granted to Destiny USA.

SU officially moves to the ACC

Syracuse University reached an agreement with the Big East conference to exit early and join the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013 on July 16.

Because of the agreement, SU will leave the Big East conference a full year earlier. Originally, SU was not able to move to the ACC until 2014 due to a 27-month notice required to leave the Big East. SU will pay the Big East $7.5 million as an early exit fee. SU’s membership in the Big East will officially end July 1, 2013.

The University of Pittsburgh will also leave the Big East for the ACC. West Virginia University and Texas Christian University left the Big East conference for the Big 12.

SU announced it would leave the Big East for the ACC in September.

Place of Remembrance, College Place revonated

During the summer, Syracuse University rebuilt and refurbished the College Place bus stop and the Place of Remembrance.

Heavy use and Syracuse’s cold weather caused the road in front of the College Place bus stop to deteriorate. As a result, the road was rebuilt and the old pavement and brick crosswalks were replaced.

The Place of Remembrance, a memorial dedicated to the victims who lost their lives in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, was also refurbished during the summer. The Place of Remembrance contains the Remembrance Wall, a limestone and granite wall that lists the names of the 35 victims.

The new wall will be made of limestone, which can better withstand outdoor elements and should be finished by the end of October, in time for the university’s annual Remembrance Week.

Board of Trustees reviews 2005 investigation of Fine allegations

In July, a special committee of Syracuse University’s Board of Trustees released a report evaluating SU’s response to child molestation allegations made against former associate men’s basketball coach Bernie Fine in 2005.

The report concluded SU should have directly contacted law enforcement agencies upon receiving the complaint, but the university acted in good faith and did not attempt to conceal anything.

Last November, Bobby Davis and Mike Lang alleged Fine had molested them while they were ball boys at SU. Fine, who was fired by the university Nov. 27, has denied all wrongdoing and has not been charged.

Davis and Lang’s attorney, Gloria Allred, criticized the report, saying it’s not completely transparent and does not contain critical analysis.

Students take risks with random roommates, others seek compatability on websites

Incoming freshmen across the country rush to their computers at a designated time and date, fingers anxiously clicking the mouse to find the answer to one of the biggest questions freshman year holds: Who’s my roommate?

Syracuse University students have the option of choosing another person they’d like to room with, but if a student does not designate someone, a roommate is randomly assigned.

Kelly Rodoski, communications manager for SU News Services, said in an email that the roommate process works well and that the university has not received feedback from students about the system not working.

Before implementing the current system, SU researched how other schools assign roommates. While many other schools ask students

officials, Alumni Association board members, trustees and other graduates on this front and different initiatives, he said.

This trend is positive, Spector said, because it helps with the national reputation of SU, and enhances the college experience by having students with different perspectives.

“It doesn’t mean we’re ignoring the Northeast, we’re still heavily involved,” he said.

“We’re New York’s college team.”

Changes to the way recruitment was conducted for Discovery Florence this year also

to fill out in-depth surveys about their living habits, these surveys are not always accurate.

The answers provided to the survey questions are often based on a student’s high school experience and aren’t good predictors of college habits. Sometimes parents fill out the survey instead of students, too, Rodoski said.

Assigning roommates randomly also gives students the chance to meet people who are different from them and whom they otherwise might not have met, Rodoski said.

The random roommate process has been successful, and many students who are randomly assigned as roommates choose to room together again the next year. While some random roommate assignments do not work out, this can also happen with roommates who choose each other, Rodoski said.

Students who prefer to select their roommate, rather than have one randomly assigned,

often find each other through social media sites like Facebook or websites such as RoomSurf.

RoomSurf helps students find roommates by creating a profile and taking a roommate survey. The student is then matched with other students from the same school on RoomSurf by a compatibility percentage.

Jocelyn Delaney, a sophomore magazine journalism and Spanish major, found her freshman year roommate on Facebook, and the two then used RoomSurf to see if they would be compatible as roommates.

While her roommate experience wasn’t perfect, the two were able to work through many of their issues because they were good friends.

“Although I used RoomSurf a good amount for searching for potential roommates, I think it is more important to find a good friend first because it is easier to communicate with each other if there are any problems,” Delaney said.

Alex Fernandez and Kris Murray, both sophomores, were randomly assigned as roommates freshman year and are rooming together again this year.

Their experience was a good one and Fernandez, an art and philosophy major, said in an email that he doesn’t think the roommate process can be improved much.

