Syracuse University Athletics has made the decision to pull musical act Ace Hood from this year’s Orange Madness, University Union announced on Sunday.

The rapper was scheduled to perform at the event on Friday in the Carrier Dome.

SU Athletics approached UU earlier this semester to collaborate with the organization in booking a musical artist for Orange Madness, as UU has relationships with agents, said Mitchell Mason, UU’s public relations director. After UU provided a list of possible performance options, SU Athletics selected Ace Hood to perform a set at the Dome.

Spina begins tenure as interim chancellor

Syverud will begin his tenure as chancellor of SU on Jan. 13. He is currently the dean of the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis.

Shutdown Cultural celebration prevents senator’s talk

The SU South Asian Students Association hosts its annual Navratri Garba Raas event — a ceremony to celebrate the Navratri Festival — on Saturday. The festival is celebrated five times a year, during specific moon phases and seasons. To celebrate the holiday, students who attended the event danced garba, a traditional dance in Indian culture. Nineteen-time Emmy award winner John Stossel will be speaking at Syracuse University on Monday in his lecture titled “Freedom and Its Enemies.”

show on Fox Business and was an investigative reporter on ABC News, will be speaking on what’s he’s learned as a reporter. The lecture is hosted by the College Republicans, and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Grant Auditorium.

Through his journalistic experience, Stossel said he has shifted from

advocating government regulations to watching government regulation worsen conditions.

“I was a liberal consumer reporter who won these Emmys bashing business and calling for regulation,” he said. “After seeing how regulations enriched lawyers and just slowed life down, I just tried to rethink.”

James Ward, chairman of the College Republicans, described Stossel as a reporter who has a “hard-lined style with facts” and said attendants can expect a “powerful argument” concerning government regulation and the nation.

Ward added that SU students would have the opportunity to learn from Stossel’s political and journalistic expertise if they attend the lecture.

He called himself an “enemy of freedom” during his time as a consumer watchdog reporter with ABC News. Stossel was the co-anchor of

“20/20,” and had several specials, including “Sick in America: Whose Body is it, Anyway?” “Stupid in America” and “John Stossel Goes to Washington.”

Ward also said Stossel’s point of view as a libertarian provides a different perspective on the role of government and its role in everyday life, compared to both Democrats and Republicans.

Stossel describes himself as a libertarian and advocates for the reduction of government regulation, he said.

Stossel said he would be discussing the idea of “enemies of freedom” in the lecture, which he believes to be politicians, bureaucrats and the government force.

Stossel has also written several books, including “No, They Can’t: Why Government Fails-But Individuals Succeed,” “Give Me a Break:

How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media...” and “Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel -- Why Everything You Know Is Wrong.”

Stossel will also speak about the government shutdown, which began Oct. 1.

“I think we ought to shut more down, because we’re going broke and much of what the government does is harmful,” Stossel said.

He added that SU students should go to the event to learn how government regulations work, and how they could be hurting the country instead of helping. He also invites students who disagree with his point of view to attend.

Stossel to present solution to maintain American freedom The American credo is more than just life. It is life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Thus, it is hard to say whether Islamic terrorism or the Transportation Safety Administration is more dangerous to American freedom in the long run.

Undoubtedly, in the short run, extremists who are ready to kill and die for their cause pose a threat, but the TSA will likely live on to limit our freedom long after the terrorists are terminated.

Libertarian guru John Stossel is giving a talk called “Freedom and Its Enemies” at Syracuse University on Monday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

For freedom lovers, Grant Auditorium on that night is the ideal destination.

To be sure, without life, one can have neither liberty nor engage in the pursuit of happiness because he or she is dead. However, individuals

LETTER TO THE EDITOR living with reduced liberty and a limited right to make choices in their own interests suffer a lower quality of life, and if enough liberty is taken from individuals, life becomes suffering.

The TSA is just one example of the libertyfor-security trade that members of both political parties often expect Americans to make. Surrender some more of your liberties, and we will keep you alive.

Stossel has the solution: Americans should reject the trade off.

The statists among Republicans, with the PATRIOT Act, want government agents to hear Americans’ phone calls and see what Americans read. The statists among Democrats, with

various central planning schemes, want government bureaucrats to make more of Americans’ choices. Edward Snowden and Obamacare revealed that the current administration is a horrible mixture of both.

Stossel will likely assert that Americans should take none of it from either party, meaning his message is for Democrats and Republicans. He will likely argue that Americans can have their liberty back without risking their lives and more importantly, that increasing liberty improves life.

