ordan Lally joined Juanita Perez Williams’ mayoral campaign the day after hearing her speak to Syracuse University’s College Democrats.

She was looking for an internship and, after hearing from the other mayoral candidates, decided Perez Williams fit the bill.

During the summer, she spent her days making phone calls, typing emails and canvassing in Syracuse neighborhoods.

Day after day, Lally said, she and Perez Williams would sit in an office at her campaign headquarters, making fundraising phone calls. Once, while alone with Perez Williams, the pair dis-

covered a typo in an email blast they had just sent.

“Juanita got very, very upset about it,” Lally recalled. “Not at anybody, like it was anybody’s fault, but she was very upset.”

For Perez Williams, the frontrunner in the race for Syracuse’s next mayor, the typo was more than a simple mistake.

Lally remembered Perez Williams, who is Latina, tell her that people assume she has having trouble speaking English. As a white woman, Lally said she wouldn’t understand what it feels like to be Latina and have a typo in an email that’s supposed to be coming directly from Perez Williams.

ayoral candidate Ben Walsh, in the yellow glow of a few stage lights, spun a pen in his hand, looking out at a crowd of familiar faces.

There, sitting in the third row of CNY Jazz Central, was Stephanie Crockett.

She’s a senior vice president at Eric Mower & Associates, an advertising agency. Crockett has known Walsh for years. She’s donated to his campaign.

And there was Rick Destito, owner of The Gear Factory, a studio space for local artists. Walsh, working at City Hall, helped Destito address property code violations. Destito will vote for Walsh.

This moment, and others like it, have defined Walsh’s candidacy.

Walsh, 38, would be the first mayor of Syracuse ever to be unaffiliated with any political party.

But he’s formed close friendships with influential Democrats, GOP members, business owners and executives. He’s amassed just over $440,000 in campaign contributions — more than any other candidate, state records show. Major real estate developers and construction companies back him, a frequent point of contention as ethics reform becomes a central issue at mayoral debates.

He’s branded himself as the candidate of change, running on the Reform and Independence Party lines, while also utilizing his family’s deep Republican roots.

“I’ve done everything I can do,” Walsh said in an interview. “I’m in a position to win. And, I’ve done it my way. I haven’t see walsh page 6

EDUCATION HOWIE HAWKINS DESEGREGATION AND CONSOLIDATION Hawkins said he wants city schools and neighboring suburban schools to desegregate across racial and socioeconomic lines through consolidating the city school district with surrounding suburban ones. New York state public schools are the most segregated in the country, and the Syracuse City School District’s border with the Westhill Central School District is the 15th-most segregated in the United States.

LAURA LAVINE MAYORAL CONTROL Lavine called for mayoral control of the school district, which allows the mayor to appoint the Syracuse City School District Board members rather than having them elected. She has a background in education as former superintendent of LaFayette Central School District. Lavine has cited the district’s 60.9 percent high school graduation rate — a new high for the district — compared to New York state’s 79.4 percent average.

SU staffer wins international competition

A Syracuse University staff member recently won a $15,000 prize at an international entrepreneurial competition for his design of a portable charging station for electric vehicles.

Josh Aviv, co-founder and CEO of SparkCharge, won first place at the Blackstone/Techstars venture pitch competition in New York City on Oct. 18.

Aviv competed in a “pitchfest,”

winning a $15,000 prize and a trip to Techstars Foundercon in Oakland, California, for his new product called SparkCharge.

“Essentially, an electric vehicle owner can be sitting in the middle of a corn field and take the charger from out the trunk of his car, plug it in and begin charging his vehicle right there on the spot,” Aviv said.

The pitch competition started at the end of a two-day Blackstone/ Techstars boot camp that involved training, mentorship and net-

working sessions. Forty collegiate ventures, selected from the 20 Blackstone LaunchPads across the United States and Ireland, participated in the camp.

Among the ventures, seven finalists were chosen to participate in the final pitchfest.

SparkCharge’s team consisted of five people, including engineers, scientists and marketers.

In assembling his team, Aviv made use of the Syracuse Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering, or CASE.

Angelo “AJ” Damiano, a junior studying marketing management at SU, also attended the training camp. Damiano is the founder of PowerSpike, a marketing and analytics platform for the video game live-streaming platform Twitch.tv.

“We take the top content creators on Twitch.tv, and we help connect them with brands and advertisers for paid promotions and sponsored content,” Damiano said. see competition page 7

Professors weigh in on Wi-Fi security breach

A flaw in the WPA2 protocol — a protocol that secures wireless networks — was recently discovered by a researcher at the University of Leuven in Belgium, CNN reported.

This flaw, called Key Reinstallation Attack, or KRACK, gives a hacker access to a range of devices to break encryption and steal or manipulate data.

The Daily Orange spoke with Radhika Garg and David Molta, professors at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, about the security flaw and why it will, most likely, not affect SU’s wireless infrastructure.

The Daily Orange: How does the KRACK flaw make it easier for hackers to infiltrate secure devices?

Radhika Garg: There is a flaw

in WPA2 protocols, where a hacker could read or steal the data that was supposed to be protected. Recently, a research paper was presented by Mathy Vanhoef.

What he showed in his paper was that usually there is a four-way handshake by which you share an encrypted key to secure the data that you are sending on the internet … if somebody with malicious temptations tries to hack or tamper, he can replay the third handshake. This enables the hacker to decrypt the data.

David Molta: It basically breaks the encryption on Wi-Fi. It is what we call a “man in the middle attack,” where an intruder would sit between you and the connection to the access point.

By leveraging some obscure implementation errors in the WPA2 standard, the experts have figured out a way to crack the encryption.

The D.O.: What can hackers do with this stolen information?

R.G.: They can reuse the data or see wi-fi page 4

Experts discuss convention State prepares for possible constitutional amendments

While New York state voters have traditionally voted to not hold state constitutional conventions, one expert said she thinks this year could be different.

Kristi Andersen, a professor emerita of political science at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, said President Donald Trump’s administration has helped spur a growing desire among people to protect the environment and women’s reproductive choices.

New York residents, on Nov. 7, will vote on whether they want officials to hold a constitutional convention. Residents vote on constitutional convention proposals every 20 years. The last convention requested by voters was held in 1938.

During a constitutional convention, delegates — elected representatives of Senate districts throughout New York — vote to amend the state constitution.

“They could simply add amendments or they could scrap the whole thing and start over,” Andersen said.

They have to always be on top of their game, she said. They always have to be articulate or they’ll be questioned. Or stereotyped.

Perez Williams, who comes from a family of Mexican immigrants, is one of the four remaining candidates in a race for mayor that, for most of the year, was primarily dominated by white men.

She’s never run for office — her background is in law — but in September she defeated Democratic designee Joe Nicoletti in the party’s primary, claiming the only spot on the Democratic ballot in November’s general election.

If she wins next week, Perez Williams will be the first woman of color to lead a city with the most concentrated black and Hispanic poverty in the country.

Perez Williams and her supporters attribute her successful primary bid to her life’s story, which they say resonates with Syracuse residents — a childhood in poverty, an immigrant heritage and a history of bucking racial discrimination.