“It takes a while to figure out whether you really want to be roommates with someone or not, and the only real test of it I can think of is to actually live with them,” Fernandez said.

Murray, a biochemistry major, said in an email that he agrees, and the random roommate process is a part of the college experience.

“There’s always a chance that you won’t get along with your roommate,” Murray said. “I think a big part of growing up is learning how to deal with and work with people you don’t really like.”

Nancy Rothschild, associate dean of admissions, said in an email that this semester marked the first time students did not have to initiate the application. Many who were deemed good candidates were encouraged to apply by admissions staff members.

For both international and domestic students, there are many services available on campus to help adjust to life at SU. Pat Burak, director of the Slutzker Center for International Services, said an orientation that pre-empts Syracuse Welcome Week helps international students get up to speed on many topics, such as academics, safety and culture.

The center also received funding for anoth-

er full-time international student adviser — something that was approved three years ago but was never funded.

Though it’s likely the Slutzker Center needs more full-time help, it’s a start, Burak said.

The Division of Student Affairs provided a “substantial” allotment from the undergraduate co-curricular fee to help with international student orientation this year.

The Slutzker Center is a resource that can either help with international students’ problems, or direct them and help familiarize them with the correct place to go, like the Counseling Center, Burak said.

“Going to a counseling center is not common around the world,” she said. “People generally

keep their problems in their family or under the roof, so to speak.”

For domestic students, the programming of Syracuse Welcome Week aims to get students acclimated to their new surroundings through a mix of social and academic events, said Carrie Grogan Abbott, director of the Office of First Year and Transfer Students.

And though not all of the orientation events are mandatory, students should attempt to attend as many as they can, she said.

Said Abbott: “When students come to Syracuse University, they should be open to everything that our diverse community has to offer, especially Syracuse Welcome.”

The bigger, the better

s students return to campus, they may find signs for the Carousel Center Mall hard to come by. In the beginning of August, the Carousel Mall celebrated its rebranding, replacing all of its signs and officially taking on its new identity as Destiny USA. “We’re extremely excited to begin this new chapter as the mall undergoes many changes,” said Destiny USA executive Sara Wallace.

With the expansion, the mall will occupy a 2.4 million square-foot property, making it the sixth largest mall in the United States, according Destiny USA’s website.

The expansion of Destiny USA is expected to be complete at the beginning of 2013, with more than 260 tenants within its facility, spanning from dining and entertainment to luxury outlets, chain retail and specialty stores, according to an August Destiny USA news release.

Since the expansion began, several new tenants have already opened their businesses.

Cantina Laredo, a Mexican restaurant; The Melting Pot, a fondue-oriented restaurant and Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth are a few that have opened, Wallace said.

Gordon Biersch Brewery Pub, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Funny Bone Comedy Club, AJA nightclub, Regal Premium Experience and Regal IMAX theaters, and Revolutions Entertainment, a bowling and recreation center, are expected to open before the year’s end too, but their opening dates have not yet been announced, Wallace said.

One of the main motivations for the rebranding and expansion of the Carousel Center was the mall’s central location in the Northeast. The major target markets within this area include eastern Canadians, tourists, SU students and regional residents, Wallace said.

The shopping center extends its reach to 5.5 million people within a two and a half hour drive of the facility, according to the release.

Oxford Economics, an economics forecasting consultancy, projects that 29 million people will visit Destiny USA annually, making it the second most visited mall behind Minnesota’s Mall of America, according to the release.

This summer’s development also included a 300-foot-long, climate-controlled pedestrian bridge that links the mall’s west auxiliary parking lot near Solar Street to the second story of the expanded mall, Wallace said.

“The bridge brings a sleek architectural addition to the expansion that enhances the rebranding of Carousel,” she said.

The addition of Cafe Kubal also makes the thrift store unique. Cafe Kubal and the Rescue Mission have worked together in the past.

The two are “like-minded” organizations that are involved in bettering the community, so the opportunity to work together seemed like a great fit, Poda said.

“We think the idea of thrift store shopping and being able to grab your coffee or snack is a neat way to spend some time,” Poda said.

If parents are in town, and students want to shop, their parents can sit and have a cup of coffee in the meantime, she added. Or, if students are running to class and grab a beverage, they’ll make a note to check out 3fifteen at a later time.

Though 3fifteen is targeted toward a new

audience, it will operate like the other Thrifty Shopper stores, with all proceeds going back to the Rescue Mission, Loojune said.