During a speech, Senator Rand Paul assumed the TSA-full-body-scanner stance. With his hands in the air and legs apart, he asked, “Is this the pose of a free man?” Stossel would say absolutely not.

Obama administration shows hypocrisy in shutdown

T

he Obama administration is doing what it can to make sure the effects of the government shutdown are felt by the American public, doing everything from shutting down national parks to suspending death benefits for the families of fallen soldiers.

Of course, all the politicians responsible have managed to keep paying themselves.

Despite all the scare tactics, only 17 percent of the government is shut down, according to the Congressional Budget Office. With the rhetoric being pushed by the administration, you would think the country has been pushed to anarchy.

When Republicans forced this shutdown, they did so to protect their constituents from the grips of Obamacare, which will force Americans to buy unwanted and unaffordable medical insurance policies that provide poor coverage.

You probably know someone who has already lost their current health care plan or seen their coverage costs go up.

The same can be said for someone who is seeing their hours cut, or being laid off altogether, due to the harmful policies Obamacare imposes on businesses.

Still, the spotlight has shifted from this terrible policy to Republicans, who are being blamed for every effect of this “shutdown,” aided by the gross exaggerations of the Obama administration.

The shutdown isn’t the only subject of the administration’s scare tactics: Obama has

the last free american threatened that if Congress does not raise the debt ceiling by Oct. 17, he will default on the debt owed by the U.S. government.

Such a threat has no basis in reality, and is a testimony to the president’s willingness to hold the American public hostage in order to achieve his goals.

First off, there is no reason the United States would ever default, debt increase or not. The government brings in $250 billion in monthly tax revenues, and its current interest payment on its debt is only $20 billion per month, according to The Washington Times.

Secondly, when Republicans argue that a debt increase should only be met with spending cuts, they are met with widespread heckling by the administration and congressional Democrats.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said shortly before the government went into shutdown mode that “The cupboard is bare.

There’s no more cuts to make.”

Pelosi also called Republicans “legislative arsonists,” and days later Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) ridiculed his opponents as

“Tea Party anarchists.”

It doesn’t take an expert to see through all these slanderous accusations and understand the extent to which our government spends wastefully and needlessly on behalf of special interests and lobbying groups.

In fact, once upon a time, even a young senator named Barack Obama understood the irresponsible spending of government and its negative and lasting effects on the American people.

When the U.S. government raised the debt ceiling in 2006, Senator Obama said that in doing so, “Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

Back then, Senator Obama opposed raising the debt ceiling from $8.1 trillion to $8.9 trillion. Today, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the national debt is estimated at $17 trillion, nearly doubling after five years of his reign.

I guess a lot changes once you become president. You have to make sure all those special interests get the money they want, and that all those who contributed to your causes and campaigns get what you promised them.

You can call it hypocrisy, or false pretenses, or just flat out lies, but maybe Obama said it best himself: what we have here is one giant failure of leadership.

Media exaggerates hook-up culture, should not be attributed to girls’ low self-esteem Hook-up culture is an over-exaggerated concept within this generation.

It is so exaggerated, in fact, that it has been unreasonably attributed to the self-esteem issues college-age women face.

Recently, The Daily Beast’s Women in the World blog reported on a Boston College study that found girls have lower self-esteem in college. Hook-up culture is being blamed for this decline in self-confidence, according to the blog.

Females should not be singled out as the only ones affected by this “nostrings-attached” hook-up behavior that is associated with members of Generation Y. Both males and females play a role within a casual relationship, and the feelings both sexes have about the behavior should be considered.

Social media and the ability it allows us to “over share” contribute to this lack of self-esteem.

EDITORIAL by the daily orange editorial board The concept of random hookups becomes normalized when members of this generation share their sexual experiences through blog posts. Mobile applications like Tinder also enable the convenience of hook-up culture.

The fear of missing out on the model of romance portrayed on social media negatively affects both college-age men and women. Both take the inability to find these types of relationships personally and feel unworthy because of it.

Because of this digital availability and transparency, hook-up culture is supposedly becoming a definitive characteristic of this generation.

Unfortunately, the over-hyperbolic portrayal of hook-up culture by the media does not quell this inadequacy

among young people.

The media’s portrayal of hook-up culture, such as an article published

by The New York Times titled “Sex on Campus: She Can Play that Game, Too,” details how women are leading the movement of hooking up. These stories overshadow the articles that cite the truth: Not all millennials are hooking up.

While hook-up culture has been primarily associated with millennials, it is a trend that has shaped relationships for decades.