She was born in Chula Vista, California, a poor city wedged between San Diego and the Mexican border. Her parents, Ralph and Lydia, were poor, but they got by on welfare while raising Perez Williams and her three brothers. Her grandparents came to the United States from Mexico.

Her parents tried hard to keep Perez Williams and her siblings out of trouble, she said.

But it wasn’t easy.

“The drug scene was horrible,” Lydia recalled.

She said her oldest son told her Perez Williams would be “eaten up” unless she got out of the city. Around the time Perez Williams entered junior high school, her parents decided they needed to leave. Only about 25 percent of students at the high school she would have attended in Chula Vista graduated.

The family moved about 20 minutes west, to a rural town called Jamul. Perez Williams and her siblings were some of the first Mexican-Americans to attend the nearby Valhalla High School, Lydia said. There were some white people who helped her children, but she remembered them coming home from school describing how they’d been teased by other students because of their race.

“They would call them ‘dirty Mexicans,’ or say, ‘go back where you came from,’” Lydia said.

But Perez Williams’ brother was valedictorian. Perez Williams herself graduated a cheerleader and a top student, her mother said. All four children attended college.

On the campaign trail, Perez Williams is quick to connect her childhood and status as a woman of color to the primarily black and Latino Syracuse communities — some of the most impoverished in the country.

“Naturally I am more comfortable in the communities where people are struggling and have challenges that have not been heard,” from page 3

pretend to be you. Imagine if you are doing online banking. You send your password to your banking system, then a hacker can replay and decrypt the data and they now have your password and can do anything with your bank account.

D.M.: I think the biggest concern is that hackers could intercept login credentials.

Once they are able to compromise your login information, they would then use that information to attack your resources on other sites … once one of your accounts get compromised, all of your accounts can get compromised. You wouldn’t even know that it’s happened. It’s a silent attack.

The D.O.: Why are hackers targeting Wi-Fi systems, instead of directly targeting personal devices?

R.G.: It’s not something that the hackers are intending to do, but rather the flaw in the protocol itself. It is the flaw which creates a vulnerability that hackers can exploit.

The D.O.: How can the KRACK flaw be fixed?

R.G.: It can be fixed by software patches. The good news is, it was an implementation bug rather than a fundamental design bug in the standard itself.

D.M.: There are a lot of patches. As of nine or 10 days ago, Apple (said) they had already

Her campaign, she said, has been trying to go into communities where people traditionally do not vote. Campaign volunteers shared stories about driving through neighborhoods with a megaphone, rallying for Perez Williams in Spanish.

At an event in Syracuse’s North Side — where refugees in Syracuse typically settle — Perez Williams told attendees that people needed to take care of one another.

“She was the only person that’s reached out to the Liberian community,” said Thomas Nimineh, a community leader.

Perez Williams’ grandmother ingrained in her the duty to serve the community, she said.

She knew as a child that service would be a part of her future.

Perez Williams joined the U.S. Navy, where she worked as an attorney, shortly after graduating college. She’s held the titles of regional director of the New York State Education Department, New York state assistant attorney general and corporation counsel in Syracuse City Hall, where she helped manage the city’s legal affairs.

Between 2001 and 2008, though, Perez Williams worked outside the public sector, at Syracuse University. During her time at SU, she spent much of her time in the Student Affairs office, where she managed the university’s judicial organization.

Perez Williams said she enjoyed working with young people, despite her role as the university’s disciplinarian. Her daughter, Jackie, said she often took her to campus as a child.

But Perez Williams’ abrupt departure from the university in August 2008, following a judicial proceeding involving three Syracuse men’s basketball players accused of sexual assault, has never been detailed.

In fall 2007, a female student filed a complaint with the Department of Public Safety alleging she had been sexually assaulted by the three student-athletes. Though she didn’t press criminal charges against them, she tried to resolve the incident through the Office of Judicial Affairs.

The student never got a hearing until David Potter, then the associate dean of student services in the College of Arts and Sciences, helped push the proceeding forward in the judicial affairs office. Anastasia Urtz, then the associate vice president and dean of students, said the trial could begin if Potter or the student could provide additional information.

Though the female student transferred to another school, Potter filed new information on behalf of Arts and Sciences. The hearing panel did not find the players guilty of sexual assault, but they were found guilty of causing the student mental anguish. All three players were put on probation.

By the next summer, Urtz, Potter, Perez Williams and another administrator were out of their jobs. The Daily Orange confirmed in 2008 they were involved in the judicial hearing, but then-Chancellor Nancy Cantor denied in 2012 that the firings were related patched the vulnerabilities. However, these patches are still largely only available to developers. They are saying that they should be able to roll it out to consumers sometime soon, like early November.

The D.O.: Are SU students at risk? If so, how can they protect themselves?

R.G.: According to the university’s wireless engineer, the protocol that enables this vulnerability is not used on the Syracuse campus.

So the AirOrangeX network provides a level of safety, but as soon as the student walks off campus, it’s a different story.

Students should research their particular wireless device to learn about the status of patching. As soon as the patches are available, the students should install them on their devices.

D.M.: For the most part, they are not at risk.

There are no known exploits that have been developed yet.

In fact ... the infrastructure vulnerability is irrelevant to the university. The feature that KRACK exploits is not a feature that we implement here at Syracuse University.

Unlike a lot of hacking — where you’re vulnerable to anyone on the internet — for this particular problem, the person needs to be in your wireless cell … like a few rooms over. If you’re a hacker, that’s risky. I don’t want to underemphasize the severity. This is a significant, nasty attack. But, I don’t think from an individual user standpoint, it would result in significant loss. olcole@syr.edu

Perez Williams declined to comment on whether her removal was related to the judicial hearing. But the candidate said she believed she served honorably at SU. “Until my final day there, I stood up for students. I stood up for respect of women on campus and left knowing that I did the right thing,” she said.

Cantor, through a spokesman, declined to comment further on her 2012 statement.

Perez Williams thanked Urtz during her victory speech after the September primary.

She said during the speech that Urtz was a member of the campaign team. Urtz has also donated more than $2,000 to Perez Williams’ mayoral bid.

Urtz, now vice president of administration and compliance at Onondaga Community College, could not be reached for comment.

Those close to Perez Williams have said she’s always been motivated to do the right thing, a product of her time working in the justice system.

Perez Williams said she believes it’s difficult for people who want to run for mayor to do it the “right way.” She has repeatedly attacked Ben Walsh, the independent candidate who narrowly trails her in the race, for the money he’s from page 3

convention Legislature multiple times before they can be ratified, Andersen added.

Some state residents feel that changes are not happening fast enough in the Legislature, Andersen said.

Those in favor of and those against hosting the convention are not divided along party lines, and two of the main issues influencing whether a convention is held are reproductive rights and labor unions, Andersen said.

“It depends on your personality. If you’re generally fearful, you could think that things you like will be taken away,” Andersen said.

Carl Heastie, the Democratic Speaker of the New York State Assembly, has said he opposes the constitutional convention.