“The mission hasn’t changed. It’s just that this store is specifically catered toward the college-age market,” she said.

The store will also provide an opportunity for students in the Syracuse community to give back. Whether students choose to volunteer their time working at the store or donate merchandise, there are several ways for students to get involved and help out a good cause, Herbst said.

This year, the Rescue Mission will celebrate its 125th anniversary. Poda, director of marketing for the organization, said this makes it the perfect time to open 3fifteen.

“The fact that we’re opening 3fifteen this year is really significant because it shows how we’re expanding,” she said. “We’re reaching out to a new group, who will ultimately help The Rescue Mission with our efforts to end homelessness and hunger, so that’s very important to us.”

Through research, The Rescue Mission found that thrift store shopping is popular among students. So when a property became available in Marshall Square Mall, it made sense to seize the opportunity, Poda said.

“We knew that the enrollment at Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF was high and that we would have a great customer population there,” Poda said. “It all just kind of came together.” cffabris@syr.edu

n paper, college is a place for higher education. It is a forum for learning and improving oneself — a place to change for the better.

While these ideas are ultimately true, when said alone, they paint an idyllic picture of a place that many people know differently. In the process of bettering oneself, college also provides an opportunity to misstep: to make mistakes, take the wrong classes, dance with the wrong partners and choose every single major except the right one.

Or it can be a place to find inspiration in a classroom, to fall in love with a precocious stranger and figure out who you want to be. Only one thing is really inevitable on campus: every student is going to have to try something for the first time. The opportunities, for better or worse, are endless.

First hookup hazards It’s all fun and games until your friend gets lost on the dance floor.

Clea Nievera, a junior psychology major, learned this lesson the hard way her freshman year.

After 30 minutes of unsuccessful party hopping, Nievera and her friends ended up at the Syracuse University chapter of Theta Chi. Nievera was not pleased with the delay but proceeded on with the night, hopping on to the dance floor to have some fun with her friends.

It didn’t quite happen like that.

“Next thing you know, I can’t find her at all,” Nievera said. “I started panicking.”

Nievera had just seen her friend dancing with one of the fraternity brothers but after searching the floor, could not find her anywhere. Giving up on the main party arena, she went to search the rooms.

Students use Federal Work-Study program to earn income

When most students arrive on campus, finding a job isn’t usually first on their lists of things to do. But Charlotte Horton, now a junior, made it a priority as a freshman.

photographer, has been employed since her freshman year, when she worked in Brockway Dining Center through Syracuse University’s work-study program.

Since then, she has worked in Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center last year and eventually started working at the Carrier Dome Con-

cessions stands during football and basketball games.

“It’s important that Syracuse gives students the opportunity to easily work for money,” Horton said. “Not all of our student population comes from wealthy homes or homes that can worry about money (aside from) tuition.”

Work-study is a federally funded program whose main purpose is to aid students with paying for school.

If applicable, students are awarded an amount of money, usually anywhere from $2,500-2,700, which they work to earn, said Camille Donabella, manager of SU’s Student Employment Services. For a college student, it’s a

regular job with regular paychecks.

The SU work-study program places about 6,000 students in jobs on- and off-campus every year. The program usually has employees working about 10-15 hours a week, Donabella said. As employees of the university, students can earn $7.25, minimum wage, or

as much as $9.60 an hour – it depends on where they work.

“Syracuse provides work-study for all types of schedules,” Horton said.

Some of the jobs available are in dining halls, Carrier Dome Concessions, the library, the bookstore, Recreation Services and residential security. Options are tailored to students’ needs, Donabella said.

Off-campus jobs are also available. The university has partnerships with a number of non-profit agencies, including the Upstate University Hospital, and other agencies and daycare centers in the area.

“There’s a twofold benefit of having a workstudy,” Donabella said. “The first one is that you are able to earn a paycheck to pay for books and supplies and living expenses. But it’s also a great way to build your resume, build your work experience and help you in the future.”

“But work-study does more than help students earn a little extra cash for school,” Donabella said. “It helps to build character and teach time management.”

Said Donabella: “A lot of students come here with very little job experience. It’s good to understand what it’s like to manage your time.

Necessary tips to survive life as a freshman on campus Don’t wear your lanyard or Class of 2016 shirts.

It’s good to have pride in your school, but hold off on the shirt for at least another year.

Don’t travel to events or parties in large packs. Unless you want to get yelled at from cars, avoid it at all costs.