A study released by the University of Portland during the summer compared the reported sexual behavior of college students between 1988-1996 and 2002-2010.

The results concluded college students have less sex now than their peers did 15 years ago.

“No strings attached” is nothing new. “Hooking up” is a thing of the past and the present.

Celebrity feuds demean music, allow media to negatively portray women

n this day and age, we live for conflict. We feel like we belong by aligning ourselves with certain sides. The digital age is a huge contributor to this. Information spreads rapidly and is taken out of context, particularly among celebrities.

Breakout artist Lorde has the number one song in the country this week, according to Billboard Hot 100. Her music is celebrated as mature, but with youthful energy and perspective. She seems to be the polar opposite of her fellow music queens, like Taylor Swift.

In recent interviews, Lorde juxtaposed herself to Taylor Swift.

She described how Swift is a bad role model for young girls because she presents herself as “f lawless and unattainable.”

Lorde’s comments resulted in a huge backlash from bloggers and social media. They painted her as

Even Joe Jonas had something to say, tweeting, “Hey @lordemusic you say call me Queen B but you shouldn’t be attacking all the true Queen B-tches’s #respect.”

Lorde issued an apology via her Tumblr page. She backpedaled, apologizing to Swift and focusing her critique on the music industry’s problematic emphasis on physical perfection.

The media and their marketing teams create dichotomies of good, bad, wholesome and alternative women. We then feel like we need to choose between women like Swift and Lorde as those to aspire to.

Swift represents the wholesome ideal while Lorde represents the exotic alternative.

Now, instead of “Are you a Jackie or a Marilyn,” young fans are asking, “Are you a Lorde or are

Why do we have this mentality? Artists send important personal messages in their music. But rather than focusing on their art, media and audiences are more focused on the feuds that take place among celebrities.

Lorde made a particularly interesting comment during an interview with MTV on Oct. 8. She said, “I think there’s a funny culture in music… that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn’t 100-percent good, you’re a ‘hater,’ even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds

Lorde is right. The music we love forms ideologies for young fans to align themselves with.

Musical choices can influence how you speak, what you wear and inevitably determine the music you choose to ignore. But this is all lost in celebrity feuds.

As Lorde said, if you’re not 100 percent behind an artist or what he or she produces, you’re automatically a “hater.”

The Internet is a buffer in feuding. It makes fights virtual with few tangible and negative results. The Internet also serves as a platform for huge volumes of information about these feuds. All of these are ingredients for polarization in fans and media perception.

When this polarization happens, the digital nature of all this information allows for it to be taken out of

context, rapidly spread around and packaged as a “feud” and a sorry excuse for news.

It’s more problematic that media construct young women as unsupportive of each other, fans and artists alike.

A “celebrity feud” may make an interesting feature on E! News, but they are socially constructed, hyperbolized and destructive to women’s progress in the music industry.

Both Taylor Swift and Lorde have important things to say in their music and otherwise. When they are constructed as simple, feuding foes, it takes away the credibility that young people have to raise their voice, speak and ultimately matter.

Along with those classes, students studying with the Sea Education Association Semester will be learning conservation and social sciences, said Kimberly Schulz, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry contact for SEA Semester.

The program requires 17 credits during the course of the semester or 12 credits during the summer, she added. Students spend the first six weeks in Woods Hole, Mass., developing independent projects that will be worked on during the time on the ship, she said.

Because ESF is affiliated with the SEA Semester, there are no application fees for students who are interested, Schulz said.

Once accepted, students can apply for a scholarship of up to $4,000 from the school, she added. Each program costs a different amount, but most ESF students do not pay the full price, she said.

At sea, students learn many skills, including

Students come up with some very interesting projects, Schulz said. She provided an example of a student who previously studied on the SEA Semester, who looked at the relationship between water temperature and El Nino in the Pacific Ocean.

The trip is made up of 20-25 students on one boat, with the captain capable of allowing more, if students are extremely qualified for the

program, she added. Students share rooms with bunk beds and store their items in shelves above the beds, she said.

Above deck on the SSV Corwith Cramer is a lab and a navigation system, and below deck is where the captain, chief scientist, three science mates and three sailing mates reside, she said. Students alternate in helping prepare meals and keeping watch with a sailing mate, she said.

“It was the first time I had such practical experience of learning marine biology,” said Schulz, who previously studied on a SEA Semester. “Right in the middle of the Caribbean, there was a bloom of iridescent jellyfish.

operations to create a “smooth transition” for Syverud. The Board of Trustees Executive Committee approved the appointment of Vice Chancellor and Provost Eric Spina as interim chancellor on Thursday. Spina’s appointment is effective Monday.