“A Constitutional Convention could undoubtedly do irreparable damage to many of the hard-fought gains that New Yorkers have championed for generations, including labor protections, women’s rights, environmental protections and even education funding,” Heastie said in an email.

The state’s Senate majority leader, Republican John Flanagan, has also said he is against the convention, according to The New York Times. Flanagan could not be reached for comment on this article.

If the electorate votes “yes” in November, delegates would be elected next year, during

Matt Johnson, who was canvassing for Perez Williams’ campaign earlier this month, lit up when he heard Spanish music blasting from a barbecue on the front lawn of a house in East Syracuse.

“Hi,” he said in Spanish, walking up the driveway. “I’m from the campaign of Juanita Perez Williams. I wasn’t sure if you had questions about the campaign.”

Some of the people gave him a confused look.

“Juanita Perez Williams? She could be the first Latina mayor of Syracuse,” Johnson told them.

Suddenly, a woman burst from out from the garage, smiling.

“Juanita! No te preocupes, no te preocupes,” she said. “Don’t worry. Don’t worry.”

District gerrymandering has emerged as a hot-button issue as politicians deliberate the benefits and negatives of holding a constitutional convention.

Stephen Gottlieb, a professor emeritus at Albany Law School, said Gill v. Whitford — a case under consideration by the United States Supreme Court — could set a national precedent for gerrymandering. That case’s outcome won’t be made public until the end of the judicial term in June, though.

Malapportionment, or the misappropriation of representative seats according to population of a given district, is another issue that could affect the convention, Gottlieb said.

Partisan gerrymandering and malapportionment are both issues that could be addressed at the convention, also, but only after another year-long campaign in which anyone can run through a major party, Gottlieb said.

“They make their own rules,” Gottlieb said. “They basically decide how they want to organize themselves and what they want to produce.”

The D.O. joins Documenting Hate project Incidents of hate and bias on the Syracuse University campus aren’t tracked as well as they should be.

That’s why The Daily Orange is joining ProPublica’s Documenting Hate project to track down these untold stories, and we need your help to tell them.

In recent years, SU has seen a white cultural club pursuing university recognition, a soccer player shouting racial slurs on camera and 20 percent of respondents to a 2016 campus climate survey report experiencing discrimination. In its annual security report released in October, SU’s Division of Campus Safety and Emergency Services reported the second-highest number of hate or bias crimes in 2016 among peer institutions. SU’s five on-campus cases included incidents motivated by race, sexual orientation and religion.

Still, many hate crimes go unrecognized and unreported.

While FBI data reveals between 5,000-10,000 hate crimes occur in the United States each year, an annual survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates there could be as many as 250,000.

The FBI defines hate crimes as “criminal offenses motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.” New York has its own hate crime law, and SU offers students a place to report bias-related incidents.

University community members can report an instance of bias or hate directly through SU’s Department of Public Safety or STOP Bias reporting system. But with Documenting Hate, The D.O. hopes to record the personal

accounts of students, staff and faculty who have witnessed or been affected by these incidents at SU or the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

If you’ve experienced or witnessed an incident of hate or bias, please share your story with The D.O. on our website. A D.O. reporter may then follow up with you for more details to the extent you are comfortable sharing them. Your response won’t be shared with the university.

News organizations and civil rights groups nationwide have already joined ProPublica on this project. As hate crimes continue to surge across the U.S., we’re ready to tell SU community members’ stories, too.

Why Syracuse is the perfect home for Amazon’s 2nd headquarters

T

he rust belt city of Syracuse may seem like an unlikely home for tech giant Amazon’s next headquarters. But if Amazon wants to showcase its philanthropic mission, it shouldn’t count out the region just yet.

North American cities had their last chance on Thursday to submit proposals to become the home of Amazon’s new headquarters, or HQ2. Central New York and three other New York metropolitan areas are just four of the 238 regions that applied. That number includes upand-coming cities that leave the rust belt looking even more tarnished.

Amazon’s HQ2 could completely revitalize the winning city. The company expects to make a $5 billion investment into its second campus, creating 50,000 jobs with an average pay of $100,000, according to the list of requirements for regions applying for the bid.

That’s an investment Syracuse desperately needs — and a perfect way for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to live up to his philanthropic goals of helping people “right now.” If Amazon builds HQ2 in Syracuse, it would show how one company can change the economic fortunes of an entire city.

Amazon has requirements for what it wants in a new home. The applying city must have a population center of at least 1 million people within a 30-mile radius, an international airport within 45 minutes and access to mass transit.

The city can’t be more than 1 to 2

miles from the nearest highway and needs enough land for Amazon to build an up-to-8 million square foot campus by 2027.

Sadly, the Syracuse-Mohawk Valley bid is not considered a top contender to win the competition since its airport size, mass transit system and population size fell short of Amazon’s requirements. Leading companies like Amazon lean toward bigger cities on the rise, which is why Boston, Pittsburgh and Denver are strong contenders.

Syracuse used to be home to large manufacturers like Carrier and General Electric. But now, three of the five largest employers in Onondaga County are hospitals. The other two are Wegmans and Syracuse University, and all five combined employ only about half the workers Amazon would bring in, according to the Onondaga County website.

But Syracuse may still have an advantage over these up-andcoming cities, said Eugene Liu, an economics professor at SU. “In Syracuse, we have good higher education, medical infrastructure and defense technology with drones,” he said.

Building HQ2 in Syracuse could have worthwhile benefits for Amazon as well. The headquarters could transform Syracuse’s long-term outlook and the company itself.

CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity has stressed the $23 billion Amazon could save with Syracuse’s cheap labor market, cost of living and real estate.

This argument can be flipped to frame Syracuse as small and insignificant. But Syracuse should sell

Amazon on the philanthropic benefits of providing jobs to one of the most impoverished cities in the U.S. and boosting its economic recovery.

CenterState’s report mentions the high concentration of poverty in Syracuse, a problem Amazon could help alleviate. Unemployment in the United States is so low that companies with warehouses in the U.S., like Amazon, can’t find enough people to work their low-skill jobs.

Amazon would have few issues hiring warehouse workers with Syracuse 15-percent unemployment rate.

But it could do wonders for public relations and social capital surrounding Amazon and other massive corporations.

With one risky move, Amazon could become the company that saved a failing city.

Across the city, Walsh campaign signs were propped up at street corners. Across the city, this man, accustomed to board meetings and backroom negotiations, had become recognizable.

••• Jennifer Owens knew she had to resign once she saw the note, stuck to a manila envelope, from the county’s Democratic committee chairman, Mark English: “Committee members are prohibited from ever circulating petitions for any candidates for other parties who oppose our Democratic candidates in November.”

Early on a muggy Saturday in mid-May, local Democrats endorsed Common Councilor Joe Nicoletti for mayor, a move that disenfranchised Owens, a Walsh supporter, and Tim Carroll, a former top official in Mayor Stephanie Miner’s administration.

The election was 178 days away.

Owens, a lifelong Democrat, was Walsh’s friend. She circulated his campaign petitions.

After reading the note, taped to a packet of Nicoletti canvassing documents, Owens emailed English. She stepped down.