Don’t hook up with your resident adviser or someone on your floor. A year is a long time, and you are about to redefine awkward for you and your floor-mates.

Don’t eat out every night. You will be two weeks in and every cent of your college savings will be gone. Your parents got you that meal

plan for a reason.

Don’t wear heels to a party that’s far away in the winter. Carry them at your side while you trod along in your practical boots. Seriously.

Don’t attempt real work on the first floor of E.S. Bird Library. Either move up a few floors or prepare to be social butterflied by the occupants of Club Bird.

Don’t feel flattered when you’re called “pretty lady” walking down Marshall Street. He says that to everyone. Calm down.

Don’t get stuck at a party on South Campus after 3 a.m. That bus isn’t coming back any-

time soon.

Don’t use an out-of-state ID at Chuck’s. It’ll still be there when you’re older. We promise.

Don’t pretend you know where a building is when you actually don’t. It’s better to ask directions than be hopelessly lost.

Don’t walk up and down Euclid asking where the parties are. Odds are no one will tell you.

Don’t have sex with your significant other while your roommate is home. It’s always preferable to give someone a 15-minute sexile than making him or her unwilling first-row spectators.

Don’t go out too early. You may be ready to

party at 9 p.m., but the action doesn’t start until at least 11 p.m. Wandering the street hours too early screams “freshman.”

Don’t send mass texts asking where the party’s at. This may be OK once or twice, but you’ll annoy your friends if you never return the favor. No one likes a clinger.

Don’t get on your RA’s bad side. Even if he or she is a total fun-sucker, he or she is there for a reason. Don’t make enemies right off the bat or you’ll regret it later.

For Christina Fieni, it was a combination of the two.

IST 195: Information Technologies, an introductory class for School of Information Studies students taught by iSchool professor Jeff Rubin, was the class in which Fieni said she “fell in love with technology.” A former magazine journalism and anthropology dual major, Fieni, who was always fascinated by design, grew to love the technology behind the art.

“I switched majors because of that class,” Fieni said. She is currently a junior advertising and information technology dual major.

Fieni becomes reminiscent of her childhood when discussing the class, which made her think about when she took apart her computer to try and figure out how it worked.

Learning the ins and outs of technology under Rubin made her recall this insatiable curiosity.

Fieni mentioned Rubin’s introduction to Java, a coding script used in elements of web design.

“It forced me to challenge myself,” she said.

For those unaccustomed to talking freely about sex, CFS 388: Human Sexuality, taught by professor Joseph Fanelli, might come as a bit of a shock.

In the eyes of junior computer engineering major Nathan Garland, it was a much welcomed one.

Garland took the class with friends and loved the relevance of it. Because of the professor’s natural humor and ability to keep the course engaging, he was able to teach students about real issues, said Garland.

He remembered one class in particular in which Professor Fanelli brought in several transgender speakers to talk to the class about sexuality in their lives.

“It put everything that we were being taught right there in front of us,” Garland said, “with real world examples and experiences going on.”

In a part of the class, students get to choose between several options to count toward their final grade: going to couples therapy, writing a term paper or attending a weekly discussion group. Garland opted for the latter and was not disappointed.

“Being able to talk with other people and get their opinions on relationships was really rewarding,” Garland said.

“This guy was like…really ugly,” Nievera said. She was shocked to find her friend in such an unfortunate situation.

Though Syracuse is notorious for its winters, some of the city and school’s best activities fall a few months earlier. Check out some enticing possibilities during your first few months as an Orange.

If you’re coming to Syracuse from a big city, then you’re used to lots of opportunities for live theater. Though Syracuse doesn’t have Broadway, the city’s Oncenter and Syracuse Stage offer plenty of shows starring both students and professionals to feed your theatrical appetites.

1. White Water Rafting

Syracuse may be a city, but just outside its borders are many outdoor activities for students to partake in. One of the most common for students to experience in the fall is white water rafting, sponsored by Syracuse University’s Department of Recreation Services.

Grab your new floor-mates and sign up on the SU Recreation Services website. The trip is $35 per person.

Freshmen will quickly realize that using all of their meal swipes per week is basically an unobtainable goal. Take the Connective Corridor to The Warehouse Cafe in the downtown building’s basement to stock up on chips, cereal and bottled water, as well as grab a burger, wrap and fries from the cafe’s grill. It exchanges your meal swipes to their equivalent monetary amount to rid you of your excess swipes.