Syverud begins his tenure as chancellor on Jan. 13. He is currently the dean of the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis.

In October 2012, Cantor said she would leave SU when her contract expired in June 2014. During the summer, it was announced that Cantor would become chancellor of Rutgers-Newark on Jan. 1.

Cantor, Spina and Syverud discussed having an interim chancellor multiple times, said Chairman Richard Thompson. The decision to have an interim chancellor was made, he said, because it will allow Cantor to work closely with Syverud.

“If I had thought for a moment this was going to injure the transition, I would have never supported it,” Thompson said. “They all thought it was a great idea because she needs to be thinking about: What are her priorities that she wants to communicate to the incoming chancellor? What does she want to do to help sustain her very positive contributions?”

“He’s going to make his own decisions on how he works day-to-day, where his priorities are and who he meets with, when he meets with them and how long he meets with them,” said Thompson, “but she really wants to focus on policy.”

Cantor said being able to step back and have Spina become interim chancellor will also allow her to tie up key projects and focus on national speaking engagements. “… making sure I have time to be with groups of faculty that I’ve worked with on projects; to make sure I have time for really buttoning up connections to key alums and fundraising things that are on the books; and then to really be at Kent’s disposal,” she added.

“I’d expect there will be big issues, and I expect to be talking to Chancellor Cantor and Chancellor-designate Syverud to make certain that we are taking into (consideration) the longer term as well as the immediate,” he said. “It will be a lot of back and forth, but there really is a good team of senior leaders on campus. So the idea is to work closely and directly with them.”

Spina said he and Syverud have developed a good relationship in the past couple of months.

It is not unusual for a new chancellor to come in and keep the same provost, especially at SU, he said.

“There’s a natural rhythm with these things,” Spina said. “My sense is that Kent is coming in here knowing there’s a vice chancellor and provost. We’re working well together and he’s not thinking today, ‘What am I going to do?’ He’s trying to understand the institution.”

While it’s Syverud’s decision about who will make up his leadership team, Spina said he hopes to continue to serve and better the university in any way he can — as vice chancellor or a tenured faculty member of the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“I’ve been at Syracuse for 25 years and I really love the place,” Spina said. “If you cut me open, I don’t know if I bleed orange, but there will be some combination of orange and blue.

Men sing for cancer research

He catches the speck of dust and places it on a pink, fuzzy clover for safekeeping. However, the only one who truly believes Horton that there is a city — called Whoville — of people living on this speck of dust is Gertrude McFuzz, the bird with the lone tail feather and her own Dr. Seuss storyline.

It turns out that the Whos that Horton discovers are being sent away for any thought or action that is too strange, like those who choose to

What breast cancer is for women, testicular cancer is for men. While both are life-threatening diseases, campaigns for testicular cancer don’t get as much attention as ones for breast cancer. Otto Tunes decided to help change that.

After becoming a recognized organization in spring 2012, Otto Tunes held its first invitational — a concert featuring other a cappella groups besides themselves — on Saturday evening.

The event included performances by fellow Syracuse University all-male a cappella group Orange Appeal and raised money for the Testicular Cancer Foundation.

The concert raised more than $1,000 for the cause.

The two groups decided to call the concert Cockappella.

“We wanted to try to raise money for something that was relevant to all of us, and what’s more relevant than testicular cancer?” said Tim Cheng, president of Orange Appeal and a senior public relations, policy studies, accounting and finance quadruple major.

Cheng said both groups became invested in the foundation after learning how pertinent testicular cancer was to the college demographic. He said members of both Orange Appeal and Otto Tunes plan on getting tested for testicular cancer this semester.

“For most cases, if you detect it early enough, 99 percent of guys diagnosed with testicular cancer can be cured,” Cheng said.

Orange Appeal, established in 1997 as the first all-male a cappella group on campus, had never before performed onstage with Otto Tunes, besides at the annual A Cappella Afterhours concert.

Jeff Kurkjian, president of Otto Tunes, first approached Cheng about doing a joint concert during the summer. Kurkjian said he was honored to share the stage with such a talented group, and that both organizations learned from each other’s performances.

“We decided to band together as brothers to raise money for a cause, and that cause was the Testicular Cancer Foundation. It’s the No. 1 cancer for males between the ages of 15-35, which is right in our wheelhouse,” said Kurkjian, a junior broadcast and digital

Curious, he picks it up and is suddenly whisked away by the Cat in the Hat into the storybook pages of the world of Dr. Seuss.