“The line was drawn in the sand. They said, ‘If you do this, you’re basically not a part of us.’ So in some ways, I feel more like I was kicked out,” Owens said, referring to her support of Walsh.

because many Republicans, against their better judgment, Owens said, voted in the name of party loyalty. Owens watched Democrats make the same mistake in Syracuse, she said.

Walsh would unite the city, Owens said, unlike other candidates, including Perez Williams, who upset Nicoletti in September’s primary.

••• Bob Andrews met Laura Lavine, the sole Republican mayoral candidate, at his favorite coffee shop. It was March, two weeks after the county’s GOP committee voted to endorse Lavine, a former superintendent of LaFayette schools.

The election was 223 days away.

Andrews, a big man who sports a pair of full rim eyeglasses like Roger Sterling or Lane Pryce of “Mad Men,” spoke with the party designate at a Cafe Kubal in Syracuse’s Eastwood neighborhood. Breaking party ranks, Andrews told Lavine he would support Walsh, his friend.

“I don’t think Ben was given much of a chance,” said Andrews, a former GOP committee chair, in an interview.

Walsh, at the beginning of the year, without a path to the ballot, was initially interested in the GOP’s endorsement. Some committee members, though, refused to consider the former city official as a potential candidate.

Andrews thought Walsh, who previously worked beside Democratic leaders and played a major role in the redevelopment of Hotel Syracuse, could be a strong candidate for the GOP. Others saw it differently. Walsh wasn’t a

“I know he was also talking to the Democratic Party at the same time,” Andrews said.

“But, you know, I looked at it as his family history … I knew his family history was there.”

Ed Riley stepped forward, grabbing a small podium in front of his new property: 413,000 square feet of ornate furnishings, gaudy chandeliers and ballroom space.

••• Walsh walked into the stone building once controlled by his grandfather.

Near the start of her second term, Miner asked Walsh to join City Hall, overseeing SIDA as its executive director.

For Tim Carroll, former director of mayoral initiatives, Walsh immediately fit in. Walsh had coordinated urban revitalization efforts for the local Metropolitan Development Association, a precursor to CenterState CEO. He knew the ropes.

Carroll, growing to like the new hire, asked Walsh if he had any political aspirations. After all, his father, James Walsh, served as the area’s Republican congressman for decades. His grandfather, a Republican, was elected mayor in the 1960s.

Walsh said yes, Carroll recalled in an interview.

Riley had fully reclaimed Hotel Syracuse, renovating an iconic city landmark left vacant after years of bankruptcy court proceedings and sales. It was the building’s official reopening.

“He was key to getting this done,” Riley said of Walsh.

Hotel Syracuse has been touted as a symbol of downtown revitalization. Riley said the project, which could cost more than $80 million in total, if including a second phase of construction, would have gone nowhere if Walsh wasn’t Syracuse’s deputy commissioner of neighborhood and business development at the time.

Under Walsh’s leadership, the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency granted Riley’s limited liability company, Syracuse Community Hotel Restoration Company 1, millions of dollars in property tax breaks to redevelop the 93-year-old building, which contained pipes and wiring installed during the 1920s.

Walsh, on the city’s behalf, helped negotiate a 14-year payment-in-lieu-of-tax agreement, also called a PILOT, with Riley’s team,

But, at the age of 18, Walsh had registered as an independent. Partly because of “youthful rebellion,” he said, and partly because, growing up, he saw the personal attacks sometimes part of “party politics.”

“I think a lot of people in politics see politics as the end. It’s all about winning and losing, and being loyal to your party,” Walsh said.

“And that always turned me off.”

Walsh, down a hallway near the mayor’s office, on the first floor of City Hall, started his new job. A few days later, he watched a SIDA meeting for the first time as a staff member.

Researchers: Mice are primary cause of Lyme disease

Tick and Lyme disease experts pointed to mice, not deer, for the rising number of tickborne illnesses in New York this year.

In 2016, the mild winter and growing mice populations could have caused an increase in tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease, New York Upstate reported.

Phillip Baker, executive director at the American Lyme Disease Foundation, said there is a misconception of deer being the main transmitters of tick-borne illnesses.

Baker said mice and other small rodents are the main organisms that keep the diseases percolating in the area where they are introduced.

Mice act as a reservoir for Lyme disease bacteria, said Brian Leydet, assistant professor of epidemiology and disease ecology and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in an email.

Leydet noted ticks are not born infected.

They pick up the bacteria from a host in their

environment — most often mice.

A lot of tick activity is influenced by the amount of food animals have to feed on, Baker said. Increasing amounts of acorns in the fall translates to more mice, more ticks and therefore more Lyme disease.

Mature female ticks attach to deer that can travel miles. The ticks drop off the deer and then feed off field mice in that particular area, Baker said.

Joseph Domachowske, professor of pediatrics at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, said in an email Lyme disease was not common in central New York 15 years ago. The number of cases began to increase as Lymeinfected ticks became more widespread.

Felicia Keesing, an ecologist and educator at Bard College in Annandale, New York, has spent the past 20 years studying ticks and risk variations for people contracting tick-borne diseases.

Keesing said rodents are most efficient in passing the bacteria for Lyme disease.

“If a tick feeds on a mouse, it will almost certainly pick up the pathogen that causes Lyme disease,” Keesing said.

However, Keesing said if a tick feeds on something other than a mouse, such as a fox or a squirrel, the tick is much less likely to pick up the bacteria that causes the disease.

Most cases of Lyme are contracted in the spring and summer, Keesing said. When it comes to temperature, she said there are beginnings of some evidence that hot and very dry temperatures can be bad for tick survival in newly-hatched and teenage ticks.

“Ticks are actually remarkably resistant to temperature changes,” she said.

“They are very good at finding places in the forest or wherever they are living that are within their temperature range, their preferred temperature range, which is already quite broad.”

Leydet said areas that couldn’t sustain tick growth in the past are now beginning to see tick populations increase.

It is difficult to predict tick populations on a year-to-year basis.

“Every year is a ‘bad’ tick year, and the public should always remain vigilant with personal protective practices, such as wearing Acaricides and doing tick checks,” Leydet said. phbrenne@syr.edu

“Anonymous” showcases two series of Edmonds’ work. The first set of portraits consist of men wearing hoodies and the second consists of men wearing do-rags. Both bodies of work provoke conversation about visibility in society by concealing their subjects’ identities. Each image shows the back of a man’s head, detailing their headwear through color and texture.

To Edmonds, the simplicity and anonymity that these portraits convey allow the audience “to see themselves as part of the equation of the subject and the photograph.”

Edmonds emphasizes the viewer as an integral part of his work.

“I began doing the hoods pictures while I was at Yale, and I was really interested in public perception,” Edmonds said. “That

work became a way for me to think about why you are understood in a certain way if you’re coated in certain types of dress.”

Edmonds views the do-rag as “an American symbol.” Through this portrait series, he aims to reflect modern issues of racism and systemic injustice. Cjala Surratt, promotions coordinator at Light Work, said she believes Edmonds’s work is extremely relevant to the Syracuse community.