2. Zac Brown Band SU students are lucky enough to have live music on the campus itself. University Union will bring DJ Calvin Harris and rapper Childish Gambino for Juice Jam on Sept. 9. But if you’re feeling a little more country, be sure to get tickets for the Zac Brown Band concert at the Carrier Dome on Nov. 18. The tickets, starting at $29.50, are a bit pricier than a typical UU concert, the concert will surely not disappoint.

5. The Great New York State Fair Take advantage fast. The Great New York State Fair, packed with rides, food, concerts and more, only comes around once a year. Take a free university-provided bus down to the fair, check out the attractions and grab some grub.

It’s electric Carrier Dome atmosphere energizes, unites student body

nthony Herbert vividly remembers his first game at the Carrier Dome.

Last September, Herbert watched as the Syracuse football team opened its season with a 15-point comeback win over Wake Forest.

But the Orange’s play on the field isn’t what stands out from his experience that Thursday night.

“After we won, I never got so many hugs from random people before in my life,” said Herbert, a sophomore information management and technology major. “That was probably the best way you could come in.”

The Carrier Dome, the largest on-campus domed stadium in the country, has become synonymous with Syracuse. Since 1980, the arena has played host to a variety of milestones in Orange football and basketball history for three decades. And for students and the local community, it has also served as home to countless memories cheering for the Orange.

The venue, which has a capacity of nearly 50,000 for football games, will host its first game of the 2012 season for the football team’s season opener on Sept. 1 against Northwestern. On that Saturday afternoon, freshmen will get their first taste of the Carrier Dome experience while upperclassmen carry on the student section’s game-day traditions.

Senior Kacie Leonard grew up in nearby Camillus, N.Y. and frequently made the 15-minute ride for Orange basketball games. When she first walked inside the Carrier Dome more than 10 years ago, she recalled feeling overwhelmed by the size of the stadium, but she soon fell in love with the arena.

And besides the photography program at SU, Leonard said sporting events were the main reason she wanted to attend Syracuse.

Orange players to keep an eye on heading into 2012 season Ryan Nassib

graduate student | quarterback Nassib enters his third season as Syracuse’s starting quarterback. He’s coming off a 2011 season that was statistically one of the best in program history. Nassib set the singleseason program record in completions with 259 and passing yards with 2,685 while tying the top mark for touchdown passes with 22.

Still, Nassib piled up most of his gaudy numbers in the Orange’s five wins, throwing for 14 touchdowns compared to one interception.

Iin the team’s seven losses, the quarterback managed just eight touchdowns and threw eight interceptions.

Nassib will need to be sharp for all 12 games for SU to rebound and return to a bowl game this year. His performance is crucial this season as the Orange is inexperienced at running back and on the offensive line.

Ashton Broyld

freshman | running back The freshman from Rochester has spent much of preseason camp working out with the running backs.

Though he has also taken

reps at quarterback and wide receiver since arriving at SU for spring practice, Broyld will likely be used out of the backfield for the Orange. He’ll also line up in the Wildcat formation, taking direct snaps with an option to run or pass.

The versatile freshman spent the 2011 season at Milford Academy in New Berlin, N.Y., throwing for six touchdowns and running for six more. As a senior at Rush-Henrietta High School in Rochester, Broyld was named the 2010 New York State Class AA Player of the Year. He threw for 1,961 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 1,540 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Alec Lemon,

senior | wide receiver Lemon set a single-season program record with 68 catches last season. The senior finished with 834 yards receiving and six touchdown catches. Lemon returns as Nassib’s top target in 2012 after undergoing shoulder surgery during the offseason. He is currently receiving treatment.

Lemon has improved each season at SU, and the Orange will need him to step up in his final year. The team has stressed a need to make big plays offensively and the wide receiving corps

will be a key to achieving that goal. It starts with the veteran Lemon and fellow senior Marcus Sales, who missed 2011 due to suspension.

Jay Bromley,

junior | defensive tackle

Bromley will anchor a defensive line that lost Mikhail Marinovich and Chandler Jones to graduation. With Deon Goggins moving to defensive end, Bromley enters the season as the team’s top defensive tackle.

After making just eight tackles in 12 games of action as a freshman, he had a standout sophomore season in 2011. He finished last season with 32 tackles – including 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He started 10 games and made at least one tackle in all 12 games for the Orange.

On an SU defense that finished sixth in the Big East in rushing defense with 128.2 yards allowed per game and last in sacks with 28, Bromley and his teammates on the line have plenty to improve on in 2012.