The Syracuse University Department of Drama kicked off its 2013 season with the zany production of “Seussical The Musical,” a mix of Dr. Seuss’ most famous books, co-written by Lynn Ahrens, an SU

alumna, and Stephen Flaherty. The musical opened Oct. 10 and runs through Oct. 20. It is directed by David Lowenstein, an original cast member of the Broadway production that ran for six months. The show has since toured nationally on two separate occasions.

On opening night, the jokes resonated with the audience, who really seemed to enjoy the production from start to finish. There were many moments where they were thrown into fits of laughter

and at the end of the show they rose to their feet to give the cast a standing ovation.

The Cat in the Hat is the narrator of the show and leads the curious boy to the Jungle of Nool, where Horton the Elephant resides. Horton discovers a speck of dust f loating in the air that carries the Whos. But no one else believes anyone is there.

Columnist argues against tanning as fashion accessory, supports tan ban

T

hose in favor of tanning maintain that it makes you appear younger and healthier, and can even make you look better in your clothes. But I consider myself an anti-tanner and wholeheartedly disagree with such claims.

And the coordinators of England’s Liverpool Fashion Week — which begins Monday — can also be labeled as anti-tanners. They have instated a ban on tanning beds, forbidding the show’s models from using them.

This further shows that fashion is not just about clothes: It is about achieving a certain “look.” Looks are about styling and accessorizing and are more about the way you carry yourself in your chosen ensemble than the individual articles of clothing.

For example, consider the myriad of looks you can achieve with a little black dress. You can step into a pair of nude heels, throw on some silver bangles and create a very subdued, elegant look. Or you can slap on a pair of cowboy boots, add a jean jacket and create a country look. The choice is yours and the

eat toast with the buttered-side down. This includes Whoville’s mayor’s son Jojo, who is sent to boot camp to be “straightened up.”

Jojo, according to the law, thinks too many “thinks” for his own good.

The entire cast does a wonderful job of portraying their characters. It almost rivals

A more insidious component of any given look, though, is whether or not you decide to tan. For decades, men and women of all ages have flocked to beaches and tanning beds, all in search of that sun-kissed glow, eschewing caveats of skin cancer and premature aging by refusing to slather on any sunscreen.

Liverpool Fashion Week is the first of any of the fashion weeks to implement a ban on models using tanning beds. They did so not only to protect the skin health of the models, but also to send the message to show-goers and women everywhere that they do not have to cook themselves in a tanning bed to

an off-Broadway production. During the musical numbers, the cast’s voices blend well together — key for the success of a musical production.

Robert Axelrod, a senior acting major, embodies his character of the Cat in the Hat. His physical antics — being able to bend his body in a creepy way, but in an instant, able to stand tall again — paired with the honest delivery of his lines give him a personality that makes you want to hug him at times and

look beautiful and fashionable.

I applaud Liverpool Fashion Week’s actions. I think it is high time the rest of the fashion world got on the anti-sun — and simulated sun — bandwagon.

I am not advocating that people lock themselves indoors and adapt a vampiric lifestyle in an effort to avoid every ray of sunshine.

But it is time for tanning beds to be a relic of the past. And if you don’t believe that tanning is positively awful for your skin, I have just two words for you: Tan Mom. Leather boots and handbags — or their animal-friendly substitutes — are a fashion do, but having skin that resembles leather is definitely a fashion don’t. The fashion industry often receives its fair share of negative attention for entrenching the notion that looking thin to the point of emaciation is attractive and the “look” for which women should strive.

While this aesthetic is both physically and mentally detrimental and should be rigorously discouraged, the issue of skin health is equally

important. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and abusing it by tanning can result in health issues that are just as grave as the ones that result from food deprivation.

A safer tanning alternative is sunless tanning. The models at Liverpool Fashion Week will be permitted to spray tan or apply buildable self-tanner to achieve a dewy glow.

This is a much safer alternative, but I am disappointed that all forms of tanning have not been banned from the show.

The ingredients in many sunless tanners, like parabens and phthalates, may also prove to be toxic. Some experts believe they can increase the risk of not only skin cancer, but also other forms of cancer; they argue that with extended use, sunless tanners can work their way into your bloodstream and reach other organs.

Your safest bet is to learn to accept the skin you are in, no matter what shade it may be.