“We have cases here pending in Syracuse that have to do with injustices that people see in regards to marginalized communities and how they are represented,” Surratt said. “His work is very relevant because I think not seeing people’s faces is a huge part of the problem.”

Everyone Orchestra will perform Thursday without having rehearsed once.

Since its start in 2001, the band has welcomed numerous local artists into its lineup. The Orchestra will come to The Westcott Theater on Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets are available on the band’s website. Everyone Orchestra, directed by Matt Butler, has frequented The Westcott.

Al Schnier, lead guitarist and manager of the band moe., participated in the shows for more than a decade, usually without his band.

Thursday’s show will feature other moe. band members, Vinnie Amico

and Jim Loughlin, and it will be the first time all three have a chance to play together in this setting.

“Matt has created something really special because we go out there without any music, without a script, without any rehearsals, and rely on energy and talent on the stage to come together,” Schnier said. “It’s his job as instructor to elicit the performance from us.”

Alongside the three members of moe., the show will feature Ryan Montbleau, Mike Maher from the band Snarky Puppy, Eric Gould from Pink Talking Fish and Hayley Jane from Hayley Jane and the Primates. The musicians have bonded over the years as the Everyone

komonibo had the opportunity to speak alongside leaders, including Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner and empowerment speaker Arel Moodie.

Komonibo said her TEDx talk made her realize fashion philanthropy is not something people talk about often.

Alongside her role as the founder of Style Lottery, Komonibo also works as the director of recruitment and diversity at Newhouse.

“By day I am an admissions officer, and I’m recruiting, and by night, I’m doing more philanthropy and sustainability kind of work,” she said. “It kind of draws me (in) two different directions, but it keeps me on my toes.”

Though she was a middle school teacher in her hometown before coming to SU, the philanthropist became involved with recruitment because of her passion for helping students get into college.

Komonibo works with both prospective students as well as enrolled students. SU junior Annaya English works with Komonibo through the TNH Agency, a student-run advertising agency.

English decided to get involved with account management and client relationships and was assigned the Style Lottery account without knowing much about the social enterprise beforehand.

“She will probably be the easiest client I will ever work with in my entire life,” English said.

English said she admires Komonibo for her work ethic and poise as a woman of color. With hopes to be an entrepreneur herself, English is inspired by Komonibo’s ability to balance the Style Lottery and her role as a Newhouse director.

Both English and Komonibo have experience with the Newhouse Ambassador program — English as an advertising ambassador and Komonibo as the director. Aside from working with Style Lottery, English said she appreciates Komonibo’s willingness to help students like herself further their careers.

“We can talk about the (advertising industry) and have a long, drawn-out debate about that,” English said. “When I hear

her perspective, it’s just that she is so wellinformed in so many different things that it’s super interesting to talk to her, not about Style Lottery but about issues in the world.”

Melissa Cadwell, a Students with Sustainability adviser, connects students from the sustainability organization with Komonibo for clothing swaps she’s coordinated on campus.

Caldwell said coordinating students with Style Lottery is as simple as an introduction with the founder, who welcomes the help and organizes the clothing swaps.

“It’s a positive vibe,” she said. “I’ve been to two Style swaps, and at both of them, the kids were having so much fun. They dropped their articles of clothing off, and they would go through the racks.

There was just this really fun, happy vibe going on, and they seemed to really enjoy it.”

Komonibo said she likes that students, in many ways, provide the power and brains that go into running Style Lottery, such as coordinating and managing the event and setting up closets and racks.

Cadwell remembered seeing people wear the clothes they got from one of the clothing swaps at an event and thinking how great it was to see that people were taking advantage of sustainable clothing.

With fashion styles shifting often, Cadwell said swapping clothes offers a sustainable way for people to change their look.

“Every year it’s a new trend, so being able to update your wardrobe and being able to change it without having to spend a lot of money, especially for college-aged students and for lowincome students, it’s important to be able to do that,” she said.

Komonibo said that at some point in college she realized fashion makes a statement about who someone is and how they represent themselves. The things she has to do on a certain day often determines how Komonibo dresses, she said.

Whether it be bold lipstick, or a quirky look to lighten the mood on a certain day, Komonibo said she is, “very aware of the messaging that clothes give.” cbfogel@syr.edu

“Sometimes I go into it, and there are musicians I don’t know, but in this case, I’ve played with everyone before,” Schnier said. “In some cases, I meet them for the first time at the show, and then by the end of the show we’ve become best friends.”

Butler turns chaos into music. Schnier said Butler has a board for writing instructions, choosing a musician to start the music and pointing out certain sounds in the composition that work for the piece. From this work on the board, to the shock of the audience, a great song emerges.

Gould, the bassist and manager of Pink Talking Fish, a tribute band, is a newcomer to Everyone Orchestra and awaits his first performance at the upcoming show. Many of his friends have played in the orchestra for years, and he will finally join them, ready to “go along for the ride.”

exhibit he completed during his time. The program facilitates emerging artists working on projects of their personal interest.

Light Work receives more than 900 applications each year internationally for 12-15 positions. The goal of the program is to “help the artists” and immerse the Syracuse University campus with their work, said Mary Lee Hodgens, associate director at Light Work.

Artists in residence at Light Work receive a $5,000 stipend, a furnished apartment and complete access to Light Work’s photo production facilities. The ultimate goal is to provide artists the platform and space to “go onto the next level,” Surratt said.

The artists work on a range of projects including large-scale printing, book creation and video editing. While in residence,

things come out of players than they do in their normal band. I plan to open my heart and soul to the music and see what happens,” Gould said.

“If it’s in my schedule then I’m in. It’s a chance to create something pretty special, and we make people in the audience happy with the music.”

The constantly rotating group of musicians has formed a close bond throughout their years of participation.

“It’s like everyone is camping or hiking or sailing together,” Schnier said. “We all work together to achieve the same goal and one way or another you become fast friends. After playing with them multiple times, now I look forward to seeing them because they’re old friends.”

After so many shows the theater welcomes the orchestra as it comes to town now. Wes Johnson, director of marketing and the box office, said this show is one the theater has worked with a lot.

“Some people are in bands that don’t come to The Westcott, so it’s an opportunity for people to see those people in the smaller intimate theater setting,” Johnson said. ssallam@syr.edu

Edmonds worked on printing his do-rag portrait series on silk.

“I printed them on silk because I wanted to give that same sense of materiality that the do-rags have when you actually see someone wearing one,” Edmonds said. “When you walk through the gallery, the do-rag pieces move and flutter in the air as if the actual material was the do-rag itself.”

Through exhibitions, publications and residency programs, Light Work has been supporting artists since 1973. The nonprofit organization offers workshops, classes and community access to its state-of-the-art facilities to make multimedia art more accessible to the Syracuse community.

“It’s imperative for people to understand that art is not a ‘supplement to,’” Surratt said. “Art is important, and it is often one of the few vehicles to get people of different backgrounds together.” hrober03@syr.edu

D

riftwood, a folk rock band based out of Binghamton, is set to perform at The Westcott Theater on Friday at 9 p.m., and doors open at 8 p.m.