Dan Vaughan,

graduate student | linebacker

returning tackler, accounting for 72 stops in 2011. It was a breakout season for Vaughan, who managed just 10 tackles combined in 25 games the previous two seasons.

Now, Vaughan leads a deep group of linebackers as the Orange prepare for the 2012 season.

Vaughan, an outside linebacker, is among six players battling for time at linebacker going into the season opener against Northwestern on Sept. 1.

Shamarko Thomas, senior, strong safety Thomas is one of the Orange’s top playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. He was third on the team in tackles with 67 last season.

SU will lean heavily on his experience in a secondary that was burned by top receivers time and time again in 2011. The departure of free safety Phillip Thomas, who led the team in tackles and interceptions in 10 games of action last season, leaves some uncertainty surrounding the secondary. And Shamarko Thomas’ play and leadership will go a long way toward any improvement shown by the SU defense this season.

Carrier Dome The Carrier Dome has 49,262 seats and is the largest domed stadium in the Northeast. The facility, which opened Sept. 20, 1980, serves as the home to the football team, the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. This past season, the softball team also played two games in the stadium for the first time in program history.

The Dome has also played host to NCAA Tournament rounds, including the 2010 Sweet 16 and Elite 8. The stadium has had regional and state competitions in football and NBA preseason games.

Tennity Ice Pavilion Syracuse’s ice rink has a listed capacity of 350 but has seen crowds of up to 511 during the first

four years of the women’s ice hockey program.

The pavilion opened in 2000 for recreational purposes and now serves as the home of the Orange’s Division-I women’s hockey team. Still, it’s unlikely Syracuse will field a Division-I men’s hockey team any time soon, as Tennity’s capacity is not large enough to hold the number of fans needed to generate sufficient revenue to offset the costs of scholarships, salaries, equipment, transportation and ice.

J.S. Coyne Field Coyne Field is home to the women’s field hockey team and is the largest outdoor sports facility on Syracuse’s campus. It includes a press box, a concession area and bleachers capable of holding 2,700 people. The field, which opened in 1975, has also been used for football practice in the

fall and men’s and women’s lacrosse practice in the spring. The field had its AstroTurf replaced with Astro 12, a new artificial surface, in 2005.

Soccer Stadium The SU Soccer Stadium is part of the Lampe Athletics Complex and is home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The stadium has a grass playing field, lights for night competition and bleachers extending the length of the field, which can hold up to 1,500 people. The stadium, situated behind Manley Field House, first opened in 1996.

Women’s Building Gym A in the Women’s Building serves as the practice facility and home court for the Syracuse women’s volleyball team. The twoand-a-half story gymnasium has seating on the floor level and in a balcony overlooking the court. The entire building at the foot of Mount Olympus off Comstock Avenue has a capacity of 3,000 and opened in 1953.

Skytop Softball Stadium The softball team practices and competes at the Skytop Softball Stadium, located on South Campus. It opened in 2000 and has a capacity of 650 people. The outfield stretches 200 feet down the lines and 215 feet to straightaway center. The stadium is outfitted with lights, making it available for day and night games.

“I wish that I could be in the student section forever because there’s so much more energy than being in another part of the Dome,” she said. “The student section is a lot more fun than being a normal fan.”

Chloe Slade, a senior communications major, said the atmosphere of the student section is unlike anything she has experienced at professional sporting events.

Sitting with thousands of classmates, as opposed to thousands of strangers, adds an element of camaraderie, Slade said.

“It’s really exciting because you’re with people your own age,” she said. “If you are sitting in the student section on game day, you know that you’re all there for the same reason.

“You’re having a good time and hoping that Syracuse wins the game.”

In basketball, SU is among the nation’s leaders in attendance each season.

The Dome holds the record for largest oncampus attendance at a game with 34,616, set Feb. 27, 2010, against Villanova.

Leonard, then a freshman, attended the Big East matchup that Saturday night two years ago, witnessing the Orange’s 95-77 victory over the Wildcats.

“It was really exciting,” she said. “There were so many people sitting like all the way back in the Dome. It’s amazing to see that fans

are that dedicated and come support the Orange no matter what, even if they’re sitting far away.”

Besides taking in the action on the field and court, recurring chants and traditions are also memorable parts of each game.

Slade said she enjoys seeing the fans show enthusiasm by painting their faces and bodies.