Opposite Axelrod, Ben Odom, a junior musical theater major, is a great Horton, wearing a long grey shirt, a tie to represent his trunk and a gray winter hunting hat, with the side f laps acting as his ears. His performance makes the audience believe he can actually see the Whos on the speck of dust. He is also able to convey real emotion when the other characters call him a fool for thinking there are people living on the speck. It isn’t easy playing a character that is larger than life, such as an elephant.

But the female lead of Gertrude, played

by Sydney Patrick, a senior musical theater major, is amazing. She’s quirky and fun as she f laps her arms in the air as if they were wings. Her character is a little dimwitted, but Patrick pulls it off.

Although Jojo is a young boy in the storybook, junior musical theater major Raven Gabrielle Perez is perfectly charming in her portrayal of Jojo. She has the ideal rebellious demeanor for the role.

The cast was dressed in neon and bright pastel tops accompanied by just-as-brightlycolored bottoms, thanks to costume designer Meggan Camp. The costumes made the audience use its imagination, such as when birds wore feathered hats and skirts to represent tails. For fish, ensemble members wore bellbottom pants and swim caps on their heads.

“Seussical” is a show for all-ages. The language is simple enough for the little ones to understand, with some room for things to be left up to the imagination.

Otto Tunes began the concert with a lively rendition of Fountains of Wayne’s “Stacy’s Mom.” During the line, “Her mom came out with just a towel on,” one member appeared from the group simply clad in a pink towel.

During intermission, the crowd bid on two members of each group in a date auction. Otto Tunes president Kurkjian acted as the auctioneer, and started the intermission entertainment by talking up the member previously wearing the pink towel: Otto Tunes member Michael Downes.

Downes, a senior information management and technology major, has been with Otto Tunes since its inception. He said he found out about the date auction last minute and was volunteered by his group members. He laughed when he found out he was the cheapest to be auctioned off at $5, but said he is excited to go on the blind date for charity.

Besides the event raising a sizeable sum to donate to the Testicular Cancer Foundation, Kurkjian said he was also proud of the amount of awareness the event raised.

Said Kurkjian: “We now have a real passion for something like this that is so overlooked and so ignored by so many men in the world. We are just trying to spread the word on campus, and if that’s all we can reach right now, then that’s good enough for us.”

ith gumbo all over my hands as I tried to crack open a fresh crab leg, I thought of a photograph of me as a child with food smeared all over my face. My mom says I must have enjoyed the food, given the mess. So if messiness has anything to do with tastiness, I am sure she would have said the same about my experience this weekend at Papa Joe’s Cajun & Soul Cuisine.

“You got to get down and dirty,” said my waiter as I wondered how I should attempt to consume the heaping bowl of gumbo with shelled crawfish and crab legs. “Snap the heads off and then suck the meat out them.”

So that is what I did, and man, it was delicious.

The recently opened Papa Joe’s, located at 305 Burnet Ave., is one of the only Cajun food restaurants in the Syracuse area.

Owner Crystal Lucas’ family comes from Baton Rouge, La., and she grew up eating traditional New Orleans food. When she decided to open a restaurant, Lucas thought she would try something different and honor her family — the restaurant is named after her deceased father.

At Papa Joe’s, she shaped the menu around Cajun classics, like gumbo and jambalaya, and included soul food, like fried chicken, pork chops and hearty sides of mashed pota-

toes and collard greens. The menu requires that diners enter the restaurant with an empty stomach.

The restaurant itself has a homey feel.

With brick walls, beautiful wooden floors, large green tiles on the ceiling and ambient lighting combined with natural light from the window, it felt like entering a home rather than a restaurant. The best part though, was that the food tasted fresh.

Before eating, I was nervous that seafood in a Syracuse restaurant would not taste the same as it might in New Orleans. I was wrong. The gumbo I ordered came with an assortment of shellfish and did not have an overpowering fishy taste.

The thick broth seeped into the rice beneath it and made a great dish for a chilly fall day. The Cajun holy trinity of ingredients — celery, bell peppers and onions — added a fresh element to the dish.

After cracking open the crab leg shells and continuing to use my hands as I ate, I also ordered catfish nuggets with a side of seasoned fries. The nuggets were tiny but there were plenty on the plate to complete a full dish. The meat was fresh, flaky and full of flavor. The fries were also tasty and seasoned well.