Driftwood’s current members have been together since 2011. The group released its latest album in October 2016. The band started off with rock n’ roll vibes but has evolved into a feel-good, folk rock sound with four members on guitar, vocals, banjo, bass and fiddle. As they gear up for studio time for the next album, the band hopes to hone in on its sound and expand to a national platform.

The Daily Orange spoke with Michael Morrison, Driftwood’s manager, and Claire Byrne, the band’s fiddler and vocalist.

The Daily Orange: How long have you been managing Driftwood?

Michael Morrison: This year.

Claire Byrne: We have been with Groundwork (Artist Management) since March.

The D.O.: How has that been?

M.M.: It’s been an absolute pleasure. They are great people.

Wonderful musicians, talented, good songwriters. It also happens to be the style of music that I enjoy the most. They happen to be great people with a great thirst for life.

C.B.: It’s amazing when you find management that really works for you. And you can be the artist without having to be the businessperson.

The D.O.: What was the band looking for in their/your transition to Groundwork Artist Management?

M.M.: They were looking to get to the next level. They do well in your area, Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton and Pennsylvania, but they wanted to become more of a national act. They needed some help as far as branding or marketing was concerned. They needed to have a consistent and easy to understand brand across all of their social media platforms.

We did a pretty deep dive to understand who they are, who they want to be and what kind of message they want to present. We’ve managed to push them quite a bit more nationally.

C.B.: It’s been quite subtle, so it’s not like we haven’t experienced some major success. The changes that we have seen have been a lot of weight off our shoulders, and a lot of new markets have been opened up to us. The biggest adjustment has been letting someone else do it for us when we have been used to doing it ourselves.

The D.O.: What’s next for the band?

M.M.: In a week they go back to the studio with Simone Felice.

He produced the last Lumineers record. The plan is to produce an entire album. In this day and age, you don’t necessarily need an album.

C.B.: We released our last album a year ago from last week.

I am hoping that (our upcoming collaboration with Simone Felice) ties our sound together. I feel like, as a group, we’ve been working toward a certain sound. And I’m hoping with his skills as a producer and vibes that he has, it will sort of tie the whole thing together.

The D.O.: Can we expect major changes for the upcoming collaboration?

M.M.: Probably not. One of my fundamental edicts as a manager is I’m not going to find an artist and mold them into something. Their sound is going to be similar, the energy is going to be similar, you’re going to hear vocals from all of them and you’re going to get the banjo, acoustic guitar and upright bass. The goal is to take exactly who they are and focus it a little bit more.

C.B.: I think for fans that know us well, there will be some changes. But those changes have slowly been in the works anyway, like adding more drums or having a more produced sound. Like our last album, there were some changes on there more so than there will be with this album. I think the thing that people will see this time, it’s going to be more ethereal. lnilesst@syr.edu

Just nine players on the team’s roster hail from either D.C., Maryland or Virginia — the DMV — so C. Butler didn’t have a lot of teammates to relate to his freshman year. At times, he felt “kind of alone.” When M. Butler arrived, they hit it off upon introduction thanks to the proximity of their hometowns. M. Butler hails from D.C. and C. Butler is from District Heights, Maryland, an eastern suburb of the nation’s capital.

I was always a fan of him. I had no choice but to keep up with him because whenever I looked up myself, I saw his news too.

“You go through the same types of hurdles that not everybody else has to go through in life to get to where we’re at,” M. Butler said. “It’s something that, as a shared experience, helps us to grow and to know that when I look at him, I see somebody who’s been down some of the roads I’ve been down.”

As someone almost three years his senior, M. Butler has become an “older brother” to C. Butler, the sophomore said.

C. Butler has gone to M. Butler seeking advice for matters both personal and football related.

“He understands me,” C. Butler said. “I could talk to him about anything.”

Those conversations don’t have to be serious, though. The two discuss what they miss most while away from the DMV, like mumbo sauce, a must-have takeout condiment. M. Butler called it a combination of sweet and sour sauce, barbecue sauce and hot sauce. The concoction, C. Butler said, will put a smile on the face of anyone from the DMV. Then there’s go-go music, a funk subgenre born in ‘70s-D.C. that thrived during the Butlers’ high school years. It was on the warm-up CD for M. Butler’s team at Gonzaga High. It blared through the basement of the Boy and Girls Club, his first exposure to the sound of go-go in a live setting, where the band shouted him out for a touchdown he scored earlier in the night.

“It’s not your ordinary boy band or rock band,” C. Butler said. “It’s just having fun.

It’s a vibe.”

The two don’t spend as much time together now that Syracuse is the thick of its season.

But on a mid-October Tuesday evening in the team’s facility, when C. Butler finished an interview with the media and M. Butler entered the room to begin another, they exchanged pleasantries.

“Sup, Lil Dev,” C. Butler jeered, referring to the title of “Big Dev” the two both claim.

M. Butler says it should be his because of seniority, while C. Butler takes ownership because he is a physically bigger person.

The jab made the new friends laugh and smile, as if they had known each other forever.

Because they had, kind of.

Syracuse needs to deliver offensively to win an ACC game

In its first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the year, Syracuse led No. 11 Virginia on the road for nearly a third of the game before conceding the lead in an eventual tie. In its next conference game, Syracuse struck first again, this time holding a lead over then-No. 17 Louisville for nearly 20 minutes before sinking into an escapable deficit. Then, Syracuse was the seventh ranked the team in the country, just needing “that final quality cross and touch to be able to put it away,” as Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said following the game on Sept. 9.

It wasn’t just that night his team lacked the final touch.

Since tying Virginia, Syracuse (6-8-3, 0-6-2 ACC) has won three games, none of which have been in conference play. For the first time in its four-year history in conference play, Syracuse enters the ACC Tournament without a conference win. The Orange has been outscored 14-8 in conference play, with each loss coming by one goal. In three of its eight conference games, SU led in shots but never goals. Now, the former Top 10 team is the last seed and will travel to fifth-seeded Clemson on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

“We realize there’s no safety net, certainly with playoffs,” McIntyre said. “That’s why it will be electric, that’s why it’s fun. And that’s why we do this.” from page 16

griffin transferred to Seton Hall. Griffin had looked forward to working with Thompson, because he had watched nearly all of Syracuse’s games from the season before and had seen the offensive potential. Now, Syracuse’s big men are the most unproven part of its roster, and the Orange will rely on Griffin to bring the unit along.

One of the first things Griffin did after he got the job was take his two remaining players — redshirt junior Paschal Chukwu and freshman Bourama Sidibe — out for pizza so they got to know each other. At first, they were both quiet, but as Griffin watched Sidibe and Chukwu in the gym they were “better than expected,” he said. In his fourth season, Chukwu seemed naturally more at ease in the college game than first-year Sidibe, who was more “wide-eyed.” Yet Sidibe’s athleticism and dunking ability has impressed Griffin and bolstered optimism in Boeheim’s plan to use each 20 minutes per game.

Going out for pizza, to Griffin, symbolized the way he’d always done things. The ability to cajole teammates and players stuck out to Griffin’s former teammates, and it doesn’t from page 16

masalin has yielded results in the form of a 62-3011 record after winning five games in their first two years at Syracuse. Many current and former players credit Masalin and his “behind-the-scenes” work with a large part of the team’s success.