Herbert looks forward to the “O” chant during the playing of the national anthem. And Leonard said she takes pride in constantly making noise during the games.

“I don’t like when there is ever a quiet moment,” she said. “I always try to start the ‘let’s go Orange’ cheer. It’s fun just being as loud and as big a fan as possible.”

Slade recalls going to her first game as a freshman with several students from her floor, which is the “typical freshmen thing to do.” She took plenty of pictures, she said — more than she had ever snapped before — to remember the experience.

And Leonard’s just looking forward to seeing the freshmen join the student section and add to the energy at SU’s games this year.

Intramural sports keep students competing

Ten freshmen from Flint and Day halls needed to find their group’s identity. Pressed on time to decide their intramural basketball team name, they chose “Taylor Gang.”

They soon all became close friends.

“Taylor Gang,” a name inspired by rapper Wiz Khalifa, came together in fall 2011 and had immediate success, advancing to the intramural league’s championship game.

“Everyone was shocked,” sports management major Javier Morel said of his team’s early success.

The Department of Recreational Services at Syracuse University offers students the chance to play competitive sports while making friends during the busy school year. The department will offer 16 intramural sports during the 2012-13 school year. The fall semester sports include basketball, broomball, flag football, outdoor soccer, softball, doubles and singles tennis and volleyball.

Forming a team with residence hall floormates is a great way for students to get to know the people they’re living with, said Nadine Essel, assistant director of Recreation Services.

Even if a student doesn’t sign up as part of a team, he or she can be put on a list for teams in need of a player.

“Anybody can play,” said Essel, who runs the intramural program. “Anybody who wants to get involved can. We have students competing at all different experience levels.”

For students, no matter the experience level, intramural sports are about the fun, friendships and memories formed during the season.

Long Nguyen played soccer last year to stay active during his first year of college. Nguyen’s team lost in its semifinal match, but he said he played for fun.

“It was nice to get some friendly competition going with the tournament and group-play games,” said Nguyen, a sophomore mechanical engineering major. “We tried to take it kind of seriously, but in the end we all knew it was just for fun and that it didn’t really mean anything if we lost.”

Cory Cooper has played both intramural flag football and basketball.

Cooper remembers playing in the championship flag football game his freshman year, calling it a great experience.

An information management and techology major and member of the “Taylor Gang,” Cooper said he’s noticed students from diverse backgrounds bonding by playing intramurals. That social aspect is another benefit Essel highlights for students who participate.

“It’s good to try something new,” Essel said. “You can work on social skills and getting along with people and learn sportsman-

ship.”

For Cooper, Morel and the rest of the team, their bond as friends translated to cohesion on the court.

The players stuck together but, as sophomores, changed their team name to “Jet Mafia,” a reference to their fast-paced style of play and their friendship.

Jeremy Ceille, who handled the team’s jersey orders, acts as the manager while also playing.

Ceille said also played intramural flag football the past two years and won the championship his freshman season.

The entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises and geography dual major said his favorite aspect of intramural basketball is the competition level, which serves as extra motivation to win.

Still, winning is only a small part of the experience.

“I think it’s important to remember that the goal is to just have fun. Getting too serious with it can really ruin the enjoyment of the game for not only your own team but the teams that you play against,” Nguyen said. jmhyber@syr.edu

Week at Fort Drum emphasizes teamwork, communication

FORT DRUM, N.Y. — Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley stood in front of Syracuse’s players and delivered an impassioned speech that challenged them to forget last season.

His address was a sudden introduction to a militaristic style of thinking.

Milley, who’s done tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan, drew off his experiences to convey his message.

“Last year wasn’t so good as I understand it, but this is a different year. In warfare, you can’t worry about the battle you had yesterday,” Milley said before Monday’s practice. “You’ve got to worry about today, tomorrow and the next day.”

His speech kicked off the Orange’s week of preseason camp at Fort Drum, an Army post 80 miles north of Syracuse. Head coach Doug Marrone took his team there so it could focus on football with little outside distraction. Coming off a disappointing 5-7 season that ended in a fivegame losing streak, he hopes the experience helps the program take a step forward.

“The team’s together quite a bit, more so than when we’re back at Syracuse, which I expect to help our football team,” Marrone said. “And the work we’re putting in, they understand that there’s a whole lot more work going on around us than what’s going on on this football field, and we’re just trying to keep up.”