To finish off my lunch, I tasted the shrimp etouffee served over white rice. With a creamy, flavorful tomato-based sauce, the dish was a little too spicy. Instead of letting other flavors

shine, much of the dish was overpowered by its heat. That being said, there was not much left of it when I finished.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the prices on the lunch menu. Available in half portions, the seafood delights ranged from $9.50 to $13. Though it might be a little more than the average person is willing to spend for lunch, the portion you receive — including a buttery cornbread muffin on the side

— along with the ingredients used, make this price very reasonable.

The least favorable thing about the restaurant is its location. Close to campus but not accessible by bus, it would be hard to get there without a car.

But if you’re willing to get a little messy and are looking for some home cooked food, Papa Joe’s might just be the place for you. nlfisher@syr.edu

“We were together. We were cohesive. We played quick,” said midfielder Nick Perea, who logged four shot attempts. “And when we move the ball quickly, we do great things.”

By halftime, Syracuse held a 7-0 shot advantage. The beginning of the second half was “dead,” as McIntyre described it, as the Orange mustered just one shot in the frame’s first 20 minutes.

But during the back end of the second half, the intensity picked up. The fans became excited, and the quality of the Orange attack improved with it.

With less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, Stamoulacatos ripped a shot from the top of the box. Pittsburgh goalkeeper Dan Lynd elevated, stuck out one hand and deflected the ball over the net for one of his 11 crucial saves of the night.

“Their keeper came up huge,” Perea said.

“He was saving left and right. Up. Down. It was amazing.”

The match’s first 90 minutes concluded with the scoreboard displaying a fruitless ‘15’

in Syracuse’s shot column.

And more shots were on the way. With the Pittsburgh attack incapable of producing any semblance of opportunity, it became a battle of SU’s attack against the Panthers’ defense.

Two and a half minutes into overtime, Stamoulacatos corralled a pass, made a defender miss and fired SU’s only shot in the first 10 minutes of the extra period. But Lynd was there.

In the second 10 minutes of overtime, Syracuse threw more pressure at the Panthers and Pittsburgh handled it. The Orange drew its seventh corner of the match and couldn’t capitalize. Lynd dove to his left to save a Perea shot from within the box.

Stamoulacatos again found himself a chance to salvage Syracuse’s attack from leaving empty-handed.

Two minutes remained before the Orange and Panthers would have to call it even. Stamoulacatos sprinted ahead to collect a slow pass, then dodged two Pitt defenders around the top of the box and lined up his seventh shot of the game.

“You don’t want to go 2-4,” Gulley said.

“People look at the record and just judge, like if we’re 2-4, we’re not that good, but if we go 3-3 we actually can do this.

“That’s how we’re looking at it, and that sure is how our team is going about it.”

The Orange is controlling the ground game on both sides of the football. With 362 rushing yards against the Wolfpack, which entered the game as the 17th best run-stopping team in the country, SU has out rushed opponents 1,324 to 722 this season — 5.3 yards per carry to 3.1.

On Saturday, Syracuse’s front seven held N.C. State to just 2.9 yards per carry and logged 13 tackles for loss.

“If there’s one thing that we’ll do well, we’ll stop the run,” linebacker Marquis Spruill said.

Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The wide receivers who went catchless against Clemson caught only four balls against the Wolfpack.

The improved secondary still dodged a couple of bullets, like when Pete Thomas overthrew a wide-

open Jumichael Ramos down the seam in the third quarter. And N.C. State made even more selfinflicted wounds, like passing on a chip-shot field goal to turn the ball over on downs in the second.

So which side will go on to define the 2013 Syracuse football team? The old-timey, groundand-pound, beat-you-with-defense team or the hard-to-watch pass-heavy team?

Let’s take a look at SU’s remaining schedule to find out:

The Orange opens as 9.5-point underdogs, but after handling the Wolfpack, it’s possible SU hangs around with another run-reliant opponent.

Still, it’s more than likely the Orange’s bowl hopes come down to this throwback Big East reunion.

Nov. 2 vs. Wake Forest (3-3, 1-2): The Demon Deacons have allowed more points than they’ve scored. Tanner Price and Michael Campanaro could challenge the SU defensive backs, but this should be the Orange’s first home conference win.

Nov. 23 vs. Pittsburgh (3-2, 2-2): The Panthers may be playing for a bowl selection with No. 10 Miami (Fla.) waiting for them in their finale. They’re coming off a 23-yard rushing performance in a loss to then-No. 24 Virginia Tech.

One week ago, Syracuse was coming off its worst loss since 2008. It was winless in three conference games it wasn’t heavily favored to win.