Ten seasons later, their eighth at SU, McIntyre and Masalin have turned Syracuse into a nationally recognized program, though this season may not reflect it with the Orange (6-8-3, 0-6-2 Atlantic Coast) entering the ACC tournament Wednesday as the lowest seed.

With a litany of underclassmen in starting roles, McIntyre and Masalin aren’t done fostering the environment they spoke of in that hotel restaurant. Because to close this season strong and engineer a resurgence for the program next year, McIntyre and Masalin will face their toughest task yet.

“We thought we could build something here,” Masalin said.

On Oct. 3, an hour before SU played Akron, Masalin stood inside a circle of players as he led them in core and leg stretches. Masalin, 44, wore a gray Nike shirt with an SU patch on the chest and blue shorts. He has stretched with every team he’s coached, and if not for Masalin’s thinning blond hair, he could be mistaken for one of the players.

In the final regular season game of the season, Syracuse tied No. 1 Wake Forest, which entered the matchup unbeaten in conference play. Hendrik Hilpert tallied a career high nine saves en route to ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors. But Syracuse didn’t register a shot on goal in that match.

Even when the Orange shot on goal, its inability to connect has plagued SU all season.

On Oct. 7, against North Carolina State, no defender stood in front of Hugo Delhommelle.

The junior midfielder rocketed a shot toward N.C. State’s goalkeeper, who deflected the shot and sprawled on the ground, stopping the ball from crossing the goal line. Two minutes later, N.C. State did what Syracuse couldn’t and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Against Duke on Sept. 22, Tajon Buchanan broke free from the Blue Devil defense. The freshman forward sprung into the air and knocked the ball hard at the Duke goal. It bounced off goalkeeper Will Pulisic’s face and Syracuse remained scoreless just under 20 minutes into the game. Eighteen minutes later, Duke provided the goal Syracuse had failed to en route to a 2-1 victory.

“I think if we avoid those mistakes, especially like we did against Wake Forest we are one of the strongest teams in the nation,” Delhommelle said. “That’s what we are looking for, just don’t make any mistakes.”

The tie against Wake Forest marked just the second time SU has blanked its opponent this season, nine less than last year’s 11 shutouts. The

Orange held opposing ACC teams scoreless for at least a third of the game in six of its eight conference matches. Only one ended in a shutout.

The other conference opponent Syracuse came closest to shutting out will host the Orange Wednesday. Clemson ended Syracuse’s season in 2015 and its conference tournament run in 2016. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Syracuse held Clemson

scoreless for more than 70 minutes, before falling 2-1 following two goals for the Tigers in a five-minute span.

In what McIntyre and his team are calling “Clemson Part Seven,” Syracuse seeks a result it hasn’t been granted all season. For it to finally happen, Syracuse will need to do something it hasn’t done this season: finish.

Recently, as the brothers ate together at one Griffin’s favorite spots in Syracuse, Attilio’s Restaurant, a fan mistook Anthony for his brother and gushed about how great it was having him back as a coach. The brothers played along for a few minutes before Allen, laughing, explained the mix-up.

When Griffin was a point guard, he sensed the differing needs of his big men Billy Celuck and Jeremy McNeill, so he tailored his approach to each player. Sometimes he went out and drank a beer or two with Celuck, because he knew that’s what Celuck liked to do. He gave mostly encouragement to McNeill, whom Griffin sensed was hesitant to trust.

“C’mon big Perm,” Griffin said quietly to McNeill when the team needed him.

“Me being a point guard,” Griffin said, “I had to learn how to deal with different personalities at one time (with Celuck and McNeill).

I use that now to this day, especially with (Chukwu and Sidibe). … I’ve had a lot of handson training with centers, and the one thing I learned is this: They’re big gentle giants and

you got to show them love, but you also got to put your foot up their butt if you need to.”

When Griffin criticizes Chukwu or Sidibe, he always tries to do so in a quieter voice, so they understand he wants them to get better and he’s not just yelling out of anger. He takes the same approach with his two sons, 18-year-old A.J. and 7-year-old Trey. And now, Griffin wants to be there for his players like those who were there for him when he was a student.

When he came to Syracuse, it was the first extended time away from his grandmother, who raised him because he hadn’t known his father and his mother died when he was about 7 years old. Griffin often went to Blumin’s office to talk throughout college. When his role on the team grew as a sophomore. When he was benched as a junior. When he started every game as a senior.

One day during that time, Griffin walked into Blumin’s office and sat on a chair that was next to a sofa. He picked up the Wheelo, his favorite toy of the collection Blumin kept to help calm those who came to see her, the one where magnets inside a red plastic wheel propel it along two sides of a U-shaped metal track in a way that sort of

looks like gravity.

As Griffin spun the wheel back and forth, Blumin continued typing on her computer.

Students often streamed in and out, so a few minutes passed before she looked up at Griffin.

Then, she saw tears streaming down his face.

She walked over, sat on the sofa and asked what was wrong. He couldn’t remember his mother’s voice. They sat together for a while in silence until Blumin suggested Griffin call his grandmother.

Last year, Blumin retired. While cleaning out her office, she called several former students to see if they wanted anything. When she reached Griffin, he knew immediately.

Blumin boxed up the Whee-lo and addressed the package to Dayton, Ohio.

A few days later, Griffin ripped open the package, sat down and spun the toy, he said, for the better part of two to three days. Then he put it on his desk and, as players visited his office throughout the season, some picked it up as they talked.

Griffin hasn’t yet brought the Whee-lo to his new office, with its high glass windows overlooking the Melo Center. For now, he keeps it at his apartment, but it’ll be ready for anyone who might be in need.

“I enjoy getting guys ready for something,” Masalin said. “I prepare them mentally. It’s almost like me being a part of it still.”

At one point, he was employed as an assistant coach with three different Finnish youth teams. Masalin knew he would never be able to sit behind a desk, so he searched for a full-time coaching job. During what would be the final year of his career in 2003, Masalin received a job offer from a former teammate who was then the general manager of the Atlanta Silverbacks of the United Soccer League. Masalin obtained his green card and moved to the United States.

“The whole game itself,” Masalin said, “you feel like you owe something to it…

You just want to be part of it, you want to give back.”

Masalin has built up SU’s program by giving chances to players that remind him of himself. Sometimes he has personal friends scout European players. Most of the time he relies on organizations such as College Scholarship USA, a company that connects potential student-athletes with schools in the U.S. Former forward Emil Ekblom, who scored 18 goals over two seasons, came from CSUSA. The bedrock of SU’s program — Julian Buscher, Juuso Pasanen and Oyvind Alseth — were all recruited by Masalin.

The core pieces of the 2017 team were also brought in due to Masalin’s recruiting.

Mo Adams, a sophomore captain, received a phone call from him days after SU’s 2015 season ended in the program’s first College Cup appearance. Goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert met Masalin in Germany and was persuaded to join the Orange. Sondre Norheim, a freshman defender, Skyped with Masalin after connecting through CSUSA. “There’s a lot of players that get chopped off at the age of 17 or 18,” Masalin said. “They start thinking, ‘What am I doing next?’ Up until then, it’s all soccer. They think they’re going to be a pro player.”