The players lived in barracks, went through military-style training and participated in activities designed to improve leadership and communication. Every night, they ate with soldiers to learn more about their lives and share parts of their own.

It was a collision of two very different worlds.

Capt. Jason Davidson is an assistant coach for the Mighty Mites, Fort Drum’s Pop Warner football team for kids 7-9. He had a chance to watch a team he might not see otherwise.

And maybe even pick up a few plays here and there.

“I think it’s a great deal, especially with the kids up here,” Davidson said. “They get the opportunity to see the next echelon of football practice, plays, and they get to see their positions. This is a reinforcement we can see with the kids.”

Last Wednesday, the team divided into two to run through several drills and activities.

The offense used an engagement skills trainer, putting the players in virtual combat and forcing them to communicate to take out the

enemy soldiers running and firing at them.

Lying on their stomachs, they shot their rifles over sandbags into the screen in front of them. From the end of the firing line, Capt. Zach Johnson repeatedly reminded the players to talk to each other.

It all translates to the football field.

The drill required the same type of communication an offensive line needs to maintain. The enemy soldiers appearing over the hills of the desert were like defenders trying to sack the quarterback.

Syracuse guard Zack Chibane saw the connection clearly.

“We were lined up in different spots, and we had targets,” Chibane said. “There’s definitely a

football relation there.”

The defense’s drills emphasized strength and leadership. The drills involved everything from pulling a truck to a simulation of carrying a wounded soldier to medical help, and they also involved moving heavy logs a distance of about 20 feet, only being able to step on tires.

“Coach brought us here for a reason. He really wanted us to come together as a unit and be accountable for whatever we do,” defensive tackle Davon Walls said. “I believe we’re going to do what we have to do.”

Every night, they had a chance to hear from soldiers who have or will put their lives on the line for their country and who rely on the bond and trust among them to survive.

“They were telling us teamwork is first,” running back Prince-Tyson Gulley said. “They were telling us how they put themselves first in missions and everything. What this is, all it does is transfer right from the field.”

For Syracuse, it was a week to focus on football and little else. How the week affected the players as a football team will ultimately be determined on the field this season.

But for now, the players have a new outlook on the military and themselves. It’s a week that will be difficult to forget.

“It’s just a good experience,” Gulley said.

“You never know if you can get this experience again, and for us to have this, this is good.” cjiseman@syr.edu

Professional teams provide entertainment in Syracuse Syracuse Silver Knights Indoor soccer isn’t the low-scoring game that its outdoor counterpart is, and Syracuse’s indoor pro soccer team proves it. The Syracuse Silver Knights averaged just more than six goals per game last season. They broke out for 23 points three times during its inaugural season in the Major Indoor Soccer League. There are two- and three-point shots in the MISL. The Silver Knights finished third in the Eastern Division last year, and the team is looking to improve in 2012-13.

The Silver Knights play their 13 home games at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena at 515 Montgomery St. in downtown Syracuse. The season begins in November and runs through March 2013. Single-game tickets cost between $15 and $17.

Syracuse Crunch Sports fans in the Syracuse area don’t have to travel far to get their pro hockey fix.

As the primary development affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, fans get the unique chance to see some of pro hockey’s best young players before they reach the NHL. Twenty-two of the Crunch’s 26 players have contracts with its parent team.

In 2010, the Crunch made history by staging the first minor league outdoor game. The Mirabito Outdoor Classic pitted the Crunch against the Binghamton Senators in front of 21,508 fans at the New York State Fairgrounds, right outside of Syracuse in Geddes.

The team plays its home games at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, which holds 6,159 fans for hockey games. Single-game tickets range from $14 to $18.

Syracuse Chiefs Professional baseball in Syracuse has a storied history that dates back to 1877. Today, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals calls the city of Syracuse home.

Before they became stars in the nation’s capital, recent top prospects Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg were Syracuse Chiefs. And before the team became the last stop for future Nationals players in 2009, it was the affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays (1978-2008) and the New York Yankees (1967-77).

The Chiefs haven’t made the playoffs since 1995, but they have developed young talent now making a difference in Washington. Nearly 14,000 fans packed into a sold-out venue to see each of Strasburg’s three starts in 2010. This past spring, they got a glimpse of Harper before he was called up on April 27.

Syracuse competes in the International League, which boasts Triple-A affiliates from 13 other major league teams, from April to September. Alliance Bank Stadium seats just more than 11,000 fans and is located directly across the street from Carousel Mall. Tickets range from $12 to $20.