Now it’s in line for the postseason. All it needs to do is take care of business at home.

backs — “horses,” head coach Scott Shafer called them — 28 times and tucked the ball to run 11 more for 362 total yards. As Hunt floundered with his arm, SU turned to the staple of the offense, the running game, to carry Syracuse (3-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) to a 24-10 win against N.C. State (3-3, 0-3) in front of 56,639 on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium.

As afternoon turned to evening, the Orange’s running game seemed to be drawing closer to exploding. In a wet, turnover-filled game, the times that momentum actually surfaced were rare. Each boneheaded mistake by one team was met with an equally head-scratching gaffe by the other.

Through it all, though, SU had a recipe that was working. Syracuse rushed for more than 200 yards in the first three quarters against a top-20 rush defense, but had just 10 points to show for it.

“I think any recipe we can think of in our game plan will be the best recipe,” Shafer said, “but I like those two horses.”

Nearly every time the Orange picked up a chunk of yardage on the ground — including a 30-yard run by Smith in the first quarter and a 55-yard run by Gulley in the third — SU failed to punch it into the end zone. Syracuse went threeand-out after Smith’s big gain and settled for a field goal after Gulley’s.

The plays were happening — just not in succession.

“We thought we could rush the ball on a good rush defense,” Shafer said.

In the first half, though, the Orange let Hunt try to make plays. He threw the ball 13 times in the first half, culminating with his two interceptions. So SU turned back to what it does best — running the ball. And in the fourth quarter, the big ones finally strung together.

With the game tied at 10 and the CarterFinley crowd almost entirely devoid of energy, Smith cracked a 57-yard run up the middle.

On the next play, Gulley scampered in from 18 yards out to give Syracuse a 16-10 lead.

On the next possession, the ground game iced it. This time, Gulley broke off the long run, a 48-yarder to the North Carolina State 5. Two plays later, Hunt took his 11th carry in from 8 yards out to move past 90 rushing yards on the day.

“They have two really good backs,” N.C. State head coach Dave Doeren said. “They did well, but mostly it was those two (long) runs.

Those runs they cracked up the middle.”

Gulley compared Saturday to last year’s Pinstripe Bowl — a snowy December afternoon when the Orange’s running game turned in a historic performance. On that day, even Ryan Nassib was felled by the conditions — unable to carry the offense as he did through much of the season — and the burden fell on the running backs.

Making just his third start, Hunt was far from his best. His 39-yard hook up with H-back Ashton Broyld was one of the best throws he’s made for SU, but otherwise, he was inept through the air. Even after that play, Syracuse went right to the ground and ran the ball seven straight times before Smith opened the game’s scoring with a touchdown.

But this was SU’s identity. With two talented

And with an athletic quarterback who’s getting better at deciding when to run in the fold, too, it’s an identity that SU can lean on and let its backs run wild.

ALEIGH, N.C. — It’s crazy how two drives can change the entire perception of a team.

Syracuse won ugly on Saturday, mostly thanks to a pair of gashing, fourth-quarter runs from Jerome Smith and Prince-Tyson Gulley.

Terrel Hunt struggled to connect with his receivers while the defense warmly accepted an even sloppier North Carolina State offense in a game filled with sideways rain and early timeouts.

If SU had lost and dropped to 2-4, it would have needed to upset Georgia Tech or Maryland to reach six wins and I probably would have booked my vacation to Orlando for winter break.

But at 3-3, the Orange should be favored against Wake Forest, Boston College and Pittsburgh. Suddenly, this team is in position to make a bowl. Suddenly, its glaring deficiencies — a mediocre-at-best wide receiving corps and a plagued secondary

ALEIGH, N.C. — As the final moments of the first half ticked away, an already ugly battle between Syracuse and North Carolina State threatened to devolve into something even more unwatchable.

Terrel Hunt heaved two interceptions in the final minutes of the second quarter. Pete Thomas tossed one, too. On a rainy Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C., neither team proved capable of doing damage through the air.

Prince-Tyson Gulley’s coaches weren’t shy about telling him that. As the first 30 minutes came to a close, the call came down from his coaches in the booth. This one was on the running backs.

“We went into halftime and they just told us straight up that this game was going to come out of the backfield,” Gulley said.

Both the Orange and Wolfpack offenses were sloppy and disjointed for most of the day. Hunt struggled to throw the ball. Thomas struggled to do much of anything. But the Orange had a trump card — the three-headed, ground-based monster of Hunt, Gulley and Jerome Smith.

“It could be better, certainly,” SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. “We were close tonight, a few times…We showed some character to at least get a point out of it. But I think, through the run of play, we created enough chances to win this one tonight.”