About three weeks after the Akron matchup on Oct. 21, Masalin prepped his team for a clash against then-No. 7 Clemson. After hugging each of the players, Masalin returned to his usual seat on Syracuse’s bench, the one closest to McIntyre. During the game, the Orange head coach stalked the sidelines, and shouted directions at players while Masalin remained silent.

“In coaching,” Masalin said, “everything comes first and you come last. I don’t have to perform on the sidelines. Our job is done before the whistle blows. I was fiery and feisty as a player, but I still got a little of fire in my belly while I’m on the sidelines.”

When Masalin stopped playing and moved to the USL in 2003, he struggled to

adjust. He had won two league championships in Finland and viewed the transition as a “step-down.” He doubted he would stay in the states and thought about getting a Finnish coaching license and moving back home.

Part of his doubts stemmed from the fact that the USL was a struggling league.

Masalin joined the Rochester Rhinos and coached in New York for two years after his previous team folded. Prior to the 2008 season, the Rhinos went bankrupt. His last duty as an assistant was to call thenHartwick head coach, McIntyre, and cancel a preseason game.

“I’m calling you up first of all to say we’re not playing a game anymore,” Masalin remembered saying. “And, do you need an assistant?”

With “nothing to lose,” Masalin drove to McIntyre’s office for an interview. In a four-hour long meeting, the two discussed their playing careers and spoke about an ideal culture for a successful collegiate program. At the end, McIntyre offered Masalin a job.

“I wanted something fresh and Jukka represented that,” McIntyre said. “You surround yourself with players and coaches you want to go to battle with each and every night. … I’m delighted to have Jukka right by my side.”

16 years ago, Allen Griffin graduated from Syracuse. Now he’s back — this time as a coach.

he professor strode into Syracuse’s practice unannounced, and Allen Griffin knew he was in trouble.

It was fall 1997 and Griffin, a freshman from Brownsville, Brooklyn, watched Marlene Blumin approach Bernie Fine, whom she knew as a former classmate and Griffin knew as his head coach’s lieutenant. Griffin remembered Fine looking around until he saw Griffin looking back at him. Fine extended a pointer finger and beckoned.

Come here now.

Griffin trudged over, and, once he was within reach, Fine put his hand on the back of Griffin’s head. In that moment, Griffin regretted not paying the proper respect to Blumin’s warning: Turn in your homework or I’ll come get it. Fine glared at Griffin as the point guard stammered through an explanation. The next College Learning Strategies class, Griffin handed in his assignment.

“That established that I cared about him,” Blumin said recently. “After that, back then, he would come (into my office) if he felt lonesome.”

This spring, two unrelated things happened to make Griffin’s return to Syracuse as an assistant coach possible.

Within a week in late March, longtime SU assistant Mike Hopkins departed to become the head coach at Washington and then Griffin’s boss at Dayton, Archie Miller, left for Indiana.

This left Griffin in limbo, until Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim called. Griffin had tried to become a Syracuse assistant before, serving as the team’s administrative assistant from 2003 to 2005, but Boeheim had recommended gaining assistant coaching experience elsewhere first.

In early April, Griffin replaced Hopkins as the big-man coach and understood the significance of joining a staff of alumni helmed by a 42-year head coach that had been a core for six straight seasons.

Those relationships, like with Boeheim; fellow assistants Adrian Autry and Gerry McNamara; and Blumin, drew Griffin back to Syracuse. Coming into the fold, Griffin said, gives him “the opportunity to walk around with a little swag.” Taking this job, said his brother, Anthony Griffin, allowed him to share as a coach the lessons he learned as a player.

“I grew into a man here,” Griffin said. “(Syracuse) put a lot of things into perspective in terms of life for me. The relationships I built here…” He trailed off.

“I’ll be honest, I thank God every day that I’m back, and I’m not a Christian.”

Coaching big men hasn’t bothered Griffin though he never was one himself. He felt like a coach on the floor in college and then, at Dayton, coaches worked with every position.

“Everybody makes a big deal about working with big guys,” Boeheim said. “The best guy I ever worked with at big guys was Pete Newell, he was a guard.

He was the best big-guy coach that I’ve ever seen. Mike Hopkins was a guard, he was a great big-guy coach. Bernie Fine was a great big-guy coach. He didn’t play basketball. It’s kind of a myth to think, ‘Well you have to be big to coach big guys.’ I did it when I was here.

“It’s like you’ve got to be a bird to jump out of a plane.”

Butlers bond over shared name Masalin helps launch Orange into spotlight

Devin C. Butler had never met Devin M. Butler, the graduate transfer from Notre Dame, before the latter arrived in Syracuse this past January. But C. Butler knew M. Butler’s face, because Google had familiarized him with it.

“Every time I looked me up,” C. Butler, a sophomore wide receiver, said, “I see him.”

M. Butler, a cornerback, shared the struggle. During his senior year at Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) High School, whenever M. Butler went to check his status on local recruiting websites, a Frederick Douglass (Maryland) High School fresh-

man quarterback who won 12 games and threw for 1,100 yards appeared. It was C. Butler. But, at that time, there was no need for the middle initial. They were just two kids on opposite ends of successful high school careers.

“I’d be like, ‘Alright, Lil’ Devin out there doing his thing, man,’” M. Butler said. “I was always a fan of him. I had no choice but to keep up with him because whenever I looked up myself, I saw his news too.”

Last season, C. Butler’s only two catches of his freshman year came against Notre Dame. M. Butler’s then-Irish teammates teased him as if he was the one causing problems for their defense. Even now, a Google search of “Devin Butler”

provides each player’s SU roster profile as the first two results, but only photos of M. Butler appear.

Now the Butlers are teammates, and Syracuse (4-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast) is tasked with handling two players with the same name.

Head coach Dino Babers, when asked how he differentiates addressing the two, cackled and admitted his method is a little embarrassing. One is “Devin Butler offense,” the other is “Devin Butler defense.” Other players shout “Devin!” to get both to instinctively respond.

The situation has caused the Butlers to form a bond based in their name but it’s bolstered by their

Eight years ago, Ian McIntyre and Jukka Masalin lounged at a hotel restaurant in Orlando, Florida, in the middle of another weeklong recruiting trip. The pair had spent 12 hours watching high schoolers and were poring over notes when McIntyre’s phone rang. The voice on the other end of the line gave McIntyre a glimpse of his future as Syracuse’s head coach.

The then-head coach at Hartwick College in Oneonta returned to the table and asked if Masalin, who had

spent two years with McIntyre at Hartwick, would to join him at SU. They wanted to build a premier program upon a culture they felt reflected both of their aggressive, hard-working personalities.

“I didn’t really have to think about it,” Masalin said. “I moved around more in my life than he has. I thought it was a clear step for us to move forward … I said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

When McIntyre hired an assistant, he didn’t want someone who he coached or played against. Masalin fit the description. Overall, the culture the pair wanted to implement see masalin page 14
